I've been sitting over this emperor-damned thing for about 8 hours now. Touching up my touchups, trying to get everything together.
I'd consider myself a pretty average painter, but I aimed high with this one. It IS a unique feature to the army and an eye catcher, so I poured every little inch of my skill into it.
Yet, I can't find myself being close to satisfied, even at this stage. If anyone sees something I can do better, oh please do tell. Being not happy with a basecoat is a very bad start.
Or am I just obessing and being too harsh on myself, spending hours being bent over this piece of plastic with magnifieing glasses?
The is already red being washed and rebuild to get those lines out. I shudder of how it will look like when I apply my even poorer highlighting skills to it... :/

Edit: Well, either the thumbnail is alligned correctly or the pic itself. Pick your poison

Try to apply some washes to blend the colors, like agrax earthshade over the reds and the bone parts, and Nuln oil on the green parts. I think you have to shade it for it to look more natural and "waving".

Yep, you were right.
The washes straigthened out some really minor mistakes and added detail that pulls the eye away from those.
I feel stupid now obsessing over a basecoat that basically fixes itself.

Finished.
For a mediocre painter like I am, I think it turned out well enough.
I need to somehow work on my blending and highlighting and especially my handwriting, but eh...

If anyone has some critique to offer, I'm all ears!

That looks really good.

The freehand words on the banner are well done. The 'n' on Caliban looks a little squished but maybe that's just the glare on the picture.
The demon skull would really benefit from some white highlights too.

Other then that though, I think you've done a fine job on the banner.

That looks great to me.
Personally I'd probably hit it with some matte varnish, however, just to make it look more like cloth.

Thanks guys
I will likely go matt on it, redo the writing (it IS squished) and try and rehighlight the skull.

You should be proud of that banner. I'm planning on painting that next as my entry for a monthly painting challenge Paradigm runs on here.

Hope mine looks anywhere near as good. Have you thought about using pens for the writing?

Thank you!
I'm not deluding myself thinking I can enter ANY kind of competition (not that there are any nearby), but the outside perspective really helps. Oneself is one's worst critique

And.. I actually used a 0.2mm pen for the writing I need a girl to do that stuff for me. That actually might not be a bad idea... *looks to best friend*

If you want to enter a competition, on Friday we start a month long challenge to paint model(s) that need to be started and finished within the month. It's all on Dakka and everyone is very supportive and give constructive advice and feedback. I hadn't produced any miniatures for a very long time and then find this brainwave of Paradigm who is a Dakka member and May will be our third. The last two themes were "Space Marine" and "Veteran". May is "Fast and Furious", but the thread is not up yet. There is a link for the current challenge in my signature or the league table link will take you to the March challenge too. Take a look.
