The second -=]_,=- sponsored, friendly, hobby-promoting terrain competition is...
-=]_,=- Contest #2 -=]_,=-
Cookie Package
"You must scratch build some terrain feature utilizing every different material you get after consuming a package of cookies...so foil, wrappings, container...whatever the range of cookies you prefer, you have to use a recognizable amount of the different materials thereof...
1. It must be based
2. You must provide at least 1 WIP photo, which makes it CLEARLY obvious it is built from coockiepackage materials (other additional materials are of course allowed) and at least 1 completed photo to be eligible.
3. It must be painted.
4. The deadline is September 4th, 2012.
-ALL Dakka Registered users are welcome to enter! Entry is as simple as Posting your work here on this thread.
-You may feel free to post running WIP shots here if you wish, or you may choose to keep it a secret and just taunt your opponents with banter, your choice.
-On September 5th I will judge the winner, who will be rewarded with a true LoER gem specially crafted for this occasion by me! The winner gets to set the parameters (and optional fabulous prize) for the next competition as well as become the judge for the next competition after he/she wins. The Judge does not have to stick to a material like I am, you instead may choose a theme such as "bunkers" or "sandbags" or whatever you wish within reason.
-Judges are not eligible to participate in the contest that they are judging...EVER. Judges set their own judging criteria on a per-competition basis. The Judge's decision is FINAL, feel free to Complain about it all you like, but know that it won't make any difference
Have fun, don´t let the cookies go to waste and join the competion...
Automatically Appended Next Post: for referrence.... this is what is meant with containers:
Although I will not be entering this one for 2 reasons, one RL is to manic at the moment no real spare time second I hate trying to use soft plastic trays I always crush the dam things
Hopefully by the next comp I will have the time, hey I might even have finished my first comp entry
dsteingass wrote:I intend to use the foil wrapper too!
that my friend is totally true to the comeptition rules!!! to all the others! please bear that in mind... whatever non digestable stuff comes with a full package of cookies... it has to be used...
dave... your pic absolutly is the kind of pic that is needed...shows the contens and the materials about to be used...and even gives me a nice show of cookies around the world
and LDD... BECAUSE i like to see peeps get accustomed and tame the soft materials i came up with this theme for the comp at all...it is THE broadening of hoizons i am after will shamelessly nick every idea i can get away with^^
so i take it... these are for now the contestants as follows: (correct me if i am wrong...)

You won you're the master no argument here Vik " bowing down and cowering at the same time " its just I cant get on with soft packaging myself.
Mind you are you calling for cookies or biscuits in general as cookies are a pacific type of confectionary in the UK, which in my mind would limit the choices of packaging.
Plus does it have to be foil packs this once again makes it even more awkward to source materials, I don't want to be awkward honest just to iron out any kinks early.
I might have ago at something if I get the time thinking about, but you need to help me out Vik I need those lids you used for your UFO can you get me 2 I would be grateful
cookies and biskuits either way... it is not the type of contens but the packaging materials i am after... THE soft materials you are averse to... it is a test of strategies and to get the better of one's weaker self...
as a matter of fact... foil is also kina obligatory... mind you you needen´t have to use 20 square meters worth of foil understood? just a reasonable size of said material so that one can see what was used...
and i have atm enough to send you some... give me the start of next week and i send you those UFO lids! promise... BUT that makes joining the competition compulsory... deal?
by the way... those fig newtons ... are threy more crunchy in nature or more soft...just asking... as the judge i have already allowed them to take part
Firstly muffins do not come under biscuits at all DAVE !!!! they come under the heading of cakes or sweet dishes also puddings (sweet not savoury) and it is our language which you stole and butchered \
OK Vic deal I will do my best I have an idea but involves two kinds of biscuit ( not cakes ) containers and rappers
I'm interested to see what glue holds the foil-ish plastic wrapper. I have books that refer to using "lead foil" which is hard to get, so I'll have to do some experimenting.
LOL... that was one of my first quarrels i got here on dakka as someone pointed out to me that the dark angels chapter i made up...the earth angels i always misspelled to earth angles...after that ths error was burnt inside me^^ and i never redone it^^
The seedy underbelly black market of terrain-making lids...
LOL... well around 60 years ago i know my grandpa had to do just that...^^
First, do I have to use the wrapping by rule or will it just improve my chances of winning the judges' favour?
And second: Can I use an already finished model as an accessoire? (like parking my army's trukk behind a building)
well i thinkthere is nothing against spicing up the terrain piece you are building...i did the same in the last comp...ok... i used fresh painted but already assembled minis for this...
as for the foil... yaou HAVE to use the foil/ wrappings as per regulation but every question is a worthwhile one...
I'll start building tomorrow.... but no, not a trailer LDD rather a little diorama I just have to figure out a way to use the wrappings... I don't have to use all of it, do I?
Ooooh, I can get in on this one! I sneakily ate the last of my girlfriend's M&S white choc and raspberry cookies yesterday (thievery made it all the tastier!), and after a bit of rubbish raking, here's how mine begins:
I haven't seen wagon wheels in years! You know when you build something up so much as this amazing childhood treat, and it's almost inevitably going to be disappointing when you try it again? Wagon wheels are not going to be like that - they are going to be magically delicious when I find them
Hrm... a cookie package contest just when the missus is on a diet... Thats just plain nasty Vik. It forces me to donate cookies to the 15-odd animals here... And as I am pretty sure my dogs don't mind, the rats will probably get mad for not getting any...
Thank you for that

Nope. I couldn't have known on Saturday morning what you had done Friday afternoon. This is purely a fine example of great minds thinking alike.
On that note, I can't figure out what I'm going to do w/ mine to make it not look like a cup no matter what I do with it. I had to load these to my own space because I know if I were a Dakka Mod I'd delete them both for not being related to wargaming.
Absolutely no idea at all what I'm going to do w/ those. Dead blank. The only reason I bought them is because I want to make something I'm actually going to use, and that means had to be durable. You already know it's a (comparatively) rugged enough container.
Anyway, here's my hat in the ring. Off to figure out something to do w/ these things (that doesn't involve a trash can).

Off the top of my head, some sort of cooling tower, or storage tank...
One of the bad guys from 'Dr. Who', RW - a British kid's TV show that first aired in the 70s with a pretty massive cult following. Guess it never made it across the pond!
@RW - I spy some necro terrain! That's what the plans are for right? I'm really excited to see how that'll work out if so! The metal bit is from Antenociti's Workshop - I can't find it right now, but it's a door opener type thing designed as a small pad for 54mm games - works really well as a bigger terminal for 28mm too
I've got a more detailed pic of the packaging now - including the box bit that I thought I'd thrown away!
And here's how it's all looking so far:
I've never really done much plasticard work before, and it's turning out to be really fun! Feels like I'm kind of pandering to the judge by covering EVERYTHING in rivets, but what can you do Can you tell what it is yet? I'm being a bit mean and leaving out some context, but it's more fun with the teasers
yep scarp that is some munda terrain!, Excited to see what you make out of yours.. and to clear things up I did see 5min of Dr.Who once, but my favorite British show... is Mighty Boosh

I think Vik is trying to increase the total mass of the -=]_=- by fattening us up.
I'm going shopping tomorrow night in hopes of finding a different style of container. These cups look like cups and I'm not getting my mind bent around any idea on how to make them look less like cups and more like something that isn't a cup. Thought about fuel / chemical tanks, too goofy of a cup shape. Tried cardboard strips w/ rivets, looked like a cup wi/ rivets. Thought about cutting it up and re-gluing it to something that isn't so 'cup-like" but Vik wants the packaging to remain as original as possible.
Gah.

I didn't, and didn't forget Blackadder either, was staying on the 40K sci-fi theme.
and as i stated i have nasty sides... not even me would have schemed this way^^
and i totally understand you... noblesse oblige and all... after a certain amount of style you put into your terrain pieces you go for more and more convincing for the look... so
looked like a cup wi/ rivets
is understood that this won´t do for you anymore! and i can only encourage you to go shopping once again!

Wasnt the little old woman who fattened and ate Hansel and Gretel a german? Could we be seeing a modern version?
And I forgot about hitchikers guide to the galaxy, that was a good one
They are more flimsy than the excuse of a man arriving home drunk at 5 am on a Sunday morning.
I thought about filling them w/ something, but before I put that work into it I need to do a full mock-up because I few days ago I thought those cups would be awesome.
^ I know right? and skalk the only thing i can think of is that sprey insilation foam..
now with my project, no patients + badcutting = I had to use some filler on the first buidling in my peice, after I get it to look... good.. I'll post some more WIP's

an easy, cheap and fairly durable material to fill em with is "great stuff" expanding Urethane foam. Specifically the yellow kind they carry it at home Depot. and probaly at your local hardware store if there is one up by ya.
My wife heard me complaining about the cups so she bought cookies for her office yesterday and gave me the tray. She's pretty awesome like that.
I didn't like the tray much either but I glued it to a base for some stability and sprayed it flat black and another color after that. Seeing the natural shading and the actual shape / design has given me a lot of ideas above and beyond this contest. I want to do a plaster cast and build it up from there w/ bitz and detail, then send it to Galorn to see if he can cast it. I'm thinking something like this:
Mine will be intentionally less detailed, to represent something like this:
or this:
...just less detail. Looking to create a completely encapsulated look to it.
I'm going for an orky cookie-factory.... grots being forced to produce cookies from squigs and radioactive waste.... gonna be a fun project!
and I also have to figure out a way to fill my package... foam is a good idea, cheers garlon!
i see the star wars influence there too... tho i like skalks referrence pics too... and i think filling it with plaster is a good idea scarper... tho i admit... galorns idea to use expanding foam is a good one too...
as for the grimm fairy tales... everyone was german in these^^... tho germany was back then way bigger.... so you got lots of different folks back then too...
uh oh.... I should really start working more on this now...
anyway, this is how far I am atm... filled it with plaster, and you can take the cast out of the box.... so I could create a whole city of these lol!
mrmerlin... have you used a wooden rod inside or something to hold the blobs of plaster better together? i bet that would be helpful... but it looks really cool...
vik... no need for a stick. the cast will be safely inside the tray later, as I'll have to use the actual container for the comp, not te cast... it just gives it stability. But I thought it looked cool enough to post
I'm feeling the press of time upon me. This weekend is out of the question for modeling, I might have a couple days next week, and then I'm going to be gone for 9 days. The last few days of the contest I may or may not have time. Ugh.
I'll enter my best effort, but don't expect anything brilliant.
RW I'ma bloody slap you... I dropped in to see how this was progressing for everyone, and you ask "What is a Dalek"... @Mr Merlin - A cookie factory from cookie containers? Meta! Sounds like fun though - Should be able to get loads of character from the grots. I'm impressed your packaging is sturdy enough to pop out that cast!
@Skalk - I'd love to see it whatever stage it's at - your last entry was jaw-dropping. Totally feel you on the time issue though - it's one hell of a lot harder to throw yourself into something if you're not sure you'll have the time to follow through. Hope the new container works for you though!
I've got a bit more progress on the actual container part of mine, but I'm still trying not to give too many hints -
Been working on a pneumatic door:
And a considerably less well defended entrance (I ran the box card through a card crimper a few times, so it should have some good texture when it comes to painting!)
Am i posting this stuff in the right place, by the way? Or am I doing too many WiP shots? It's quiet in here!
indeed it is a bit quite atm... but updates as yours will vitalize it no doubt about it^^...
the pneumatic door looks really good... and the second one... well we have to see more about that... cardcrimper? hmmmm.... i have some at home too... will be intersting to see how much will be seen after painting...
I would like to throw my 2 cents into this contest.
In the interest of fairness, would it be appropriate if i used a piece of terrain that i had started, but not finished?
If it helps, the piece i would like to use is a building i made out of foamcore and plaster, but it's just the rough shape of the building. I never did any detail work to it.
IF you include the per regulations needed materials...the whole package range of one package of cookies of your choice then there is no arguing involved... then i would happily include you statas...did that answer your question?
Thanks a lot for the kind words - glad the door went down well! It was a happy accident really, the shape of the box needed something that stuck out instead of an inlaid door, and this seemed like a fun way to do it. I feel like i'm kind of crowding the thread here, so here's one shot of my progress, and I'll go in depth on my blog. Feel free to ignore!
(Apologies about the lighting - most of it isn't glued in place, and taking shots there seemed one hell of a lot easier than piecing in back together under my work lamp )
More in my own blog if you're interested, feel free to ignore if not!
Progress! I started working on the roof and put some PVA-and-sand-mix on the wooden base. With a few random bit and pieces stuck into it, it looks quite good:
and the rear. I made some tracks where the trukk will be parked:
the roof is some good ol' cardboard, with the top layer removed. looks ok i think:
and here is the the mess I created... gotta tidy this up tomorrow.... -_-
Seems I've been missing a lot of good stuff whilst off. Like this neat little comp that caught my eye whilst trying to grasp what I've missed.
All good stuff, and that last update Scarp....
So I'll try and throw something together for this...but bearing in mind my previous history and the fact my future sdchedule seems to be so crammed there's no room to write 'busy' in there....
Obviously the first step was to buy some more cookies
Spoiler:
" target="_new" rel="nofollow">
Next the ardous task of eating some of the spoils of war.
Then we start to play:
After washing down the cookies with some tea obviously.
After strengthening the inside with a few layers of pva and some of the cardboard box the chosen packet got stuck to some foamboard and had a camera battery compartment stuck to it.
In place of plasticard, work was done with the cardboard box, except the pipework. Athough there are some battered copper pipes to be added which were made with the card. Some cabling was formed from layers peeled from the box, and bits of the cellophane are being used as rags and tarpaulin.
I'll be posting my first few WIP pics tonight... It took me long enough to find some cookies in this house, let alone a piece of intact packaging...
So far though it looks like i'm gfoing to be the only one that does not turn the packaging upside down. I intend to create a raised section of overlapping sludge pools... Kinda like the golddigger pools of the old west... But with necropocalypse sludge...
at first it took me a sec to see the container mrmerlin...but i gotta say... the totally mess was worth it!!! good looking start!
and then monkeytroll... look what the cat dragged in!!! welcome , heartily welcome be thou! and boy you made an impression...!!! that ´s already damn fine looking...
at skalk... no time for feeling bitter... eat some cookies get a freindly smile and build!!!^^
and neil... by all means join... asap!!!
at maus... looking forward to your stuff... about time
@Mr M - Fantastic work! Reminded me at first glance of one of those long pre-fab military barrack buildings - it's already hard to tell that there's a cookie box in there, so kudos to you. Love the sand too - just a mix of PVA and sand you say? It looks great for it, and the tracks are a nice touch. Wonderful start.
@Monkeytroll - That is a lot of delicious cookies! And what a product too! I really like all the little details on the piping and the sidings, and that camera bit is one hell of a find. Your box looks a lot like mine, so I'm sure you'll take it in the spirit of competition if I say that you should stop working immediately and throw it away Great start though!
And ace to see you're on board too MauS - can't wait to see what you get up to!
Sort of relevant update! Neil very kindly gave me the recipe for his awesome sump, and I've been trying to do something similar. This is a test piece - not the base that my terrain will go on, but a test ground that will do as a mini pool for some later terrain. I've got the first few layers down (still 3 or 4 to go!). Hope you like!
In the past, I've found that the 'Realistic water' stuff can take up to a week to dry completely, but I've never used this much before! Plus it's getting mixed with inks, washes, wood polish and the blood of cattle slaughtered during a full moon, so who knows how it'll work...
EDIT: Oh crap! Neil made me promise not to mention that last one. Just pretend you didn't read it.
dsteingass wrote:OMG! Monkey! How did you bend the pipe so perfectly?? Or is that a Plastruct elbow?? Phenomenal-looking either way, but please tell me
Yes I want that answer as well, how many pieces of plastic rod have I broke trying this or melted
dsteingass wrote:OMG! Monkey! How did you bend the pipe so perfectly?? Or is that a Plastruct elbow?? Phenomenal-looking either way, but please tell me
This is so cool. I'd love to join the competition with an old terrain piece that I never finished, but I don't think I'd really be up to the deadline... having never painted a terrain piece yet.
The work that's up already is awesome. I'm definitly stealing the cardstock reinforcements on the side, there, Monkey.
GG - Hey, I didn't even manage to complete my entries for the two YEAR-LONG comps I was in. And I hardly have a good reputation for fast work besides that - as a quick glance at various parts of my desk will attest - GMS, Waagh Dakka, etc etc. Plus having no time at all in the near future
It just means you have to think a bit smaller
Case in point - the pipe on the side of my generator thingummybob. When I first added that battery compartment I envisaged a veritable network of fully flanged pipes running down the side, into the ground and over the top. A rare flash of reality somehow managed to find it's way into the recesses of my mind and I downgraded to a single un-flanged pipe as I knew there was a marginal chance that it could be finished.
I think I'm trying to tell you to get on it
Anyways, progress:
Oh, yeah - those are plastruct elbows Dave - I've not yet discovered a good way to bend pipes that big. They're very handy, but require a bit of filling and filing for more open pipework due to the nasty ol' punch out marks on one side.
The afore-mentioned beaten copper* pipes and a dodgy view of the other side.
Oh my! Is that colour already?
League members will be interested to know that currently there are cardboard rivets, dress-pin rivets and water-filter bead rivets in place.
No doubt there will be a chance to add more cabling/chains/junk etc after a bit more work with the crayons brushes.
Btw, there is a method I've seen for bending plastruct tubing and it's effective.
basically it's the same method that plumbers use for a quick bend. you use a long spring, something like you'd find inside curtain wire, you insert it inside the pipe, heat the pipe in the area you want to bend, and simply bend it. once the pipe is cool and set in the new possition you should be able to jimmy the spring clear from it. but you do need the spring to be nearly as thick as the inned dimensions of the tube your bending. I have to admit I havent tried it, but it seems effective.
Yeah, I've used similar techniques for narrower pipes, and very small diameters can be bent fairly easily with hands and patience, but I've not got good results with larger bores. Spring is a good idea though, I would default to flexible wire for the job, I'll have to give it a go sometime.
The spring idea's a good one from what I've seen, trouble is it's better to use a jig when doing it, otherwise you get all kinds of gaky angles lols...
My dad would stuff it with Playdoh and let it sit for a day or to to stiffen up then heat it with a cigarette lighter for, like, three seconds at a time til it sagged into the angle he needed......
mxwllmdr wrote:My dad would stuff it with Playdoh and let it sit for a day or to to stiffen up then heat it with a cigarette lighter for, like, three seconds at a time til it sagged into the angle he needed......
Might have to try that at some point Max, cheers!!!
and Maus, looking awesome... yet I want those cakes nao...
Thanx... I figured i'd just use the package as is, and try to 'camouflage' it properly. The outside needs a whole lot more work tho. And i'm afraid the water is too clear...
You are all wrong (with possible exception of monkeytroll)- it's a cupcake container, not a cookie container. The cupcake container contest isn't until the next time Vik wins the contest.
Anyway, here's where I am w/ this so far. My progress is sucking hard and I'm already rehearsing my concession speech for when I drop out of this one. There's no way I'm going to finish this in time. I haven't even added a single rivet yet.
However, still going to post this because I like the design of the package, will likely cast it in plaster at some point, and I'm looking for some feedback. Consider this piece to be a power generator of some kind. I offer example A and example B for the paint scheme.
Example A- Plasma Core
I am thinking OSL on the enclosure frame from the main plasma core. I have no idea how to do OSL but I've read some stuff online and many of the examples looked absolutely ridiculous. In fact, I've only seen OSL done well a few times (even some of my revered Dakka heroes don't seem to pull this one off). I can definitely see the application for OSL here, but if I go with this it'll be an experiment only and you can bet it'll be subdued and understated.
Example B- Electric Generator Coil
No OSL on this one, just dirty gritty old-fashioned archeotech. Up front I'll say I like this one much better. It's more in theme w/ my tabletop, lends a lot of possibility to the dented / smashed / 'may or may not still work' look, and would be a lot easier overall. I know, I know... not reaching for the stars. Right now I'd rather be reaching for a beer.
It's definetly the elctric generator! It will look perfect with the dents if you paint it all oily and rusty, while for the plasma thingy the container would need to be perfectly intact....
@Skalk - It would be a damn shame if you dropped out, mate - your entry for the last one was probably my favourite! Time issues can kick all our asses though :( Hope you do manage to get on top of it! In terms of the power plant, I think you're right to go for a giant copper coil - like you said, it fits a lot better with the battered aesthetic. The plasma one would need to be fairly pristine, or I imagine it wouldn't be pumping out any kind of OSL!
I am officially out of superglue now (glued my hands together when the edges split as I tried to roll the very last bit of it out of the tube ), but i'm off to get more first thing tomorrow. Should hopefully be ready for paint tomorrow afternoon!

Least you didn't glue your hand to your trouser leg like a kid did once in our FLGS... suffice to say, he was banned from using glue in store ever again
I'll stick w/ it to the end, I'm not going to pull the plug w/ this much time still left. Even w/ the time I'll be gone or otherwise not able to work on this, I still have... 5 or 6 days I could crank on it. I'll offer a genuine effort.
Excellent work from everyone so far. Really liking the look of some of them for sure. Vik's in for a tough job judging this one.
actually seeing all these WIP of yours makes me certain that i am such a lucky one...i don´t have to compete with you lot on this one... i am certain i wouldn´t have a chance to win
as for maus... I ALLOW IT... i don´t really care for cookie or bicuit or muffin... heck... a cake would even do if i get persuaded with cool looking stuff...so...bring it on...and i really like what i´ve seen so far here maus...!!!
and skalk... think of me as your personal version of Jacob Marley ...i will haunt your for eternity if you try to ditch out of this one!!! ...and just to through my hat into the ring... i vote for the plasma generator... that blue looks awesome on these parts...

and....
at the good green... sure you can join... maybe you can PM me what you want to join in with? then we can haggle about it?
worked on it some more. The roof is mostly done now, the rest is wip Please excuse the poor image quality....
This tank'll have "kookie batter" written on it...
plenty of rivets and chimneys:
random pipes and stuf:
what do you think?
I think this'll be a very tough one to judge...
Thanx Vik for not crushing my dreams As said, the plastic wrapper will be used... It'll be a canvas sheet to protect the locals from rain... (spoilerspoiler)
hey maus... i am not the man for crushing dreams... i settle for crushing peeps tho
and maus... that sprue work... be sure to include that in the sprue thread... buiding alternative terrain with sprue!
at mr.merlin...
now that is what i call a cool looking roky structure... will the container on yon trukk will be removabe?...and i like the idea of it filling or getting filled by the cookie factory...one minor issue tho... the toilet roll... will you do something to cover the diagonal slit there? that tends to ruin the look once painted... better use some paper ot something to cover it up....
lol thanks guys.... I was thinking about putting some rivets along that diagonal line.... with cookie batter oozing out. To make it look like a big sheet of srap metal quickly bent into the right shape lol
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and mauS.... really nice sprue work, and I love the hazard sign! Your entry will look awesome when its done!
Great stuff Mr Merlin, love the cookie batter tank, nice work with the battered panels.
That sump pool is looking horrible, and therefore very nice MauS. Good work guys.
Rogue, that's part of the battery compartment from a camera. A Sony Cybershot to be accurate, although you'll find similar in most battery powered hand held electronics.
And progress - The pipework and the treadplate have taken a bit of a beating now:
Pipe's done, bit more needed on the 'plate.
Other side's a bit bare still, but there's the pipe-stack and a crate to go yet.
rust and wear and tear is probably one of the nicest incarnations i have yet seen...seems your reappearance here was just in time for the comp...would have been a bloody loss for cookiedom and such things
Really great work. But I am not going to be able to join this one.....
The supplies for my Steampunk Idea have been delayed and just as well I suppose. I really need to continue working non-stop on the titans. Thanks for the cookies, though, Vik. My wife wouldn't have let my fat @$$ get them otherwise.

lol...hopefully your wife wont be mad at me for tempting you with cookies but your idea will someday take physical form? would love to see you go steampunk max!!!
I want to do some steam punk. My wife is a huge fan of it. THere is still a chance the supplies will drop with enough time for me to finish up. Let's hope......
@Monkeytroll - Wonderful, wonderful, hugely demoralising stuff! Your weathering is top notch, particularly on the pipe - I've got a couple of pictures I stole off your blog a few months ago that I still refer to when I'm trying to do weathered plate Keep it up!
@Mr M - It's coming together really well! I love all the detail in the chimneys on the roof, and where did you get that flexible plastic hose? I'd echo the comments on the toilet roll, but your cookie batter plan sounds really interesting too - I'd just worry that the spiral of toilet roll is potentially a really recognisable shape... The truck looks fanastic, by the way!
@MauS - Still looking wonderful, great work with the sprue. I'm really looking forward to your context pics! The little detail in the warning sign is awesome, and I'm not sure what you've done, but that water looks plenty murky enough to me
A little underwhelming after that lot, but here's my teaser update:
Not as much progress as I was hoping by now, but it's a start!
Very nice weathering on that, scarper! How'd you do it??

Thanks for the comment! That plastic hose comes from my "ancient" LEGO stuff.
Yeah, I really see the problem with the toilet roll... I think I'll have to find a way to cover it up. Hopefully that tredplate I ordered arives today...
I love these terrain blogs. I've been working on my army, but i will be competing in the next (there better be one!). I hope this continues for a long time! I especially enjoy the "reuse" theme
Wow Scarp, there's nothing underwhelming about that, beautiful weathering, and it looks great against that blue.
That outpost is looking sweet MauS, the only thing I'd suggest would be some rope, chains or perhaps..rivets..keeping some of the sprue beams together.
As you can see, there is still plenty to do to them, let alone painting... since I've lost me favorite GS sculpting tool, I could give it a go. What do you think?
Thanks guys! The weathering is just a mix of stippled GW paints, a few oil washes and some powders on a base of boltgun; followed by salt, hairspray and blue primer. I'm fairly new to several stages in that process Glad you like it though, cause there's more:
@MauS - Great little nest! Really characterful update, I love it. Woodgrain on the lasgun stock in particular is a lovely touch.
@Monkeytroll - *jawdrop* Beautiful weathering! Do you mind if I ask your recipe on the casing and highlights? I'd love to replicate that blue/gray on something of my own someday.
@The Good Green - Wonderful fortress! I love the squig pen, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with only some mesh screening me from a beastie like that
And admitting thats mostly because the foil wrapping is a pain in the proverbial hiney to work with, let alone paint... My friggin paint don't stick! My primer don't stick! Even my glue don't stick. I'm halfway through a semi-decent canvas roofing... but if i can use something other than the foil for it, I will... So using the foil only for a simple sign or post sounds okay in my book too...
I decided today that the hide-out will be a hunter's hide-out. So now i'm frantically painting zombie bits (heads, hanging torso, hands, to decorate further. After that its paper scraps, soda cans, highlighting on the cassette-deck, anything else i can come up with, fiddle my toe, walk my dogs, and then... sigh... its back to canvas roofing...
IF you reach a point where working with the foil gets too much a pain in the rear as you put it ... then a small amount is sufficient... soon i want to test the material a bit myself... maybe a coat of PVA or something might help?
a sign sounds good... and in the rules it was stated anyway that a significant measure of the material is enough.... make from this information what you deem necessary...
the only thing you have to take in mind is the fairness to each other for this comp.... if you think a small sign is still fair then i am game... was that helpful enough? i am no guy that wants to exclude someone so i think i want to see your craft in full swing... if it gets too much of a hustle then we find a solution together... after all we do it for the fun of it, non?
Cool Vik! Mind you, I still want to use the actual foil stuff, if I can find a primer that sticks... Point is, i have a printed piece left... if it were clear i'd use it as is i guess, like clear plastic... weather that up... But having a roof that says 'oeken'...
Unless...
Wait... maybe... Ah yes...
Unless its off a truck's trailer canvas...
anyway, not been well the last few days so not much progress... but still some:
I built the doorway and some pipes (will be riveted to torrow!):
that plate on top of it ios treadplate, in case the pic doesn't show it:
some stuff that will or might get added:
and the crew. From left to right: pulling a lever, carrying around a spanner, drilling something and ordering the others around:
more treadplate:
Liking the look of that MrMerlin, big fan of random debris
Not much to show, some more highlighting on the chips:
Scarp - It was sprayed with ogre flesh, then got very light over-sprays of two yellows and a light grey. A very light drybrush of rotting flesh in a few places, then a few wash dribbles were placed. Heavy sponging with dark flesh, using a brush to add definition here and there, and in places the sponge didn't catch well.
Then light sponging of tin bitz and very, very light sponging of macharius orange in a few spots. Highlighting the chips with rotting flesh now. Then there'll be some more washes, maybe a final spot of rotting flesh and depending on the finish some powders.
gotta agree.... monkey you make this later on a very hard job for me to judge about
BY THE WAY....
speaking of judging... if possible... could you all competors do me a favor once you have your pieces finished? could you do a pic with some red arrows to point out where the cookie package materials where used?? that would be greatly apreciated!!!
i gotta agree.,... for the sick humor and the use of rivets on this abort^^... which makes me think tho... does a greenhide poo??? i think they are without any peepee´s made... well how do they then get rid of stuff they ate? spontaneous combustion or like all other rganic lifeforms???
so before going any further... pour yourself a banner mate ...that is earned for real...
do you know it is always funny if someone does that list... where he places himself...i know a pretty mean and sarcastic way of thinking... but i tend to use that place you used too
