So I was bumming around the attic the other day and ran across an interesting box. Inside was original Rogue Trader box of Space Marines, almost totally unassembled. So for giggles I decided to put one together and compare it to a current Space Marine. My plan is to paint one up and see how it looks. so far this is what I got:

The old RTB's still show more character than the current ones.

I think because I never had the chance to be a part of it (being born the year RTB01 hit the shelves), the beginnings of what I now enjoy so much really appeal to me. A friend of mine only collects RT marines that he gets on ebay and I wish I had the patience to do it too, really love these old models!

Like I said, I found this in the attic, undisturbed for 25 years. I am old... Wish I had stuck with it tho, but I suppose we all have to try to grow up once

You may have to grow up! I'm 42, my youngest is 14. I'm the least mature one in my house!
And the RTB01 will always have a special place for me.

Age :-( I was in at my local GW the other day standing behind a young kid who was buying his first boxed set with his dad. I'm fairly sure I was older than the young fella's old man!

Gotta say though while I love the more modern incarnations of 40K there is a lot to be said for the good old days of 40K. Some of the more comical themes which ran through the 40K universe were awesome. Does anybody else remember the old Slaaneshi sonic marines? And remember how funny orks used to be?

Ah, memories.

Anywhoo, looking forward to seeing your RTB mini painted up.

i personally like the new ones better. those are the marines i got introduced to in DoW and they look bulkier and more awesome to me.
i heard some people say that the old ones have more character. and i agree that AoBR marines are really static, but marines that come in the tactical kit can be made in whatever way you want!

I personally don't like the older models, and I think nostalgia-bias is tinting many people's perceptions. Those old models are kinda crap compared to the new ones.

I'll be 36 this year, and enjoy the fact I've been in this hobby for over 20 years. I started with a RT SM box for 30 bucks, and been playing ever since. I like some of the new marines they have coming out, but will always enjoy having my RT marines, since they are the ones that got me into the 40K world. I'm going to go into my storage unit, and find my RT rule book, and see how much its changed from back in the beginning.

So here are some WIP shots, spoilered for your convenience.

This is a proof of concept model, and as such I have taken a few shortcuts. I have not cleaned mold lines, I have not drilled the barrel, and The next ones will be painted without the arms in place.

Hope you enjoy!

I have learned that working outside presents a different set of challenges. Paint dries much quicker, making for an interesting time trying to do thin layers. As in it doesn't work. Doesn't work well I should say.

Here is the dark blue wash

First highlight

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alrighty... Finished him up. The last step i took still has me massively off. After the edge highlighting, I put a thin coat of the smurf marine blue glaze on the model, in the hope that it would tie it all together nicely. Not so much. It covered the edge highlighting completely and left a semi-gloss sheen. Grrrr.... So for ver 2.0 no glaze! (and clean up the mold lines, and drill the gun barrel, and dont glue the arms on until its almost finished). Testing the waters here, would anyone be interested in a P&M Blog of me painting up a squad of these guys?

To the photos!
