So I'm actually pretty excited about the new paints announced by GW! http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/wnt/blog.jsp?pid=11800064 Here's why (or, I don't know, why not): 1) Blood for the Blood God - I already have a good blood recipe that I like a lot (Tamiya gloss red and smoke combined with UHU glue) but I might still occasionally use this paint if it's good. It looks much simpler and so it will probably be really good for people without a good recipe already. Plus, you can't flick the UHU mixture for the splatter effect. 2) Typhus Corrosion - I don't have anything like this and think it will be a great addition. I like how it looks gritty without looking really thick, though over-using it looks to dampen details pretty heavily and makes the model just look like one color. Still, this looks easy for people who don't already have a "mud" recipe (like me). 3) Ryza Rust - I'll definitely be using this. Sometimes it's hard for me to get rust to look right with oranges, and it never looks really dry. Other than using pigments (which I'm just starting to get into) this looks like a great alternative. 4) Nihilakh Oxide - Another good addition that I'll probably be using. I know most people will just say "Just make a teal wash!" but I don't make my own washes. I think it looks really good on the Warp Lightning Cannon in the video, but less so on the example statue that he's painting. On that statue, it just looks like there's too much on the model. 5) Nurgle's Rot - Looks freakin sweet, kinda reminds me of my blood UHU mixture with Tamiya, only for slime. This comes just on the tail end of my experiment with creating glowing, bright, radioactive slime. I succeeded to my satisfaction on that, but this is a great alternative for a less bright version and I think I'll use it a lot. 6) Agrellan Earth - Wow, really cool! No idea how this paint does what it does, but I think I found a base for my red and black Tyranids. Looks like I'll have to play around with it a lot to find that "sweet spot" though. What do you guys think?

Ill be honest here, i dont usually rush out for new GW paints.
These however are a whole new thing.
If they work half aswell as in the vid then ill be happy.
I can see myself picking up 1 of each and having a tinker, then any that i find useful, ill start picking up in bulk.
More so the Agrellan earth since its perfect for my skink temple bases.
I think its safe to say that GW finally hit the mark with a supply type item.
Just hope this is the start of something new from GW.

Those look quite interesting. I can see getting some use out of BFTBG, a good liberal use for my new ogres, and the Agrellian Earth looks quite interesting, id like to play around with that one for sure.

I have used them and I have to say I am really impressed with them. Bftbg makes blood extremely easy. Typhus makes weathering on vehicles and walkers a breeze and looks ace.
I am using nurgles rot mixed with water effect for my swamp bases
Most impressive has to be the basing one though looks sweet in person but you have to get it right or else it sucks lol. But I arnt into desert bases soooooo

Now I am torn between using golden crackle paste for my split dry earth or this new one. Golden has much larger cracks, and less chance to fall off with those, but this has a nice effect too. GAH!

Just picked up the earth one since posting here last and had a few plays with it.
You want about a 2mm layer of it and it works ace!
It is very dry though, but hit it with a coat of watered down PVA and not only does it make it stronger, but it also seals it and stops crumbling.
This paint is a whole new level for GW and im now on the online store ordering 2 of each and 4 more earth ones.
These paints make some very effective touches to models very quick and simple, meaning that models can be boosted from TT quality to above that with little effort and still look great.
This is more of a simple method than a shortcut as it has the same final result, without looking rushed.

Think I'm definately going to pick up the typhus corrosion one tomorrow, just a little concerned how long a pot will last/what coverage it will give, especially on a IG armour heavy army... :-/

I've searched the whole of the GW website & I can't find either the GW 'newspaper TM' or the GW 'tissue paper TM' - can anyone tell me where it is & how much it costs please?
The only one I might get is the basing one as I can do the others with inks, pigments & varnish.
Plus if you look at rust then it usually shades the other way around - ie bright orange in the grooves where water collects & give the iron time to turn to iron oxide.
But it is nice to see GW trying to develop user-friendly wheathering products.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I can't seem to get the cracked earth paint to work.
I'll apply it and then it just dries and that's it.

You have to apply it quite thick on the base but not too much or the cracks will be to big and the stuff will fall off lol
Takes a few try's to do

Having trouble with the earth shade too, done a variety of thickness but never cracks! Will have one more go with a super thick layer but to be honest it seems pretty poo! Which is a game as I had lots of plans for this stuff

Someone told me today that the Agrellan Earth crackling effect works better over a super-smooth (even glossy) base coat of normal paint, as doing so prevents the Agrellan Earth 'clinging' to the surface underneath.
I'd try it myself, but my local store sold out :(

I was a little worried that the Agrellan Earth would flake off. What mixture of water and PVA are you using? 1-to-1?

Our local GW has posted that they received a faulty batch of Agrellan Earth that didn't crack as it dried.
No issues, offering an exchange, but if anyone else has issues, might be worth mentioning to your retailer.

There was a tutorial on another forum to do the same sort of thing with "Distress Crackle Medium" which is ~$10 for 120 ml and results in something like this. Similar result to the GW stuff but much cheaper so worth mentioning.

Yonan, mixing that crackle medium and the GW on a base may give some really unique results. The mix of large and fine cracks would be interesting.

iirc the stuff I linked has small cracks by default, but you mix PVA glue? or something to change the spacing of the cracks. So in the pic I linked, a small drop of glue was added to the center of the base, but none was on the outside hence the change in size.

Blood for the blood god is really good and looks fantastic on snow, i really need to get a stiff brush for better splatter though.
Nihilakh oxide is also very good, I shall stick some pictures up if I can get some good photos, I'm rubbish at macro.
