Wow, those are all wonderful. That Celtic knot shield pattern looks great next to the contrasting Viking/ Saxon patterns. Hmm...I may need a crash course on the origins of shield decor.

The Chaos Warrior looks superb too.

Thanks Dr H and JB.

I'm knot sure (knot sure...) when and where knot patterns came from, but I think there's evidence in the form of carved stone for post roman britain and the celts.

More skeletons are being assembled! Lots of oppertunity for some really gothic freehand shield designs. I was thinking of doing a skull with a red rose in its mouth, A skeleton holding a chalice of blood, and I'll need to come up with some more gothic white and red on black background ideas now. Maybe the gothic nu-metal band tee-shirts of the 90s will provide inspiration.

Ah according to gothic tee shirt design I could got for the grim reaper or a celtic cross with a snake wrapped round it.

Lovable little buddies!

- The knot ornament is a common element of art all around europe since the bronce ages. You find it on bronce age fibula as well as on late-antique dalmatian stone carvings, on irish dark age road crosses, on anglo-saxon sword hilts or in italian books. Late celtic ( = early medieval irish) art has a strong focus on enldess knots, though, while late germanic (=norse, mainly) art develops the variant of knot ornaments described as animal style wich in viking times dominates the norse art.
You could find a shield design like that easily on irish or britonic shields as well as on saxon, danish or merovingian ones.

So fully suitable for dwarves then.

Doing a little kitbash today, because you should always use up your bitz, and I found a suitable body, this old halberdier model had no head or arms so its a ligitimate rescue. He is now an empire foot knight, possibly a veteran reiksguard, dismounted no doubt to do battle in the dungeons beneath.

Skeletons for the horde. Unfortunatly ran out of coffin shields and they are like hens teeth.

Wolf riders. I neglected to strip the wolves as stripping plastic is a disaster area, they should look ok. Gave them all modern wolf rider shields but back to front and with the hanging bits cut off. I think they look a bit mongolian now.

Easter came early this year and I hate to waste packaging. I feel slightly childish making buildings out of easter egg boxes, but I collect toys so that argument is invalid.

Bad photo, but it was 5 in the morning. You can also see my mortar and pestle with which I increase my alchemy skills and curry....

Check out my tiles! This is easy to do if you plan ahead and use a ruler, I'm told.

Fittings:

Next up I need some kind of ridge tiles and a chimeny. Also its time to try sticking on the wooden frame.

Ah, shingling roofs. Takes me back. Mordheim bits too, I see. You've got a very nice start there. That style of building is always fun to make.

The chimney, will it be attached to a side, or in the middle of the roof?

It's having a side chimney I think. Actually it was a peek at your terrain blog that got me started on the idea.

Always a fan of those old Skeletons, I remember you got a crapton of them back in the day in 1 box.... with horsemen, and a Chariot... think it was for something crazy like £10 or something too.

Undead centaurs, anyone not make them?

I know I made a unit, including an armored wight to lead them (but later, from other kits). Lots off stuff you could do with those old plastic skeleton boxes though.

Models I just loved but won't ever get the Foot Reiksguard are definitely close to the top of my list.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Yeah I also could never justify paying that much per figure. Well maybe just one or two of them... This one is actualy made out of an old plastic halberdier body, a modern knightly order head, a militia sword arm and some green stuff: But he's pretty convincing as a reiksguard! Did you think he was a proper one? I'd be very pleased if you did.

Yes I'd better get on with that soon or it'll end up being a shelf of shame project along with the genestealer limo.

Those dwarves have been drinking fly agaric beer again I reckon.

My house is getting surface texture today. I'll go back and fill in the gaps later. The bottom part I might do in stone (milliput), the door is certainly getting a stone archway around it.

What I have learned is:

Apply PVA to both sides of the card or it will warp. And we all know how dangerous the warp is.

Make sure your house isn't slightly longer than your lollipop sticks. Whoops.

Tiny clamps (clothes pegs) would have been helpful.

Now to wait an age for this side to dry, so I can flip it over and do the back. I find photos in B&W help me see it as a house and not an easter egg box.

Well then this house is very authenticly medieval.

Hi Neil thanks. I wish I had the space to do a whole town full, with wall and castle.

I have built the chimney and arch and started on the masonary. At this point the bottom could still be half timber... not sure...

Aww thanks turaxa. He worked out suprisingly well considering the cheesy one pose halberdier he is based on. He looks proper.

The house needed a little lantern hook and lantern.

Great work on that Halberdier/Reiksgard rescue/renovation - both in the rebuild and also the paint. I've just started looking through your thread from the start as well - love the classic beakies and great to see them painted up with modern techniques as well. They look familiar though, so I think I may have been through at least part of your thread in the deep dark past, to please forgive me if I comment on old stuff that it turns out I already posted about. The Chocolate House is also coming along swimmingly, and I look forward to see what you do with the Skeleton Horde.

Nice progress. I say do the bottom half completely in stonework. Add some joists sticking out though, to look like supports for the upper story.

The chimney looks just right. And a lot easier to do it that way too.

Wondering what exactly a treat sized milk chocolate flake might be.

The warpage? Try using a 'drier' glue, like wood glue (aliphatic resin glue, not yellow PVA glue) and weights to hold things flat while they dry (if you don't already) Binder clips and bulldog clips make good clamps too.

They are 500+ year old buildings. Gravity takes its toll. They were straight when they were built-- or, I do recall reading that people drank very little water back then, just wine and beer instead, so maybe not.

Red harvest, whatever they were they were delicious and gone in seconds. Very flakey chocolate. Messy.

I concur about the stone work and the beam ends, it'll help me use up some stale old milliput and cut up kebab sticks that are kicking about.

I don't have any wood glue. Next time...

If I drank nothing but wine and beer I would never have been able to hold a brush let alone paint eyeballs. The invention of coffee must have been a boon to skilled crafts.

Thanks Azazelx, I'm sure I've seen your cute furry avatar around here before? Anyway enjoy. I think there is a lot of improvement to be seen if you look at the whole thing from start to finish.

I'm on holiday soon! Yay lots of time for painting and crafting. Also Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I realise computer games are a waste of life but damn are they pretty. Its the music that keeps sucking me back into oblivion.
