Hi

Just a few shots of my latest WIP for my Thousand Sons which I've been working on today, a Necrodefiler. I need to do some small hole filling and cables for the heavy flamers but it all went together better than I planned.

Keeping it short tonight as I have to get some sleep as I have to get up for work at 03:30 tomorrow morning (Sunday ), I couldnt resist showing him off though.

I think they had the same idea and decided to call me early at 01:30 instead and I've been up since, I was even varnishing my painted guys after I finished at 6am.

So as I've mentioned above all my painted guys now have two coats of varnish so that gives me some more room on my painting area to fit the Necrodefiler in and a Vindicator I won off ebay.

I've got a few odd guys left to paint up then I can work on the defiler.

1 Sorcerer for my Thousand Sons squad, I've been doing a few bits on him today. I'd say 50% finished at the moment.
2 Missile Launcher Havocs
1 Chosen

Then its the Defiler, a squad of Thousand Sons and then finishing off with the Vindicator which gives me 1500 points for the end of August. Oh and I need to work out how to play as things have changed a lot since 2nd Edition!.

After that I have a ton of other Chaos stuff planned and my list keeps expanding.

I got put off painting the last few weeks due to to all the bad vibes from Games Workshop with their planned price rises, the new Finecast range and what they have done to stop mail order companys supplying the sounthern countries.

But I've kicked myself back into gear today and finished my Thousand Sons Sorcerer and undercoated my Vindicator as well.

I've just put in an order for some special pearl (pearlescent) paint. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with this, it should fit in with the Tzeentch change theme on my vehicles.

The Necrodefiler is still waiting to be green stuffed at the moment.

It is looking promising. The gold could use some work but appart from that it looks great. I eespecially like the green robes.

Yeah for the gold on the armour I used a different base colour to normal to try painting it in a different way but I'm not greatly pleased with how it turned out.

Thanks daxx, I'm using Vallejo paints but I've listed the GW version of the same colour as well.

Base coat Army painter spray black

For the Blue its

Undercoat Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW)
Highlight inside areas of Imperial Blue with a mix of about 70% Imperial Blue (Regal Blue GW) 30% Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Highlight any areas where light would reflect Magic Blue (Enchanted Blue GW)
Ink Wash Asurmen Blue GW

For the Gold its

Polished Gold (Burnished Gold GW)
Ink wash Gryphonne Sepia GW

On the Sorcerer I tried a coat of Heavy Ochre (Tausept Ochre GW) before applying the Polished Gold, it gives the gold a warmer feel.

Nice defiler. I'll be interested to see how the pearlescent paint works out for you, I'd been thinking about using it for some Tyranids.

Thanks the pearlescent paint (powder) arrived today, looking forward to using but I need something to test it on before I hit the Vindicator with it. I might try and get some panels on my dreadnought painted and test it on that. I ordered blue pearl though to go on blue, maybe I should have ordered green not sure will post pics when I have something to show.

Well I've finished my two extra havoc marines with FW Missile Launchers. To be honest they were a complete disaster from the start. Trying to glue three different types of material together wasn’t easy to say the least, these guys have plastic legs, back packs, shoulder pads and backs, metal heads and front and resin weapons and arms.

After I managed to get them to stay together the spray undercoat went horribly wrong as its all rough on the legs and the front of the missile launcher on the left hand side. I've no idea what caused this and the rest of the minis that were sprayed at the same time came out fine including my Khorne FW Daemon Prince, I would have been most upset if he came out like these two.

In the end I didn’t enjoy painting them and it does show, but here they are none the less.

Next up is the Vindicator as the Necrodefiler is still waiting on work, I can’t use GS while the weather is bad as it really irritates my skin.

I started painting my Vindicator today and it was going very well until I decided to test out my pearl powder I had for this very project. Of course me being me I forgot to test it first, so I mixed it into the varnish to apply it on a 1 to 4 ratio as per instructions (it could have been a bit more…).

Well it didn’t go very well that’s for sure as below. The pearl powder had a strange effect on the varnish and it didn’t dry clear as per normal leaving me with a very streaky mess.

I then walked away in despair hoping that if I left it for the four hours drying time for varnish it might get better, I wasn’t hopeful though and four hours went past and it stayed the same.

So I’ve just gone over it with a very watered down blue the same colour as the base coat and then washed it in Asurmen Blue to try and take some of those streak marks away.

I’m now looking at this.

I don’t really know what to do with it now, it’s still a bit streaky but it’s not as easy to notice although the blue has a very odd colour effect to it (it’s not a bad odd).

Should I keep it like this and try and replicate it over the rest of the vehicle or try something else, any advice would be welcome.

I will be weathering and doing damage as well to the vehicle.

You need to use purity seal after Varnishing. Varnish always leaves a shiny reflection. Anything that I paint and seal I start with hard coat and then follow up with purity seal.

I'm using a matt varnish which I've used for all the other models in the army so far and it doesn’t have a shiny finish.

I really like it so far, some insane conversion work going on.

My favorite part is probably the custom banner on the thousand sons, looks sweet.

My opinion on the regular csm marines is to paint them something other than that gold scheme, I dont think it will look good with the rest of the army. Mabe paint them purple or blue and black or something.

Thanks glad you like them.

The custom banner is actually a converted War Banner from Crocodile Games.

In regards to the regular marines the gold ones (The Reborn) they should look ok when I get the right models from FW, the army wont be just Thousand Sons there will be lots of other warbands as well as I have too many ideas to limit myself to just Thousand Sons.

This is going to be a huge project.

I found out what went wrong it was too much pearl powder.

I've since painted the rest of the Vindicator and it looks lots better I need to redo the highlights on the side I done first as per the pictures in the above post.

Once I've got it all to the same level I'll post another WIP pic, should be in a few days.

I also need to think how to paint the dozer blade.

I really love the new Tomb Kings models, I think I am going to get some of the Tomb Stalkers to run with my Daemons and I am itching to figure out a way to bring in that sphynx somehow.

Yeah they are really nice, you could use one as a Soul Grinder with a few parts (arms/claw) from ebay.

Well it seems you are in a bit of a mess. This is why I use blending and highlighting.

Your other stuff is looking good though. On your sorcerer you might want to add a fine highlight the gold with chainmail to improve it a bit.

The Vindicator is back in business again I've been giving it lots of love and attention and its starting to pay off, its now had three coats of pearl and hopefully the last will be done tomorrow then I can work on the none blue parts.

Heres a not very good pic, best I could do while the light was fading. I should be able to get some pics outside on the weekend so you can see the effect more clearly.
