Hello internets!

Months ago, i stumbled across 3 space crusade chaos dreds. For those who don't know, those were the first 40k dreds ever in production, predating the ever-infamous rouge trader dred. I have two chaos dreds already and am contemplating a contemptor soon but... what should i do with these beauties? I have the shorter variant which is about the same size, maybe slightly taller than you're average dred. Should i extent the legs and count as contemptor it? make other things out of them? IDEAS?!

No, the RT metal dreads predate the SC ones.

RT was 95, space crusade was 1990.

REGARDLESS, us arguing on which is older doesn't fix the topic at hand.

They would be good for a Chaos army (since they have that 'old beyond reckoning' look). I'd say the problem is that they just don't look beefy enough for a modern Marine force, and the FW ones are even beefier so that doesn't help. Paint them as Eldar Warwalkers?

So rogue trader was released after 2nd edition (which was released in '93)?

Rogue Trader was 1987, and the RT dreadnoughts were in the Compendium which was released in 1989

Nooo, I run CSM, and thus need ideas for CSM, possibly necrons, but probably not. Idk i think there's something contemptorish i can do, though a lot of work would be made.

Also, these are in fact, chaos dreds.

I always thought you could Necronise them.
Not sure why but they seem to have an old edition Necron feel to them.

Sorry, the RT dreads are a few years older, as another poster said

That said, what you could use them for? Hell, throw them on normal Dread bases and use them in your marine army

I would use them, but i got two dreds already.

Only as much as the Chaos Androids, the little presence they had hasn't been specifically written out.

I'd sell them, they get decent money on eBay.

Can't offer any suggestions as to what to do with them but I like the feeling of nostalgia this is generating!

As an aside, I have a bunch of the Epic versions of these; happily enough, Epic (2nd Ed anyway) always had rules for Chaos Dreads (and the Chaos Androids that Howard mentions - although they look suspiciously like proto-necrons )

RT was indeed released in 87. There's a Blood Angels dreadnought on the inside cover (of the original hardback), and there are rules for dreadnoughts in there. At that time though, a dreadnought suit was simply like a super-suit of power armour crossed with a vehicle (which all races had access to).

Curiously, the first plastic dreadnoughts were for Space Marine (as it was then) and had a marine one that looked very much like the current FW Contemptor, and a chaos one that was bluntly a standard Space Crusade dreadnought (as opposed to the larger one released with the Mission: Dreadnought. expansion for SC.

Edit: And yeah, the Space Crusade / SpaceMarine 'Chaos androids' are very much proto-necrons. More akin to the current range than the metal necrons that were first released for 40k.

RT was 87. Chaos dread was in the '91 catalog, and was probably available a few months prior via a WD advert (which all of the catalog pages were) so possibly late 90. 2nd edition was '92. '95 was already 3 years into 2nd edition. Chaos dread pre-dates second edition by a year.
Space Crusade was 1990 (and according to wiki - a not reliable source at the best of times - even though in partnership with Milton Bradley games (big American board game company) Not released in North America).

So, yes, the plastic SC dread (stumpy) probably DID predate the metal dread. The taller one was only released in the SC EXPANSION, Mission: Dreadnought and there were a few months between the releases and is more iffy.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

ok people, this isn't a timeline discussion. focus focus FOCUS! ahah.

Soooo.... using the taller set of legs and putting it on a 60mm base brings it to about 3 1/3", whereas a standard dred nowadays is about 2 1/2" it seems (side by side comparison)

So maybe i bulk out these babies and make them some sort of count as contemptors?

the smaller legged one's are small, and look more fragile, maybe put some cron stuff all over, add a driver, and make mysellf a stalker or two?

Double autocannons and put them in a grey knight army!!

In all seriousness, paint them up and use them with your normal army. Will be a really nice conversation piece for a game.

If you don't have a use for them, maybe do a diorama with some other old models painted in the more modern style? Might be pretty cool.

I have two as well. Probably using them as fire support Dreads for my night Lords at some point.

It is quite skinny and sinewy looking, bet it would look great as a slaaneshi dread, in black, purples and dare i say it... pinks.

If the old fluff said that these were just marines in suits then why not just run them as such? I mean count them as dreadnoughts in your chaos army, bulk them up a bit with armour or mutations made from greenstuff (obliterator cult). The Chaos Space Marines have been in the Eye for 10,000 years, there is the slightest chance that they may still have technology that's no longer used by the Imperium and, hazard the though, tech that was created in the eye. =P

* I have two of the little ones, but they never see any use. If I'd ever brign them to a game it would probably just to be used for their original use in games of Space Crusade.

Came a good bit before Necrons though, and for some reason I recall the Chaos Androids being associated with the Chaos Squats.

Which would be an odd pairing. I guess there are still Chaos Squats in the fluff because they wouldn't have been on the world eaten by Tyranids...

At one time Orks were paired with Chaos as well though. In the early days it was pretty much Baddies vs. Goodies with IG,Marines,Inq, and Eldar against Orks,Chaos, and Genestealer Cult.

Yeah! i have an admech army too, trying to go cybernetica with the tall ones, at least!

SlaveToDorkness wrote:I have two as well. Probably using them as fire support Dreads for my night Lords at some point.

Actually, i have two of the tall ones and two of the small ones. I'm seriously considering making some harder to shoot at (smaller) necron triarch stalkers outta them, keep the body open and leave a necron inside the sucker, maybe!
