Subject: Up in the air 1:1200 - Steampunk skyships, pirates, et c - upd 27/9/13, Big ship and Porco Rosso
Hi to everybody
It is quite busy subforum and although I am a big fan of warhammer as all of you
blog here will be about something absolutelly different
Trully speaking when I started this project after so many years of standart mini worshiping I felt....refreshed. Hope you will be as well
I always admired skyships and guys from Catalyst games created a whole game "Leviathans" , box filled with such splendid ships, map with sea, village:
It brought a lot of old good memories, I bet you had, about some other great works filled with skyships such as Laputa-castle in the sky, Last Exile, Porco Rosso, Stardust. (I hope you heard about it)))
all these steam dragons, clushing Empires, flying pirates of course:
I dont like psudorealistic setting of Leviathans world- dont care about England, France alternative history. It will be fantasy steampunkish world tributing to above mentioned sources.
It will be actually altetred Warhammer universe - era of industrial revolution came after Dark Ages of Fantasy Battles A big dominating superpower - Republic versus dying magic, Kingdom of dwarves, Elves in reservation
What I will include:
-Small and Big skyships
-Evil Empire
-Flying Village of thunder traders
-Sky pirates!!!!
Part: Prologue
Here their standart ship:
What I like in their minis:
-they convertable -easy plastic to cut -very important thing
- glass stands
What I don't:
I hate boiles/pipes on the side - yep it looks scientific, but it is so unpractical - enemy will be hitting then, they look fragile
Relly on side skyship needs armour/heavy superarmour amd guns, many guns
I dont like design of the bottom -nondetailed, gives ship impression of casual sea ship levitated from ocean (maybe it is background). Imagine how many can be placed on bottom -again gunnnzzz, decks, radars et cetera
But again -deep respect to authors for actually existing models of flying ships
Part 1 Materials:
I already started exorcism of pipelines:
As working materials -I bought additional 1:1200 ships - Revell, MicroMax
So, will be updated very soon
If you have inspiring art, which can be put in what I am doing -please, share

[img]Near 50 looks, for severe WH40k forum, very well
lets continue after hard day of converting-
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So project #1 - sky dreadnought "Nymeria" - tilean federation border patrol ship
as I wrote -I dislike how sides and bottom made in original crousers ,so lets change:
Idea of something like this, side armor taken from russian tank BT:
So, with the help of greenstuff and polysterene:
I gonna use those guns..from Bismark I believe
Something like this for now
Project #2 - Village of lightening traders
Initially for base I glued severel lists of styrofoam:
several sets of small houses were bought:
need a lot of finishing:
That is it for now.
Again if you reently saw interesting art for steampunk/skyships -share )

Ask for interesting, here's a 28mm one being built on the forums.
Lots of pics with step by steps, lights, and skill out the wazoo.
Here's the link to most recent page.

Bottom of the ship as I said earlier -is quite large space to be abandoned - I will put additional decks and bombarding guns - as skyship is an ideal weapon to show height supremacy:
Side shield testing:
and finally -upper deck with return of command tower from original ship:
That is it for now, and I have feeling that half of the work is done )
Wow!!!! I was already waiting for you to come back! This ...is...awesome!
By the way, isn't it maybe an idea to get your hands on some bits from BFG and Dystopian Wars, turrets and such might come in handy and would add that extra level of detail the Leviathan kits seem to kinda lack.
Going to second the Dystopian Wars suggestion. Also Aoshima do several 1;700 weapons sets which may be worth looking out for.

Yep -dystopian wars -are cool for terrain in 1/1200 scale. I actually bought some
The only thing is irritating - how come in such small format they put such detailing -even frames or bricks

To the altered hull lets add some fire batteries :
Should give more armed and solid look )
3. SwarMa -sky pirates mothership or continous torture of the helicopter hull
"Landing mouth"
Cannon balls )
Hangar entrance

I wanted to get into Leviathans but the price plus the mail to Japan sadly put it out of my reach.
But I like what you are doing even if my heart says that you over-gunned the ship

A suggestion to make them less gun heavy would be to use single gun towers like destroyer size rather than double ones. That way it would fall closer to Miyazaki's flying designs.

Let's continue, this time with terrain:
I have an idea to make fluing city or at least village. Type and why this type of village can be flying -a big question -should it be some type of flying crystal (ala Laputa) or mechanic /physic based leviattion (ala Columbia)?
But for now I started from some big ship which spent almost 5 years on the shelf
If you'd make more of these pieces you'd have an excellent table to play on, sort of a ship graveyard if you will.
Will you also be including fighter craft?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Will you be building whole fleets and playing games with these?
As for the factions, note that there's also Cathay and Nippon. Whilst there isn't much official info on them, this might give you some other options as well. Maybe Cathay trade ships, the Nippon might have the largest warship in the warhammer world, that sort of thing.
You mentioned Elves, perhaps they would have some sort of wind powered airships, the sails kind of like the BFG Eldar ships or the Dark Eldar sails on their Ravagers or Tantalus. Which reminds me, can't help but think of the Cathay when seeing these designs...
As for the 'Evil Empire', does this mean a return of Chaos?
You mentioned a 'Spice Hulk', you know this means your next project is going to be a game of 'Spice Hulk' right? Some heavy armoured Spice Marines hunting down Skaven hiding in an abandoned hulk of an airship or something...
By the way, some more inspiration!
Dune - Atreides - I really love the space ship in the background, could be some sort of airship meant for nobility of the wealthy?

More inspiration!
Divinity, it's a web comic, kinda dieselpunk, with supernatural elements in it. Kinda inspiring for what you're doing.
