Soo starting up with 40k,i went for the space marines since i already had a few boxes^^
after playing my first match i found out i needed more rhinos( only haveing one ^^ ) used a block of styrofoam cut roughly the same sice as a rhino as a stand in while playing(standins are a common sight in my gameing circle...sadly)
when i came back home i took the styrofoam standin and starting cutting into shape, mainly cus i was bored ^^ so here it is :

That's pretty innovative. I've never heard of or seen anyone else ever try something like that. Let alone actually pulling it off. Great work.

That is pretty darn nice. With the effort you put in you should keep it around. No reason to trash it for GW Rhinos. I always keep my scratch-builds around for apocalypse games even if official models replace them as it is fun for mega battles.

you see i need a landraider... but the gw'ones are sooooo pricy o_o found the mesurements online and my m8 is working on a hotwire cutter for me ( building loades of terrain and starting on a battle board for the club sooo he thougt it would help )
only problem is if im to make a landraider id want somthing to put ontop of the styrofoam as to get a smoother surface, and make painting easyer... somthing that i could basecoat se a lot of people useing plastic card, thing is i have no idia where to get it or what they call it here in norway o_o

Your Rhino looks really good there. That is coming from one scratch builder to another. I myself use the 1/4 in. styrofoam to do my building. Its a lot easier to work with and it wont go through all those blades. A thin layer of posterboard works well to keep it from melting when you paint it.

Spray it with a good coat of acrylic sealant then spray it with paint after the sealant cures, it should allow it to stand up to paint much better

Hey that's pretty neat! I'm impressed you got edges that sharp with foam. If you can make rhinos like this from foam...keep trying and refining and dont worry about buying them. Save some bucks!

I'd rather play against this proxy then a real, unpainted rhino.

There is a company called Hot wire foam factory which sells a product called Foam Coat. Foam ccoat comes in several textures and would be perfect for coating your foam models before painting them. I use their stuff a lot when making terrain. They also sell something called Boost, when mixed with foam coat it makes it very tough and durable.

Wow. I came into this thread expecting to see a chunky, misshapen monstrosity, but this thing is cleaner and better proportioned than most of the template-based card or plastic scratchbuilds I've seen. I'd definitely keep it around, even if you replace it with the stock model for normal games - you can never have too many models (until the day you're crushed to death under their weight, but one could argue that that's a good way to go ).
As for a sealant, I usually just brush over foam with a mixture of PVA glue and cheap acrylic craft paint. Nothing fancy, but it's enough to allow me to spray on an aerosol primer/basecoat without melting the piece.

Reminds me of a Metal Slug tank. Quite well done, you should do a land raider or baneblade.
