I have a bunch of spare space marines I want to turn into a fun little army. Roughly 1,000 points or so, nothing too fancy but I am crossed between Imperial Fists or Mentor Legion. Tactically the Mentors offer a flex for codex traits, while the Imperial Fists are strictly stuck to their traits. Being a Black Templar player, I have a lean toward the Imperial Fists but...The Mentors on the other hand have a great color scheme which I enjoy painting. So, what do you all think?

Both are real nice, but not enough Mentor Legion around.

By tactics, mentor legion. By paint scheme, imperial fists.

I really like your imperial fists paint job though.

Paint scheme wise I'd go for the Mentor legion, you've done a very nice paint job on it.

Thanks for the compliments! Still having a hard time choosing! This is not an easy decision at all.

Your painting on the imperial fist is better but the battle damage on the mentor is better

I would pick mentors though it would be something differnt

Mentors. I'm having trouble with marines in beacon-bright yellow (red-blue-orange...). Power armour or not, running around like a 3 meter large canary will get you killed on any battlefield.

Here are some more pictures, the Mentors in this batch are older, and the green doesn't match the newer model.

Both look really nice, but if you're having some trouble, why not do a split force? I.e; a combined strike force from both chapters.

They both look so nice that I can't decide. I play IF, so I'm trying not to let my bias show through. But yeah, I say go for a split force. Its a "combined operation" or something.

I am a fan of your mentor Legion models so I'd say do them, it's not an often seen force and would look cool across a few model squads!

I like the greener scheme even more than the black-white one.

The poll results are too close! As far as which one I would be happy with... I can't say! The good thing about Imperial Fists would be I could possibly build a HH army as well. But the Mentors allow for more creative freedoms....

Hmmm, I auto voted for IF on reflex. The Mentor sheme you have looks really good. So does the IF scheme you've got going. I guess it depends how much you are influenced by background. I know people who just move the models around the table and don't care, others really get into the background.

Mentors are known to not play nice if I recall the last blurb about them, which is weird, wince they should be mentoring other chapters or whatever. IF have a great history.

Either way the army will look great, nice work so far,.

Mentor's fluff seems to flip flop if we go off of Lexicanum and the current marine codex. I like how they are a test bed for new and ancient technology. They also deploy their Cadres and Elite Cadres with other imperial forces to gather combat information. But of course the long linage and history of the Imperial Fists is hard to beat.

Yeah, in the 5th edition Codex they are secretive or whatever, there is a brief two pager in the Compendium, showing Ran Thawll as the chapter master, who has authority to refuse testing of unstable equipment, but has never exercised that. Nothing really about the Chapter though.

The pieces of fluff they do have are rather interesting, but beyond that it is pretty open to anything.

Well I have decided I am going to do Mentor Legion. As much as I would like to do the Imperial Fists, I believe I would have a much better experience with Mentors. This was a tough choice and thanks everyone for helping me along! I will have some pics up soon!

The old Mentor fluff would definitely support a split force, squads of Mentors would fight alongside other forces to learn from them and report back to the chapter, you could easily do something like that if you still feel like you want to do Fists too. It'd be a pretty cool army, I think.

Looking forward to following this when you do that blog for the Mentors! :-) not often seen chapters are always a winner in my books and I love to see what everyone interprets the army as!
