I’m a big fan of green stuff world and so I trust their new products and rarely am I disappointed. So I find this quite exciting but at the same time it feels like it’s too big a claim to be real. Any thoughts? Their face book page is even more boastful about this mystery range

I mean that's basically the same kind of marketing any new paint line would get. Even if its a bog standard line that's just a slightly different formula.

Heck sometimes you get new paint lines in miniature painting that are just mixes of colours because people want specific repeat colours instead of mixing on their pallet.

So for someone who only uses out of the bottle its a revolution; for someone who mixes its "eh its ok".

I do think we are seeing a lot more innovation in painting in the last few years so it could be something really neat

Yeah I think it will be a more expensive range of paint to compete with pro acryl or something like that, super pigments or something.

Or maybe a range of oil washes

Half of GSW's products are blatant ripoffs of companies that lack the resources to sue them for it, so I'm not holding my breath for anything novel.

Give them enough time, they’ll end up with it on the desk.

Also surprising is… where in the hell is the obvious Critters reboot!

I’ve heard this a bunch of times but I’ve never seen anyone be specific about which products they have done this with. Any examples?

There was a kick up of fuss a while back with the idea of terrain/base rollers.
My memory on it is hazy but GSW tried to claim copyright on the idea or such and it didn't work out

TBf might not be the coolest thing to do but it’s not stopped anyone buying GW stuff. It’s also the way pretty much all businesses work, unfortunately. Tesla had most of his ideas stolen.

And to GSW credit, the thing they have done is found a way to market to me. Anyone else making the things they make haven’t gone to the same effort to reach new customers and that’s all part of market competition

Just like when GW watered down their paint and called it "Contrast Paint" TM.

Here's a general overview. Basically they abuse weak EU IP law on 'design patents' to lay legal claim to products they did not originate, and since the law requires their victim to challenge them in court in Alicante, Spain, they usually get away with it. The specific examples given there are the green stuff rollers and shaped punches, but there have been others I can dig up.

Besides products, they also have a history of generally scummy things like trademarking colorshift (when they weren't the first to use the term) and stealing photos.

Personally I'm not keen to make excuses for a company that uses exploitative legal action to prevent small businesses from selling their own products, but you do you.

Well it’s not great but it’s the economy that we’ve built in western countries. I’m typing this on an iPhone and apple have done worse things. Best not think about where your clothes come from

That's quite a bad stance to take on the issue. It's by facing facts and acknowledging these issues that cause changes to be made.
It's clear from your posting history that you are a fan of GSW. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, nor with liking their products. But do yourself a favour and don't make naive excuses for their gakky business practices.

I mean the economic system we live under encourages exploitation, especially in creative industries. Singling out one business for less-than-savoury practices does feel a little like missing the forest for the trees. Companies grow, and as they do they grow to exploit. Some are badly run, so are unsubtle about it (GSW...). Some do it more slyly, so get away with it mostly in the public eye. Ultimately the problem doesn't lie with individual decisions made by individual people or companies, but with an economic system that actively encourages exploitation. If you are going to make a critique about the practice of large businesses, it has to be a systemic one to be valid.

Either way, not a defence of GSW. Seems to be a pretty ugly company by all accounts, but they've got a range of products under one roof that no other company has, and some unique and interesting things for sale.

Speaking of which: Chrome paints. Their airbrush silver is incredible, the gold tones need work. A airbrush-ready gold chrome would be enough of a revolution to reel me in

I used to be very vocal about the ethics of consumerism and realised that every time I took a position on one company I was buying from another that made me a hypocrite. I’d happily support any government that was going to bring in rules to sort out the exploitation and corruption but the whole idea of voting with your feet is as misleading as trickle down economics. The decade that I didn’t buy from Amazon because of their tax avoidance made zero impact on anything.

As far as their chrome paints go I love them, I used a bit of their gold colours and thought they were great, what don’t you like about their gold tones? I have the black chrome on order

Couldn't agree more with this! All gets a bit depressing though...

The Gold chrome paints are excellent golds, but not chrome in the way that I need them to be. Their airbrush silver chrome is a true mirror finish, which is what I am after, the gold doesn't airbrush in the same way unfortunately.

Have you applied the gold with a brush as opposed to an airbrush? I applied it by brush (only tried on a small space) and I thought the reflection was great. I’ll have to try again and take a picture. I thought the brush on versions were supposed to be superior but the airbrush version is great aswell, I’m using it on my custom chapter

Yeah, underwhelming but will be interesting to try the new formula at some point.
