Well, time for another P&M thread for me. You may remember some of my previous threads:

While the pics may not be linked correctly since those are all old threads, the pics are in my photobucket which has all the Warhound pics I'm about to show you as well. So there.

*************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

So anyway, I decided to attempt to chronicle my journey with this Warhound Titan. It has a rather storied past, being built and painted about 10 years ago. It was assembled decently enough, but it was painted in a very basic color scheme, and had some "additions" to it that were not quite professional quality. After that, it lived in a smoker's house for several years, absorbing plenty of second hand smoke to boot. The original owner and I made a deal as he was getting out of the hobby, and I acquired this titan. It sat in a box for several years as several of my esteemed colleagues didn't really play big megabattles (and then Apocalypse) so we never really had any reason to use it, plus it stunk pretty bad from all the smoke. Finally, my friend "Call Me Abbadon Maybe" (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/user/profile/72339.page) agreed to take on the herculean task of stripping and cleaning the mighty beast.

As of last weekend, it was finally returned to me "ready" for assembly, or as ready as it was going to get. My friend also magentized the arm weapons. The result is here:

The picture pretty much speaks for itself. Also, see the bag of broken/stripped pistons:

So after taking inventory of all the parts and checking everything over, I had a very elaborate scheme to have the titan striding over a large piece of rubble, so I went to the local GW store and picked up the "Honored Imperium" set with the giant marine statue and crushed aquila. I thought for sure that the Warhound would look really cool with one foot planted on the rubble in a triumphant pose. However, the titan's feet were already assembled, and the toes were posed and secured with some form of epoxy or cement. In their present configuration, there as no way to have the titan step on anything really without the waist either dipping forward to make the titan unbalanced, or back and have its head pointed towards the sky. I tried to remove the toes, but the resin was going to break before the cement bond with the amount of effort I was expending. So I resigned to just assemble the titan in a relatively neutral pose, it's stance in more of a plod than a trot or stomp. See the feet attached to the base:

So, basically, I have my work cut out to get this guy ready for Adepticon 2014.

Yea, this thing was really in rough shape. The resin also absorbed alot of second hand smoke as well, and it pretty much STUNK so bad you couldn't even stand to be in the same room with it. It required a long time airing out and then multiple baths in various stripping agents to get to the point you see in the pictures. This represents about the best I'm gonna get in terms of getting it stripped and cleaned.

Also, as you can see from the above pictures, the right leg is secured to the waist already, and no amount of pulling, solvent or anything can weaken that joint. That coupled with the positions of the toes basically have me "locked" into a pose when you put it all together. I spent an awful lot of time trying to change and I ended up having to give up and just go with what I had. That's also why the titan's base is bare rather than having something awesome its stepping on. There will still be some rubble on the base, but that will be added later.

So, the next big project was to attempt to magnetize the waist. I got the following magnets and epoxy for this task:

BYKES 10 Neodymium Super Strong Extremly Powerful Rare Earth Refrigerator Magnets 1/2 x 1/8 Inch Disc N48
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0084UASJQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

BYKES 10 Neodymium Super Strong Extremly Powerful Rare Earth Refrigerator Magnets 3/4 x 1/16 inch Disc N48
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A5TD6CA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Loctite 1405603 0.85-Ounce Plastic Syringe Epoxy Extra Time Gel
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MUM62C/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

So the first thing I needed to do was drill out the waist to accept the 1/2x1/8 inch magnet. Protip #1 here kids, having the correct tool is important. Unfortunately, I didn't have an actual 1/2" drill bit, so I just did my best gouging out a suitable sized hole with many smaller drill holes and hobby knife/file scraping. Unfortunately, this resulted in getting the hole alot deeper than the 1/8" height of the magnet.

Protip #2, think it through. So, I hadn't really thought about not having the right drill bit so I hadn't really considered that the hole I drilled wouldn't be the right size. So, I decided, "I have epoxy, I'll just fill the hole up with some epoxy and then put the magnet in and everything will work out great!" So, I mixed up some of the nice Loctite epoxy I linked above, and dribbled it into the hole in the waist. Then, I dropped the magnet right in, and gave myself a high five. Unfortunately, the epoxy was essentially liquid and the magnet sank right to the bottom, definitely not flush with the waist. After cursing and fishing the magnet off and getting epoxy all over everything, I waited a few more minutes for the epoxy to set up a little bit, and dropped the magnet in again. And fished it out again, and then waited a few minutes, and did it again, and again, and again, and again...and well you get the picture....

Protip #3, do it the right way once, or do it many many times wrong before it finally works or you give up. Eventually, after about an hour or so of waiting for epoxy to cure and cleaning it off a magnet, I got something that was...good enough, for lack of a better term. See picture:

As you can see, its not 100% flush, it's very messy, and its done. It was at this point that I slotted the waist into the torso hole, and realized another fun fact. The bottom of the socket in the torso is deeper than the peg from the waist, meaning that even if I put a magnet at the bottom, they wouldn't even touch when I put the waist in. Fortunately (/sarcasm) for me, I had already mounted one of the slimmer 1/16" tall magnets in the torso. See other picture.

At this point, I was pretty frustrated. Basically, not only did it look like my "expertly engineered" solution was not going to work, but also if I wanted to do it the "right way", I would have to chisel out alot of epoxy and magnet, and then refill the hole with either greenstuff or epoxy to the correct depth, and wait for it to cure before replacing the magnet.

I did, however, have a bright idea to superglue another 1/16" magnet to the one already in the torso, to get the two magnets closer to flush when installed, but still to no avail. The join would hold, kinda, but with the legs assembled on the base, I was worried that the magnets would not be strong enough to keep the torso secure during game play (or any type of even light handling really). Adding another 1/16" magnet was too much, and the waist peg did not slot into the torso enough. Here is another point where I could have scraped the magnets and epoxy out, and built up everything to make it flush and sunk the magnet in there, but I was tired of messing with it and I was getting frustrated with magnets.

I decided to just continue on, and if it wasn't good enough, to just glue the torso to the waist..... Stay tuned!

You guys are a riot.

Update time:

This is the right leg fitted into place. Note the coat hanger behind the titan. That's what I'm using to "pin" it. I drilled through the foot and the ball joint in the ankle. I also drilled through the left leg waist socket since the right leg is cemented in there. It's pretty darn sturdy that way actually, I was pretty surprised.

Here is the right leg attached and the shin armor just "resting" on the pegs to get an idea how it will look.

And, here's the whole thing together. Oddly enough, my magnet solution ended up working out "well-enough" to hold the torso in place on the legs and rotate freely. However, it is not strong enough to pick the whole model up by the torso. In game terms, its sturdy enough that you can move it around by the legs, and then it quickly comes apart at the waist/torso for easy storage.

Also, I'm holding the head on here in this picture, I haven't decided how to mount it yet. I'm trying to figure out a way so that the head can still move in its socket with a magnet.

So, a little more progress. I was able to sort out the pistons that I needed. Several of them were broke, and I decided not to bother with the ones on the front of the legs to the feet (since they would be covered by the shin armor anyway) and I completely did away with the ones on the upper legs, because they were really mangled and I don't think they add to the look all that much anyway.

So here are the legs with the pistons added, and primed Armypainter Uniform Grey! (The Gunmetal Armypainter Spray does not like resin for some reason...)

Now, as for the Gunmetal, here's a picture of the Head and one of the shin armor pieces sprayed with just straight gunmetal. I don't know if it comes through on the picture, but the gunmetal itself isn't very opaque at all unless you do many many many coats, and the resin seems to soak it up like a sponge anyway. I'll have to finish these with a brush but at least I learned I need to prime with another color first for big resin stuff. On plastic its fine.

And then, because everybody is ragin' about the Dreamforge Leviathan's right now, here's a size comparison with the smaller Leviathan, that I'm using as a Dreadknight.

Here are some updated pics of where the titan is now.

The whole thing was primed with Army Painter Uniform Grey, then with Army Painter Gunmetal. Next up is painting, probably starting with the arms. Also, I got high on paint fumes doing this.

I had an Armorcast Warhound that I sold a long time ago to get an Armorcast Reaver titan. I didn't realize the size disparity was that much, but they still look great when painted up like Ollie's.

You know, maybe it's just because we nerfed Destroyer weapons, but I felt that the inferno gun really did great work in our game. S7, AP3, ignore cover, Hellstorm template... seems dead good to me.

The mega bolter was a touch lackluster, but also lacked their prime targets (MEQs).

I think in a casual environment, Turbolasers with Strength D would be OP, while the other options work great, especially given the durability of a modern Superheavy.
