Hi all

This is something I have been working on for a while. I make scenery from cardboard but I wanted to see if I could make a vehicle.

It's made from laser-cut 1mm card (like everything else I make is) and it can be made with the hatches open or shut (but this is a one-time choice - they are not hinged).

It is basically a US Vietnam-era M113 but with a few bitz glued on it could represent just about anything in modern or futuristic games.

There are a ton more pictures here, including some unpainted shots and some comparison shots with a more well-known vehicle): http://nothingunpainted.blogspot.com/2013/03/cardboard-tank-m113-apc.html

Cheers
Neal

I've amended the thread header It's not really "scratch built" I suppose. Thanks for the kind words.

The way I did this model, it can be built either as above or as an open topped version. Here is the open-topped one which, now that I have finished the product shot photos, is on it's way to being turned into an ork trukk

Very cool idea! Needs a tonne of rivets for 40k, but that will be very impressive!

Good sir, you must have one of those new-fangled mind readers.

This is kit isn't really meant to address the shortage of 28mm scale M113 models. It is rather meant to be the basis for doing conversions.

I know this forum is supposed to be about finished models but this is where I am going with the open-topped model (now that I have the product shots finished)

Very awesome model! Suits my tastes more than the GW stuff.

Has anyone tried modifying one of these into an IG Chimera? A triple pack of these for $45 would be awesome if there was a way to mount a turret.

How do you do the laser cutting? Is it an industrial machine?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I design the models and then I send them to a local company that does engraving and cutting and they do it for me on their big machine. It is a big epiloglaser machine if I recall.

Sorry to repeat myself here but, does anyone think that with a bit of converting this would make a good imperial guard Chimera? Maybe OP could help here, do you think it would be possible to mount a heavy flamer in that front port on the tank? Also, have you ever tried creating a turret for it that keeps with the aesthetic of the model?

It absolutely will. I am going to work on some generic turrets this week.

The open topped version also has conversion prospects - here's a pic of an ork trukk conversion I did yesterday and there are a lot more shots of it plus the WIP shots here:http://nothingunpainted.blogspot.com/2013/04/ork-trukk-converted-tracked-apc.html

One other thing to consider - the quad cannon turret from my chaos defence line kit fits into the top hatch perfectly

I'll have a WIP shot of that shortly.

Thank you kindly.

I also did an experiment in having the same file cut in 15mm scale to see if it would work and this is the result.

I'm investigating if the 15mm gamers would find these interesting and I am recutting this to make it easier to put together (this one was a bit fiddly as some of the pieces were small).

If the recut comes back easier to put together, I think these might be the coolest objective markers out there, especially if you have played space hulk

Adobe Illustrator. Because they all have to be cut as flat pieces of card, it is easier to think of them in terms of layers rather than as a 3d CAD model.

I've done another version of this kit - this one with a bit more teeth

I'd be really interested to see a chaos variant of the chimera triple pack.

Also is the shipping price really only £3.01 to the UK?

Thanks for the kind words guys

I have been a bit distracted with some other projects so the chaos version has fallen a little behind but I am hoping to have it finished this week some time.

And yes, postage is £3 per 300 grams (worldwide, not just to the UK) as these are shipped as letters rather than parcels (basically, if it is thin enough and light enough then it is a letter, not a parcel and the postage is waaaay cheaper).

I'll post a picture later today on what they look like "in the box" - it will make sense then

So to ship 1 kit is £3 and to ship 3 kits is also only £3. Add anything on to that and postage jumps up into the next 300g band and postage becomes £6.

Cheers
Neal

That's awesome. If you do manage to sort out a Chaos variant for the chimera pack I will definitely order at least one 3 pack to use as chimeras and to convert into griffons for my traitor guard army.

That's a handsome little vehicle, and I like what you're doing with the variants on it. Solid painting too!

thanks mate

Look.. at the moment the chaos one I am working on is not a kit... it is more of a modelling project. Milliput beastie in the engine and eyes growing out the walls, that sort of thing. I'll be gluing on some of these chaos glyphs that I have but up until now I have not actually considered doing a conversion kit like the one above. Thanks for the idea - I will play around with it.

What might be of more interest is this: currently you can build this as either the enclosed model or as an open topped one (the ork trukk below uses the open-topped version).

I am working on a way to also let it be built with a flat bed at the back. So if you wanted to ... oh, I don't know... mount a huge big cannon or a mortar on the back, you could.

Have you considered doing these in styrene sheet instead of card? Heavier, but a lot more durable...

Hi Tim

All the parts are laser cut and unfortunately you cannot cut sheet styrene with a laser. Well, you can but you get a ridge of beaded melted plastic on the cutting edge and it is not perfectly straight. It is fine for cutting big things like signage but for the little parts it is a pain. Also, as it cuts, it melts the plastic back a bit. You don't notice this on big pieces but it really stuffs things around with small pieces and makes getting the small pieces to align really difficult.

When I have time I will do a youtube video to show you how durable the card is. I gave an unpainted build to my 3 year old daughter to play with - to hit with a squash raquet, to throw and drop, and it passed with flying colours.

Oh ok, well let me know if you decide to make a Chaos conversion kit and if you make a flat bed variant.
If there was a pack that I could make into either a Griffon or Chimera easily I would almost certainly buy it, especially if it was possible to switch from one to the other.

I'm tempted to buy the triple chimera pack now, but if you do make an even better kit I don't want to miss out.

Just to say that this project is still ongoing.

The flatbed version is basically done but I got sidetracked doing the artillery pieces. I have posted these in a separate thread

These are amazing. What is the size comparison against a rhino?

Do you have plans on doing something along the lines of a repressor?

Either way these look great.
