Hello Dakka,

I want to make a homebrew chapter of my own gowever i having trouble creating it. I have few ideas but need some help.
I am new here but have been visiting this site since the start of 2011 and have only just created an account. Anything that has N/A means i havent thought about or have no idea.Any C&C is wlecome, Here's what i got so far:

Name: The Coven.
Primarch: Unknown.
Warcry: Not sure.
Specialty: Chaos and traitor marines. ( Willing to change this)

Chapter Master: Telric Valouris.
Chief Librarian: Manus Farin
Chief Chaplain: Gerric Manor
Chief Apothecary: Fulgris Goren.
Chief Techmarine: Adrium Inus

Homeworld: N/A

Once again, Any C&C is welcome and thank you very much.

Not really much to C&C on... The names are good but thats really all there is. What is their history? What are they like? What tactics do they use? Need to expand more before anyone can really comment on your stuff.

I've finally been able to get some more ideas. their homeworld is Severence-XIY which is a death world, it is covered in vast seas with islands about the size of australia, they have a preference for plasma and flamers, they have heavy use of devastor squads and dreadnoughts. They do prefer orbital drops when it is permitted. They do have fierce hatred for Nurgle's followers ( still unsure about how it can to be). They seem to only use Mark VIII,VI and IV becuase at the time they were created, they were unable to get any other armor types. The chaplains use specially blessed shields instead of a crozius arcanum ( Can you do this?)

Companies are designated like so:

1st: Honorguard/Elite Veterans.
2nd: Dreadnought company.
3rd to 5th: Mechanised Assault.
6th to 8th: Devastator Company.
9th to 10th: Scout and Reserve Squads.

Sounds good so far. My belief is the characters and the 'why' behind the chapter, ie preference for plasma, will start to take shape as you write, its easier to develop iterative rather than single moment brainstorm.

Chaplains keep their crozius', its their mark of office. They cant take SS in vanilla codex from memory, although they do come with 4++

Thanks, I'm not really sure if i want to play the game but i really like modeling and what looks cool if you know what i mean. I thought crozius in the form of a shield would be cool.
They are a very secretive chapter. They refuse to take off their helmets in front others, only those in the chapter know what each other looks like. They are some what of relic hunters and will help other chapters however only it furthers their cause.

What relics are they looking for please explain. Are they looking for relics to do with there primark or the emperor or just random relics.
There warcry could be we will find wherever you are.

The are looking for the relics of the past from heresy era and earlier, anything to show them who their primarch is and their history. As of now their warcry is "Only in death will you find salvation". They are currently searching for a nurgle warband, the reason is only known to the chapter master.

Kind of Dark Angel/Mechanicus?

Antiheros?

Could work however the rest of the fluff dictates if you stray too far down that path at some point they will get confronted, ie supplies cut off and all sorts of other troubles

Thus perhaps prickly but not totally removed from dealing with imperial bureaucracy?

They are somewhat like DA/Mech in terms of being very secretive due to a certain reason which i'm still in the process of brainstorming. In no way whatsoever have i thought about them being heroes/antiheroes becuase my thoughts of 40k, there's no such thing.

I'm currently writing a short story about why they are searching for the warband, Also the Inquisetion will be involved at some point time due to their secretive behaviour.

Can SM have sonic weapons or gauss weaponry? I think it'd be cool if there was sonic weaponry albeit non-chaos sonic weaponry. I was hoping to intergrate stuff like that into my fluff and or army.

"Brother, Join me and we'll be united once again." Spoke the sickly voice.

"NO! Areknai, I will not join you fools, Chaos will not give you what you want!" Yelled Telric to the big, bulking figure which reeked of death..

"You were always the fool, Telric. Nurgle gives me exactly what I want, He gave me immortality!" Replied Areknai.

Telric wasted no time in replying to Areknai in the form of a superheated round of plasma to his shoulder, burning a foul smelling hole in his shoulder plate followed by a swift boot kick to Areknai's chest, sending him flying to the wall.
Areknai filled surprise tried to dodge the plasma shot but due to his big bulking body filled with all manner of filth he was too slow.

Telric slowly started walking to where Areknai laid, he holstered his plasma pistol and pulled out his power sword. "Your time is up, brother." Telric said.

Areknai while still lying on the ground completely out of energy, replied with " Not today" and he initiated his personal teleporter. Suddenly a great white flash appeared where Areknai laid and then quickly dissipated, Areknai was no longer there.


Just something I wrote up. Hope you like it and please feel free to give some C&C.

Telric's armor is cover in religous scripture, Gerric's crozium is formed into a powersword/mace with interchangable head, Manus's armor isn't the usaul blue becuase he got sent to deathwatch and they allowed him to keep his armor becuase it was heavily customised. Adrium has similar creatures to the watchers in the dark but they are more machine then creature or man. Fulgris also has a very big secret that if exposed could cause them to turn renegade. The reason they hunt nurgle followers is becuase Areknai is Telric's actaul blood brother who sought a different route after contracting a mysterious illness.

Thats very good. Interesting chapter background there.

I was going to call them either Corpse Eaters or The Coven but i chose the coven becuase C/E sounded too cliche but it would of gave me an excuse to use fantasy parts and i got the idea the coven while watching supernatural.

anyway their insignia is a candle with a a full moon in the back ground. i have decided they'll have quite a few servitor due of various xeno and human nature becuase in i think it would look cool as well as tying into their secret.

I still haven't got any models, im broke unfortunately and the models are expensive as all fething hell!.

Your crozius/sword could be pretty cool. Have it wear the head is the normal but a sword blade could come out of the end of the crozius.

Maybe the power sword is at the opposite ends the pull can come apart to make 2 seperate weapons

Looking forward to seeing them. The Black Templar kits usually have a lot of candle related stuff. Chaplain Grimaldis could make a good center piece model wih his candles and stuff and he has multiple servitors with him. Check chapterhouse studios, maxmini and other popular places because they often have some candle bits and pieces

Loving the background of the Coven 3Strike, some interesting and pleasing concepts there. I would love if you could clarify why they are called the Coven however, seems intriguing. Maybe they are secret worshippers of some cult, a cult who worships the elements, a cult who worships their primarch or because they don't know their primarch some invisible entity perceived by them as a god. Anyways, good luck and keep up with the background.

I never really understood why i chose the The coven but it sounded cool at the time. I was thinking of it being that the all the chief leaders of the Librarium, Forge, Reculsiach and Apothacarium along with the chapter master lead a council type meeting every so 1000 years or so, to decide the fate of the chapter. B) Your meeting thing is a good piece of fluff but it wouldn't exactly explaint "The Coven". Coven could relate them to D.A. And they are secretly keepin the fallen secret. Perhaps you could say they still praise he god of their homeworld as a S.W. kind of thing.

There are some interesting ideas here. I think you need to develop the Hatred of chaos and nurgle as it is initriguing. Especially the Nurgle part, They could hate nurgle for many different cool reasons.

The dark angels angle is worth going for as well, perhaps they are even are dark angels successors? Maybe they no longer hunt the fallen? I can even imagine the imperium would welcome a dark angles chapter which was not obsessed with finding the fallen.

I agree with the D.A. primogenitor but most Dark Angels and all but a select few of any of the successor chapters know about the fallen. Not even the inquisition knows crying out loud!

@3Strike - I like some of your ideas. I agree with the other comments on the chapter name, the Coven sounds more like a band of witches.

Something that you may want to think about more is your homeworld. If a chapter is from a deathworld that's mostly water, how would that affect their evolution as a chapter? I wouldn't think they'd use a lot of flamers. Underwater combat? Ship to ship experts? Maybe they have so many devastators because shooting under water is more effective then attempting to get into close combat. Perhaps they use giant harpoons? That'd be cool looking.

I like the fierce hatred of Nurgle. A preferred enemy is always a good way to guide your fluff. Perhaps Nurgle controls several of the underwater hives and your planet is in the midst of a nasty civil war. Not only does your chapter hate Nurgle, but Nurgle hates them!

I suggest you gather everything you've written so far, edit it up, add some new thoughts and post it. Give us some more to work with!

Oh why I'm flattered good sir. One of the definitions for coven is a close group of associates so maybe you don't have a chapter master and instead the captains make decisions democraticaly every 10 or 100 years. Maybe your squads are covena so coven = squad

I originally thought this was going to be a Dark Eldar thread to be honest
