Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge: Welcome to Thunderdome!

It's back! This is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!
Basic Challenge Rules:
1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge theme presented below.
2.) Take a WIP shot of your model(s) before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
3.) Paint your model(s)!
4.) Take another shot of the completed model(s) and send it in to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5:00) the night of the Deadline!!
5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.
6.) Public voting will last for 5 Days. The winner will then be announced a few days later, chosen from amongst the top 5 entries by a hand-picked panel of Dakka Painting Challenge judges.
Notes:
The model(s) you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. This does not claim publishing rights. Once the voting is over, feel free to post your model all over the web !
Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model(s) to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.
Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward...
Images:
The pic of your model(s) may be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels . The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them. If having resizing issues photobucket provides decent editing tools.
The Challenge Theme
Welcome to Thunderdome!
2 Proud warriors. Ones slighted pride. This is a situation that can only be solved one way. A duel!!!
Whether it's Roy versus Decker on a rain slicked roof in cyberpunk L.A., Luke vs. Vader in the Emperor's throne room or even Gandalf battling against the Balrog in the bowels of Moria, duels stir the emotions like no other fight. Intense, personal and usually destined to finally settle a grudge; the battle can be a culmination of previous encounters or simply could be a chance meeting of two titanic forces. Although two men enter, only one will leave!
If you haven't figured it out yet, the theme of this Dakka Painting Challenge is the grand old duel. Paint up two models and have them face off in some thematically exciting fashion!
The Deadline:
Your entry picture (including your WIP pic) must be received by March 8th 2012, 11:59pm Eastern Time (GMT-5:00)
Challenge Theme Rules:
• 2 Warriors locked in battle, any universe and setting you want as long as its a duel.
• No scale or manufacturer restrictions. So if you can best express yourself in 15mm then go for it. Or if a Dreadnought vs. Trygon is what appeals to you, that's great too. Just remember you only have roughly one month to finish!
• Both models must be either be on the same base or if based individually, they must be placed on a single larger base that incorporates both models together.
The Prize:
The Winner Recieves: Living up to the epic nature of this challenge, we've got some suitably epic prizes this time. The overall winner as usual will get bragging rights, a Dakka front page announcement of your glorious victory, the respect from your fellow modelers, and also an awesome $100 gift certificate to spend on anything you want from miniwargaming.com!
Second and third place finishers will also each be getting a $50 gift certificate as well...and who knows, there may even be even more prizes available if there are enough quality entries to justify it. If you've ever hoped to win a prize from a Dakka Painting Challenge, there has never been a better chance, so get your brushes ready to paint!
A HUGE thanks to miniwargaming.com for sponsoring this challenge, and to Dakka user inquisitorlewis for doing all the legwork of collecting and posting the entries for voting!
----------------------------
If you have ANY questions regarding the competition, please feel free to ask here or email: dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com

So I am going to post some questions and answer here, to keep me from answering the same questions numerous times. I will continue to amend this post with any further questions that may be asked, and an official answer.
"In the challenge you mention that you need to paint 2 Models.
But what about about having additional models?
For addition to the environment or display?
Not actually involved in the duel but watching from the sidelines?
Or involved but not one of the duellists?
Or a one versus many duel? One terminator with a flame thrower versus some ripper swarms (as an example)?"
All of these things would be fine. The rules state that you need 2 models dueling. Anything above and beyond that is allowed. I don't want to prohibit creativity on this project. I really want to see what Dakka has to offer.
Ouze wrote:OK, dumb question. I have a model I've started assembly on, but haven't painted. It's still in around 6 pieces or so. However, some of the parts have been primed black - I was going to start painting it next week. Would such a model be eligible, or does all (or most) of it still need to be bare plastic\styrene\metal\whatever? I can certainly come up with something else, if that's not appropriate - just wonder about other projects I may have primed but never started painting.
Excited to see another painting competition!
No issues with a primed model. Primer only takes a few minutes anyways. I don't see that giving you any unfair advantage.
heartserenade wrote:Interesting! I think I would have my first ever miniature painting competition!
Oh, question: do we have to show every part of the diorama in the WIP photo (for example, statues, the base etc.) or just the dueling models?
A good overall picture of the project. We want to make sure everything has been painted new for the purpose of this competition.
heartserenade wrote:Follow-up question: any restrictions with photomanipulation? Say, change the background for a more dramatic scene, lighting effects, etc.?
As long as your'e not manipulating the colors of your models you should be fine. Go to the following link and take a look at what others have done in the past for some good examples. I would say this competition is following the same suit as previous versions.

Cutthroatcure wrote:So we have to submit the WIP when we submit out entry in March?
I am pretty sure I could have a ton of fun with this!
Correct. Send me 2 pictures. One of the completed project, one of the WIP. Please send no more than 2 photographs. If you want a montage you will have to do that yourself before sending. Remember if you send multiple pictures of the completed project I will have to pick just one. Therefore it's important that you know exactly what picture (or montage) you want published.
Also it is a good idea to name your piece. Do not include your name in the file. Just the title of your project.
Make sure in the email with the picture files you have your screen name in the subject heading. I will make sure to keep careful track of what project belongs to which member.
It is best to make sure to follow these guidelines. If you don't, I will do the editing myself, but it may not be exactly what you want.
If any member needs any help please don't hesitate to contact me. I will help point you in the right direction. You can send an email to the address above, send me a pm here, or continue posting in this forum. I will continue posting all questions in my first post so everything is conveniently located.
Disjointed Entity wrote:How many entries may we have for this competition? I'm torn between two ideas.
One entry per person.
ghosty wrote:Question: Say you have a miniature that you started a long time ago, and never finished, but had put up pictures of it on Dakka, if you completed it for the competition, could it be entered?
Going straight by the rules, no. Your entry must not have been shown anywhere online.
Also having a partial paint job is getting a leg up on the competition.
BrotherHaraldus wrote:Sign me up.
BTW, is it OK if i make it together with someone else? (for only one entry, of course)
All painting must be done by the actual entrant.
xSoulgrinderx wrote:For this competition is there any restriction on the type of models we can use? IE: can we use conversions from Reaper, Armourcast, warhammer fantasy, custom green stuff models and all that jazz?
No restrictions. Mix and match, kit bash, whatever makes you happy.
ghosty wrote:Surely if it hasn't been painted prior to the start of the event would it not matter if the converting had already started? I just want to see where I stand in this.
Your assumption is correct.
Ecstasy in Service wrote:Ok question really quick:
I love the idea and the concept of this contest, I so happen to have a interesting piece of terrian I would like to incorperate into this but it is already painted and not by me. Is it ok for me to pose my two duelists on this terrian, unpainted for WIP?
So you are only asking about a WIP picture?
Anything painted before the announcement date would not qualify for the contest.
