So had a quick crack at doing more noble-dark BAngels, trying to revitalise my Primaris Angels with a gothic technique. What do you guys think? Anything I can do to improve it?

I like that and I’m planning on going for a darker red colour scheme for my BA when I start them this month. What reds did you use for this? It looks more like what I’d imagine a real BA would look like.

I want some splashes of colour and was thinking of having a bone coloured shoulder pad for primaris and a classic scheme for firstborn. The sea of orangy-red that I remember from older editions is too cheerful for me!

Thanks guys

For the red I undercoated the model in black, then I started a cheap man’s airbrush-esk gradient by Dry brushing Word Bearer’s red on all the plates broadly, then Mephiston as the next gradient stage, focused more on the upper parts, then I painted on the centre of the gradients with Mephiston just to get it solid in some areas as the dry brushing can look a bit rough. Then I highlighted with Evil Suns, then an extreme of Fire Dragon Bright.

The dry brushing is effective, it doesn’t have that chalky look that you’re always in danger of. Well, I am anyway!

Very effective work, I've always liked dark reds for Blood Angels, and the iconography you've added have brought them back to what I "expect" a marine to look like.

Nice work on the drybrushing too, I didn't cop that it was drybrushing at all!

I much prefer dark and grimy paint jobs like this. The setting is grim dark and a lot of the paint schemes (especially those shown by GW) are too bright and clean. Great work.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I'm curious what you will do for the bases. That will influence the grimness of the overall look.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Thanks everyone. I agree, darker and grittier looks very cool on 40K models.

I’m not sure on the bases just yet, I was going to do mud but with the rich red I have plenty of warm colour haha. So I was thinking maybe cold rubble with some dust up his feet.

So I did a base, based on the Blackstone fortress bases Duncan did a while ago. Not 100% sold in it just yet, he looks sort of seperate to it in a way.

What do you guys think?

Big fan of BSF bases, they're a pain in the ass to paint by hand but you've done a bang up job on it!

Thanks a lot

As a quick update I just chucked a dark blue around the rim just to make it look a little more finished and that helps a lot for me.

Now to finish the squad.
