Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Whilst I was looking for a few chapters to build up my painting portfolio I came across these guys and thought the white and blue would be a good challenge.
Think I need to improve my highlighting techniques though.

Looks great. I love weathered marines. Marines Errant are a cool chapter.
I think you've done well, I would have a tough time with the split scheme. I think the highlights are good, the blue is fantastic.
Keep it up!

Thanks for that appreciate it. The half or quarter schemes are easier to do than I expected. The hard part is keeping clear lines of separation.
I like the blue here it looks deep but the white seems rough. Automatically Appended Next Post:

You mentioned this is for a painting portfolio.
It's hard to critique the paintjob right now - the photos are very dark indeed. Get some better photos up and folks will be able to pull your paintwork apart more easily (constructively of course).

On the first picture the grey line around the inside of the shoulderpad rim seems a little too well defined. More like a hard shadow then a blend/transition. But that’s me fishing for something to point out, overall the marine is great. Love the rich blue.
Of course, a suit of Mk. VI armor should have a rimless pad, but that’s just a pedantic nitpick. The fact that the rest of the marine is in a full suit, barring that one piece made it stand out. But that has nothing to do with the paint.
Well done!

Loads of layering, building up from a dark grey through to a white. Took ages. True he shouldn't have a rim...That got by passed mentally. Though I don't recall seeing a rimless pad in the tactical box. I could have filed it down.
Yeah it kinda does look like a hard shadow, I struggled to blend with the white...by far the hardest colour I have tried. I was thinking of doing a Star Phantom or White Scar, but now I ain't too keen.

Paintwork looks good. High end tabletop / competition squad finalist sort of level.
Photos still need bringing out; you should be able to get the backdrop to be stark white or close enough to it that the image can be cut and pasted (feathered selection) onto a plain white image. Ideally your lights should be diagonally front corners. This gives maximum exposure but minimises shadow. Use a curved back sheet (bend, don't fold, a piece of paper) rather than a straight backdrop. This eliminates the shadow at the bottom of the paper.
With the white, it's a little chalky - this is an artefact of the layering process. You may find that working from a midtone back to shade and up to white works more smoothly for you; you may also find that your choice of paint brand becomes critical (it's the pigment separation that tends to vary between ranges rather than colours) - I find the Vallejo Game white works OK with some glaze medium, along with Heavy bluegrey as the base, Wolf grey as the initial layer (use mixes to keep it smooth). The pot of ceramite white I tried was godawful, P3 or Andrea whites may be worth looking at too.
For really smooth white, you could airbrush (zenithal process) that before working the blue by hand (blue is very forgiving, really).

The new tac box does have one. I just put together a new sarge and heavy bolter marine to update one of my old RTB01 marine squads, so I’m a little closer to the issue then most. From a lore POV, marines mix-and-match marks of armor all the time, so it’s not a big deal.
I have have enough trouble with the white rims on the shoulders of my veterans. Doing whole (on in this case, half) a marine in a pure white seems madness to me. Deep respect for anyone who even attempts it, much get gets a result as good as you did.

cheers for the feedback, I appreciate it.
I'm looking at airbrushes in the future to improve my work. Automatically Appended Next Post: Nevelon wrote:Indy wrote:

You got a varnish on there yet? That can smooth things out a fair bit - especially the gloss for decals etc.

No varnish on there yet. Sounds like a solid plan though. Cheers.

My working plan for my own colourscheme is half white, half black, so I'm with you in appreciating the hassle haha
