At Adepticon 2011 my buddy Ted won "Best Army" for Battle Fleet Gothic. His theme was based around a rock that was Da Gof Rockerz tour barge. He made a small stage and some custom ork models as the band for a display base, and being a musician, he also wrote and recorded a song he had playing on an I-pod. On the way home, still stoked from his win, Ted says he has a great idea for the team tourny-we will build a 40K scale, Great Gargant for our display table. The theme being Ghazghkull commisioned four Mekaniaks (our army generals) to build Orkgasmatron, and at the end of construction, the Gof Rockers come and play a concert. He already made the band and recorded a song we can have playing, all we needed to do was make some ork armies and a Great Gargant display table. So of course I say " yah we can do that I'm in". We come up with two other friends that will do it with us and a month later we are looking at an 40K Epic Great Gargant.

The next step was to figure out what size to scale the orkgasmatron to. Sheet lumber in 2' X 4' sheets are the easiest to transport, so I decided to make the base of the Gargant 24", front to back. The corrisponding measurement on the epic model was 1.5". Dividing 24 by 1.5 gave me 16- meaning any measurements I take off the epic model I multiply by 16 to scale it up. Easy right? We also have to bevel the edges of the plywood so the side panels will have a good surface to attach to. Using the tool shown, I came up with roughly what we wanted the angles to be and used this to set the blade on the saw. I was also drawing out what the panels would be full-size, and we used this to adjust some angles and figure out some of the top measurements where all the angled panels meet.

Now that we have the measurements and angles we are going to use, we can make the base. If you look at the epic model, there is a skirt around the bottom that guards the feet-this will be attached at 90 degrees to the edge of the wood, but we want a bevel to attach the middle panels. To do this I glued and screwed two 3/4 inch sheets of plywood together leaving the bottom piece with a straight cut, and the top piece was beveled; then I cut two slots in the top piece to attach the vertical supports.

Useing the angles we had for the bottom plate, and the measurements we scaled up from the epic model, we are able to measure and cut the top plate and vertical supports. I cut grooves in the top plate just like the bottom, and we assembled the pieces with some wood glue and screws. Now we have the frame for the center belly section.

At this poin,t we started to cover the model with a base layer of masonite. For the back panel, I used a piece of plywood for added support, and because we had plans to mount a lot of stuff on the back when we started detailing. At this time I also built the base for the feet. The feet were made by glueing and nailing a 1/2" piece of plywood to both side of a 2' X 6'. The angles on the foot I just kind of eyeballed what I thought looked good and used a circular saw to cut them to shape. I'm sorry I don't have any in-process photos of just the feet, but you can see them in their bare wood form in this picture.

P.S. that is Joe in the background. He was the third member of our team.

Time to build the shoulder section. This was basically the same principal as making the center section, but with a lot more angles. I also wanted it to be very stable because the gun arms would be hanging from it, and I was pretty sure they would be heavy and unbalanced. Le'ts just say this section was a pain in the a** to build. You can see the main wing section extends out past the back of the model. To make sure it would be nice and stable, I used 3/4" plywood with a 2' X 4' support in front. While I was doing this, the rest of the guys were starting to skin the model with plasticard.

*Caveat on glueing plasticard to a large scale model: Liquid Nails sucks! It does not bond to the plasticard well, and when drying, it releases some kind of chemical that will warp and bubble thinner plasticard. Get out the wallet and buy lots of superglue. You won't regret it.

Now that we are getting into the meat of the project we assigned some areas: Ted is going to work on the head, I will make the weapon arms, and Joe will come up with a power plant on the back.

@ Fab, looked at your blog, that's some impressive stuff you have there, and yes it's a biggun'.

To give himself an idea of what he wanted, Ted did a rough sketch of the head. Based on this, we cut a piece of plywood for the base and glued on some insulation foam I had laying around from previous projects. Ted really wanted to have horns on the head so he started combing toy sites looking for plastic horns.

Ted smoothed out the foam and coated it with plasticard and made a wooden jaw that fit around the head. A few weeks after taking it home to work on, Ted called up and said he found some real cow horns online to use for the head. To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say, when he brought the head over for the next build session, the response was" bleep, bleep, bleep, those are bleeping awsome!" We continued to cover the main body in card and Ted decided he wanted teeth on the jaw instead of the boxy look he had in the drawing. We mocked that up and all agreed it would look cooler with the teeth.

At this point I have to give props to Ted's wife. They were at a dollar store and his wife holds up a back scratcher and says "look you can use this". Of course Ted says "I don't realy need a back scratcher". And she says "no not the scratcher this round piece on it can be Orkgasmatron's eye". That's were the Gaze of Mork came from.

Alright, so while Ted worked on the head, I started making the weapon arms. The Supa Blasta was made with a 2' X 6' block of wood that I nailed a 1/2" piece off plywood to. Then I attached another piece of wood that I cut angles on the ends of to off-set the gun. On either side of this piece, I put two wooden dowels and covered them with a section of pvc pipe and some metal casing I found in the plumbing section. I cut and mounted a round piece of plywood on top of these as kind of a turret mount. The barrels are made out of pvc. I mounted these by taking a stack of plastic washers the inside diameter of the pvc and screwing them to the block of wood. Then I slid the pvc over the washers and anchored them with some glue and a few screws. The pieces on the inside of the gun were a pvc join that I cut in half lengthwise on a scroll saw and screwed on. The Supa Lifta Dropa was done like a shiskabob. I drilled holes through the center of wood disks, blocks, a toilet plunger, parts of a septic pump and an elctrical box using a drill press. Then I slid them onto a wooden dowel and mounted them with glue. I also used the drill press to drill a hole top to bottom and we ran a 3/4" threaded rod through the guns to mount them to the body. In the pictures, you can see the jaw with its new teeth. Once the head was put on with the jaw, you can see it dosn't sit right-we would have to build that up later.

This is looking brilliant. One thing though I hope you've made the cow horns detachable as it'll save the need to paint them.

@Killy, yeah, me, Ted and Joe are old-school metal heads. You haven't been to a concert until you feel your insides vibrating in front of Lemmys amp-with bleeding ears, per my wife. I will be posting a link to the music and video so keep checking in.

Next up is to show what Joe did for the power plants on the back. When he saw the electric box I used on the back of the Lifta Droppa, he picked some up for the back. Then, he used a bunch of pvc and plastic tubing to make vent lines leading to a giant exhaust pipe. He added in some fans out of a PC and made some gliffs out of plasticard. It's hard to see in these pictures, but we tapered and roughed up the edges of all the plasticard and detail pieces with files. I will have better pictures to post when I get to the finished Orkgasmatron.

I just noticed that's me with a Suppa Dakka Blasta pointed at my chest!

At this point, we were starting to do the detail work. We cut 1/4" strips of plasticard and blocked out all the flat panels. Then we used various sizes of paper punches to punch holes in plasticard and glued them on for rivets. When we were discussing where to put the band, I suggested putting the drummer in the opening for the Belly Gun. Everyone liked the idea, so I made a gear-like platform out of plasticard for the drummer to go on. We also made a gear-like piece out of plywood for the head to go on. This helped bring the head up enough so the jaw wasn't hitting anymore. I also made the claws for the Lifta Dropa out of plywood. I beveled them on a scroll saw to give them an inside edge. Then I covered them in Apoxie Sculpt and gave some texture to the inside edges with some files.

At this point we were about six weeks away from Adepticon 2012. Ted had written 5 more songs, with him on guitar and his brother on drums and vocals; he and Joe produced a 6 song CD, "Da Gof Rockers Live From Da Boot". (Joe has a recording studio in his basement). I had designed a band logo and we had concert Tees made. Orkasmatron needed painting, and we all had painting left on our armies. The fourth member was painting all of our resin bases, and we needed to base our armies. We were getting together to work on things and decide who was going to do what, when I found out the bad news: our fourth member was going through some personal issues wehadn't known about. The bases were not done and his army was not painted. We would have to find a new team member to paint all the bases and assemble and paint another army. It just wasn't happening. To be honest, we were all kind of relieved. We wanted to go to Adepticon and win "Best Theme" and appearance. What we had was cool but not awsome, so our "how can we get this done?" meeting turned into, "what else can we do with another year to work on this stuff?" Ted wanted another album. I wanted a display table to put Orkasmatron on. We decided to make a mount to hang on the front like a Jumbotron screen above the band. We wanted to have a radio inside to play the albums on. Orkasmatron needed big shoulder guns. In addition, we all were thinking it, but till this point no one had said it: Orkgasmatron was too clean- it wasn't "orky" enough, We needed to add more guns, more junk and just a lot more awesome details, and now we had time to do it. Another whole year.

Alright, we went to Adepticon 2012: played some games, checked out the team tourny to see what we needed to beat and just took a few months off. Ted had a friend that said he would be are fourth team mate and he offered to make the shoulder guns- and then it was back to work. We all dug through are bits box's to find all the guns we could, and any other misc. bits. Ted and Joe also found some Pegasus model kits at the local game store. We added banks of flamers on the front of the skirt. Then we used some PVC to make pipes on the side. We added some random pieces of plasticard to look like patches, and all the guns we could find. You can also see the mount we made for the "Jumbotron" and we have the drum kit on the riser now.
