Knowing the size of a single deplyment of Imperial Guard, I was wondering how the hell they shuttled their troops from the ships above to the planet below? I was going to model up some sort of lander, but realized I have no clue how its done. I had planned to make a couple, and host a small game at my house where the enemy has ambushed a landing party of Guardsmen. The outcome would determine the rest of the campeign. I had thought maybe something similar tothe Arvus freighter on Forgeworld, or maybe something like the lander in the Starship Troopers movie?

Another way would be to simply slide the landraider sideways like a big slowed hovercraft full of eels. -pismakron

I believe convential Guard are landed via large troopships. More specialized regiments (light infantry, spec forces, etc.) are deployed via dropship (it's in the Eisenhorn trilogy), and Drop Troop Guard regiments use Valkyries, grav-chutes, and droppods.

There's a sketch of a troopship that someone did for a Dawn Of War mod. I found it via Google image search but can't seem to remember what I entered to get it. Basically, it was just a smaller version of the Battlefleet Gothic Capital ships (large curved prow, exposed superstructure, etc.).

We use these for armor transports.  Troop versions would have enclosed areas.

That picture confuses me for some reason...

It's only the front/under part where the transported units are. I can email better, fuller picture if you'd need. Just none uploaded on dakka.

I don't like the Republic Gunship as a troop lander. It doesn't really fit into the whole Gothic feel of the Imperium, more like the Tau. But it's still a cool idea.

There is a picture of one on the cover of Codex: Guard, its basiclly a box with engines and ramps. The Guants ghosts and Souldrinker books also talk about them. Pretty much the same thing though they come in various sizes, platoon, squad, company...
