Who will win?
Chaos has too few units and their Codex is outdated. The Space Wolves will dominate.
It'll be close, but the Space Wolves will win.
The forces will fight to a stand-still. Draw.
The Word Bearers units are too elite. They will be able to hold their objectives and pull out a win.
The Word Bearers list is rock-hard! It will bring glory to Chaos!

Background
The local 40k tournament, Game Summit, is coming up here in Ottawa, so I've been trying to get in lots of practice games to refine and understand my list better. While I'd gotten in a couple practice games, neither had been in “ideal conditions” (one was a 1500pt game, so I had to cut out 350pts from my list, and the other was on Vassal with an accidental 150pts handicap...). Eric, who is starting to become one of my regular opponents was at Games Workshop with his Word Bearers – coincidentally, his list was 1850pts, which just so happens to be the limit for the tournament. To top it off, Eric was looking for some revenge still for the losses his Word Bearers suffered in our last Apocalypse game. So, we formed up and prepared to do battle once more...

Defiler (4x DCCW)

DEPLOYMENT
We rolled for mission type and got Seize Ground (5 objectives) and Pitched Battle... is it just me, or do I roll this exact scenario really often? We rolled off to see who would get the first turn, and Eric won it. However, he prefers to take the second turn (as do I), so he passed it off to me. Oh well, at least I would get a chance to alpha strike his Vindicators... When we had finished placing our troops, Eric rolled to seize the initiative, but failed.

Eric's converted Chaos Dreadnought. Certainly looks much better than the current model. Also, he had to proxy his Metal Bahkses with Cawdbowd Bahkses.

Turn 1 – Space Wolves
In the Movement Phase, I advanced my Land Raider and Rhinos. The Rune Priest's Rhino hid behind the Land Raider, while the one on the right popped smoke to protect itself from the Defiler's battle cannon. Everyone else remained stationary.

My Shooting Phase was really poor – despite having 4 lascannons and a 10 missile launchers firing at various targets, I only managed to destroy a single Chaos Vindicator. Wow. And just like that, my turn was over.

Turn 1 – Word Bearers
The Word Bearers moved forward, leaving only the Rhinos back to bide their time before they pounced. The Chaos Land Raider moved towards mine, disembarking its Terminator Champion occupants so that they could try to wreck my Redeemer. His Dreadnought didn't Rage or Fleet (it wouldn't do either all game) and went straight towards my Long Fangs. Meanwhile, the Defiler went after my Rhino to assault it.

In the Shooting Phase, Eric had even worse luck than me. His Land Raider, Vindicator and Terminator combi-meltas all failed to destroy my Redeemer, merely stunning it. His Defiler decided to Fleet rather than fire its Battle Cannon.

In the Assault Phase, his Terminators assaulted my Redeemer so that the Chainfist could try to tear through the armoured hull, but having moved 12” last turn he failed to do any damage to it. Meanwhile, the Defiler whiffed on its 6 attacks, only managing to Immobilize the Rhino. Well, that was a pretty bad first turn for both of us. Hopefully the rest are better!

I kept forgetting that the “Rhinos” were there, they kept blending into the table.

Eric's waiting for a 2nd DCCW before he finishes putting the Defiler together, so it's pretty rickety at the moment.

Thankfully the Chainfist didn't wreck my Land Raider – I didn't have much room to disembark my units, so they would have suffered some major casualties! This is the 2nd game in a row that Eric has tried that!

Turn 2 – Space Wolves
I got pretty lucky that my Land Raider survived the Word Bearers' attack, but I still couldn't get my troops out so they were going to need some support. The Rune Priest's squad disembarked and moved to attack the Terminators. I was probably going to lose a bunch of Grey Hunters, but it was worth the risk. The Rhino also moved to shield the squad from the nearby Dreadnought, and popped smoke. Meanwhile, my middle Razorbacks moved forward 6” to get a clearer shot at any enemies now that the Defiler had moved out of their sight. Finally, the Grey Hunters in the immobilized Rhino disembarked and brought their meltaguns to bear on the Defiler.

In the Shooting Phase, my units were pretty lacklustre once again. The Grey Hunters annihilated the Defiler and 1 of the Terminators was killed by the Rune Priest's squad, but all my Lascannons, Missile Launchers and a Multi-melta from the Redeemer failed to destroy (or even damage) the Chaos Land Raider or the last Vindicator again! Daemonic possession sure seems to come in handy!

In the Assault Phase, my Rune Priest attacked the Terminator Champions. Predictably, it was a bloodbath. 5 Grey Hunters were scythed down in return for 3 Terminators, leaving only the Lightning Claws Terminator to fight on. Hopefully I would mop him up next turn...

Turn 2 – Word Bearers
This turn, the Word Bearers' Tzeentch Daemon Prince arrived, landing beside the Chaos Vindicator (drawn by the Icon inside the nearby Rhino). The Rhino then moved to get into position to attack my Long Fangs' objective. Meanwhile, the Dreadnought moved to attack my Grey Hunters, but realized it was out of range, so went after their Rhino instead. The Land Raider then turned to fire on my middle Razorbacks.

In the Shooting Phase, the Vindicator tried to gun down my Land Raider, but its shot missed and scattered onto the nearby assault! 2 Grey Hunters were killed in the blast. The Land Raider was more successful though, destroying the Long Fangs' Razorback (Eric didn't realize there was no one inside of it, otherwise he might have gone after the one with the Grey Hunters). Eric also tried to destroy the Land Raider with a Bolt of Change, but failed to hurt it (even with Warptime).

In the Assault Phase, the Dreadnought charged the Rhino, but did little damage to it due to it moving 12” in the previous turn. He only managed to stun it. Meanwhile, the Rune Priest and Wolf Guard whiffed pretty badly, failing to kill the last Terminator and suffering wound on the Rune Priest in the return.

Turn 3 – Space Wolves
I moved my disembarked Grey Hunters towards the north-most objective, hoping to wrestle it from the Chaos Marines hiding inside their Rhino (they lost 2 members to dangerous terrain tests, including my Wolf Standard!). The Land Raider, now free to move, drove 12” to face the Chaos Land Raider and disembarked its occupants (which was probably a bad move in retrospect).

In the Shooting Phase, my heavy weapons finally started to deliver... not in spades, but at least they showed up. The left Long Fangs immobilized the incoming Rhino, while the Land Raider's multi-melta wrecked the Chaos Land Raider. Everyone else failed to damage their targets (yes, the last Chaos Vindicator was still alive... more-so than GlaDOS).

In the Assault Phase, I failed to damage the Chaos Terminator yet again, and he killed the Rune Priest in return. The Wolf Guard then failed his Leadership test and ran, while the Chaos Terminator consolidated backwards to get to cover. Damn! Meanwhile, the Chaos Dreadnought continued to have trouble with my Rhino... despite hitting my Rhino automatically with S10 attacks, it only shook it, destroyed its storm bolter and immobilized it. I expect more!

Immobilized box.

Turn 3 – Word Bearers
Eric began to move his units on a greater scale this turn. Both Rhinos disembarked, the left squad heading to kill the Long Fangs and capture their objective. The right squad moved into the ruins, securing an objective for themselves. Meanwhile, the Dreadnought headed to contest my left objective and destroy the last Long Fang Razorback. Finally, the Daemon Prince went after my Wolf Priest's squad... whoops. I probably shouldn't have disembarked. I'll have to remember that during Game Summit...

Anyway, during the Shooting Phase Eric's units fired at my left Long Fangs. Due to cover, they saved most of the incoming shots, but were cut down to only 3 Missile Launchers. Luckily, one of the Chaos Marines' plasma guns overheated and killed its owner. The Chaos Marines in the ruins and Daemon Prince also fired at my poor Wolf Priest's squad, killing about half of its members.

In the Assault Phase, the Dreadnought shook and immobilized my Razorback... well then, it's basically a write-off now. Meanwhile, the Daemon Prince attacked the Wolf Priest with a vengeance, slaughtering the squad down to only the Wolf Priest and Wolf Guard! It, on the other hand, was only wounded once. I'm getting into a bad situation here – the Daemon Prince and Dreadnought are still rampaging through my lines and I'm running dangerously low on scoring units...

Turn 4 – Space Wolves
My best chance now was to destroy Eric's scoring units. My fleeing Wolf Guard actually managed to regroup, and moved back to camp the objective in front of the Vindicator – and assault it if necessary, or shoot at the Terminator. My Grey Hunters also rushed to the ruins to try to assault their occupants, but I was distressed to learn that they were just short of making it. Damn, now if the Daemon Prince (which took a wound due to for Warptime) killed my Wolf Priest and Wolf Guard, they would be sitting ducks... However, I moved my Land Raider to block off the Daemon Prince, and to use its Flamestorm Cannons on the Chaos Marines in the ruins.

My left Long Fangs decided to ignore the rampaging Dreadnought, instead going after the approaching Chaos Marines – my reasoning being that, if the Dreadnought wipes out my Grey Hunters, then it won't matter because there won't be any scoring enemies left nearby. They killed 2 Chaos Marines with their missiles. My right Long Fangs then fired all their missiles at the Vindicator, wrecking it. This allowed the Wolf Guard to fire his bolter (I'd used the melta earlier) at the Chaos Terminator, but it passed its armour save (predictably). However, I then blew it away with the Grey Hunters' Razorback. My Grey Hunters and Land Raider then fired at the Chaos Space Marines in the ruins, killing 3 (they had amazing luck with their invulnerable saves).

Finally, in the Assault Phase, the Dreadnought blew up my Razorback (as expected), while the Daemon Prince killed the Wolf Priest and his squad without suffering a wound. He consolidated towards the exposed Grey Hunters. Well... they're dead. Crap.

“That is a die!” -Captain Obvious

Turn 4 – Word Bearers
The Daemon Prince moved to annihilate yet another one of my Grey Hunter squads, while the Chaos Marines reached the base of the Long Fangs' tower and the Chaos Dreadnought moved to assault the Grey Hunters' Razorback.

During the Shooting Phase, the Daemon Prince and Chaos Marines ganged up on my Grey Hunters, killing the vast majority of the squad. In the Assault Phase, the Dreadnought easily destroyed my Razorback, and the Grey Hunters disembarked without incident. As expected, the Daemon Prince crushed my Grey Hunters with ease... however, this meant I could now shoot at it! Excellent.

Turn 5 – Space Wolves
My surviving Grey Hunters decided to play a dirty trick, climbing up onto the 2nd floor of the ruin to escape it. The Land Raider also shifted slightly to get a better shot at the Chaos Marines hiding in the ruin – this time, they would all be hit.

In the Shooting Phase, my 3 Long Fangs fired at the Dreadnought, finally destroying it. Whew! That thing had done a number on me! All of my middle Long Fangs then opened fire on the Daemon Prince, slaying the monstrosity as well. With a single Lascannon shot left, the last Razorback fired at the Chaos Rhino and, despite being obscured, the vehicle was wrecked. Finally, the Redeemer fired its Flamestorm cannons at the Chaos Marines, but they had extremely fortunate invulnerable saves yet again – only 2 died!

None of my units were in any condition to assault anymore, so I refrained from it from here on out. With 2 objectives in my possession and 1 for the Word Bearers (with 1 contested) I could possibly win the game if the game ended this turn...

Turn 5 – Word Bearers
Eric knew he could win the game if he could knock my small Grey Hunter squad off of their objective. He manoeuvred them to get a good shot at me and then opened fire. With 12 bolter rounds and 2 plasma shots, I was in some trouble. Therefore, I elected to go to ground in order to get myself a 3+ cover save. At this point, I wasn't worried about the Grey Hunters causing much damage to the Chaos Marines anyway – that would be up to the Long Fangs! Anyway, it was a successful gambit, as they only lost 1 Marine.

Meanwhile, the other Chaos Marine squad brought both of its meltaguns to bear on my Land Raider. However, they only managed to get a single weapon destroyed result – Eric allocated it to my left Flamestorm cannon.

If the game ended now, I would win it all...
Spoiler:
We got a 4 – the game continues. Damn!

Turn 6 – Space Wolves
Well then, time to attempt to mop up. I moved my Land Raider to contest the ruins objective, successfully running over the wrecked Rhino. I mainly did this because that was how Eric had beaten me in our previous game... what can I say, I'm a spiteful sometimes.

In the Shooting Phase, all 8 my Long Fangs fired at the left Chaos Marine squad, killing everyone except for the Aspiring Champion and plasma gunner. They passed their morale check. My Land Raider failed to kill anyone with its Flamestorm cannon (cursed invulnerable saves!) and my right Rhino (which had been immobilized way back at Turn 1 by the Defiler) actually managed to repair itself. Cool!

Turn 6 – Word Bearers
Eric kept the surviving Chaos Marines stationary so that the Aspiring Champion could fire at the lone Wolf Guard. Surprisingly, he actually managed to kill the veteran, who had gotten pretty lucky up until now. In the process, Eric bumped me off of one of my objectives. The other Chaos squad fired their meltaguns at the Land Raider again, this time only managing to immobilize it. Holy crap that thing has gotten seriously lucky all game!

We rolled to see if there would be another turn and...
Spoiler:
...there would be! Of course, Eric had said earlier that “our games always go to Turn 7 so we might be here for a while.”

Turn 7 – Space Wolves
There wasn't much I could do, so we went straight to shooting. If I could kill his last 2 Chaos Marines on my objective, then the game was in the bag. I fired all my Long Fangs at them again, and they were easily annihilated. Eric conceded at this point.

Total objectives:
Space Wolves – 2
Word Bearers – 0

VICTORY FOR THE SPACE WOLVES!!!

AFTERTHOUGHTS
Wow, yet another close game between Eric and I. While I was able to neutralize some of his big guns, his Daemon Prince and Dreadnought were both enough to cut a swathe through my forces. I was lucky to take them both out, or I would likely have lost. I also got really lucky that my Land Raider did not blow up, despite taking 2 turns of melta fire at point-blank range.

Anyway, I like my tournament list, but I have a couple changes I'm considering. For one thing, I want to add a power weapon to the 3 largest Grey Hunter squads, because I feel that their offensive capability is much weaker without it. I might also drop 1-2 members from the 10-man squad – I feel that the 2nd meltagun is a bit of a waste, since the Land Raider has no fire points, and it feels like total overkill to have 4 melta weapons firing on one target (2x meltaguns, Wolf Guard's combi-melta and the multi-melta on the Land Raider). I would also put this melta on one of my 5-man squads. Then again, the extra melta weapons should cause more wounds than the power weapon would have, for cheaper, so maybe we'll just keep it the way it is... Any suggestions are welcome by the way.

The 'who is that' guy is probably someone playing in the same tournament as you lol (well, unless they're doing another one somewhere else the same day with the same points cost? )

Good report and a good game though.
Quick question. Vehicles contesting objectives is normally a last turn move for me so Im not quite sure how it works.
If your land raider was immobilized, doesnt that prevent it from techically contesting an objective? Or is that just for trasports trying to capture can only contest? I'm wondering cause if that's the case, then Eric could have played out the last turn and it would've been a draw, so long as you didnt wipe out the Chaos squad in the ruins.

Oh well. Either way, like I said. Good game and a good report!

Well I don't think he is because his flag says he's American and the tournament's on the 18th, not the 25th. So... yeah.

And yeah, it can contest an objective if you're immobilized, but Eric had only 1 objective and I held 2 (the 4 Grey Hunters plus 5 more in a Razorback).

Nice Battle Report! Love the pics in this one since it gave the battle a very easy to follow read. I do have one thing you will want to tell your Chaos player and that is he can't use the Personal Icon's to safely deep strike his demon prince in. Don't have my codex on me, but I remember it saying only models who are teleporting can use it. If they have jump packs (or wings) then they have no effect.

Also interesting paint scheme for your Wolves, like the dark colors intiially I thought the word bearers where them lol.

Ah, I suppose I didnt even look at his flag. That's good to know about the contesting thing. I'll have to keep that in mind. It just normally doesnt come up in many of my games, so I've never really needed to know.
And right! I totally forgot about that other Razorback. I kinda saw it there, but didnt realize it was beside an objective. I guess tomorrow against Atlas I'll have to pay a bit more attention lol
