If you're familiar with FW XV-8 and XV-9 suits then you know they are all supplied with 60mm bases. Stock GW suits come with 40mm bases. I realize from a rules perspective I'm safe going with either for the XV-8s. The XV-9s don't have a GW counterpart so they'll require the 60mm...am I correct in this statement or can I downsize to 40mm if I choose to?

Now to a matter of aesthetics or base-shui if you will. I've attached an older WIP picture of one of my suits mounted on a 60mm base. While it gives more room for posing, which I didn't take advantage of here, I've found that the suit seems a little dwarfed by the base. Not only that but in the games I've played I found it difficult to maneuver a team of suits around the board with these bases, especially on terraced hills. Thoughts? Should I abandon the 60mm bases and re-mount the suits on 40mm? I'm split on the matter.

P.S. I haven't built any XV-9s yet but I suspect they may look better on the 60mm due to their size.

Well...

I'm planning to start a WIP blog in May once I finally graduate college and finish these sucker. But since you asked I have a few more pics.

Yes, the TX-42 in the background has the cockpit done but the body is only base coated and washed. I haven't re-established the color and highlighted yet.

Here are a few pics of the TX-42 crew and my completed FW squad. I'm considering going back and adding light weathering, chips and replacing the black with red as the secondary color on the armor and panels (but not the FW body suits).

I promise I will absolutely start a blog in May.

Oh what the heck, since I'm derailing my own thread...here's few more.

After that could I get some feedback on my dilema?

If you are running them as standard battlesuits then in my view you can easily go with the 40mm bases. Forgeworld tends toward the epic rather than necessarily thinking about how easy it is to play with the models

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Lost in Australia, somewhere.

Surely a smaller base would mean fewer CC models in base contact with your suit, which would only be a good thing for a Tau.

Off topic, where did you get the pouches for the Fire Warriors?

The larger pouch is IG and the smaller one (which you can barely see) is the SM three pouch with one cut off.

@ Flinty and FrozenSoul80: thanks for the feedback...processing the info! Didn't immediately consider the CC aspect.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I think the big base looks fine.

I've put my Stealth suits on 40mm bases because I found the 25mm too small.

From a player perspective I doubt people will complain if they are put on 40mm since that is standard for Crisis suits.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

For 40mm bases, it creates a bonus in assault because less models can get in base-to-base contact. If you don't care about that (or you play like me, and if they get into cc they are dead already) I wouldn't bother changing bases, especially since you have done such a nice job on them

@Kilkrazy: I wonder if a compromise would be to make 40mm bases that are slightly extended via the "slate"? See how I've make some of the slate extend on the 25mm? That way I can still pose a bit but not have such a big footprint on the table.

@Aeroroot: Thanks for the compliment, those were homemade knockoffs of the Micro Art Studio ruin bases...they even have little Tau lettering on them. I know what you mean about CC...if you're in it, you've mess up. My doubts about the size only appeared when I was trying to JSJ and the terraces on the hills we so small that I ended up having to move them to a higher (exposed) position. Anyway, if I do switch to 40mm I'd probably save the 60mm for XV-9s when I have some.

I'm actually toyig with the idea of making a 40mm base witha 25mm 'cutout' so I can base my XV-25s on the 'proper' base for play, but have a larger base for display purposes.

I also saw close combat Tau at a game last month. Custom built list for Tau v. Tau, but let me tell you, Three suits with twin-linked flamers are NASTY.
