So what was your first 40k game like?
I used loaned Tau against Blood Angels.

By turn 4 it had to be the saltiest game ever, simply because of XV8's

My first game as marines, I tabled the same guy T1 with Ultramarines, because all his deepstrikes went off the table, whereas I successfully dropped 3 cans of flamer on his ass with my Captain two-shotting his Captain with a Power Sword bc I gave him his own pod XD(back then it should have killed him in 1 round, but I don't own 4th rules anymore so IDK).

I think my first 40k experience was in 2002 or so. I saw a buds marines and got hooked. Went out and bought a box of catachans and went up against a friend.

We played the "same" points value. But what it ended up being was on a kitchen counter and it was 10 guardsmen vs vindicare assassin...

Needless to say it was a bit one sided, but I got hooked regardless

My first game was a long time ago ( 3th edition) I fielded a small but fully painted army of nmm necrons and a C'tan. The C'tan got insta killed by eldar snipers from the other side of the board because he was not immune to it like all the other necrons. I did not like it at all and it scared me back to playing wfb for years .

2nd edition, played an intro game from the boxed set at the time at my local GW (I think it was only using half the boxed set, so 10 marines, 10 orks and 20 goblins).

Though I had played WHFB before then. My first game of WHFB was at a mate's place, it was a very disjointed game because he didn't know the rules all that well either. It was again from the boxed set at the time, Bretonnians vs Lizardmen, I think it was a handful of saurus warriors against a few knights and a few archers

My army was obliterated in my first game but I played to the objectives and was able to win (even though I had virtually nothing left at the end and my opponent had most of his army).

It was his first game too but at least it was fun for both sides!

My technical first game was an in-store demo during 2nd edition; Orks vs Space Marines. I wanted to play with the Space Marines, but the store owner said to use the Orks. I lost, because a lot of complicated stuff I didn't understand was happening. Unsurprisingly, I didn't start playing.

My first "real" game was back in 1998. A friend got Orks and showed me the game's rulebook. I loved the look! I picked Tyranids, because they were the most alien-like. Starcraft was just released, and I also really liked the Zerg, so I was going to make these bugs work! I purchased a Hive Tyrant, a box of Genestealers, and a box of Termagants. My first game I lost to a Nob with a power first crunching the Hive Tyrant.

Our games grew as time went on, with bigger armies and more impressive splats! My friend no longer plays, but it's a hobby I think will stay with me always.

Orks vs Wolves in 6th ed with my friend started 40k at the same time as me. So many foot slogging infantry on both sides. Neither one of us had any real idea what the heck we where doing (thank Gork for the quick reference sheet). Had fun but it was basically fight to the death with two grey armies on a barren wasteland of a battlefield (it was white carpet so snow?)

I played my first game at a friend's house back in late 5th edition. I played my friend's space marines and he played his brother's tyranids. Iirc my list consisted of a captain, 5 scouts in a rhino, a squad of assault marines, a tactical squad and a dreadnought. The only part of the game that I really remember was during his first turn. I had gone first, and killed a bunch of his little guys (guants?) and I was completely terrified after he spawned 14 more during his turn. I think I almost conceded at that point! I ended up nearly tabling him (he kindly tailored my list so that I virtually couldn't lose). I think what hooked me was the battlefield and the (mostly) painted armies.

1987 - My space Orks against my friends silver skulls.

There are only three things I remember of that game:
1. Space marines back then were godly
2. I had one Orks with a plasma cannon who did very well for himself
3. Vortex grenades, hate is not a strong enough word. And everyone had them.

Too old to remember much else.

It was earlier this year, I played a 1000pt Tau vs Tau game against a really helpful dude at the games club I go to. He helped me loads and showed me what to do and I won! I had some stealth suits, a load of fire warriors, some pathfinders, a broadside and a hammerhead. I know he had Shadowsun but other than that I can't remember his force.

I used to collect 40k way back in the early to mid 90's, I played a half arse game against my sister user the marines and orks from the 2nd edition box. We were both young, had no idea what we were doing so I think we only played a turn or two. I was more into the collecting and painting than the playing so I don't really count any from back then.

For the greater good...

Space wolves vs Orks at 1500, using my new AOBR marines plus my dad's old small marine collection. Had an absolute blast-Ragnar blackmane carved single handedly through a dozen ork boyz then got rocked by a single Rokkit launcha from a Trukk. My powerfist sarge beat his Deff dread to a pulp over 3 rounds, until it finally carved through the last of the marines, leaving it immobilized with one arm on an objective (5th ed so no hp). It later got cracked by my 100% efficient Long fang team with 1 MM, 1 Plasma, 1 Las, 1 HB, and 1 ML.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

We had an old metal SM Dread battling the Ork cardboard cut out. The Ork cutout got missile launchered to death. Game over since the Orks at that point had no way to wound the SM one

My necrons against my buds Orks back in 6th edition. Got a ton of rules wrong (on my part), such as Wraiths not being instagibbed by Power Klaws, but overall it was pretty fun. Ended up with my Deathmarks kiting around his Warboss and 2 Nobs across the board. Everything else was dead.

The Last Chancer Who Survived

My first game was in my first year of secondary school, and I cannot believe how much of this I remember, given that this was in 2007, and was about half an hour of my life.

I'd been dragged into a technology classroom whereupon I was introduced by my friend to Warhmmer 40k. I was given an overview of the game by the tech teacher (an angry Scottish man), who then got one of the other students to teach me the game.

This person had a bunch of AOBR ultramarines, and rather reluctantly gave me a small squad vs dreadnought punchup, in which I learned to never get into CC with walkers.

After that was several months of being largely rejected by everyone in the school and that warhammer club.

At some point after that, I got the AOBR set at the behest of another friend, and we had some marine vs marine shootouts. Fun times.

This, btw, is how I learned to hate ultramarines. All three marine armies (mine, the friend's and the tutorial game) were ultras. Fething blue.

First game of 40k was in 1998 I do believe. My Speed Freak Orks vs Space Marines. I don't recall precisely what happened, but I do remember a battle latter that year or in 99 when my Orks were pitted against Chaos Space Marines. It was the battle of deathstars, my Mega Armor Nobz, Warboss and Mek vs my friend's Beserker Bikers (back when that was a thing). He destroyed literally everything in my army, except my Nobz who proceeded to march through his back lines over running unit after unit in glorious slaughter. I don't recall who won, but much blood was spilt.

Active armies, still collecting and painting First and greatest love - Orks, Orks, and more Orks largest pile of shame, so many tanks unassembled most complete and painted beautiful models, couldn't resist the swarm will consume all
Armies in disrepair: nothing new since 5th edition oh how I want to revive, but mostly old fantasy demons and some glorious Soul Grinders in need of love

6th edition was just released or about to be. I just put together my first Army of Grey Knights. I started off with them because the Low Model Count which meant less i had to spend on an army.

I was pretty pumped I had about 80% of everything painted up.

Went on the forum at out FLGS and asked for a game and explained this would be my first game and was looking for a learning experience. I wound up finding a first match against a guy and his Space Wolves.

He utterlly destroyed me. Then he decreed loudly to the entire store how he just beat Grey Knights in a triumphant manner.

It was pretty demoralizing.

500pt game at the tail end of 4th, I played demons against my friend's necrons. He barely won, but I was hooked. Played all through 5th, until the abomination that was 6th shelved my armies. 7th made me sell them.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
