X-wing has a lot of tokens and card board bits!
On the whole they are pretty OK.
But they are let down by the brown card board edge... yukky.


Lots of companies sell acrylic ones and they look pretty cool.

I recently attended a tournament and one of the attendees had some amazing looking tokens.
He had hand painted the edges with acrylic paints and they looked great, but he said it took him 4 Evenings to hand paint.
Eurrrgh!

I figured there had to be a easier way?
And then I saw these.


I bought the 4 colours that made the most sense. The pens were £4 each... quite expensive.
Black lime green, red and aqua blue!

Using Black

I got excited the asteroid edges looked great!

I then spent 4 hours painting token edges!
bloody boring... easy though.

Everything got two coats of paint.
With one coat of paint the colours were alright
But with two coats of paint the colour 'popped' much better..

Movement templates.
Two sets.
Green for the Empire
Red for the Rebels.


range rulers. double sided red green trouble...
They look good until you turn it over. oh well..


The little guys.
I picked out what seemed like a reasonable number of each.
20 focus
20 evade
15 stress
10 critical hit
10 ion
5 blue Target locks and the 5 matching Red target locks...


I think they look great!

That looks real sharp. I may do the same. Does the paint seem to seal the edges some from fraying?

Overall I'm pleased with the quality of templates, but I'm willing to paint them to increase durability.

I expect that it will help as the paint ink is a sticky and thicker than normal ink.
Time will tell.

Think I'm going to grab some paint pens next weekend. Anything to make the parts last longer. I have all the cards and minicards in protective sleeves as well.

The sharpie brand worked great, but I expect any paint pen will work.

The medium tips were perfect for everything except getting into the corners of the red target locks! (if you look close you can see unpainted bits)

I could only find the aqua pen in the fine size, but this turned out to be cool for the shape of the shield tokens and target locks!
Although I found the medium pens to flow better onto the card.

I recommend doing a few tokens up and deciding if you like the effect before doing the whole set.

Those do look much better, they really pop. I like the idea of using the templates from 2 core sets and edging them for each faction. I shall be stealing your idea sir! Thanks for the tip!

Would spraying them with matte varnish work? They sell a number of varnish products to protect paper.

The person who I copied the original idea from had painted his tokens with acrylic paints.
I only used the pens to save effort/time.

However it has now gone full circle!
(I also posted these photos on the facebook UK/IRL X-wing group and...)

i saw this and went out to find those pens but couldnt so i bought some other kind, it didnt turn out as well as yours but looks okay, Just alot darker.

Sorry to hear that.
Colouring in the edges is non destructive, and was worth a shot, you can always go over yours again later with paint from either a pen or pot.

I picked up those pens on Ebay...

I think because the cardboard is very dark it needs to be a kind of paint not an ink.
People have also used acrylic paints.

I painted mine up today. Along with marking my base plates and models. This way there is no confusion when cleaning up after the game.

Those pens can be found at art stores or arts and craft shops. N.Y. area would be Michaels, AI Freidman, and Joannes.

I went all acrylic with my tokens and templates but I will be taking a black Sharpie to the remaining cardboard pieces I still use in the game.

Ive used Citadel paints on mine and im very happy with the result, its just a bit laborious haha. Im gonna get myself one of those craft boxes tokens as you have. Mine all live in bags atm.

That Craftsmate thing is excellent also, currently just have loads of my tokens rolling around in the box, and then falling out through that gap in the front..

I used a black Sharpie to put some stripes on my asteroids when I played in my FLGS' Kessel Run back a year ago or whatever, but it was just to keep them from getting mixed up with the other player's stuff. This is too awesome though, man. I love it!

Today I painted my rebel dials brown.

First I painted the 'window' cut out.
To do this I slided a piece of normal paper between the dial halves to protect 'mask' the the maneuvers, and the painted the window edges.

After this was dry I removed the paper and painted all the way around the dial.

When it was dry prised the dial halves apart.

And this evening I got a game in.



After the game I set my ships up with a few tokens and took another couple of photos.
