I figure it's going to take me forever get this Space Hulk done, so though I might start a blog to track my lack of progress

I'll probably going with Space Wolves rather than Blood Angels. But I figured I'd paint up a BA to see how they look. So here's Brother Zael WIP. I've made heavy use of enamels to paint this guy. The basecoats were done with acrylics but the shading and paper/purity seals has been done with enamels.

EDIT: Genestealer WIP

EDIT: Another pic of Zael, almost done!

And here's the first of the Space Puppy Termies.

They both look good, I love the muted Yellow on the shoulder pad.

Will you be basing the Blood Angels and genstealers on regular bases? And any thoughts on the colour scheme for the genestealers?

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Regular 40k bases are unfortunately too big for Space Hulk (Space Hulk squares are 30mm). So I'm not sure, I think I'll just leave them on the bases they come with.

The Space Wolves I'll rebase on to Hulk style scenic bases that are ~30mm to fit on the Space Hulk squares.

As for the Genestealers, good question! I'm open to any suggestions. The standard scheme for Space Hulk is Hive Fleet Leviathan which I think suits the cold-dark feel of a Space Hulk.

BUT, I do have an existing Tyranid army of a couple of thousand points, so I could paint them to match the rest of my army. However I don't know if it has the right "feel" to it. So I'm open to thoughts and suggestions. I don't really play 40k any more so it's not a huge problem if they don't match the rest of my 'nids.

I haven't had any time to paint the past 2 weeks, but did some more work on Zael last night and today. Added pics to first post, by far the hardest thing to do so far has been painting his name and his eyes, my goodness I have a new found respect for the 'Eavy Metal team because try as I might I could not get it to look as good as the official 'Eavy Metal model.

He's almost done though, I think it's just the black to go, I was originally going to leave the gold but looking at it now I think it needs more contrast so I'll do some oil shading on it, then I need to decide whether or not I'll do edge highlights.

Allllmost done. Just need to do the left shoulder pad and that's pretty much it.

I was considering edge highlighting it, but I dunno, I kind of prefer the look without edge highlighting so maybe I'll just leave it. If I don't edge highlight I might slightly darken the shading on his helmet to add a bit more contrast.

Very very nice stuff! Though even time I see zael I can't help but imagine him as a stuttering team killer

I will admit.... they may have slightly factored in to why I painted him first I always imagine Sergeant Gideon saying "ZAAaaael"

I love your style. It looks... different, but I cant quite figure out what's different. HMPH.

Thanks! That's interesting though, I never thought I had a particularly different style, if you figure out why, let me know, lol.

For me, it's the super dark inking and the subtle highlighting that make your models seems so crisp and different.

Ahh, that makes sense. It's probably because I find shading easier to make look natural compared to highlighting. Every time I try and highlight a model I feel like I ruined it, so I've been moving away from that, lol.

I think it's just the excellent shading on the red. It brings the model out in a way that not even eavy metal did with the official painted ones. Keep it up!

I love him as is! I love the flat look as well. Great style and execution.

Thanks for the compliments! If people like them the way they are I'll just leave them.

When it comes to highlighting, I find edge highlighting is good for adding contrast but makes the models look unnatural, so I've always been conflicted on it. I think Forge World (typically) do really nice edge highlighting but I completely lack the artistic ability to pull it off They do really subtle highlights that somehow look more realistic

I might paint up a Genestealer prototype next and then go back to either the Space Wolf Termies or the BA Termies.

Here is a WIP of my first Stealer.

So far, I've painted this guy entirely with Humbrol enamels. I think maybe the skin could use a bit more contrast, but I've managed to achieve something I often strive for but rarely achieve, my own shading/highlighting actually works with natural lighting so that the shading reinforces natural lighting and vice versa instead of fighting against it. So I'm reasonably happy with that, though maybe my colour selection leaves a bit to be desired.

Just need to do some details, eyes, teeth, claws and it should be done.

I'm hoping the paint will be tough enough to survive without a varnish because the natural sheen of the paint is already exactly where I want it, if I varnish it I probably won't be able to get it back to the same level.

Ok, I'm probably never going to finish this Space Hulk set, but none the less, Brother Scipio is on his way...

I swapped to Tamiya paints and used Tamiya gloss varnish and it makes doing the shading a bit easier (honestly can't remember what gloss I used last time but it wasn't as tough as Tamiya's).

The shading was done with water based oils, so no smelly white spirit or anything like that, just thinned the oil down with a bit of water and a drop of Vallejo flow improver and then cleaned it up with a damp brush.

Scipio almost done. He needs a matte varnish and his left shoulder needs to be painted, both of those will be done as a batch when more of the Terminators are done.

There are a few things I butchered, I don't like the way the wings on his right shoulder came out and I butchered the text on his chest and power fist.
