That catapult looks great with the nose shields... I had that face bit on the front but I dropped it somewhere.

Everyone please note those harlequins are from like 4 years ago which is why everything is purple.

This chap is a toff. A cannon captain I think, but he would function well in role-play as a rich merchant/mugging victim.

Those are the first Orc plastics. I have a regiment of them in my Orc and Gobbo army. It needs a few more of them though. The new Orc plastics look odd in the same unit.

Yes, somehow, despite never having any money I've managed to collect a bit of every army. The empire is close to having a playable army, at least with the old rules... Skaven are close behind followed by orcs and goblins, undead and then chaos. I also have small groups of dwarves, dark, wood and high elves,, and somewhere there is a lizardman. Maybe I should get him out? Never painted a lizardman.

Still to paint:

Albion Giant
Hotpot catapult
A Lizardman
Eldar Dreadnaught and wraithknight (They intimidate me with their smooth elegance)
Some 90s orcs
Rogue trader space orks
More RT imperial guards
So many ancient paint lagged spac marines.

Next time I do marines they are are going to be dirty, I'm so bored of getting the perfect parade ground finish on them, even though the last marine I painted was like years ago. Actually dirty marines are not a bad idea. A pre-heresy nurgle chapter maybs. But wadamytalkinabout I should paint the stuff that's undercoated first (orcs n gobs).

Like the mugging victim my version of the model certainly got mugged by a chap with a hacksaw ended up with a beastman head the poor sod

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. I see him! One of your hellcannon crew. Poor chap. Still he can grow a more impressive beard as a beastman.

Well here in sunny Penzance its Mazey Day again and alcohol abuse is mandatory so I better go find somewhere to hide where my friends wont find me. Wish me and my liver luck.

Cheers Azaz

I've cranked out a beastman champion today. Ooooh so hung over from the weekend. I'm not sure but I think the neatness of my NMM suffered on this model. But I'm basically happy with him. If I ever come back to him I'll make his sword magical with lightning and shiz.

He is great, his sword is so massive and notched.

Did another mugging victim. He is carrying a suspicious package and appears unarmed. What cutpurse could resist this mark.

I bought them to be role play civilians, but they are of course a cannon crew:

Beastman dude is really nice - I enjoy him!

The cannon crew/victims are really well done too - I've always wondered why they were sculpted with odd trouser legs... Is it a statement of their unique fashion sense, or are the so skint (after constant muggings) that they have to stitch other peoples' discarded strides together?

Graven - I used to love Trapdoor! I'll consider the competition, but can't promise anything as work is busy in tourist season and the heat is killing me. Hands are a bit shaky.

Archroy - I reckon they were short on shorts. No I think the asymmetric trouser leg thing must have been a style sometime around the 15th century.

Weets, I love how all of your models use a muted palette that is so different from what I usually see on these models. It actually makes some of them more... 'realistic' than I am used to. I put that in quotes because it's hard to think of these models as realistic. But you do pretty well in that direction.

That cannon crew is fantastic. That beastman is fantastic. I would love to see your take on an Imperial Fist marine. I can see him now, in all his lovely pastel shades. lol

Well thanks vallhalla! Vallejo spoil me with their excellent model colour and washes of course.

Some WIP dwarves, went to town on the shields. There will be more tomorrow. If anyone has an idea for a norse dwarf shield design let me know.

Oh and its time for a bit of a rant. I've been reading about this 'Age of Sigmar' twaddle and I am angered, enraged etc. ROUND BASES! NO
And what is all this guff about bleedin sigmar marines! They'd make great conversion fodder for 40k but otherwise I hate them and want to melt them with fire/magnifying glass

Anyway its not like I've ever actually gone to a GW shop or played a competitive game, but I'd kinda absorbed the knowledge of it and now they change the names to look like typos! AAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh noooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Rant ends

Honestly, I'd easily imagine that Norsemen would use basic single-color shields with runes painted/carved into them. And as Dwarves have their rune-magic, I'd think they'd be using those on their shields extensively as well.

Something that's interesting about runes is that they were often 'put together' into symbols by having them share lines and repeating them in interesting geometric ways.

Those shields look great, Weety. Very nice freehand work on them! Good to see the WHFR dwarves out for a run and good to see some love given to them. I doubt I've got enough for even a small unit these days.

As for Norse shields, there's a shirtload of viking designs out there to use as inspiration. Combine those with the usual beardface elements and you'll be on mark. Quartered shields with runes - you've already done quartered with knotwork and it looks great.

As for the bases... you know you love round bases! They're one of the many things that I actually like about AoS. In fact, if they'd not taken a dump on the Old World and released it without any points, I'd be quite happy to see it as an entry-level game alongside WHFB, since the system seems to be quite decent from what I've read and watched on YouTube. Besides, the Sigmarines will make great Basileans for KoW or Custodes for 40k (which is it's own huge rules clusterfeth these days, anyway...)

I've read that Tomahawk will be putting out a Fantasy version of Saga at some stage. Could be very interesting, and perfect for small units of models like these guys.

Oh I like you work so I will accept that round bases are not intrinsically evil. But they will probably only put round bases in the boxes now! So I have to buy more. I put my pirates on round bases - as they would never form ranks. But I've always generally liked the regiment system. The whole thing has gotten less oldie worlde fantasy (as there is no longer and old world) and more tripping balls magical anything goes fantasy. Seems like a waste of 25 years of fluff. And what happened to the halflings in the end! I feel sorry for them the little blighters.

Anyway it really doesn't effect me so I play the part of amused observer.

I'm gona put a stick bird on one shield now - thanks for the inspire.

Also I have neglected runes. Some runes will be good.

Greetings graven - I have taken a look at the historical viking figures and been tempted. One day I will go for it and build a longship out of matchsticks to go with them.

Hey big H - you do a fine job . I specially like your camo marines. Very subtle and grimy.

Wow! Those dwarves (dwarfs?) are awesome - the shields are something else, especially the blue winged dragon on the teardrop shield - wish I could freehand like that. I don;t think you have anything to be worried about when it comes to banners!

Kudos to your rant btw... AoS is a Bad Thing, and the Sigmarines are just ridiculous... I'm painting the freebie from WD, and it's really not inspiring me 1 bit. It'll probably find its way onto eBay. I'll let you know when I list it if you like so you can bid on it and burn it!! Thanks Archroy. I should finish them at the weekend. The blue dragon (LOTR reference there) is my first go at a shield sized dragon. I'm chuffed with it.

I'm too cheap to burn a sigmarine, also the reeking fumes!
