Sorry I haven't posted an update, project's on hold until I get to confer with a friend about strategy and tactics. Since this is one in a group of 5, I have to make sure I get it right the first time.

Best,

Mini-rant... about my own psyche.

Drives me nuts... when I'm at work... I'm highly motivated to paint. When I get home... after working, helping the kids with homework, helping my wife with the house or dinner, dishes, dinner, yard work, etc... I'm seriously lacking in motivation. The painting desk is looking very "meh" now-a-days. Even on mornings where I wake up a some stupid hour (like this morning... 2 AM), when I used to get a TON of painting done... I just am not very enthusiastic & will like as not veg out in front of the TV. I managed to glue a little brass eagle to the chest of the LoTD and wash the Hordes figure I'm working on... that's it. When compared to the last 5 days or so... that was major progress.

I know how you're feeling Gits, I'm staring at a bunch of Skorne models that I'm struggling to paint, and I want to paint when I'm at work, but when I get home, all I want to do is plop down and play some video games, or find some cool place to retreat to in this May heat.

I been running into the same rut! Which is why I have been asking to paint with some of my friends lately (such as yourself last Sunday and another local friend Tim on Wednesday). Otherwise, I just sit and stare at this partially assembled Tervigon hoping that it will sand its own bloody mold lines. However, instaed or watching TV, I have been playing SWTOR.

It's normal, Gits. I have the same problem. During the day I want to paint, but after work, going to the Y, walking the dog, doing yard work, helping with dinner, etc., I have no energy to model, even when I want to. I think Brian's right; you probably just need a break.

Thanks for the sage words of advice guys (except for you HAZ, you're no help at all).

It's just hard to "wind down" when I have mountains of figures to paint. If I'm not painting, I feel like I'm slacking off (even if I'm doing something else important). I need to de-program so that painting goes back to something I do to relax and shed stress rather than something that needs to be done and creates it.

Maybe I'll go fishing with the kids this weekend.

fishing sounds like a good stress reliever...

i think maybe your desk is too cluttered atm? maybe get some stuff out of view? back in some boxes and such things? then only concentrate on the stuff you really are in the mood to make? ... and... mate... you are seriously not under any pressure of any followers of this or your other threads... it is in fact only your hobby... we apreciate everything you deem worthy to share with us... so your choice here is the prime aspect of this thread and in essence your hobby!

Hey Gits, don't worry about the lack of painting, look at me, I just started and I'm feeling already the same, but I don't worry. The mood for painting and building will be back

If You go fishing (and You actually get anything ) I'll send You a couple of recipes for a tasty dinner, I'm a chef in rl, so You have to follow the procedures professionally

One of these days you should come over to our house with the boys and fish the crap out of our pond. We need to cut the population of the pan fish (blue gill) down a bit.

Hey Gits,

By the sounds of things you have a pretty full day as it is. No wonder you may be in no mood after the kids make it to bed. I'm at the stage where my kids are grown enough that they go to bed later than we do and I've only recently started painting regularly after some time away. In the meantime, I painted what and when I felt like it, with no pressure at all. Now that I've started back into my Orks, I'm enjoying it all the more. I'm quite sure the artist in you won't stay quiet for long.

Regardless, life is full of all sorts of awesome things to enjoy - feel free to go do some of those other things too.

Actually, I have been putting things away, and have made up my mind to divest myself of some things I know I'll never get finished... that will probably help.

I appreciate that very much Sel. Around here we get pike (if we're lucky), but mostly bass and panfish of varying sorts... though panfish fishing has been really down over the past few years, which is too bad as thy're my favorite. Be delighted for any recipes you might be willing to share!

Kids and I would love that. If you get too many in the pond the whole population will stay small.

@Guts: Thanks man, I appreciate that very much. And you're right of course... painting is an important thing to me but I'm not a professional so I have to wait at times for my muse to strike rather than just being able to turn it on at will. I actually did some work on the marine tonight while I was helping the kids with their homework. If I get a fresh post I'll put a pic up. Believe it or not, everyone's words kind of took some of the pressure off, which helps quite a bit. Still going to take more time off from painting... but it'll be a little here or there rather than just disappearing for a week or more.

My advice is to just walk away from it all.
Dont clean, dont reorganise, dont 'wind it down' just walk away for a short time.

Im in the same boat as you for daily grind plus Ive had a major chainmail project and some blacksmithing deadlines so when it came time to paint is was just another grind. Finally in April I just left the desk cluttered and right in the middle of a paintjob and just walked away, completely left it alone. I took the time to just be a dad and get some house work done and all the other stuff and never even thought of painting.

Then three nights ago I felt like sitting down and grabbed the brush and when I finally looked at the clock I figured it was time to get some sleep before the sun would crest the day. The bug is back and paint is awesome once again so seven plus weeks away did the trick.

All Im sayin man is dont sweet the paint, its summer the weather is nice and the joy on kids face as you toss a bass on them is priceless.

@1-i: You may well be right. I'm still limping along but perhaps a clean break for a while would be good. I guess we'll see how I feel over the next few days. Thanks though.

A little progress thanks to all the good vibes. The gold here is using the alcohol based stuff that Ifalna uses. Not bad to work with really. Goes on kind of dull but really shines up when it dries. Kept the reds very muted, starting with scorched earth & just shading up to red gore, with ogryn flesh and badab black wash (at the base) to tone it back down. Gold got a wash of sepia, followed by delvan mud in the recesses and a touch of shining gold on the highlights.

I really don't want much color on him beyond this save for the ghostly glow & the power weapon, which I'll probably do next.

Really like the look of the LotD so far Gits, and don't worry about the lack of motivation... at least your still posting, unlike some of us!

Hey Gits, I agree with the others, sometimes a break is good, so go for it and have a rest. Go fish, hunt, play with the kids and enoy time with the missus.

The LotD is looking great, are you going for a green effect like the army of the dead from Lord of the Rings?

Looks good Gits, love the gritty look of him, and the brass really 'pops'! Nice work.

ill give the same advice as above, a break can do the world of good, especially if you are losing motivation. Focus all your attention on something other than modelling/patinting, achieve something small that you have been wanting to do for a while, and then come back to this with (hopefully) your motivation renewed. (im thinking New Vegas... but anything that you can stand back afterwards and say 'i did this' will also work, even if it is just saying 'i spent time with my family'...)

I work night shift all the time and i have 11 hour shifts to just think about painting and modeling, i get inspired and totally keen until i get home on my days off and I'm too tired to paint anything and then i feel i have to force it and that's never good! personally I find i get inspired to paint again when I'm flat by finding some excellent 40k related artwork or even browsing older WD magazines to see something cool, I also think it has a lot to do with the sporadic nature of releases from GW as well, if they release a great model or character, a new vehicle or something that makes you think about it or how you can play against it, it kind of drives you because it's new and exciting, but when there's such a lull (stormtalon excluded) you kind of do get in a rut :-( you could even just sit with your models and just look at them! sounds silly but as it's a hobby that encompasses both the painting and gaming aspect as a form of fun and relaxation for us sometimes I just assemble all my troops and just sit and look at them proudly, they have good paint on them and i'm slowly getting a nice collection that looks cool and is very individual, you have the same! great painted models, a huge army that looks so amazing, it's something you can just take pride in and enjoy for what it is, toys for adults that are 1000 times better than G.I Joe! and it's something YOU did yourself, something that will always be yours and something that whether you are painting or not it will continue to be here to inspire all of us! so take a break if you need it, don't force it just hang out on Dakka and chat to us for a while :-)
