So as I wind up the core of my Samurai Guard I'm looking at Agryn and Rough Riders as the next units to build. Ogryns are settled as I already have Ogres and various large guns to convert.
So...Rough Riders.
Idea 1: Horse mounted. Probably using the WGF mounted Samurai with IG legs/arms/weapons grafted on. (Traditional)
Idea 2: Bike mounted, using the SM scout bike as the baseline. (modern)
Idea 3: Segway mounted. Using SM bike parts to build Segways for the Samurai to ride into battle. (humorous)

So, any other ideas out their? Thanks in advance.

Horse, unless you're going with very tech-y or special ops, in which case, bikes (too advanced for grunts unless the whole army is advanced).

Segway only if the whole army has a bunch of jokes.

I like the idea of bikes on the battlefield personally. I just think its such a cool idea in general. As for horses i agree with what spirallngcadaver said. If the army is techy then go with bikes instead

Hopefully one day i'll have an army!

Who needs squishy beasts when you can have exo-suits!

I also pondered trying to do some kind of centaur-like suit to keep the 4-legged aesthetic of the rough rider, but it was too hard. Maybe you might have more luck?

I vote bikes, purely because of the 40k feel of them, a friend used bikes and I don't think they look too bad, here's a few snap shots, one is done (apart from base) and the other is WIP

How about yari-jetpack infantry on a bike base? If its guard (with no jetpackable allies) it's pretty obvious what you're going for, and flying at someone with a yari would be pretty swoit ; )

If not, as mentioned above bike if you're a tech heavy regiment, there's a great guard sized third party bike somewhere too. Horse if not - this could turn out very nicely with historic japanese horse armour.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

While riding Cold Ones would look pretty cool, it really does not match the theme of my Army.
Looks like the community is confirming my initial thought...going with the traditional horse mount. Although I will probably go a different route than the usual Bretonian/Empire Pistoliers conversions.

But Japan also gives you the opportunity to do any wacky robot type thing... What about a unit of guys being carried into battle by Asimos Dancing Asimos, no less!

I always dislike the idea of using bikes for RR - they look unbelievable with a lance, and because there is a model class called Bikes, but you're using the rules for Cavalry, there's a potential for confusion.

(plus, now you can actually Ally bikes to a Guard army anyways)

Go HORSIES! (or other riding beasts)

I once thought about converting Rough Riders with Vostroyan heads and bits for Vostroyan/Valhallan Rough Riders. It's such a shame that RRs are quite underpowered and overpriced in the current IG codex...

RR have so much flavour though! I started work on a heavily converted squad of Vostroyan RR but I jacked it in and will be selling them off soon :-)
