I've been lurking around for a while now. I've been really impressed by what I see. I thought it was time to contribute my first post. I started playing 40K in the late 1990's, but took a bit of time off from the game mid-2005 or so. I recently started back into it and feel my Orks need a bit of an upgrade. So, I'm working on a new Big Mek with Kustom Force Field (KFF).

Here's a picture of my current one:

Now the photos of his replacement at completion of the build but not painted. A few of the parts are re-used, so have some colour on them, but this will all get a new base coat. For the cybork body I'm using a meganob with some added mechanicals, wires and exhaust. As you can see, his Mek's Tools are custom, as is the fuel can for his burna.

His neck is entirely Green Stuff. I wanted to get the effect of him straining forward, on the look out for new scrap to loot. I was also hoping to get a bit more size out of the basic mega-nob model, while trying not to make his neck look too long.

Enjoy!

Awesome! Nice use of cables and what I assume is guitar string.

All in all suitably Orky.

Thanks Sydewynder. Yes, it's guitar string. It's my first use of it. It gives the right look, but I found it more tricky to work with than I thought it would be. It likes to straighten out so getting the bend to look like it is, hanging the way I wanted, was more challenging than I expected.

I like It man, all the stuff You put to create the Mekky part makes It awesome.
Looking forward for more conversions.

Subbed.

So, I haven't had as much time to work on this as I'd like (Do we ever? ) and now I will be traveling for about 10 days, so no progress to come for a while. I thought I'd post what I have anyway.

I haven't decided if I want to keep the darker green look for his hide or lighten it up a bit. Suggestions?

Guts.

Try to highlight the skin with thin, bright-grey-green stripes. Looks very nice that way!

He does look good with the dark coat but I think he may need another layer to add more depth. I do love the KFF and Choppa though great job!

Thanks for the tips and compliments. When I get back from travel, I'll add another shade for depth.

Finally back from travel and able to spend some time on this fig. Spent more time on his hide and basic blocking.

Also my first experimentation with a gem technique on his cybork eye.

His hide turned out lighter than I was originally planning. Generally, I like the way the thin line style (vs. trying more blending) turned out, but it didn't seem to work as well on his hands. I may go back to them later.

That is an excellent model.Great work, great idea. Love the mekboy.

What's the top looking like?

I took a quick gander at your other work - very impressive! I hate to say this since I am a Badmoonz player and have been forever, but it is really refreshing to see an Ork army that is NOT yellow. Nicely done. I especially like that warboss.

@MrMerlin - Thanks! Your comments are encouraging.

@Gorgrimm - Thanks as well! The top hasn't progressed much, but I should be able to post a pic soon. I'm trying to get a lava like effect between the plates on the ball, but using Greens instead of Red/Orange. Kind of like a green ball of energy being contained by metalic plates. Unfortunately, I may not have enough space between the plates for the effect I want. That's OK. If it doesn't turn out, I can simply pull the ball off the top and make another one.

Thanks for the comments on my other work. Funny you mention not being yellow... I've got some ideas brewing in my head to do an Ork army with a construction worker kind of theme. Although they would obviously be the wrecking crew They would all be in yellow and orange warning jackets with yellow vehicles made to look like an Orks take on bull dozers, dump trucks, etc. Yest another yellow Ork army. Still, I've got a bunch of stuff to finish on this army first so I won't be starting that for a while.

Lol, wreckin' crew. Yeha I can't complain, I have a huge Bad moons army I'm re-doing, so yellow. Back in the day everything was Goffs, now it seems like we do a large number of bad moons. refreshing and well striking to see the blue. Keep it up.

That ball sounds like it'll come out pretty sweet. Can't wait to see it.

I've managed to make some decent progress this week. As always, feedback is welcome.

The mold line on the hose of the backpack is really bothering me. I will need to get rid of that. I may replace the hose itself with guitar string to match the other hoses.

@Selvaggio - Thanks! Yeah, he is a bit too clean right now. There is a weathering wash on him already, but the lighting in the photo is too bright to notice. I will be adding some scrapes and chips to add more weathering and then another wash. A bit more detailing before that stage though.

@tipios - Thanks! Not sure about a glowing ball yet, I've never done any glow work or OSL. I'm also not sure if it will work too well on the ball itself. My preference is if it could be a reflection off something. Maybe I could do some off the support and the bosspole.

Off the support pole sounds good, but if you are unsure leave it as it is. He looks great anyway.

Spent some time detailing, including battle damage and weathering. Here's the latest pic:

There are some more pictures in my gallery if you care to have a look at the full rotation views. Here's the link:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-57228-25339_Ork%20Big%20Mek%20Wip.html

Also, I'm at the stage where I need to settle on some Deathskulz blue tattoo work. Here are a couple of ideas as photo mock ups. Let me know which one you prefer, face or neck ... or if you think I should maybe do both. If you have other ideas, let me know that too.

It should be pretty obvious, I'm also playing around with lighting in the photos. It is challenging to ge the balance between enough light, but not having glaring bright spots. I tried diffusing the light more in these shots and that seems to have helped.
