It was leaked alongside the new Nid info, but in the excitement about new gribblies appears to have been overlooked by many, so probably worth it's own thread, although I'm not sure what there is to say, other than I'm glad it didn't take them as long as the 6th one did.

Yeah, that's where I saw it, but no one seemed to be sparing it much notice.
It is nice they've done it rather quicker this time and for what doesn't seem to be a horrendous price (though I feel that might be due to desensitisation at this point).
Panic - ah, we can't have that, I'll amend the title accordingly.

Just the rules... They are listening!
$58
... So close..., but nope. So that's telling me the mandatory catalog is useless and the fluff is worth $27? And this is from the model company?
Really $35 Softcover and $20 mini form factor is what's needed. Then they gotta actually fix the rules for them to be worth those amounts. You know, pricing in line with competition that actually supports their rules.

release the minibook we got with the boxed set, for $25 and I'm in.
I don't need a hardback book that will be defunct in 2-4 years.

$58 is ludicrous for JUST rules. I'll continue buying starter box books for $25 off ebay.

Seriously, I can't find one for less than $34 and they usually want to tack on another $5 for shipping.
I sold all the copies I had to my gaming mates for $25 each, so they could have them, and now I'm using the Big Book because I refuse to pay $40 for the minibook, and I don't want to buy yet another Dark Vengeance.
Here's to hoping there is a mini rule book in the rumored Blood Angels/Tyranid Campaign box

In fairness, I have to commend them for doing this.
However, I'd still prefer either a cheaper price, or the small soft cover to be released.

Perhaps prices have risen since I last bothered buying them. I usual snag them right at release when the market is flooded with them, or buy them off local friends who have extras.

Holy crap. I've given away 3 mini books. Who in their right mind would buy the paper copy for $40-$50, when you can get the DV with all the models for ~$100 at many FLGS? It also comes with stormclaw, which is has tremendous modelling/troop value, though that is about $140, and availability is much more scarce.

Hmm...so rules only for $58.
The gamer's version of 5th edition cost $90, with all its templates, fancy box, fluff sections and all.
Now they're selling a stripped-down, barebones rules only of a rulebook only three-years removed from that edition, costing 65% of that whole release.
I honestly contemplate getting back into 40k a decent amount these days. But GW seems to be looking at their disposable rules like some cash cow that can't be wrung dry and, sorry to say, I'm not buying.

To be fair, $58 is the price of a codex. So against that metric, the price is reasonable.
Of course, that's ignoring the fact the the codexes are also ridiculously over-priced... so it's only reasonable as a basis of comparison, rather than as an actual price.

Yeah, I'm still stuck in the $35 mindset for codexes. I remember when they arbitrarily jumped up to $50, I was pretty baffled. lobbywatson wrote:Realistically its $48 American before applicable sales tax. The best I've seen is a $10 free for every $100 spent, but that's a bit different (one store back in NC offered 10% off with a $10 free-thing).

I get 10% locally, but I'm stuck in the:
Infinity: Free
Malifaux: $15 Mini rulebook, cards come with models are pay $20 for all the cards from your faction of choice
Warmachine: $20~ minirulebook from eBay (or $35 softback MSRP) and $60 for all the rules to every unit in the game for the life of the support of the product.
...kind of mindset. The codex mindset is dated, clunky, and expensive. Rules should be gravy to a minis company, not the premium. More so if they are hot street trash.

This is new. This is unusual. Dare I say... unprecedented? As far as Games Workshop is concerned, I mean. They've done model releases outside of their respective army's update before, but not like this. More monstrous creatures for Tyranids are always nice, but I'm left to wonder if this is the new gimmick. Once they finish updating Necrons and Blood Angels, are we just going to see Games Workshop update things this way? Like Warmachine? It's more efficient, certainly. I predict that this trend is going to happen for various armies over the course of the next 2-3 years, and then die off.

I personaly think that company that positioning itself like modeling company should treat their rules a means of attraction of new customers. Rules should be free on their web-site and relatively cheap at the stores. Rules should make people want to buy from them. For the most part codexes are just overgloryfied merchendise catalogue, where actual rules takes abourt 30-40% of space.

£20 is the reasonable, comparable price for a hardback rules only book. GW already produce it, bundled with the equivalent fluff and picture books for £50.

I'm referring to models released independently of the codex. You could say Dark Vengeance did that, but it was immediately followed by the two armies' respective codicies so I consider it more of an early wave for both. This, on the other hand, is right behind the Tyranid update, with no re-release of the rulebook in sight. In other words, this is something that's setting a new precedent.

So was he. They did it last edition. They also did it in 5th edition with the first few flyer kits. And IIRC it wasn't at all uncommon through 2nd edition, as they were still trying to get basic models out for a lot of armies right up until the start of 3rd ed.
