Welcome all to the 124th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: Slow & Steady - Shambling hordes, lumbering vehicles, tortoises winning against Hares. Slow and inexorable. Or perhaps the subject looks like they are taking it easy, and are living life in the slow lane. You might not be first across the line, but will get there.

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of June and will end at midnight EST on June 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Mostly, on my phone.

OK, a choice of two things, both very fitting

Wargames Atlantic villagers. They bumble around and get in the way in any game, but particularly for London 1(666) where they are hopeless at escaping from the
And metal 2nd ed ogres that I've not touched for 30 years... that's Slow and Steady, right? Plus, of course, they are Slow (if not steady) on the field... and next month the Gnoblars are perfect for Sidekick! I mean I don't OWN any but there's time, right?

Terminators. Classic choice for 'Slow & Steady'. Once these are done, I'll have a completed combat patrol to play with, so I need to get these done.

I'll build and paint these Tomahawk Destroids for Robotech RPG Tactics. They're kinda like walking main battle tanks, so I think they qualify as "slow and steady."

I skipped May because I was busy painting Dwarfs and didn’t think any of them would come to help if you asked them.

Not to worry though, slow and steady, shambling you say? Behold!

They can’t march but they can shoot even if they shamble so they’ll get within range and continue to shamble on forward if only to stay within 12” of the thing that keeps them coming back to life.

After a quick rummage I've come up with a few options - black orc big boss, some dwarf heroes, or a mole blacksmith. Though tempted to rummage further and dig out some Tomb Kings now I've seen what theCrowe is doing

I might have to get in on that action too since I myself have Tomb Kings. Still thinking about it though.

If a squad of terminators suits the theme, surely a single dreadnought will be permissible as well? If so, I would like this Word Bearer in spe to be my first entry to this series of threads.

For my Apri... Ma... Huh? What do you mean it's June already?
Time goes by so fast.

Well, trying to get a piece done as I have a project that might fit the theme and even MIGHT get it finished during the month.

Taking part to Gregor Pilarski's weathering workshop, so I had to build a walker for it. I chose the Chaos Wardog. Fitting to the theme.

Not sure you've ever seen this little known fellow. I'm told he isn't one to rush things, so he should fit the theme nicely.

That's Jeff Vader!

Still a lot of work to do, but since I was up to 5am anyway watching the French Open final (public holiday on the Monday thankfully), I powered on through all the check patterns the RTB9 look demands:

I haven't worked out what I'm going to do for next month, but whatever it is it's NOT going to involve check patterns.

We know next month’s topic is “sidekick” due to the tie for this month’s topic if that helps you plan.

I'll enter this scuttling thing:

This is a 3D printed Tomb Scorpion proxy by OnePageRules. I actually have two of them, slightly different designs, so maybe if I get this one done fast enough I might try and tackle the other one too. I've got a lot of other stuff I'm trying to do at the same time so that's why I'm only doing the one currently.

Posting my pics early as I’m done on these Skeleton Archers.

Not the greatest pictures but then they’re not the greatest paint jobs either. Just the old unit batch quality job and happy to get another unit painted and table ready.

We all know that civilization will end with a whimper rather than a bang. And what comes after?

Mutants! Black Site Studios released these along with the 2nd edition of This Is Not A Test, which arrived last week after a long, long wait. Which I guess makes this a meta-entry, as well.

Now showing various models from the previously abandoned projects!

Painting total as of 25 May 2025: 67plus a Deva King statue

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

I've decided to really concentrate on Morg N Thorg, and just enter him for the monthly contest

Obviously the shoulder skin needs more layers/blending, but even under dakka super zoom I'm not embarrassed by the face- Very happy so far.

I think I took the whole "Slow & Steady" a bit too literally.

I was supposed to paint the whole Wardog during the weekend long workshop, or at least get it nearly done.
Started on the basic weathering steps for the whole thing, but realized that I could not reproduce all the steps for the whole thing, so I decided to focus on the melee arm

Started on the gun arm, but it still needs quite a bit of work as I went too far with the dark glazes.

I might have to move this to the longer summer thread, as I won't likely be able to finish it during this month to the quality that I'm hoping to achieve.
But I might find a new entry for this one yet.

I made progress on Jeff. I don't often post WIP pictures because I usually don't like the look of partially painted models much until very late in painting. In this case I figure there's some use in preserving the pre-shading stage for posterity. Not the least because I'm not just painting black but also doing OSL again for the first time in many years. It'll make for better learning if I have a before/after picture.
