Re: Abnett

I did see a book about VR war reporting called "embedded" or somesuch by him at the scifi section of the bookstore about a year back. It seemed like an interesting concept but I never got around to reading it. I was always more of a Cain than Gaunt person.

Thanks but I think I'm ok for now. Maybe someday but for now I just can't really strike up the interest unless another Cain novel comes out.

I think I've pretty much just stopped reading the Horus Heresy and quite a bit of Black Library at this point. The HH has become a convoluted mess of Short Stories, Novellas, Audio Books, and the rare actual novel which means I've just stopped if it's not a book about the HH that actually moves the plot line or deals with characters/legions I care about.

Meh, BL used to get probably $100-$200 a year from me between hardbacks and paperbacks. Now they are lucky to get $30. Sad :(

I was in GW today asking about the most recent HH novel and was very surprised to be told the last full novel was Pythos.
There are several short story books and novellas but I thought it had moved on by at least a book or two since then =/

I wonder if they are reigning in releases so they dont outpace the FW series? Very disappointing if so.

I'm a little bewildered, as I was at the recent GW HQ reopening and pottered into the BL store, and found a little bright red slipcased collection (or single fat book) with the Tanith logo on the front, wrapped in red tissue paper.
I mistakenly assumed this was the recently released Sabbat Crusade anthology, and it not being payday, I didn't pick it up.
So I sent a mate over this week to pick a copy up, and the red book "has been withdrawn for now" and was actually something completely different. The anthology case is black and camoflage, unmissably different.

Anyone know what I dropped the ball on there? I only wanted the black anthology anyway, I'm just nosy.

A Northern Irish writer's books have been destroyed after lawyers ruled its title was too similar to that of an American author's work.

Thousands of copies of Paul Kearney's fantasy novel Dark Hunters: Umbra Sumus were scrapped after publishers Black Library received a cease and desist order from lawyers for Sherrilyn Kenyon.

She said the title of Co Down man Kearney's novel was too similar to her Dark Hunter series which sold over 12 million books.

Kearney argued "there's no way there could be any confusion" as his work is science fiction, while Kenyon's is described as 'paranormal romance'. However, Kearney revealed the book could be published with a different title.

Though it seems BL simply complied with this C&D and didn't fight it.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Unless Kearney's got a fabulous male torso on the cover, I doubt anyone would be confused. Still, The idea of some little ol' horny grandma plunging into a hack-and-slash is pretty amusing.

Embedded has some fun action scenes, but the plot literally is a down-on-his-luck-reporter running for his life, which lead to him stumbling again and again, by pure accident, through all the plot-points that allow him to unmask a huge interstellar conspiracy. Also, he goes from drunk, chain-smoking middle-aged reporter to Space-Navy-Seal by getting shot in the head. Makes most comic-book origin stories look plausible by comparison.

Hence why I want the actual numbers as ADB must get the most sales, I can see him (rightly) benefiting from the increase in margins if he has a cut in sales in his contract from this move. Its the other authors who haven't built the same reputation around their name and thus getting the same boost.

Wasn't the Potter books not available as ebooks for quite some time? That was a similar move by a much bigger franchise in that it limited availability of the product to a section of it's customer base.

Okay, I quite vividly remember that bit from the book. Well, sure that's then a case of Flesh and Iron being a rip, it does not however explain why he's also going after the SPACE MARINE game. Unless he thinks that the book spawned the game..

Isn't this lawsuit a bit late? People noted the similarities when that book was originally released, I doubt the author of the other book's been in the dark the whole time.

Pity, the Blood Gorgons series are some of the better written Black Library books, on par with Abnett, bar actually bothering to have proper endings. That they subvert and humanize the setting is great, especially the third book in that series that is from the perspective of some Chaos Space Marines (the second book having a Chaos cult member as a main character too was interesting, especially when another major character eventually falls to Chaos as well ...especially as its for reasons beyond "for the evulz").

Edit: Aye I was miffed a little when the latest Chaos Space Marines Codex came out with a Blood Gorgon on the cover, but there isn't a single reference to them at all inside. Feth you GW.

When the Harry Potter novels came out, ebooks weren't really a thing. Part of my job at the time of the last book was selling Sony Ereaders, as well as working with a certain book selling website, and the market just wasn't that big back then.

However, imagine Half Blood Prince was released as an expensive ebook or direct exclusive months before retailing where most customers buy their books. The spoilers would have spread wide and made the audience bitter or apathetic before they even read the first page. I've seen a lot of that happening with any HH novel that has a twist.

That doesn't strike me as plagiarism. He lifted a concept from House to House and used similar wording to convey it, but that happens all the time. It might even be intended as an homage or reference. We'd have to yank half of the sci fi books on the shelves if we went after every one of them that referenced or stole ideas from more recognized literary works and made them their own. There's even entire subgenres or "__________ In Space!" and "[other writer's idea] Plus A Twist! Take that!".

If you don’t want to read to the end, the short version is this: I’ve been offered – and have accepted – a job with Riot Games, the producer of the phenomenally successful League of Legends. Clan McNeill is moving to Los Angeles.
I’ve been chatting with Riot for a little while and now they’ve offered me the position of Senior Narrative Writer in their Los Angeles offices. So, yeah, in the summer we’re leaving Nottingham and the UK and relocating to sunny California in the US of A.
This wasn’t a decision we took lightly. I enjoyed the work I was doing, where I was doing it and the way life revolved around our kids, friends, family, work, school and all the usual happenings that make up the everyday. We had Evan and Amber to think of, our own jobs and our house, our friends and families. We liked having all that close, and the idea of making such a life-changing upheaval was very scary. Far easier just to maintain the status quo, eh? In short, we were comfortable, but sometimes you need to change things up, to step out of your comfort zone, and I think we were all at that stage.
I first spoke with Riot back in December. I went over for an informal chat, not really knowing what to expect, but going in with an open mind. The people I met there were fantastic; full of passion and enthusiasm for what they were doing, and I came away feeling I’d had a real meeting of minds with the spirit of Riot’s creative heart. These were people who thrived on the sheer joy of creativity, where every avenue could be explored to see where it went. I came away tremendously excited at the possibility of working within those teams.
We went back over to California as a family in February so everyone could see LA and Santa Monica, to find out if it was a place we could see ourselves living and working. It most definitely was. And my second meeting with the creative types in Riot more than confirmed my desire to work with them. Their attitude to the work and the potential for all it offers in the future is incredible, which makes me tremendously excited about being part of it.
After some long, serious, grown-up talks about making the move, Anita and I came to the conclusion that the opportunities for our family were too incredible to pass up. It’s a life-changing adventure that’s going to be exciting and challenging all at the same time. It’s the kind of chance we had to snatch with both hands, as it’s the kind that doesn’t come around more than once. And I’d hate to look back in years to come with any kind of regret for the chances we didn’t take. So with a mixture of giggling excitement and trepidation at the thought of stepping into this brave new world, we’re getting packed up and looking west to this fresh phase of our future.
Ah, but what does this mean for all things Warhammer…?

Well, first and foremost, I’m a writer, so I’m not going to stop writing books any more than I’m going to choose to stop breathing. I’m still working on my current Horus Heresy novel, The Crimson King (I’ve just handed in the first half…) and will continue to write for the Black Library. Clearly my output will diminish, what with having a full time, salaried day job, but I’ll still be keeping my hand in. I have stories of Uriel Ventris yet to tell and the Battle for Macragge isn’t going to write itself. And, having been involved with the Horus Heresy series since its very opening act, I’ll be damned if I’m not going to show up for its final dramas and its curtain calls. Expect the odd quick read or audio to pop up here and there too. In short, I’m still going to keep you entertained with grim tales from the 41st Millennium, the Horus Heresy and beyond.
So, there you have it. As the summer dawns, Clan McNeill will be living it in California. Wish us well, and I’ll continue to talk to you all on Twitter, Facebook and e-mail.
Cheers,
Graham

I skimmed through it a couple weeks back. If you haven't read Damocles yet, three of the four stories are basically adverts for Riptides (who destroy everything smaller/less expensive $$ than them) and Knights (who are the only things that can beat up the less expensive Riptides). If you don't want to read fluff that only deserves to be listed right above the price of the kits on the GW site, there is one good story in there (the gue'vesa one).

Wow, that's pretty big news !

Shame for BL as I thought at his best he was one of the best authors in the stable. Some of the final lines of 'Mechanicum' were some of the most powerful and haunting I have read in a BL novel, although I'm not sure I could ever forgive him for how flippantly the 'fall' of Horus was handled in False Gods

But, completely understand him wanting to spread his wings in both his professional and personal life. Will actually make me want to check out anything that's produced by Riot now!

I think the big news is that LOL has an actual non-four letter word string narrative. Every time I hear about that game, it's a story about how toxic the tweens are who play it or more recently how many are being banned for being so toxic.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

As I said over on B&C: He says he'll still be writing the odd novel and some "quick reads" here and there, so honestly given BL's current business model will we actually notice anything different? Indeed maybe BL's current reluctance to let their authors write actual books was a factor in him choosing to take a "day job" where he will apparently have a good amount of creative freedom and plenty of work to do.

All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

He has written novels for Starcraft and Arkham Horror, too, so he isn't too dependent on BL. I'd like to see him spread out even more, to be honest. GW's stranglehold on BL is killing it.

I'd also love to see ADB write Star Trek novels.

BL is killing itself with its current release M.O. and writing less and less about different things, instead putting a hard focus certain cash cows over anything else.
