Hi all, I used to play warhammer 40k (around 10 years ago now) and looking to get back into playing again. Used to run catachans but looking into the changes now (no marbo / just standard IG codex no catachan suppliment / rules) i might end up having a different army. any advice / tips / ways to save money (as I can see that the games workshop staff must go home to golden thrones) would be much appreciated.

Well, that is seriously open ended, but will thrash around to help anyway.

Look to see if you can get the 7th edition box set there and read a bit.
Get a feel for the new rules and the add-on books give an overview of the armies (other than a few new ones).
You could always peruse the GW site and research various models they display.
This should get you into it a bit.

Check out the local hobby shops, find out about 40k night and watch some games.
See if this crew are fun and some people you would like to game with.

Yes, 40k can be expensive.
There are a fair bit of armies out there to buy on the cheap and alternative miniature makers that integrate seamlessly with the GW models.
These guys could be exciting for customizing what you have:

Or here: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/warpath/corporation.html
Or here: http://puppetswar.eu/
Or here: http://maxmini.eu/miniatures/jungle-squad-miniatures
Or here: http://madrobotminiatures.com/zencart/
Or here: http://www.hfminis.co.uk/

Selecting an army.
Really is a choice of taste and how badly you want to win.
The game has really morphed into the original concept of the "Armageddon" concept of play.
Dusting off the IG - Catachan is still worthwhile and IG/AM is a great army to ally with other armies.
I would try to update that first and get a game or two in before you commit to a new army.

Good luck!

Hi Talizvar, many thanks for the reply. looking back on my origional post it is a little light on content. Imm hoping to use the old catachans i can get my hands on to make a new IG army, ive been messing around with an app called BattleScribe Roster editor and using that and my old knowledge ive made a 1500 point army list. However i really need to get down to my local games workshop on the weekend and buy the new rule book and the astra militarum (dont think ill get used to calling them that but nevermind) codex. ill post my list below any thoughts on it would again be much appreciated. p.s. thanks for the links

++ Astra Militarum: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) (1500pts) ++

[MOD EDIT - Individual points breakdowns are not allowed - please re-post your list without them. Thanks! - Alpharius]

Whoa! Okay, I actually followed all that.
The bones of it looks good, all those priests look like they need conscripts to lead...

Anyway, some long winded posts I had done on IG:
Anti-tank "advice" http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/649354.page#7850267
Advice on dealing with Orks: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/613385.page#7175288
Further thoughts... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/659929.page#8048788

So, enough with the canned response.
Now direct comments:

HQ:

Company command squad:
- Look at master of ordinance.

See if the new Tank Commanders or Pask do anything for you.

Any thoughts on a Primaris Psycher?

Troops:

You may want to get the Veterans to infiltrate and get some cloaks... flavorful for Catachan as well.

Fast Attack:

Hellhounds can be expensive, you can almost get full tanks for the price.

I am an advocate for the walkers with Plasma-cannons: 3 of them for 150.

Heavy:

Good solid choices there.

Ah, found another thread on a list: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/617018.page

Good luck!

Hi. Welcome to Dakka. I'll second the suggestion for a master of ordinance. Useful little fella. Rest of the list seems good

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Thanks again for the further advice Talizvar, have looked into the master of ordinance but the rules on his use (cant move and shoot, and the the 2d6 scatter)seems to me like ill be hitting a lot of terrain but at 20 points can see its use - i might try and slot him in. As for the Tank commander I've contemplated it but all its doing for me is opening up Heavy slots at the expense of losing orders for my infantry, I might have to try it out and see how i feel once I've played a few games.

The walkers with plasma cannons is a choice i hadn't even considered but at those points cant complain.

As for the Primaris Psycher i had considered him but my friend (and the person i will most often be playing) has just started collecting grey knights. Now the psychic phase is almost completely alien to me but i was guessing that facing that level and volume of psychers i wouldn't bother with him but again advice is welcome on that.

P.S. thanks and hi to War Kitten and Knightley

Whoa! Best not to post individual upgrade costs. It's the kind of thing that gets a site letters from Citadel's lawyers.

Posting:
Company Command Squad (223pts)
Carapace Armour, Krak Grenades for Veterans, Chimera, Powerfist for commander

That's cool. see how the total points is listed at the top and the upgrade choices are there, but the little point costs aren't?

That's very important from a legal perspective. Try to format army lists the way other posts do. The full listing like this is a no-no . You'll probably get a mod editing your post soon.

Otherwise, good luck with your army.

Yeah, sorry, but I had to delete your list becuase of that.

It is ok to post overall poitns, but not the individual breakdowns.

For example...

OK:

Space Marine Tac Squad (180 points)
10 marines
Meltabombs
1 Flamer
1 Missile Launcher

NOT OK:

Space Marine Tac Squad (180 points)
10 marines (150 points)
Meltabombs (15 points)
1 Flamer (5 points)
1 Missile Launcher (10 points)

Oh yes, also...

...welcome to Dakka Dakka!

Ah well, he has been blessed with a MODified list.

Ah yes, Redvoodoo, you might want to try a Vendetta: aircraft in the Fast Attack area with 3 twin linked lascannons is nothing to sneeze at.
Not as much of a deal as it was points-wise but can be helpful for antiaircraft or a tank / big critter killer in a pinch.

If you really like orders for your troops you might want to look at Creed.

Apologies for not following rules won't happen again - that would be my fault trying to be clever and downloading an app that writes an army list for me.
