Hi guys! This weekend my wife took our 3 months old son to visit her mom on the other side of the country, and since it turned out at last minute that I didn't have to work thi weekend, I decided to work on my orks.
Teaser pics of my version of barely tabletop ready. Throughout this thread I hope to up the ante a bit:

It kinda snowballed. My original plan was to write this post this morning ( I got friday-monday off), but I slept for too long, and decided to get started on the modeling.
What I hope to get done by monday:
Greystuff sleeves(2 stage process), model hats (2 stage process) and trim down helmets on 24ish shootaboys, and 39 kommando boys.
Greystuff sandbags for my lobba emplacements with lefteover scraps of gs.
Mould the last batch of unit insignias and apply them.
Glue on what backpacks I have (secret war large backpacks) on a number of kommandos.
Glue on a bunch of IG gubbinz on the boys (water cannisters and bayonets from the cadian box)
Glue stikbombs on my kommandos.
All models are mainly made from the ork boy box and have been assembled over the last couple of months.
The kommandos are from three different groups. One will have berets, one bonie hats, and the third is undecided so far.
Todays progress:
Done stage one of the sleeves on all models, this took longer than expected, as I found that I hadn't attached arms on 12 shootaboys, nor removed their mould lines.
Finished 12 out of 33 sandbags needed.
Moulded the last 21 unit insignias needed.
Finished 4 beers, a bottle of sheridan's and 1.5 litre of coca cola during the process.
Eaten a pizza.
Not too bad for the first 12 hours. I've aldo been on the phone with the mrs, and been informed that my son is starting to grow teeth, which apparently makes him cranky as 'ell.
Now I'm off to bed, I'll amend this post in the morning with a pic of the horde, and a pic of how another of my completed but unpainted models look, so you'll know what I'm aiming for.
Wish me luck! Tomorrow I hope to finish another 12 sandbags, and stage two off all the sleeves. If I find time for it, I'll clean up the unit insignias aswell.

Cut out indeed. I'm having trouble going too sleep, as my necks gotten quite stiff. I'm going to heat up one of those bean bags my wife used on her lower back when she was pregnant, hope that sorts it.
Gotta remember to take more, but shorter breaks tomorrow, getting up and walking about a bit...
//Calle Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, after a rough start of the day, I'm about to start the work once I'm done with this post.
Sorry about the HUGE pics, the rough start of the day was me truing to put in the charger for my wifes computer, resulting in a bang, a flash, me slamming into the opposite wall and a blown safety, when I was to re-size the images. Now I'm going to have to get it repaired on monday.
First up, the horde, with step one on the sleeves done:
Next, my box of unit insignias, with a barry thrown in for scale:
My lobbas and the humble beginnings of their sandbag emplacements:
And finally, a shot of my "kommand group" for the shootaboys, I made the work on them with greenstuff, so it's easier to see the modifications:
And on that note, I relly need to start working if I'm to have any hope of finishing step two on the sleeves today..
Laters!

I love the way that that hats come out in the last pic, they just blend with the orks in a natural way ( however natural orks with booniehats and barrets may be?)
As for the sandbags, you'd might wanna add a trim to them.
If you look at the dark grey bags at the top right of the bottom left base, they feel more sandbag-ish.. At least that's what I feel, and I know that you can do it
But otherwise they're starting to get somewhere!
The insignias, I think, are gonna be awesome and make it really easy to avoid confusion of which boys that belong to which troop when it gets crowded. Plus for the crisp details on them!
Kinda hard to see the end result on the sleeves so far on the top pic.
On the current stage they feel more like a arm-straps, than a shirtsleeve. But when looking on the last pic again, reminds me of how awesome they will look when done.
Keep up the good job!

Time for dinner break, so I thought I'd post a little update.
Another 2 sanbags made.
Took out the last moulded unit insignias, and cut off the flash.
Finished the sleeves on 16.5 of the models.
Here's a finished sleeve (still missing the insignia).
@alienfood: yeah, I'm adding the seams with a saw once all bags are dried and glued in place.
Whilst I won't be able to make the seam on the inside of the emplacement that way, I'm hoping I can get away with a thin line to give the illusion of one when I paint it.
Thanks btw on the help with the dremmel work on the "lobba barrels" last summer. (or was it spring??). I told you I'd get around to finishing them. Now just don't start nagging on me to finish painting my dread.
You should put up your bloodletters that you e-mailed me, along with the plaguebearers once you finish them...
//Calle, off to dinner break Automatically Appended Next Post: That's it for today. Got the sleeves done for all 58 models.
Tomorrow is the official "hattifying day" so I'll start on em in the morning. I'm HOPING I can drag myself out of bed early enugh to finish stage one on the hats, early enugh for the first batch to be dry enugh for stage two after dinner. That way, I can spend monday applying backpacks, unit insignias and the IG gubbinz I have.

Quick morning start update: felt the GS burnout approaching, so I spent this morning having a long breakfast, watching the telly, and doing a quick weaponswap on the commissar model I intend to use as a "human advisor" aka attacksquig for my warboss.
Here he is surveiling the assembly of the troops:
Feels like I've staved off the worst of the burnout now.
This break from what I'm suppposed to be doing might have delayed me 3.5 hours, which means I might not be able to do the gluework tomorrow, but it's better than burning out this close to the goal.
I'll be content if I manage to complete stage one on all the headgear today, might glue some gubbinz on when I'm done, If the Gs isn't dried enugh for step two after dinner. That is, IF I get done with stage one on all models before then.
I dunno why I keep doing these updates, maybe in the hopes of encouragements atleast.
Ah well, I hope some of the 170+ lurkers that have looked at this thread got something from it.

Thanks brettz123. I' strivinf for the look the Blood Axes had in the artwork back in second edition.
Lovely black and white art of orks wearing forage caps and german ww2 style helmets.
Hence my regular boys get forage caps and german helmets(just trim down the sides of the ork helmets). This also helps to distinguish between squads.
For my kommandos, I wanted to challenge myself a bit, so I decided to go crazy whilst keeping in line with the military feel of the old Blood Axes. Only liked the current commando nob from the box, and he can easily be given a beret. I also love the old wurzag scrap collector from Digganob, and he has kinda a bonie hat, so a squad with that was given aswell. The third is another tribute to the old, let's see if anyone can figure it out with the stage 1 wips
Picture time, as I'm now done with stage one on all hats. From left to right, they are;
Forage cap, bonie hat, "surprise" and the beret.
I'll try to finish the caps and bonie hats before bed, but they'll probably end up in tomorrow mornings update.
Feel free to guess in the meantime.
Cheers

Alrighty then. Four hours 'till I need to meet my wife and son at the train, and ALL 58 models are done. Sleeves and headgear. 2 levels of sandbags done.
Here's a pic of all five kinds of headgear. Left to right: forage cap, bonie hat, old 2nd edition style commando headgear, beret and finally german ww2 style helmet.
Still have alot of IG gubbinz, beret marks, backpacks and unit insignias to glue on. Those I can do a few at a time, even with wife, and/or my son home. So no panic there, over all, I'm happy with what I've churned out this weekend, these 3.5 days. As I've gotten the time consuming stuff, I usually can't do, done. A quick count, not counting breaks and drying time, I've spent 35 minutes converting each model.
Time consuming, yes. But from the results, I feel that it's well worth it, to get a relatively unique army.
What do you think?

Ugh, don't remind me. I must be the worlds slowest painter. Hmm, let's see, first 24 blokes took about 6 months to paint...
Hopefully, the airbrush will speed this up ALOT with the basecoat. HopefullyI'll get these 58 done in three months...
Ah well, gotta keep busy when I go for paternity leave for 6ish months starting this summer
I got to say I'm impressed though, 300 views+, and so few replies...

The insignias are to be glued onto each models sleeve/upper arm, but there wasn't time left for me to glue either them, nor the IG bits, onto the models. They'll be glued on later this week hopefully.
Each insignia has the orkish glyph for A, B or C on 'em. These represent the three platoons in my army.
Each platoon is comprised of:
12 shootaboys with helmets
12 shootaboys with forage caps
12-15 kommandos (scout element)
3 big gunz (artillery support for A & B)
2 koptas (C platoon has 3 rokkit buggies)
A platoon also has kan support, whilst B platoon have access to two trukks.
A platoons shoota boy squads are usually combined under a bigmekk with kff to make a 25 man squad. ( yes, the boy with a banner on a pic in an earlier post is a spare to replace one of the nobs...

Thanks for the kind words!
I'll post pics of each squad once I've gotten all the extra bits glued on, though some might still be without backpacks, the kommando nob and snikrot, as I haven't been able to afford them yet. (going to buy the kommando kit, loot the nob and all backpacks and toss the rest up on e-bay).
I'm also still one IG heavy weapon team missile launcher short (I use imperial weaponry, heavy bolters with bayonettes for bigshootas, Missile launchers as rokkits, and as seen above the IG mortar stand and foot with a trimmed down kannon barrel as Lobbas).
I got the kromlech kneeling ork legs and ork backpacks from foxbox the other day, and I can't wait to glue thise backpacks on, and use the legs on 2/4 rokkit orks.
I just love the kromlech stuff, unfortunately, one might say, as my wallet cried when I ordered. 70+ £, of bits...
The backpacks are so sweet that I'm considering putting up the large backpacks I got from secret war on e-bay, and ordering another 20 kromlech ones from fox-box... Though, that's almost another 25£ including VAT and P&P...

Not had time to do much work on the lads, but atleast I've had time to toss together 4 rokkit boys for two of the kommando squads, though I'm a bit unsure on how to pose the arms on the two aiming boys?

Thanks Elnibbus, I usually suffer from the same problem. But with little time for modelling(my son), and strapped for cash (bad work situation), has lead me to try to finish what I have for my ork army... Not being able to buy anything tends to keep you motivated...
Today I've cleaned and applied the kromlech backpacks, and an IG radio for one of the kommando groups.

Slowly working on detailing up the models done so far, with insignias, ig-gear and kromlech backpacks.
My order from gw has finally arrived, so I've also started work on a metall kommando nob, and snikrot, alongside the old scrap collector from gorkamorka. (will take wip pics in a moment, but right now my son is asleep in my lap, so I can't get up...)
Edit: wip pics of the three kommando nobs and the "human advisor" (attack squig).
I've also done some more hacking at the commissar (changing his chestplate) and started assembling my kff big mek.
My question right now, is if I should go the "adeptus mechanorkus" route, and give him dark red robes, or if I should go with the same sleeve and camo approach I have on most of my army?
In a way, it'll help him stand out as a hq if I go with the red robes. (my genrul warboss will be wearing a commissar cap and stormcoat to stand out aswell).
Oh, and the wife will be visiting her relatives again the 22nd to 26th this month, so you can expect another burst of feverish "getting stuff done" that weekend. (unless I have to work).
