A couple of months ago i started my Death Korps project. I'm more aiming this at being an AM codex army using Death Korps figures rather than using the Forge World lists. This is mainly because I want to be able to find a game more easily once i have finished (although we'll probably be on 12th Ed by then!). I've already finished some infantry and cavalry that i've posted over on the showcase forum http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/707108.page. This month i've moved onto the armour.
The concept of the army is that it is a mobile force that exists to exploit breakthroughs in the trench lines - hence it has more armour & cavalry and fewer footsloggers than a normal Death Korps army. The theme is based around WW1 French - so horizon blue uniforms, cavalry in pseudo Napoleonic uniform and for the armour the elaborate multi coloured designs that the French started to use from c1917 onwards.
This post catches up a bit on my work of the last couple of weeks. I'll try to keep it closer to "real time" from now on.
My armour arrives.....
First i'm tackling the Chimeras. My initial force has four of them : Three carrying Veterans and one command vehicle. I am intending to make each vehicle slightly distinctive with its own story
#1 - Heavily weathered and battle damaged having just been recently in action
#2 - A relatively 'clean' model - this is a replacement vehicle for the original #2 that was recently destroyed
#3 - Support vehicle with lots of baggage and an unditching beam
Command vehicle - comms equipment and the top hatches open to reveal the interior
Here's some of the WIP shots from last week
Stowage rack
Scratchbuilt unditching beam
Command Vehicle interior
Initial spraying of the tracks. Once the camouflage is painted i'll be adding these to the models and then weathering & highlighting further

Well, if that interior's any indication, this should be a great looking army. Can't wait to see more.

thanks. The cream colour is a blend of Vallejo Air colours - 5 parts white to 1 part Desert Sand. I then did a very weak enamel wash of Tan to dirty it up a bit

Very nice indeed - this is shaping up to be a good blog. Do like the addition of the bracket above the troop compartment hatch.

Initial positioning of crewman and some battle damage on Chimera #1. Two of the smoke canisters have been deployed and not reloaded yet

For some reason I am always under the impression that Imperial vehicles aren't all too convertible or customisable, but then people like you show up and prove that just little changes can make all the difference for a good looking tank.
Nice work, I'll definitely be trying to follow this blog.

So the camouflage scheme in keeping with my overall theme will emulate the French tank camo of the First World War. The overall impression is as per the pic below - blobs of colours delineated by heavy black borders
I started this project as a way of improving my airbrushing skills and boy does this type of scheme give an opportunity to improve! (i.e. its bloody faffy!)
Marked out with Blu Tac
First blocks of yellow tan sprayed in
Spraying each block of colour using clingfilm to progressively mask off the areas already painted. I went for clingfilm as it is easier to shape into the irregular patterns than masking tape and less likely to lift the paint
Basic colour scheme complete
Next step is to hand paint the black borders before moving on to decals and weathering

A short Xmas break from painting the tanks. This figure will actually be made to fit into my Death Korps army. A common First War propaganda motif would be that of defenceless nuns ravaged by the beast-like enemy and then rescued by brave Tommies/Poilus etc.
As an alternative My WW1 themed guardsmen will find themselves in a difficult spot and armed only with lasguns are facing the obligatory alien ravaging before they are duly rescued by gun toting Sisters led by the Canoness....

Been a bit distracted by real life recently but i'm slowly making progress on the weathering for the chimeras. All the base weathering and chipping has been done on this one but still got to finish the detailing, mud and crew figure
