With the new edition of fantasy battle coming out, I have been racking my brain looking at lore and trying to pick my 3rd empire army (sadly the previous ones are sold and gone). I have done ostland, and Ostermark. Now I'm feeling Averland.... But I'm not settled yet.

I have done a test for ostland, and partial test model for Middenland, and a Averland spearman.

I think Averland may have clinched it. The great province of Osterlund which is most of the northern provinces and their close ties with Ulric and Ostermark interests me... Until I know more of the new lore on the state of the empire, I am reluctant to commit. I can always come back to them after all.

For now, this is what I have cobbled together, the remnants of several armies.

Nice work so far. The Averland spearman has my vote. Just because I have always liked their uniform colours.

Averland certainly looks great en-masse on the field. They really meet the Renaissance Germany feel well.

Averland is a great scheme, I don't see many people with an Ostermark scheme so I'd say go for that.

Thank you all. It's definitely Averland that I am doing!

Not much in the way of progress. It's been a mix of work and commissions.

I did get some work done on a unit of hand gunners. Not much left until they are done.

I also found a torso in my space marines bits box so so I created another sergeant for a future unit of swordsmen, also a swords man test model.

And finally I got a test base done on the ostland greatsword. Any thoughts? I think the green tift may be out of place, but the shrub can stay

That is some amazing yellow. I think the base looks fine, if you avoid "mud" and put him in the front rank where grass wouldn't be trampled yet?

I guess i have to pick up my Chaos warriors again.

Great to see another Old World blog! Averland is going to pop, as black and yellow is the strongest color combination for the human eye. People will certianly be drawn to it. Looking forward to future updates!

Great work, that yellow is excellent. What did you use for the larger bases? Did you just order them online or make yourself?

Just got them of eBay about 8 months ago when the first hints of base size started to come out.

Glorious! Averland has a fantastic colour scheme, and you have executed it with grace.

May I propose drilling out the barrel mouths of the handguns? It would raise them to the next level befitting your fine painting.

Thank you for all your lovely comments!

Progress at last, my first unit of Averland hand gunners. Floppy fancy uniforms, they must be from one of the larger provinces.

After much thought and deliberation I have decided on knights of the blazing sun. They have a large presence in Averland and lots of influence. Plus a very complimentary colour scheme. WIP

I just saw a batrep today with a unit of blazing sun knights. They look great, excited to see the full unit when they're complete

You're living my dream, Drake. I always wanted an Empire army and Averland would be the route I would go, but it's just too much time/money for me these days.

Those Empire minis look so fun to paint. I'm glad they're bringing back old world.
I just wish they'd also bring back those old building terrain sets as well.

I've finally got a new regiment painted. A unit of knights of the blazing sun.

I need to add more Demigryph knights into the army, but unfortunately they are not easy to get hold of.

If I may ask, what kind of sand are you using on the knights base? Do you have any tips for basing with sand? By the way, your army looks great. Instantly exalted.

@bullisariuscowl thanks
It's a mixture of sands I've bought over the years. But I hear chinchilla sand from a pet store is good, plus comes in a huge quantity.

Personally I would sand it, let it dry for as long as possible and then prime the models with your rattle can. Or put drops of watered down PVA after it drys to lock it in. The sand can flake off but, but once it's locked in and painted it will be solid.

I bought a huge 5 kg bag of 'vogelsand' (bird sand) today. Felt like sisyphus lugging it home in my already-heavy bag. I think the basing is working pretty well, i have my BA tactical squad based. I also noticed some tiny rocks i mixed in the sand myself( just wanted to see how it would work) wouldnt stick so i picked some off, but afterwards i could peel off a minute amount of sand, kind of like how you would peel leftover skin off an apple slice, if you know what i mean. This left some very very small gaps in the base (i'm going for a desert one so im sure it will look fine). Is this normal? will it get solved with the thin PVA mix i apply? Just wanted to know. Thanks for the help, btw.

Aye, a coat of PVA thinned with water should seal the sand to the base. If small rocks don't stick with PVA, don't be afraid to teach them a lesson with a dab of superglue...

Using a dropper to drip a drop of isopropyl onto the sand and then adding thinned PVA will help the glue absorb into the basing mix and seal it better.
