Subject: Atlas' Blood Oath (BA) vs. Andilus Greatsword's Great Company (SW,) VASSAL showdown (3000 pts)
Alright folks, so I've had a few games with Andilus' wolves in the past, and every time I usually either get my arse kicked, get gimped by bad rolls and get my arse kicked, or kick my own arse through bad moves. My Librarian, Atlas, Blood Punisher has been undergoing some interesting periods as of late but I went back to one of my older lists and Andilus and I agreed on a 3000 points game so with his assistance, there was a new list crafted.
Spoiler:
Also, those who don't like reading Vassal reports, please don't comment saying that and then nothing else. It's.....not really that helpful and is kind of a drag, I'm not going to drive almost 9 hours just to have a game on the tabletop with Andilus like this, especially as regularly as I do. So please, if you don't like reading vassal batreps, either don't read this, or read it because you might very well be entertained but don't come complaining to us
But I always dread facing the Space Wolves so I couldn't help but have some feelings of apprehension going into the game. I have never won a game fair and square against Andilus and this would be my second game of 3000 points ever, so I went into this fairly nervous. Atlas was upgraded once again to Epistolary status with the Sanguine Sword/Unleash Rage combo packed on, and granted a unit of Honour Guard and fighting alongside Mephiston. He would be facing Andilus Greatsword, a deadly Space Wolf rival and of course the avatar of my opponent, as well as Njal Stormcaller and Arjac Rockfist, as well as a formidable Wolf Guard Terminator deathstar.
With that, I'll release the list.
Blood and Ceramite is the pending name for this list, as a sort of shoutout to Unification-era Germany and Bismarcks "Blood and Iron".
Atlas' BA Host of Blood - Blood and Ceramite build (3000 points)

So, would you like to see this contest of might? Yes, you say? No? GET OUT.
Alright so next we laid out our models via VASSAL, as always. We had our idle chat, and soon enough we rolled for Mission and Deployment.
MISSION:
Spoiler:
Annihilation
DEPLOYMENT:
Spoiler:
Spearhead
We then rolled for initiative, me winning the roll and choosing to go first, quick and bloody. I chose not to reserve any of my units except obviously my dropping furiosos despite playing DoA for many previous games, and rolled for the Red Thirst. I ended up with two thirsting units, but both of them had sanguinary priests.
Spoiler:
Here's how the deployment looked:
Spoiler:
I chose the top left quadrant of the map, and although it would be a bit of a squeeze I made the marines and ravens and Mephiston as close to the bubble as possible, Atlas in the top right Raven and a unit of footslogging marines in the lower one. Andilus decided to be a bastard and reserved his venerable dread, land raider bearing his deathstar, and 9 GH + 1 Wolf Guard in a rhino. He deployed his razorbacks with the intention of blowing my ravens out of the sky as well as possibly some furiosos where they may land, and his long fangs on the rooftops in order to also provide heavy anti tank firepower. Andilus tried to seize the initiative but came up short on the roll. Without further delay, I made my move.
I'll be making this rep without splitting up the phases as I took pics rather infrequently in this game.
TURN 1, ATLAS
Spoiler:
I took some time to determine where the furiosos would drop. As they were at high risk from lascannon shots and barrages from krak missiles I foresaw them not to last very long, so I decided to drop one into a sort of alleyway leading in between the two buildings on the right, scattering a little but making a safe landing. The other one, interestingly, I had intended to land in front of the lone wolf, maybe have it shoot him up along with the other forces, as I've known that thing to be pesky on numerous previous occasions. It scattered however, and humourously landed right next to the other one. I had the left one pop smoke as it realistically didn't have anything in line of sight and it was just too risky to try and maybe kill one or two models with flamer or melta and then risk getting blown up.
I moved my ravens flat-out, so as to maybe get the cover saves against those pesky long fangs and still make efficient delivery of troops. My marines moved out, and you can see that any of them that tried to make running rolls didn't do very well. Mephiston successfully glided into the cover of the battered silos in the upper middle eastern quadrant of the board.
The shooting phase was rather quick and slightly unsatisfying. I was nervous about the presence of the Lone Wolf (I should not have been, looking back, he wouldn't have done anything that turn most likely) so I peppered him with some shots. My predator fired away with lascannon shots but only killed his fenrisian wolves, I had one raven fire a lascannon shot at him so as to soften him up for my assault (but it failed.....unbelievable, I reaaaally should have just fired at that other razorback) and my other raven fired a melta shot at the left razorback, causing it to explode, and killing one of the Grey Hunters inside. Not too bad, and that was the first kill point of the game. My right furioso was standing face-to-face with a razorback, so I figured, hey, fire away, as the long fangs currently can't see him! So I fired a melta shot.......nothing. I also pivoted a heavy flamer attack so that it would hit the razorback and the land speeder, and interestingly enough it shook the speeder, removing its ability to blow away my furioso, which was actually really quite perfect.
With that I ended my turn. I could have done a lot more on this turn but I was mostly just nervous as I've had bad experiences with his lone wolf and basically anything he packs with invul saves, and as a result I was still facing a lot of anti-tank.
TURN 1, ANDILUS
Alright, so having lost a couple heavy-hitters, one only for this turn, Andilus moved accordingly to respond to my approach.
Spoiler:
This was gross. I really reaped the consequences here. Andilus really only moved his land speeder and pivoted a razorback to fire at my pred on the hill.
His shooting phase was pretty much brutal. He focused his long fangs (I believe) on my stormravens, knocking them both out of the sky, luckily both of my units (Atlas and his Honour Guard and the jump pack-less marines) passed their pinning tests so nothing bad happened there, but suddenly I fell immediately behind in kill points by 1. He shook my furioso with the right razorback's lascannon shot, and finally fired off two lascannon shots at Mephiston, him getting a successful cover save from one so only losing one wound. With that ended the first turn, and it was at that point I realized that paying too much attention to his lone wolf had some nasty consequences. Oh well. As you can see, we kept count of our kill points on the left end off the board edge, Atlas' librarian sprite serving as my Team indicator and Andilus' Wolf Lord sprite being the other. The turn ended with Andilus having 2-1.
TURN 2, ATLAS
Alright, so having disembarked my units inside the stormravens, I had to carry out the next step of my approach.
Spoiler:
First of all, I had to get mephiston out of the difficult terrain. I cast wings of sanguinius, successfully...
what's that?
No, he was within 24" of Njal's Psychic hood.
Spoiler:
He was hooded, and thus Mephiston tried to roll to simply move out of difficult terrain.
Nope. Failed, only got to the edge.
With that in mind, I moved my marines cautiously across the board as I knew he had a flamestorming land raider yet to come in and that would prove troublesome. I moved a unit in to assault the lone wolf, firing several melta shots altogether but only one successfully breaking past his invulnerable save. They moved into the assault. Both of my angry, surviving furiosos climbed up the buildings closest to each of them to deal with the pesky long fangs, successfully making climb, the bottom one making use of his non-shaken condition and firing off a preliminary few shots and killing a marine. They moved into the assault. My footslogging marines moved in to assault the exposed GH unit.
My lone predator on the hill (can't help but humourously visualize the below image,)
Spoiler:
- he fired off at another razorback with his heavy lascannon payload and managed to blow it to bits, exposing another unit of GH troops.
My assaults were quite pleasing. I quickly wiped out the exposed Grey Hunters without taking any casualties, my thirsting assault squad killed the lone wolf, my top furioso wrecked serious face and took out all the long fangs and the bottom one remained in the assault, only killing 3 marines, which was fine. I finished my turn by taking the lead in kill points by 4-2.
TURN 2, ANDILUS
Andilus rolled for reserves, knowing that I was closing in and poised to wipe out his deployed forces. Nothing came in, much to his chagrin, but he nevertheless made his moves accordingly,
Spoiler:
Again, very little movement took place here. Njal didn't get to use his fancy powers just yet, which in retrospect was an excellent thing (seriously, that mofo has some annoying powers) but he moved his land speeder in to shoot away at the rear of my dreadnought.
His shooting phase was probably not very pleasing, he fired off a multi melta shot and a lascannon shot at my furioso, only managing to stun it. He also fired off a lascannon shot at my marines, having no other targets, and killed one.
The assault phase was quick and brutal. My furioso efficiently dispatched his long fangs and consolidated.
.....that's it. But I had a feeling it was about to get real messy here. The turn ended with 5-2 kill points in my favour.
TURN 3, ATLAS
Alright, so I knew that his heaviest forces would be coming momentarily, with any luck on Andilus part, and as such I positioned my marines in a way so as to not soak up many flamestorm hits if at all possible as I knew he would fire that at me. My footslogging marines went up towards the wreckage of the upper stormraven, and everybody else grouped up at a reasonable distance from the board edge, in a move that was perhaps a little tactically timid but even now something I don't regret. One unit of jumping assault marines with a priest moved to get in range to fire a meltagun, not in melta range, but enough to fire at the lone razorback in between the buildings. Mephiston successfully got out of the cover and moved safely behind Atlas and his Honour Guard. My bottom furioso attempted to get off the building but failed spectacularly and he really wasn't at an angle to shoot at things with decent firepower. My other furioso was of course, still stunned.
I apologize, I didn't take a shot from this player turn, but I did get the end result of it.
My shooting phase was rather short. I think, in hindsight, I was able to see that razorback peeking from cover but I am willing to bet most would concede and say it was fully obscured, if not getting a decent cover save. I fired with my predator at that annoying land speeder and wrecked it, and managed to make the lone razorback explode with my meltaguns! Hooray!
Spoiler:
- Me, celebrating the lighter moments
No assault......
TURN 3, ANDILUS
Alright, so he rolled for reserves...
Spoiler:
His ven dread still didn't come in! But he managed to bring in his deathstar and a rhino bearing Grey Hunters and a Wolf Guard so..... :/ oh joy
This would be the turning point of the game in terms of ferocity of the battles.
Without further delay,
Spoiler:
As you can see, he sent his land raider to the wisest choice on the board, the meatiest area with Atlas at the lead. He also disembarked Njal and was able to cast that nasty little Tempest's Wrath (I think), which I believe is what he used forcing my jumping marines to take dangerous terrain checks. He put this unit behind the land raider so as to possibly deter any units from reaching him. Andilus also disembarked some Grey Hunters. Finally, he disembarked his nasty deathstar with Arjac and Andilus, poised to destroy Atlas and make up for the over 900 points that were spent on that unit and the land raider alone.
The shooting phase was pretty nasty. He predictably fired off that flamestorm shot at my blue-base assault squad, killing 5 of them. Njal also tried to cast two of his other powers, I believe one was Murderous Hurricane (it was hooded anyways) and the other I believe was Vengeful Tornado (EDIT: I hadn't realized being not very well-read on the SW codex but just for my own clarifications I understand now that it's an ability of Njal's that's used every turn, and Andilus rolled 2 that turn so he got two shots) Anyways, he targeted the Furioso with this attack and blew it to smithereens. Gross. The resulting explosion, however, manages to catch his Grey Hunters and his deathstar, killing one from each! Not too shabby! It also spread onto my unit, but their FNP allowed them to persevere.
His HQ pack of Terminators moved into the assault and it was quite crazy. Andilus and I agreed that our HQ's would attack each other and nobody else. Atlas cast Unleash Rage but was unable to survive the combat and thus became a casualty in the battle, making a retreat for now........(not in-game, in-game he got torn to shreds lol)...the rest of the assault played off, but my honour guard slightly underperformed, killing 1 wolf guard and failing to do anything to Arjac either, and the wolf-claw-bearing terminator also wrecked sufficient face. Finally, my powerfist wielding HG marine came up short as well, and I ended up losing the combat 1-4, with just the banner-bearer and the sgt left.
I shouldn't be surprised though, that's a really, really expensive combo, so it had better get a bunch of kills. The turn ended with me still in the lead with 7 kill points to Andilus' 4, but I knew this gap would grow smaller if I gave Andilus the opportunity.
TURN 4, ATLAS
Spoiler:
Rather displeased with that result, I turned the 5 remaining marines from the flamestorm attack to hopefully smash the land raider with their two melta shots, as well as moving the footslogging marines within range. Wanting to tar-pit Andilus I hastily threw another unit of assault marines into the fray with the wolf guard, only taking one casualty as a result, and sent Mephiston into assault range of Njal and his pack, not bothering with Wings as it wasn't necessary, and using wings would have forced him to take a dangerous terrain check as well.
The shooting phase went pretty well, although I only made two targets on that turn. The assault marines fired melta shots into the land raider, making it explode, hitting Mephiston (with no result) and also killing another member of Njal's unit. The predator fires its lascannon shots into the remaining razorback and it also explodes. Really, with all these explosions I'm surprised Michael Bay didn't have a hand in the creation.
The assault was pretty quick and dirty. Andilus continued to curbstomp my marines, killing off my banner-bearer and sending the last honour guard running. My assault marines delivered though, eliminating the wolf guard terminators handily, but also taking 4 casualties from Arjac. They lost the assault but they stayed in the battle thanks to the Red Thirst. Meanwhile, Mephiston had a very simple mission, and that was to kill Njal. He did just that......ending the possibility of more nasty little tricks and also preventing death from Njal's force weapon.
It should also be noted that my furioso was actually totally glued to that building, it could not pass the difficult terrain test for a couple turns in a row so he was stuck up there.
TURN 4, ANDILUS
Alright, it was turning into a bloodbath really fast here. Let's see how this turn ended..
Spoiler:
Finally, Andilus' Venerable Dreadnought came in! He moved it in within shooting range of a few juicy targets. Andilus moved his rhinos to cover and popped smoke with them. He pushed his GH unit from the left rhino right in to attack the footslogging marines that just blew up his land raider. He sent his other remaining GH unit successfully up the bottom right building so as to be in firing range of the drop pods for some easy kill points.
The shooting phase was rather good on my part, as he didn't get anything on the drop pods. *phew* the ven dread got a kill on the assault squad hit previously by the land raider's flamestorm and thankfully the damage overall from the dread was minimal. The Grey Hunters on the left fired a melta shot into the marines, killed one, and went in for the assault.
...and what a nasty assault it was. The Grey Hunters had both a power sword and a power fist, and because he got the charge I only had FNP to save me. He proceeded to kill 5 assault marines while I killed a modest 3, but the marines stood strong despite their losses. Meanwhile, Andilus and Arjac wiped out the rest of the assault squad (Andilus actually focused some of his attacks on the priest but failed to kill it), them not scoring anything on anything......brutal, and the priest failed the ensuing check and ran away. Finally, Mephiston took the remainders of Njal's unit down to 3 men and in a moment of silliness on my part, I actually bothered to roll for Sanguine Sword as well as unleash rage (the second power was more useful)
You wanna know what that earned me?
Spoiler:
- he got perils with sanguine sword, and thus took an unnecessary wound. He also took another subsequent wound from a power fist attack, so he was now down to 2. The marines stood strong in the assault.
The 4th turn ended with my lead in kill points of 9-5.
TURN 5, ATLAS
Spoiler:
I really wanted Andilus dead. He was gaining lots of kills and I didn't want him to chase down my units themselves and kill them, and then reach the meaty easy kill points that were the drop pods. I sent my thirsting marines in to shoot and assault with him. My honour guard marine regrouped but.......whatever, as well as my priest, who I sent with my battered, blue-based marines to shoot up the dreadnought. My furioso hilariously finally got off the building, but he has missed the boat completely in terms of contributing anything else to the game, very disappointed by that. Finally, I sent my remaining full unit of marines in to assault the Grey Hunters.
The Shooting phase was meh. I fired off my predator at Andilus hoping to maybe score a wound or two, and since Andilus had to allocate his wounds I could even insta-kill Arjac, but no dice. I scored one measly wound on Andilus and my meltaguns failed to deliver, so it was up to the marines to finish the job. The meltaguns on the blue squad put the dreadnought down, making it also explode.
The Assault phase wasn't great. From left to right, I lost the assault with the Grey Hunters and killed only one of them, and they sent the remaining sergeant from the footslogging marines into retreat. Andilus took out several marines from attacking at the same time, not suffering any wounds, Arjac even taking the power fist attacks and not failing a single invul save. Gross. Mephiston underperformed, killing only two members of the GH squad and thankfully not taking powerfist wounds. The assault on the top of the building went well in my favour, bringing his unit down to 4 men.
TURN 5, ANDILUS
Spoiler:
Andilus didn't move for this turn.
Andilus fired his rhino's storm bolter at the running sergeant and successfully killed him, bringing another kill point to him.
The assault was pretty bad. Andilus cleaned up the rest of the marines efficiently, although I managed to score one more wound on him so he was down to 1, but then Arjac finished the job, and all that remained was my priest, who ran from combat just like the last one. Andilus consolidated with hopes of finishing Mephiston next turn. Mephiston won his assault, and consolidated towards Andilus. The grey hunters charged the weakened blue squad, and managed to kill 2 more marines from my poor blue-based assault squad, while I only killed one of his merciless charging Grey Hunters. The right assault went fairly well, I had no reason to doubt that if the game went another turn they'd win and consolidate.
The turn ended with me in the lead, 11-7 kill points.
We rolled to see if the game carried on and well........
It did, no sense spoilering this as you have no doubt scrolled ahead to see another turn out of curiosity.
TURN 6, ATLAS
Spoiler:
Really, I didn't foresee Mephiston being able to kill off both Andilus and Arjac due to their invul saves so I went in to save my other assault squad to pull that kill point opportunity away. I moved my honour guard away, not wanting to risk giving Andilus another kill point opportunity.
The shooting phase was satisfying, and quick. I fired off my predator and drop pods at Andilus and Arjac, killing Andilus! Yay, one more kill point for me!
Finally, the assault carried out. I only had two assaults as Andilus was currently not occupied....having wrecked another squad. Mephiston charges into the Grey Hunter unit, killing all of them except the sergeant bearing a power fist. My meltagun marine failed to scratch this resilient marine, but my sergeant killed him successfully, but at the same time that damned wolf managed to score both of his attacks on Mephiston and kill him .. DAMMIT. Oh well.....it was late in the game, one more kill point for Andilus. The assault ended so I got my kill point and the assault squad consolidated toward the rhino, ready to melta/powerfist the hell out of it if there were to be a turn 7. The other assault quickly ended, with my marines consolidating on the edge of the building, ready to pop the rhinos next turn. Luck be willing, I was ready to table Andilus if turn 7 were to come around.
TURN 6, ANDILUS
Andilus had very little left to work with. He tried to tank-shock my marines on the left but they moved out of the way of the rhino, and Arjac, the last infantryman, charged a drop pod.
Spoiler:
The shooting phase was quick and uneventful. Andilus tried to fire with the rhino (I think.....it'd make sense, I'm just not sure if it was 24" away but it happened) at my Honour Guard but failed thanks to FNP.
The assault phase was quick. Andilus wanted to get another kill point, charging the drop pod and with Arjac's powerfist, several attacks, he only managed to stun it!
The turn ended with my 14 kill points to Andilus' 8, so with that we rolled to see if there would be a turn 7.....
Spoiler:
No dice! So to speak.....the game ends at turn 6 with 14-8 for me!
VICTORY FOR THE BLOOD ANGELS!!!
Afterthoughts:
What a bloodbath........
I have only defeated Andilus' Great Company a total of once before, and that was largely because he accidentally gave himself a 150-point handicap and thus he decided not to count the victory. I always have trouble against them, and I was especially nervous about this match because at 3000 points he could run his deathstar and still have a buttload of nasties to throw at me. I think that if I were to use this list again I'd maybe throw a plasma cannon on one stormraven just to give them the opportunity to use for anti-infantry as an option, seeing as I move flat-out with them and that way I can have that choice for one weapon each. I was really satisfied with this game, and I rarely am not happy about the results of Kill Points matches. The lone predator to me was kinda weird, and I considered the idea of maybe running a baal instead...but I'll give that more thought.
Atlas and his Honour Guard underperformed which was disappointing but I have faith that they can do better in future matches. A very good game though, as thanks to the speed of the blood angels I was able to keep a deathgrip on the bottom right quadrant for the entire game. Very in-your-face, and I had no real complaints about my performances other than a few mistakes that really I can't complain about.
Great game Andilus!
Other batreps, in case you liked this one and would like to see previous games reported by moi:
Also be sure to catch a few of Andilus Greatsword's batreps, well-done and I appreciate all he's done in terms of pushing me along in the game!

haha true dat, it just felt funny is all. Very kill efficient though, you're definitely right
I'm just not used to running only one.
Although....when I ran three previously they had autocannons instead of the TLLC and had LC sponsons. If my ravens had survived I guess they would have easily filled that void

Subject: Re:Atlas' Blood Oath (BA) vs. Andilus Greatsword's Great Company (SW,) VASSAL showdown (3000 pts)
I knew that Atlas' list was going to be super-fast, so whoever got the first turn would completely decide how the game went. If I could get it, I could force him to stay on his half of the board and with the sheer mass of anti-tank fire in my list, I could shoot down his Stormravens asap. However, when I failed to get that I had to make a calculated risk. If I could keep my heavy hitters alive then they would be able to slam into Atlas' forces and stop their advance. I couldn't afford to keep them all on the table either, because Furious Charge + Jump Packs is a hell of a combination. However, when I was deploying, I knew it was going to be an extremely risky move to do it - I needed most of my units in on Turn 2, and I needed to kill his Furiosos on the drop. When neither of those things happened, I knew I was in some serious trouble.
On the plus side, that has to be one of Andilus' best performances ever. His unit cost over 900pts and I did some number crunching after the game, and they did managed to make back more than their cost for once! Anyway, the game went badly for me, it would have been interesting if I had some more luck on my side... or if it hadn't been ing Annihilation. I swear to God, almost every single one of my losses in 5th edition has been from Kill Points.
Yup..another funny thing is that everything except the land speeder that I wrecked, was destroyed by explosion XD look at all the craters!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I dunno if your luck was necessarily that bad. If Arjac hadn't gotten so many successful invul saves I might have had a unit of assault marines still in play.

Andilus and Arjac were the only unit with any real luck I'd say.

I'm not sure I've ever seen so many blood splatters in such a close area.Definitely a blood bath. To me, it looked like your deployed in a way such that Andilus was on tough ground. With initiative you were attacking out of open ground into a more urban terrain type. Andilus' deathstar was quite imposing, though.
