Hello All!
So here it is...
the long planned start to painting my space marine army! it sure has been a long time coming, approximately 2.5 years to be exact. Finally the brushes and paints come out(Only to find they are all useless and I had to buy a completely new set anyway as I hadn't used them since 2002)
Ok, So to start with here is the standard disclaimer, I have not attempted to paint properly ever! I remember unceremoniously jabbing my horribly assembled Tau models with a heavy brush more suited to painting ceilings than tabletop models in order to have them painted just enough to be allowed to use the games workshop tables. so by no means is this going to be the tabletop gaming equivalent of the Sistine chapel!
it took me about 2 years to decide which chapter I wanted to paint- I knew i wanted it to be a first founding chapter but not the usual(ultras/blood angels) and i also knew that I had plans for either a space wolf or a dark angels army later on down the line... I eventually opted for the Imperial Fists arguably the most devoted of the chapters(also I was given Darnath Lysander as a gift from a good friend and couldn't go back on my decision after that)
So I'm going to keep you posted with my progress including some pics and I could really use some feedback and hints to help me along the way! anything and everything will be and is appreciated.
Thank you in advance! and as always I look forward to the input of the very talented and brutally honest Dakka community!
Cheers

You going yellow/red or yellow/black with your color scheme? Also, what period do you intend to have your Fists from? Heresy or "modern"?

Hey mark! Got your text in the middle of a night shift and didn't think you'd appreciate a reply at 5am, so I am commenting here instead!
Super excited that you're getting some painting done - and imp fists too?! Ive heard the new gw yellow gets pretty awesome coverage, so it might be a stroke of luck your old gear drying up Really looking forward to your first offerings, anyway - reckon you'll get anything finished by Sunday?

well initially I was tempted to go heresy! but due to the new forgeworld models I might wait it out and do a pre-heresy legion at some point in the future... a traitor legion before they turned probably. as for the paint scheme I am not really sure and to be honest i dont know if there is any fluff difference? may be leaning towards yellow/red unless there is any reason why yellow/black ould be either easier or more coherent with modern fluff for imperial fists?
any help on this matter would be grateful!

Hey Tom! Yeah I'd figured you would be one if the first to get involved here! and glad to, as i could use your expertise and advice on this big time! yeah my paints and brushes were in horrible condition so i popped up to GW and refreshed it all. I was recommended a yellow from a young chap at GW and was skeptical as i thought it would be too dark- so i tried it out quickly on a model and its more of a sand yellow than an imperial fists yellow in my opinion... pic to follow... also Im hoping to have a few models done by Sunday at least!
cheers!

ok so quickly put some paint on my first marine (yes its a black reach model haha) and have noticed that my worries were just in that the nice guy over at the Royal Mile GW in Edinburgh has recommended a yellow that I feel to be a little too dark... after all I thought the imp fists were meant to be bright shiny yellow as appose to a sandy murky yellow? the paint he recommended was the Averlund Sunset. I think maybe Yriel Yellow would be more suited.... have a wee look and tell me what you think! thanks!
p.s I will use a proper camera in the future...

He looks pretty good mate. The yellow looks fine to me. Could you not maybe highlight with Yriel to brighten it up a bit if you dont like this?
Im toying with the idea of an Imperial Fists force at some point in the future as I really like the scheme. I think the only difference with the yellow/red and yellow/black is the company colour. Red =3rd Company Black = 5th. I think thats all it is anyway.

Thanks mate! I think the light brightened it up a little more than standard light does but the highlighting with Yriel is something I'm definitely going to try! what I might do is Paint another up using Yriel to start with and compare them side by side.
and im glad I finally have an explination as to what the colour schemes actually mean... thinking I might stick to red... it will go with all that daft drapery lacing lysanders chest.
Do you have any other useful info on the imp fists that i should know when paining?
cheers again

The Company colour info is the same for most Codex Chapters. Not sure what else I can tell you, any questions though just ask and Ill try and answer. As for the 'subbed' it means he has subscribed to your thread so will be notified whenever you update.

Already extremely helpful haha! as i really didn't know what Subbed meant...
thanks again pal! Automatically Appended Next Post: UPDATE!
So I've started painting a second marine in Yriel - Its hard going... much harder to get proper coverage. took me almost four coats to get it looking normal... so if i end up going with this throne alive this will take forever!
On the upside my fiancee got a hold of my paints and an unused Ork from the black reach box set and proceeded to start painting its combats pink... if anyone wants to see that id be happy to post it- proud as punch she was!
a picture of the marine in yriel should be up tomorrow evening if the poker night doesn't ruin me or at the latest on Saturday!
I have to say that shading is not something i've tried yet and im not sure how to really do it...so any tips on that would be ideal!
Have a braw night ladies and gents
thanks again

Hello!
Ok, so quickly finished that second marine earlier tonight to hopefully show you the difference between the yellows. However due to having a normal light and not a daylight bulb... the difference is hard to see...
so... I will show you this one and then upload a new in daylight tomorrow and see if you can see a clearer difference.
However you should notice this,
I have to say that the yriel yellow is a bloody nightmare to paint with... it took me almost four coats to get it looking acceptable.
Original darker colour on the left and yriel yellow(brighter) on the right.

It might be the light or the camera, but these look a little crusty. I think your four coats of yellow might have been too many.
Next one you do, try taking a light off-white color (like whatever they turned Deneb Stone into) and then brush yellow over it. Keep your paintbrush wet so that it keeps your paint thin. Build up thin layers rather than thick ones. Automatically Appended Next Post: You might also hit your stuff with a wash. I think there's a yellow wash; I'm not sure what it would do to stuff that's already yellow. Sepia might be interesting to experiment with since I've never seen anything that wasn't made more awesome by it. Otherwise, a black wash does wonders to metallic stuff.

the camera is grainy as hell but they are a little to be honest0 it may be exaggerating but.
I hadn't thought of adding the off-white- it will hopefully give better coverage. the yriel is just a little too hard to get right.
thanks for the advice! I'll let you know how I get on

The newer yellow is definitely nicer. All you need to do now is go over it with a wash of Gryphonne Sepia to get a little more definition then just hit it with a little more Yriel to highlight. Should look pretty good. The red on the shoulder pad could stand a little highlight as well. What red did you use?

Hey man!
I think so as well! Just a shame it's such a nightmare to paint! UGH
Ah the wash sounds good but not 100% on how best to do it! I have a full pot of Devlin Mud but no Gryphonne Sepia so I'll have to pick some of that up! ok so I used Mephiston Red on both of the models- any other suggestions?
Thinking about how I want the eye lenses on the helmets now
Thanks again for the help man!

Why not try a base coat of Iyanden dark sun a couple of thin coats of that will cover even a black undercoat and give you decent shade to start the yellow. What colour are you undercoating with btw? Theres a couple of ways to use the wash, one way is just to cover the model in it making sure it gets into all the nooks and crannies. This is really effective and once the Yriel is re applied is quite a dirty gritty effect imo. The other way is to carefully paint the wash into all the cracks/details taking care not to get any on the armour plates, this is probably a bit quicker than the first method as although you have to take your time you dont have to reapply the Yriel over the top. Devlan mud could work, Id suggest using it on the darker yellow first though to see how you get on. Id highlight the red using either wazdakka or evil suns scarlet. The scarlet being the brighter.

I am using Chaos Black just now, but a friend of mine(Scarper - check out his amazing P&M blog) recommended Skull White when I was round at his today... So I Might try basing in white instead and see if that makes it easier to paint yellow over?
I am not the most accurate painter as of yet so I'm not sure if the painting it into the nooks is a good idea haha.
I wish I had picked up this wash today with a few new brushes(will bring my issue up with this in a second) but didnt have time and will be back at work all week...
I bought 3 new brushes last week and have painted 2 models with them- and they are already pretty wasted... I really grudge giving GW the money for these brushes- I mean I do everything that the Citadel books recommend.
thanks!

I dont use GW brushes so I cant comment on them but Ifalna on here recommended a brush cleaner 'The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver' check it out on ebay its pretty cheap but does wonders for brushes, I had a couple that were pretty beat up but this stuff sorted them out.
