Well, didn't plan on buying this issue, but that article is a big plus. Let's see what else is in it and I might change my mind.

I think this is the first White dwarf article I've ever considered buying. I've always had trouble with faces and that would be very handy to have

Awesome, I was really hoping these articles would make a comeback! Looks very much like the old format which bodes well.

Y'know, that explains why doing Base->Layer I have never really been able to duplicate their Guard flesh tones for the studio models 100%...

Because they do it Layer->Base, while the guides are always Base->Layer.

Huh. Neat!

I doubt the studio painters follow this, or any other hobbyist-level guides.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I've been kinda worried to start my Guilliman because I wanted to make sure the face was painted really well - I think the timing of this article is pretty great!

There used to be an article about painting faces on the old GW site many years ago which started similiar to this. It was the first article I remember that really talked about a blue wash for the lower eyelid and red for the lips, a simple tip which helped me a great deal back then. If this does the same for other painters it'd be ace.

PS: If anyone still has a copy of the old article, sharing it would be great.

I do remember something about an article for faces in the past

I just hope this helps do the eyes. My guys always end up looking like the googly eyed monster. I just leave them white for now.

Oh, and what do they do then? Mist the paint on in perfect layers using their fine telekinesis, honed by years of eating boiled rice one grain at a time with no hands?

no he is correct, almost every "eavy metal" guide ive seen misses steps from its "how to", the better at painting I got over the years the more I realised this.

so to say that they likely don't follow there own guides, is probably true.

Heh. I wonder if the Eavy Metal article mentions their biggest timesaving tip. Only paint the parts the camera will see

Nice to see the return of some more advanced painting tips though. It looks really useful so far

I always got a laugh out of their old 3 step “guides”

Step 1 - Primed
Step 2 - Colors blocked in
Step 3 - Golden Demon!

Not that there isn’t a lot of useful info to be gleaned out of them, but you need to acquire a lot of techniques they don’t go into details for to get their results.

The article looks great. Trying Doombull brown mixed Abaddon Black in the recesses already seems like a good technique to try out. That's all the article needs to do; provide a new technique to try.

For a true Eavy Metal masterclass, Darren Latham's (head judge at Golden Demon) blog has a great guide:

They're bagged, so no newsagent-library action alas.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. The painted examples for Betrayal at Calth were actually really damned good with some genuine blending going on in places. A lot of stuff very clearly gets nothing more than the base, shade, layer, highlight treatment. When I first flipped through my most ecent BA codex I was actually slightly horrified at how poor a lot of the models were when you gave them more than a cursory glance.

I look forward to seeing this because I avoid painting human faces to the extent I never model a power armoured guy without a helmet. Human sized daemons/monster/tyranid type infantry is fine because teeth, big tongues and eyes without pupils are so much easier to paint than human faces which I find so, so easy to get wrong

TBF if they went through the entire painting process it would likely be a very tedious read and include layers of information most people wouldn't be interested in. Watering it down to just the highlights makes for a better article I think.

There are two of them, pretty easily found. I won't repost them, but Google is your friend. The articles were painting faces masterclass and painting faces redux.

Yeah if you're thinking about buying this WD because of the painting faces, just google to find the older articles. GW had them freely available on their website before it was updated.

They used to have a lot of LOTR masterclass articles that I wish I could get again, they were really good for learning how to make your models look a bit more realistic and gritty.

That's an excellent idea for a tutorial and I applaud them for doing it. I won't use it because I don't believe in non-helmeted people in the 40k setting but it might help if I ever get into Daemons for any reason!

It looks like the style of brush that is included in the getting started paint sets (https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Build-Paint-Set-ENG)

Because the magazine is a reboot as with the article, this means we have to go through all the run of the mill how to paint articles that have been done in the not so distant past.

Hope this doesn't take away from Duncan
