Mission: Bay Area Open Scenarios

Basically what this is is all 3 missions at the same time - Kill Points, Seize Ground (3 objectives) and Capture and Control. You have to win at least 2 of the mission objectives in order to win the game. This adds a whole new dimension to the game and while I have not played this before, I was interested in giving it a try.

Deployment: Dawn of War

Initiative: Chaos Space Marines

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Map of the terrain.

The large 40mm objective on the right is my Capture and Control objective. The smaller 28mm objective on the left is one of the Seize Ground objectives.

The larger, left objective is Frankie's C&C objective. The other 2 smaller objectives are the rest of the Seize Ground objectives.

Frankie deploys 1 DP and 1 unit of plague marines on the central objective to push me back away from the center of the board.

Doesn't matter as I don't deploy anything.

I also elect not to seize the initiative and we begin.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The report won't be out until tonight at the earliest as I have to edit and upload the photos and then write the report. So stay tuned....it's going to be a tough battle....

One correction: bao mission requires only that you win more victory co.ditikns than your opponent.

Chaos Space Marines 1

Chaos marines come in. His daemon prince (DP) in the middle falls back.

The rest of the oblits move in. Several units run.

Necrons 1

All but 1 unit of warriors come in. All my skimmers move flat-out.

Crypteks split up to join 2 different units. My army runs.

On the far right is 1 doom scythe and 1 unit of warriors.

Chaos Space Marines 2

Night-fight due to my Solar Pulse. Chaos marines go into a defensive position. Right rhinos pop smoke.

Oblits go after my right doom scythe.

Left rhino searchlights my doom scythe and obliterators blow it up despite cover.

BTW, that is Reecius' feet as he is taking a video from up high.

Right oblits fail to see my right doom scythe.

Nurgle: 1, Necrons: 0

Necrons 2

Necron movement. Spyders spawn scarabs. My 1 unit of warriors come in from reserves to claim my Capture & Control objective.

Right doom scythe gets a clear shot at his oblits nicely lined up.

Warriors advance and then run.

Wraiths get ready to multi-assault.

On my left, both command barges move flat-out over rhinos and wreck both of them. Wraiths get ready to assault.

Nurgle: 1, Necrons: 2

Spyders and scarabs run.

One of my lance-teks (crypteks with lance) blows up a rhino.

Nurgle: 1, Necrons: 3

On the right, doom scythes hit and wound all 3 oblits, but then my opponent would go on to pass 2 of 3 5++ invulns.

This would set the tone of the game for Frankie's saves. They were HOT !

Wraiths make it into assault.

Both of them. The middle unit multi-charges the plaguemarines and the rhino.

This combat goes poorly for my wraiths as the plaguemarines make every single save that they could make. I manage to rend 2 to death though and his power fist insta-gibs 1 wraith for a tie combat.

The other combat also goes poorly for my wraiths as well. I actually lose combat as I fail to penetrate his armor/FNP saves. I only rend 1 plaguemarine and he fists another wraith to death.

I also immobilize and stun his rhino in the multi-assault.

Chaos Space Marines 3

Oblits go after my last doom scythe.

Plaguemarines disembark. Oblits advance. Frankie is getting ready for a major counter-assault.

His other unit of plaguemarines goes to help out.

Then Frankie does a move that surprises me. He advances his 2 HQ's towards my scarabs. I thought he was going to send his DP's to help out with the wraiths but instead, he's going after the rest of my army with them.

Oblits fire 2 multi-meltas at my doom scythe. Though 1 missed, I am lucky to only lose my deathray gun.

I did offer for him to take away my TL-tesla destructor instead, but Frankie wasn't falling for that one.

Frankie again fires 2 oblit multi-meltas into my Overlord's command barge. He only glances it 1 time, but my cover fails to protect me. I am fortunate to only get stunned.

BTW, his DP's cast Warptime at the beginning of the turn. I don't expect my scarabs to survive this assault.

And indeed they didn't.

Nurgle: 2, Necrons: 3

Plaguemarines join in the fun.

I'm not sure if I even kill anything here. Frankie's saves were on and he kills 2 wraiths also.

This is going to hurt. This is just like the previous battle, only with 2 more obliterator power fists in the mix.

I actually roll very well here on my saves and only lose 1 wraith.

Necrons 3
I've got to stop his 2 daemon princes, and it doesn't look as if the wraiths would be able to do it.

It's up to my 2 lords. Anrakyr's barge moves 12" and he disembarks.

My other Overlord sweep attacks his oblits (moving 12") and then disembarks. I fail to hit his oblits!

Spyders and warriors move up.

Doom scythe moves behind terrain to get cover from his oblits and gets ready to unleash some tesla love on a DP.

The TL-tesla destructor actually takes off 2W from the yellow DP. Lance + rapid-fire from my warriors cause another 1W on him, bringing him down to just 1W left. Overlord then charges the HQ.

Anrakyr misses with his Tachyon Arrow against the other DP, but rapid-fire gauss puts 1W on the other DP. Spyders and Anrakyr then charges him.

Mindshackle fails to go off, but the Overlord's warscythe finishes the job and kills 1 DP.

Nurgle: 2, Necrons: 4

His other DP kills Anrakyr. In return, my spyders put 2W on the DP, reducing him down to 1W remaining. Chaos wins combat and my spyders take 1W to No Retreat. Anrakyr fails to get back up.

Nurgle: 3, Necrons: 4

Plaguemarines here wipe out the 2 wraiths.

Nurgle: 4, Necrons: 4

My goodness! It is a tie combat here as I make my saves (and so does Frankie).

Chaos Space Marines 4

Overview of the top of Turn 4.

Plaguemarines advance.

Oblits climb on top of the rhino wrecks.

His other oblits mobilize to contest the objective as well as get a better shot at my doom scythe. They both hit, but I make both of my cover saves.

And then he fires 2 oblits and 3 meltas from the plaguemarines into my Overlord. I fail my invulns and drop. I then fail my Ever-living test and my lord is gone just like that.

Nurgle: 5, Necrons: 4

His last unit of plagues decide not to fire at my command barge with meltas at point-blank. Instead they go to help out his wounded DP.

BTW, his DP casts Warptime at the beginning of the phase and rolls for his psychic test! He then makes 2 5++ saves in a row to live!!! If only he had failed, I would've had a chance....

My darn spyders fail to kill his last DP with just 1W left! He puts 3W on them with his DP and power fist. Fortunately, I pass my No Retreat saves. My spyders aren't going to hold out any longer.

1 wraith still lives!!!

Necrons 4

Overview of the bottom of Turn 4. Both command barges move flat-out and hide behind terrain. Left unit of warriors move away from his DP and out of LOS. The right unit moves into terrain.

Doom scythe moves back and try to get out of LOS of his oblits.

My shooting maybe kills 1 plague marine only.

Then it's off to assault. Even with warptime, his DP and plague marines only put 2W on my spyders, killing one, and I fail to kill his DP yet again. Even though my spyders are sucking in combat, I'm glad that they're still alive. Every little bit helps at this point.

Oh my goodness (Part II)! Not only did Frankie fail to kill my last wraith, but I actually win combat by 1! This may be huge.

Chaos Space Marines 5

The beginning of the end? Plague marines go after my troops.

His other oblits shoot down 3 warriors with twin-linked plasmas.

Fortunately, I pass morale and 2 warriors get back up. Needing 6's to assault, Frankie rolls a 5 for their assault move and fail.

Plaguemarines here shoot at my warriors. Only 1 wounds and I make my cover. He then assaults....

....kills 2....

....and sweeps the unit. Again, the cryptek fails to get back up.

Nurgle: 6, Necrons: 4

Daemon Prince wipes out the Spyders.

Nurgle: 7, Necrons: 4

Finally, his plaguemarines and oblit wipe out the last wraith. They consolidate towards the objectives.

Nurgle: 8, Necrons: 4

Necrons 5
My gas tank is running on empty. I've only got 3 units of warriors left and 3 fast skimmers.

Warriors shall know no fear. They advance towards certain oblivion.

Both command barges move flat-out to contest Frankie's Capture & Control objective.

My doom scythe goes to contest the center Seize Ground objective.

Rapid-fire gauss claim another daemon prince!

Nurgle: 8, Necrons: 5

As of right now, I have the Seize Ground objective.

I've also got my Capture & Control objective while his is contested by my command barges.

Frankie's got Kill Points.

If the game ends right now, I win. If we go on, I will probably get tabled.

We roll to see if the game continues and the result is a '2'. Game ends.

Wow! great game! A lot of sound decisions made by both players. It's refreshing to see a game where neither side made any mistakes. That being said, it is a game where dice rolling is involved and luck will ALWAYS be a factor in who wins(so it's not an excuse for victory or defeat, just accept that it's there), especially when both players don't make any mistakes.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
btw, BAO missions are just like the new Adepticon scenarios and I really like that win/loss style a lot more than the old first, second, and third objective getting battle points scenarios.

That Nurgle army really is the perfect counter to MTO Crons but that last turn luck shift made the day. Good game fellas, tight and action fiulled and a few crazy turn of events on each side.

Side note:

Yeah whoever says CSM isn't a competitive dex is stupid. You don't have to go all plague marines to make a good CSM army either, it has the widest variety of troops in the game and they are all good (with maybe the exception of Thousand sons).

Good battle report. It's always good to read battle reports where the outcome hangs on a single die roll. Frankie's list is the best I've seen so far against the New Necrons.

thank you, two good sirs, for another magnificent battle between two even more magnificent generals...
leaving the english accent aside, great game guys, it was nice to see a battle between two armies that couldnt be any more diferent and both led by the best generals. To be honest i was surprised by jy2 victory, one that proves that movility is one of the most inportant things in an army, and by the poor performance of the wraiths, who were key in the victory againt draigo wing.

it would be great if there was a rematch, but this time using GK...

Sabr, if you know how to run that Nurgle list, I'd like to try my hand vs it to see how my Necron list compares? (On a program that starts with a V) I donno if those games can count to gauge a list's effectiveness but I should start doing BRs. with the list, and the only real experience I have with it is proxies or that V program

I think that they are still competitive, but they do have a certain disadvantage against some of the newer codices, particularly the grey knights and DE. Honestly, the new GK's really made a lot of the other codices actually look old.

At least CSM can actually make fluffy lists that are actually quite good.

That's actually one of the reasons why the newer codices make the older ones look more outdated than they actually are. The new 'dexes are much more mobile than the older ones. Many people disregard mobility in their lists but I think mobility is just as important as shooting and assault.

It wasn't so much that my wraiths performed poorly, it was more because Frankie rolled really well on his saves. My strategy for the wraiths is to kill the less assaulty units and tarpit the more deadly units. The fact that 1 wraith squad tied up 3 units for so long equals success in my books. They were successful as a tarpit unit and that ended up giving me the win.

Zid wrote:great rep! those wraiths holding out (along with the spyders) won it I reckon... plus those covers on the scythe!

It would have been a more even match had Frankie not rolled as well as he did on his saves. Actually, if his dice had been more average, it would have been a whole different game IMO.

Oh cool, I read it that he couldn't make it down. World's a small place really. How did the game go? Our boy is a pretty handy painter and has been doing well in the LGS tournaments recently. Firstly with a Shrike list, then the GK purifiers.

The wraiths and scarbs give me no problems in the MTO list, but the command barges can be a problem if the dice are hot on cover saves, these little puppies can single handedly wreck my army.. With 1 lance I calculate a 6%/11%=17% chance of exploding or destroying the barge. This means I need to devote 6 lance shots for 1 barge. Add the second barge and its getting tight with the Doom Scythes which can also single handedly wreck 1/3 of my air fleet. It could be a close game.

That's because Matt Ward went way overboard with the GK codex. Every codex is bad against GKs even GKs, there's just no balance anywhere in that codex and honestly it's not fun to play against Draigo wing at all. Especially, like you said, when some of the older codexs like CSM and Orks which are still competetive against all the other codexs, have no chance (or little to no chance) of beating GKs.
