This is an idea for a do-it-yourself Space Marine Chapter. I decided on the name 'Tempest Guard" and yes it is trademarked so dont try to bite it . Below are the pics. I dont think im too happy with it. Im thinking about either going darker on the grey and giving the purple more of a blue tint. I also need to rework the lightning down the purple side.....it doesnt look good to me. Also, the silver doesnt really stand out with the grey on the model....so im considering doing gold/bronze in place of silver...thoughts? I am trying to do this army as quick as possible without spending much time on them. C&C about the color scheme would definitely be appreciated.

I like it. Good scheme.

I agree with you on the silver head. I don't think any other metallic will work though.

Have you considered going either bone or black with the head? Also keeping the half bone/purple,lighting on the head might work

I actually really like the silver/blue contrast. It's more subtle than most Marine twin-colour schemes.

For some reason I am thinking it would look awesome as a quartered scheme.

But I really wouldn't want to paint a whole army in quartered , you should though!

Please please please don't F with the colors. I think they are brilliant and are very stormy. Your painting is very nice and clean as well. Overall I love it, good work.

the silver head is very cool man

I like it a lot. I would choose either one of the colours for the helmet and then have vets with the other colour. What would the chapter badge be?

Raptors Response Force 2000pts

Sons of Orar 1250pts

Bora Boka's Mercenaries 1500pts

cult of iocus 500pts

Well thanks for all of the comments on the paint scheme, they are definitely helping me figure out what direction to go. I think I might just play around with the lightning some more but keep the scheme pretty much the same colors.

Thanks. 'Stormy' is pretty much the theme to the army. So I wanted to go with grey and blue to represent overcast skies. I spent some time developing a background for the Chapter....they are from a small planet system on the outskirts of the universe. With the dense foliage of the planet, the only way they can stay mobile is with Drop Pods, Bikes and Speeders....they dont have any mech other than dreads. The planet is always overcast and rainy though

I was thinking of doing something with a lightning bolt .... similar to the white scars. I think a storm cloud would be too cheesy...im open to ideas though

Yeah, I really dont want to paint that either -- It could possibly make the silver stand out a little more, but ive always considered the quartered marines to look way to busy and ultimately they just look sloppy to me.....halved is about the best im gonna do

How about a varient on a satalite image of a hurricane:

It would fit with the stormy theme

where am I? *looks around* Well i'm...errr...I...I...don't know!

Have a broken staff as the chapter badge: At the end of "The Tempest" by Shakespeare Prospero (a magician) breaks his staff thus giving up his powers.
You could then have them as anti-witch marines...don't like Libby's, etc.

That's a pretty cool colour scheme. I really like the subtle lightening on the purple half.

Just out of interest, is this your second attempt at doing the Tempest Guard? The name sounded familiar.

Oh c'mon......well I cant say he copied me....after all that thread is from 2007. No this is my first attempt, I have been touting the name around on Dak for awhile, but finally ahve been able to put some paint to a brush and translate my idea onto a SM.

I fooled around with many names .... storm wardens, tempest angels, tempest knights, tempest lords.....finally decided to settle with tempest guard......but maybe, after seeing that thread, I might have to change it. Thanks for sharing the link.

I like it. The lightning bolts look really cool.

But I am curious as to how you painted it. I like the result, could you give me details please?

Sure, I started with a primer base of black.
-- base coated the purple side with the Base: Naggaroth Night
-- washed it with: Druchii Purple
-- drybrushed a 1:1 mix of Alaitoc Blue and Xereus Purple
-- drybrushed a 1:1:1 mix of Altaitoc Blue / Xereus Purp / Lothern Blue
-- added a small amount of white to the mix and hard lined highlighted

The grey was a 1:1 mix of ceramite white and Codex grey
-- then washed with Seraphim Sepia
-- then I masked off the blue and drybrushed the 1:1 white/grey color again
-- highlight was a 2:1 white / codex grey

pretty simple

Well now I know that them and yours are completely unrelated, I feel it's safe to say that your scheme is much better, not too in ya face.
Any idea on what colours you're going to use for the company and chapter markings? A possible that I think may work would be to use the colours you have already used but obviously invert them?

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

This would give scope to put quotes from "The Tempest" on your dreads, pods etc

Plus the Scheme is perfect!

That's gonna be insanely difficult to do as freehand...

Depending on your colourchoice, I give that a 95% probability of looking like an anus when it's done...

thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I like the broken staff / shakespearean influence and plan to entertain that idea. Painting a broken staff without making it look cartoonish or out of place could be a tough task though. Maybe paint a lightning bolt or an ope book behind it.....not sure yet.

I think im gonna keep the paint scheme as is and just rework the lightning bolt. The problem with the lighting is that you cannot really see it unless your looking closely at the model; I want to make it stand out. I also want to do something with the right kneecaps.....maybe a skull or squad number....something like that. I might change the purity seal color to bright green also....havent decided.

I thin it looks really good, but its very Novamarines, just halved rather than quartered. I think your idea to bring the cream down to a grey is a good one to get a more unique scheme.

Also you want to do a fast paint scheme and you chose a dual colour scheme with freehand on all models? Maybe you ahve a different definition of "quick" than me

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Thanks. I dont know Shakespeare to well....but I am a poetry fan. I wanted to put quotes of Dante Alegheri's inferno on the vehicles of my Blood Angels. Could be a couple months before I really get rolling on this project (have the Pharmacy app test coming up) but I will PM you when I need some tasty scriptures!

Yeah, they are a little Nova-esk.....then again there are few chapters that have a totally unique identity. My inspiration actually came from the nightlords models and chaos. I think once I change the lightning the nova marine comparison will go away.

By painting quick I meant pretty much the base colors --- I chose to drybrush rather than layer and highlight....so its quick in an esoteric way

My chapter badge input..... A grey colered knight shield with a blue lightning bolt on it. It would be easy and stand out nice.

I was thinking of the Eagle Warriors/Angels Porphyr, both of which have a halved blue/white scheme (with the cooler tones of both halves, it feels more like blue and dirty white to me than bone and purple). If you want to keep drybrushing, going from something like Codex Gray up to Astronomicon Gray (in old paint line terms, which are all I'm familiar with) might work nicely for you.

Again, Flinty, we're thinking along similar lines. Great minds, I guess.

For the chapter symbol, if you want to stick to the storm aspect of "Tempest," instead of the literary, there's already a conveniently stylized hurricane symbol that might work nicely for you:

or the eyeless version:

Either one should be easy enough to freehand and images are widely available online if you want to print out decal sheets after a quick swap to your chosen color.
