I honestly have no idea what you lot are on about around half the time...

@Bama - It is! The guy next to him is a scavenger I did a few months back:
Spoiler:

@LDD - (Love the new avatar, btw!) Hahaha, I know, right? Takes a - 'unique' group to get excited about pee-stained furniture I'm also going to take it as a slight on your gf that you consider urine-soaked mattresses to ba "a woman's touch..."
Hans was really chuffed that she was popular on here - I'm sure it won't take too much convincing to get her to try something else! I, however, am starting to get uncomfortable about all these 'missus' references

@dsteingass - Someone else beat me to it! They might also be a little peeved if I cast up their IP
http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=430_442_476&products_id=1768

@shaso - No doubt soon to be opened Thanks for the kind words!

@vik - Keeping it classy, I see - your dapper avatar is clearly a diversion

@Weety - That sentence made me laugh - we do indeed! You can get these and some similar street rubbish from Black Cat Bases. They have loads of fun stuff!

Had a bit of a motivation fail with studying this afternoon, and did a quick paintjob on some more terrainy stuff. Nothing too special, but it made me want to tear my eyes out less than looking at another antibiotic resistance chart. Hope you like!

The faded stripes are a little sloppy, but were fun to do nonetheless. My collection of garbage terrain grows!

100% WIN on the Plague Zombies!!! Man I really like those a lot! Makes me want to get back to my Cult army, but I'm staying focused on my Terrain project until I clear off my "on deck" shelf AND 6th Ed is released. I'd really like to do some conversion that will have direct application in the new rules.

The objective marker is disturbing and incredibly well done. I especially like the twisted torso, really makes you wonder what killed (her?). Yeah, a gaping head wound is obvious, but it could have been postmortem (so many cute little fuzzy critters in the Underhive.

Thanks so much for all the comments, guys - the caption contest really cracked me up! I think Jackanory's probably wins in my book though - I need to get some prizes or something together

@Mohaniker - Thanks so much, man, I really do appreciate that - it gets to be such a grind towards the end. And I'd love a game if you ever happen to be down this way! I've just done the OSCE (which I think went okay, even though one of my examination stations was osteogenesis bloody imperfecta ); still got VIVA and 2 SiPPS to go. Proper jealous that you've finished - huge congratulations on getting through everything! Are all your posts in the Deen?

@Dave - That is by far the worst joke I have heard all week Thanks!

@LDD - I am! And I dunno what it's like down your end, but where I work it's generally frowned upon from an infection control point-of-view if mattresses are pee-stained The sofa is a little small compared to heroic 28mm, but it'll probably end up in a barricade or similar, so shouldn't be too noticable

@Bama - He did! He told me to tell you to give him a punch when you find out...

@Vik - I actually based the tears off the office chair I'm sitting on now - student living and all that! Thanks a lot for the kind words.

@Skalk - Thanks a bunch! If you liked them, I think you may enjoy today's update too... I really want to tell you to get back to your cult (I seriously love that project), but I understand where you're coming from - don't want to put all that work in only to need to change it all later, or worse still, not be able to use things. Plus this way you get to make more amazing terrain!

@Rouge and Peter - What can I say, guys? You lot asked for it

Today's update is a mini celebration that my worst exam is out of the way (yesterday!) - a medical themed zombie that I've been working on with spare GS for a while. I'm actually pretty proud of how he turned out - not as gory as the others, but hopefully with more of a story to him.

The rubber gloves will be in a translucent medical blue when they're painted up. If you look close, you may see the source of infection on his forearm!

Just for an idea of how much GS went into this guy:

And a group shot, just for fun!

Hope you like him! Thanks so much again for all your comments, I really appreciate the support

@Bama - Thanks, man, really glad you like! I'll have to check out your stuff when you post it up.

@RW - Cheers for the kind words! These were a lot more fun to make than I imagine the GW ones would have been, and I always feel they look a little too 'cartoony' for 40k (those huge hands! *barf*). Have been convinced otherwise by some decent conversion work in the past though...

@Tim - That's a blast from the past! The Orange Box guy was one of the first minis I made, but I think I've seen the orks you're describing - one of them had a painting of a space marine held in front of him, right?

@Rawson - Thanks, man, really pleased you think so!

@Jackanory - He would have to be a very manly one, at least! Are facemasks and gloves a common get-up for Japanese school girls? I'm really worried I'm treading some really weird dangerous ground with that question that I don't fully understand... Does 'the pride of winning' count as a suitable contest prize? I believe whoever starts the contest also supplies the prizes Thanks for the kind words on the zombo though, I really appreciate that!

@Vik - It doesn't look like the most comfy pose, does it? He is indeed a shambler - I haven't really gone for any 'special' zombie types, just the staggering necromunda-plague ones Thank you for the compliment!

Yea I agree, there are some nice conversions with them (off the top of my mind PDH's Scavy ones), but for something like this, i think the more "realistic" zombie works best

@RW - Ghostflame's Scavvies and TwoSpartan's ghouls are pretty damn good too! It still really surprises me that no one has yet produced a decent box of plastic futuristic / modern zombies - I feel like it would be a big seller! Thanks again for the kind words about mine

@Jackanory - Wow, I didn't realise that! Is that a post-SARS thing? I saw a few people in the streets with facemasks during the swine flu scare, but that looks a little surreal from my culturally isolated standpoint Thanks for the photo!

I'm currently working on my 5th zombie, and final one for now. These guys are going to turn up on random event cards in necro games in the future, and might get a little backstory too!

I also thought people might be interested in this trailer of a game called 'The Last of Us', shown recently at E3. Should be good for some inspiration - the first few minutes are a couple of scavengers moving through a flooded and overgrown ruined cityscape, and the last few minutes a fairly visceral fight with some raider-types.

In case anyone plays videogames, it's made by the guys who did Uncharted, so might be quite good when it's finally done!

@Bama - Will head over now.

@RW - I was pretty sure I'd seen you post in the two of them! Still, hopefully someone else won't have - I'd love to send some traffic their way

@Two Spartan - Thanks man, really pleased that you like him! I'll pass on the message to Hannah too - I'm worried she's going to outdo me with very little effort

Another day, another exam. Next one's on Thursday! In the meantime, here's the final zombie, a much quicker job than the rest, though the strapping was pretty fiddly. It looks rough as anything here, but honestly, it's just caught the light weirdly :

Made me laugh how little modification the catachan vox head needed to look zomberiffic - it's a really terrible sculpt. The eyes are on different levels! This guy will be pretty soaked in promethium, even if some quick scout has made off with his actual flamer. I like the idea that he's leaving a long trail of fuel behind him, staggering around fighting the weight of the tank and the constriction of the sling, just waiting for someone to light the touchpaper and stand back

And here's the final group shot:

Each of them is carrying something semi valuable - grenades, medical gear, a gas mask, whatever. Anyone who drops one in a game can get a couple of cred reward - the gear's not going to be in great nick, but if you lie about where it came from, it'll still make a cred or two!

That's all the zombies I'm doing for now - should be more than enough to be a distraction in game!

and the flamer...well i exect a bit of GS will happen about the belt region? the soaked in promethium sounds rather like splendid idea... tho somehow i feel the paintjob of yours will spark more my interest in this one... somehow the flamer does not really touch me atm... tho i do share your views to the catachan head^^

@Alabama - Not for a while, I think. Still got the QA to paint up first! Thanks for the kind words.

@Vik - Not at all, he's my least favourite too! These guys were just a quick distraction that I could put a few hours into around the exams without having to think about too much - he had the bad luck of being the one made closest to the first written paper I'm sure he'll fit in once he's painted up anyway, and zombies don't have to look pretty The medic's arm was pretty simple - a round file to carve out a roughly bite-sized hole, fill it back in with GS and poke in some teeth marks. Easy! Glad you like it though

@Shaso - Preferably of the one that's closet to biting you

I think you ought to do more zombies, 5 is a menace but I think you need at least 10 for a horde. (further ideas - commissar zombie, ammunition carrying zombie, sniper zombie or even ogryn zombie). Plus they are awesome.

For the flamer zombie, how about painting him all blackened and charred, all skin flaking off his arm and face where his flamer exploded or something? The paint job could turn him from least favourite to coolest.

Man, you are really making me want to work on my Undead Guard again. Gah! I simply cannot right now. My main focus has to remain on my Terrain Project. I went through some more of my stuff last night and was staggered by what I found. I have some great stuff, I just have way too much that is unfinished.

Your vision of Plague Zombies is perfect. I got lazy on mine and simply used WFB Zombies, just removed the medieval weapons.

I will say that if the 6th Ed rumors are true and Cultists really are coming back, I'll be putting my Terrain Project on hold and get back to recruiting more Freedom Fighters to stand against Imperial tyranny!

@Neil - Thank you so much! I wonder how many people would want to paint their room with such a macabre colour?

@Vik - Hehe, no worries! Your way would probably have worked to, might even have got better results than mine. And 'attractive' and 'zombie' are two words I would never like to see beside eachother, so I can't agree with you more on the second part...

@Shaso - I'm sure every guard player wishes it still worked that way! I've never really understood the guys at the back getting shot first - maybe some very lucky ricochets?!

@RW - Thanks, man! Glad you like this one

@Bruticus - Cheers for the kind words, man! I'd love to do more, but I'm worried about getting overwhelmed - They are really (really!) fun to model up, and it would be really easy to let my other projects slide in favour of more of these I'm sure some more shamblers will appear between paintjobs too, so don't worry too much Thanks for the suggestions on more of them, some really good ideas in there! Really like the idea of the loader zombie actually - would be one hell of a prize for anyone who managed to put him down. I Love the painting idea as well - might be a bit of a stretch on my abilities with a brush, but I will have to try that out when it comes to painting him.

@Skalk - My evil plan is working! Soon you will succumb and return to the horde Thank you so much for the massive compliment! I think WFB Zombies work really well for plague zombies too (your enormous horde looks terrifying!), but I fancied a bit of a modelling project after a fair bit of painting recently.
I would absolutely love it if the rumours are true, and a pseudo-LATD codex made a return - can you imagine all the creative and amazing armies we'd start seeing on Dakka? Plus, I wouldn't be averse to a box of cultists for conversion fodder...

Remember that story I started writing last year? Solomon and his Jackal cell finding the shaft in Crockfall? No? I'd forgotten about it too Found it again a few days ago, and I thought I'd post my progress. Probably one more episode to go after this one.

Day 27
So we met some others out in East Crockfall today – traders out carting goods from Lakeside to Roth. Not the route I’d have taken. It all got a wee bit tense at first, warning shots fired, itchy trigger fingers. My boys are all fresh, no idea how to keep their calm yet. Had to pull Corin down, knock him behind some ruins, and Kaylan got to test whether that flak armour he’s so proud of still works. Could have gone bad, but no one dead on either side – don’t think things would have worked out so cleanly if their shots hadn’t swung so wide. Once things got calmed down, once we’d established that we weren’t trying to rob them, and they weren’t setting up an ambush themselves, things got a little friendlier. Kaylan held a grudge, went off and sat by himself, but that’s just his way. I got chatting to their train leader, this enormous Trypto bloke, called himself Boln. Turned out they were with the Kinsmouth Company, taking sea salvaged gear by road – Pretty seasoned, by the sounds of it. We shared some food, traded information, went on our way. Nice to see some friendly faces occasionally. Or, sort of friendly, anyway.
Nothing much else going on. Had to duck underground for a while when the wind picked up, found some pistons in an old growler wreck someone must have been putting back together. Serious contraband, back in the day – can see why they worked in the basement. Tubes are pretty corroded, but no cracks, seal’s still pretty good. Might be worth a few credits once we’re out of the wilds. Found an old waster nest with an ex-family in it, too. They’d been picked pretty clean, but Jorn found an autoclip in the jacket of one of the little ones, a couple of mask filters that looked pretty solid, as well as a few baccsticks. I let her keep them - she’s a good kid, and I’ve got no doubt at all that Mule or Kaylan would have pocketed that gear without a word.

Day 28
Corin bust his mask. Kicked in a barred door and the hinge caught him in the face. It’s just a crack in the visor, might not even have broken the seal, but he’s hive-born, not used to the surface. He’s convinced he’s going to die. Apparently some donkey-cave back in Goreth sold him extra filters by warning him of the ‘airborne runoff’ round here – if it’s who I think it is, we’ll be having a few words next time I’m back that way.
Got everyone on the lookout for a replacement, but I’m almost tempted to give him my own, just to calm him down. Air seems pretty clean today. Tempted, but I won’t. Bloody room was useless anyway – mouldy fashion clothes. Too fragile to wear before they rotted.
We’re in riot country now, near where the Crockfall evac left. One ship. The area immediately around the shuttleport housed six munitorums, four hundred thousand workers. The area of the city they were supposed to be evacuating held nearly fifteen million people. One ship. There are bones lining the roads here – the loyalist grunts didn’t discriminate. Can’t stand these places.
Still, the surface layers of Crockfall caught the rusinate rain when no one was prepared for it. Whatever people owned, it’s still here. And it might be worth finding. We’ll try munitorum B59-C tomorrow – I can’t imagine there’s anything left, but it’s never been picked over by the Jackal cells, so you never know, might be a ticket home for this lot.
Can hear shots tonight. A way off, to the West, but something to bear in mind. Never been out that way myself.

Day 34
Leaving the munitorum tomorrow. I made it clear before we headed in that we were not there to fight, and if anyone else had a claim to it, we stayed quiet and backed the hell out. Lot of these places are pretty sheltered, out of the rain and out of sight. Nice bases for some of the bandit gangs that prey on the caravans out here. This lot are green as hell – we wouldn’t stand a chance against the cutthroats.
Place was open – couple of warning signs around, some of them pretty recent, bit of gang-style graffiti, but nothing too threatening. It was dark inside, not too dark to see, but dark enough that Jorn thought it was a good idea to put her headlamp on. A quick tap, and she had it off again pretty quickly. Good kid, but not the smartest. We stuck close together, weapons drawn. Had to show Mule how to unjam his pistol this morning – apparently he hasn’t cleaned it since we set out. Could have taken his hand off if he’d tried to fire it, especially with his homemade shells. Says he’s used to bigger weapons, but for an ex-enforcer, he sure as hell doesn’t seem to know a whole lot about weapon maintenance. Worth remembering.
Couple of hours sweeping, and we knew that the place was ours.
According to the map, B59-C was ‘a production facility for promethium tanks for use in larger cargo trucks’. No actual promethium, no actual trucks, just the tanks. And there were a lot of them. Lorek said he was hoping some of the production equipment might still have the ‘spirit units’ or some such intact – never really understood all the technobabble, here or with the mech units back in the day. Either way, they’re supposed to be good for driving other gear too, so would have been perfect for fixing some of the purifiers back home. ‘Technoheresy’, he called it. I kind of like the term. Nothing there that hadn’t already been picked over anyway. A few saleable things, though mostly scrap now.
Someone had been here recently – couple of scorched firemarks and a few discarded food cans. We heard the gunfire again today too, still to the West. A little closer now though, seems like. Might be worth making tracks while we can. Mule and Kaylan are on watch tonight, and the rest of us are getting some sleep. We’ll head South in the morning.

Day 38
We found the shaft this evening, looks like an old elevator. It was in the basement of a wrecked hab block on 296th street, covered over by rubble and a large metal grille. Pretty well hidden, really, nothing you would have seen from the surface before the bombs hit. We were only down here because of an acid shower, and even in the same room, we only found it because Jorn almost collapsed the cover. The grille’s got a cog and a skull on it – only other place I’ve seen that is the hydroponics facility I used to guard with the Captain.
I’m pretty excited, to be honest. I’m trying to hide it so as not to get the boys too worked up, but – it goes deep, really deep, and it looks like it hasn’t been disturbed in decades. We’re too far out from the hive for it to be an older dome, and there are no research facilities documented in this area - if we’ve found one, it’s new. Vox contact with home is pretty sketchy from where we are, and it’ll only get worse as we go down. We’ve let Crail know where we are and asked for an extraction if there’s no further contact in a week’s time. No knowing how big this place is, and I’m sure as hell not leaving it til we’ve found whatever’s down there. If it is more of that greenhouse gear, it’ll be the most important find any Jackal cell’s ever made. Might be nothing though. Got to keep myself grounded. I’ve set up a relay here for my logs too. That way, if we’re not back up by the time extraction comes, they’ll know where to find us.
If anyone’s listening to this, personnel include myself; Lorek, our engineer; Mule and Kaylan, ex-enforcers; and Jorn and Corin, seeking citizenship in Pinepoint. We’ve been scavenging Crockfall and the craterside area for a few months now, so we’re all looking forward to you dragging out whatever the hell we’ve found down here and getting our asses home. Get some beers on ice for us!
It’s already dark and it seems like the power’s down, so we’re camping here tonight. I’ve sorted all the ropes, and we’re looking to move out in the morning.

Day 39
Four stories down, and I don’t like it here. This place is vast – biggest facility I’ve ever seen out in the wastes. I don’t see how it hasn’t been mapped out and picked clean by now. Each floor is at least three times the size of the manufactorum, and around the same height too – Corin dropped a mag a couple hours back, and other than almost getting him shot, the noise it made rang back and forth for a full quarter of an hour. And that’s one storey.
I’m excited, sure, but there’s no way this place can have gone unnoticed. All we’ve come across so far is storage units, five floors of them. Huge, unmarked containers sealed shut, can’t even find a hinge. Lor tried to pop one with some of that putty he carries around, but it barely dented it, and nearly deafened the rest of us. Shipping labels on some of them are for some site in Trypsane – Kaylan’s convinced it’s in the Burned City. Whatever’s in here, it’s either valuable or dangerous. Either one could get us home. If we can get in, that is.

It’s cold, too. I knew it would be, this far underground, but Throne, is it cold. Three layers of vest, Koan-fleece pullover and my jacket and I’m still shivering like a child. Dark too. With the mist that builds up in the mask, everything’s got kind of a haze to it. Keep seeing shapes in the torchlight. Kaylan’s been griping about it, wants to take his mask off. Says he can’t see properly and it’s fogging up his bionic. I gave him some gentle encouragement to keep it on – we’ve got no idea what the air’s like down here. No sense in risking it over a little discomfort. Corin and Jorn are terrified – Jorn’s hiding it well, but Corin’s the jumpiest I’ve seen him. I took his rifle from him. Didn’t even complain. He knows why. I’m keeping an eye on Jorn – she hates tight spaces, not sure if she’s been underground before. Have to see how she handles.
Lor, on the other hand, is like a little kid for a different reason – convinced himself he’ll be finding old world tech down here, can’t even keep himself from grinning. Crazy bastard’s served 3 jackal terms now. Lived in Pinepoint for years, didn’t even need the assignments. He’s brought home sealed ration crates from submerged PDF convoys, forged trade deals with Hope and Karlath and scavenged parts for the auto-doc from some terrifying gear out in the old penal colony, but he’s still not happy. This gak is what he’s here for. This is why he left the nest. Old man with a tech-bug, ever since he worked on the shuttleport tramways. I’m glad he’s with us, anyway.
The vox-caster’s just picking up static, and I can’t get a message out either. Not a problem, of course, thought we might lose contact for a few days. I think it’s the thickness of the walls – this place is built like a bunker. I hope this log’s still working, anyway, or I’m talking to a box down here. The power’s out too, of course, but this floor’s different from the others. We found what looks like a generator, hooked up to these massive turbines. Lor’s trying to get it running now. We’re staying put for tonight – no sense going further down if you can’t see your hand in front of your face.

Day 40
Couldn’t sleep. This place creaks. Not a gentle one, like the hive, but sudden, sharp. Like shearing metal. Every time it happened, I woke up convinced the place was collapsing on us. The others slept through it. Bastards.
The generator did nothing either. Lor got it going, eventually, once the rest of us had fallen asleep. This screech of grinding metal shocked the life out of me, got all of us up and weapons drawn. He was laughing his ass off, until he noticed I was having trouble controlling my temper. The lights didn’t come on, the turbines didn’t turn, no power to anything. Just this low background hum that lasted maybe thirty seconds, then more silence. No surprises this stuff’s not working like it’s supposed to anymore – looks ancient, might even have been abandoned before the evac.
We moved on this morning. Down around 10 stories now, and there’s nothing bloody here. There’s no light at all apart from the head lamps, just a single line of light from each of us, projecting all the way down to the far wall. A single, unbroken line. Huge, empty warehouses, not even dust and dirt. Not a sound either. Every footstep bounces off the walls and back. I caught Jorn and Lorek whispering, like they don’t want to break the silence – stupid bloody thinking, and I told them so. Caught myself doing it too though.

Kaylan’s worrying me. I don’t like the way he’s talking. Cowardly bastard wants to leave – he acts like he’s just being lazy, “leave it for the footsloggers”, but I can see that he’s bricking it. I know his type; dangerous. Shred morale without a hair on their own head out of place. Worked with a few of them before. I’ve heard rumours too, about why the two of them left the Skew. Mule was an Arbite’s kid. Incompetent, sure, but no Arbite’s little boy gets kicked out for that. Story is that Kaylan was a racketeer – ran chem trades with some buddies of his, arrested his competition, sent them up Quadring way, or on a short walk to the gallows. Can’t work that way for long, not with the Guild interest in chems that they pretend doesn’t exist. Word is, the two of them left in a hail of shrapnel. Feel almost bad for Mule – can’t imagine he even understands what happened to them.

Some more of the sealed crates on the 8th Floor down, but they set Lorek’s counter ticking, so we left it. Leave the radioactive nonsense for the boys with the gear. Starting to wonder if this place is worth the trouble, to be honest. Got a little excited this evening when the vox kicked in with something other than crackle – thought maybe the cavalry had turned up. Sounds like old recordings though, all monotonous voices and heavy static. Turned the damn thing off.

Day 41
The lights are on, which is a nice surprise. No idea what tripped it, but the lamps kicked in without a sound in the whole facility this morning. I was awake when it happened – was pacing around our camp, could have sworn movement had woke me up, near where Kaylan was sleeping. Place is making me jumpy. Even more surreal in the light down here – clean, clinical white, like a med centre. No sand, no damage. Whoever lived here could have moved out yesterday.
Took all day searching, but we’re five floors deeper. Til this floor, we could have been where we fething started though – more of these thone-damned untouchable containers. These ones are different though – All scorched, peeling paintwork and burnt shipping labels. I’m having a job working out what can possibly have caught fire, but there’s water marks everywhere too – they must have had one hell of a fire response system.
We can see the ground floor through the shaft now, far below, with what looks like it might once have been an elevator. Damn good to have a goal in sight: The boys are getting antsy, and even I was starting to wonder if this bloody place ever ended. I’m considering whether we should be heading up to the surface again – the cavalry should be in tomorrow or the next day, and this place doesn’t feel right. Whatever’s in these crates better be worth dragging them out of here.

Couldn’t sleep again last night – I can’t relax. I think I know what it is now, same sensation I used to get in the field, back in the day. Just as I’m falling asleep, I’ll wake at a noise, but there’s nothing there. It’s nerves, I know, but there’s no way in hell I’m going back to sleep until I’ve checked it out – it only ever happened when the loyalists were posted nearby.
Corin was awake too – I heard the kid mumbling a prayer. He’s terrified, never really been in any situation outside of the safety of a settlement. Cruel to send them out in this state, really, but it’s a choice he made - followed Jorn into it, as far as I understand. We got to talking, as much for my own entertainment as to calm him down. I need something to kill the nightime hours in here. He’s a musical kid, not used to the real world – sang with some others in a bar in Jento; a guitar, some homemade drums, used to sing harmonies. Made good credit, apparently – not good credit, of course, but enough to keep them fed and watered, at least. Not bad for a job that keeps you indoors.
He fell out with one of the others – over a girl? Money? Sounds like he barely knows himself. Left town in a rage, burnt all his bridges, figuring he’d do fine solo. Drinking holes round Lent taught him the hard way that he was just a part of a whole. Must have been even harder to find out that he had no other skills. He bounced place to place for a few months, finally ended up meeting Jorn in Hawthorn’s place in Roth – she let him tag along with her to Pinepoint. Good girl. They’d have eaten him alive out there.

That story is epic, glad to see an update. I remembered it, just figured you were off in some lost galaxy doing conversions. Nice to see the fluff coming back. Hoping there's more than just one more episode to go... and if there is, you shouldn't project that. Makes me think something sudden and very horrible is coming.

GW really needs to bring back the Chaos Cults. I've been frustrated for a long time that miniscule organizations ("miniscule" being a comparative term) like Adepta Sororitas and Ordo Hereticus get the official nod and their own rules while countless Cultists that exist on the 1,000,000 known worlds of the Imperium (I would realistically guess their number in the trillions) get nothing but the occasional nod in the fluff. That's insane. Granted, a lot of the miniature range they would create for the Cult could be easily converted (a.k.a. low sales margin) but come on... ignoring such a massive militant force that has had such an incredible impact on the entirety of the 40K universe makes absolutely no sense to me.

If they do come back, I expect the flood of new P&M blogs to be impressive and hopefully bring some quality work / genuine inspiration. And it will provide plenty of opportunity for people like you and me to brag that "we were Chaos before Chaos was cool".

Love the diary-fluff! I was half-hoping to get some zombie action, or mysteriously missing personnel, or strange footsteps in the stillness... looking forward to more.

Also, your zombies are freakin' sweet- the bite marks = inspiration. Looking forward to seeing the group painted- they've got a great look to them being all different, and I'd imagine them being interesting to paint, rather than slogging through standard zombies as cannon fodder.

@Shaso - I'm sure every guard player wishes it still worked that way! I've never really understood the guys at the back getting shot first - maybe some very lucky ricochets?!

Nah, most players would remove from the rear in 3rd and 5th to the idea of the mass moving so fast as to keep the frontline where it was as they basically bum-rush to get there.

@Dave - Brian got it, it's from the Cadian Command Sprue. Hope you liked the fluff!

@Skalk - Thanks so much, man! I've let the fluff slide a little recently on account of studying being really tough - It's a lot easier to push some putty around to relax at the end of a day than to sit down and write something. I'm really glad you like it though!
There is one update to go for this little story, but it hopefully shouldn't be too abrupt or sudden - it's more a case of it being really difficult to break up the remaining story into more than one chunk without it being too jarring. Still a fair bit to go, promise! And hopefully you won't have to wait a year for the next update
I know what you mean about the cultists - considering how many =I= types spend their entire multiple-century spanning careers rooting out and destroying insidious cults, how is it that there's no real way to represent them ingame? IG rules are alright, but don't really fit unless you force it. Plus it would be fun to be an insufferable 40k-hipster too
"Ugh, another cult army?! You just play them 'cause they're in now."

@Remi - Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it - I'm really jealous of the writing on your blog. The zombies were really fun to make - you can have a lot of fun just messing round with poses and injuries, and since they're zombies anyway, it doesn't matter if the joints are a little off Cheers for the kind words!

@Shaso - Well, people always find ways to get round the rules

There's also the selfish opportunist side of me that looks forward to feasting upon the corpses of numerous failed projects and shattered dreams. There will hordes of kids that will scoop this stuff up, play it a few times, and then dump it on eBay for a fraction of the original cost as they move on to the next new thing that GW releases.

@neil - Thanks so much! I've been trying to keep an air of threat up without too much happening at the moment. No telling how long that'll continue though

@skalk - I hadn't even thought of that! My internal evil capitalist is laughing evilly as we speak. I'm really looking forward to the ally rules to be honest - it would be a lot of fun to do a refitted land-speeder style skimmer crewed by wastelanders, or even a storm-style transport!

@Remi - You're too kind, man, honestly. Thank you! Not sure when I'll next have a chance to do a little more (I'm moving flat in a few days!), but will do my best to get the rest of Solomon and co.'s tale up asap. I know where I'm going with it, so it's just a case of getting the time and inclination to sit down and write!

@RW - Not online, I'm afraid. I've got a thread for finished things which has most of the character fluff and longer stories for the Jackals on it, but the rest of it is just floating around. I'm adding the QA stories to it as the models get painted, but as you're aware, that's embarrassingly slow progress I'll need to make a thread or something and get it all together at some point soon.

@Dave - It's a great kit! There's loads of little gubbinz in there which turn out to be surprisingly useful. Especially if you're not above hacking them to component parts

Sorry for the mini absence - finished my finals a few days ago, and got my results on Friday, so lots of sitting in corners rocking slowly back and forward, first out of fear, and then due to hangover I passed though, and graduate a week today! Still no time to do proper projects as I'm also moving this week, so sorry if I'm dipping in and out. That being said, here's another quick zombie! Pretty simple stuff, but I was trying to get across the idea of a military policeman or something similar. He's got an unnatural arc to his spine, and he's just noticed that juve you were trying to sneak round the back

Luckily he's a leftie.

I also picked up this set of modular plaster terrain from a gent on Lead Adventure:

There are a fair few more tiles out of shot. It's obviously medieval rather than futuristic, but should still be a lot of fun for skirmish games until I've got a bit more space to make my own proper terrain! Playing with a good friend of mine tomorrow - probs 40k, but I might be able to talk him into a kill team or something if I bring this gear

Wish me luck with the move, and if there's radio silence over the next couple of days, that'll be why. Thanks so much again for all the kind words on the background!

New zombie looks cool, hilarious how suitable the Catachan stroke victim heads are for your purposes. He could maybe use a tiny bit more zombification as apart from the missing hand he looks pretty healthy.

That plaster scenery looks ideal, is it hirst arts stuff? You can easily add a few 40k flourishes to it, like some piping, crates or wires, that will make it look more suitable. It wouldn't take much to make it look like the catacombs of some gothic cathedral or the basement of a dingy cult hideout.

congrats on the graduation scarp! and I'll probibly fiddle through that thread to read all of your fluff to get some better backstory to your nice models, speaking of which this zombie is looking great! Now as Bruticus said about the head, what about trying some torn skin on the left cheek? Not only would it look cool, but it could give you some sculpting practice

@ Bruticus -
Bruticus wrote:Catachan stroke victim heads
absolutely cracked me up. I think they were going for some kind of Sylvester Stallone look, but for the whole army?! Most of the Catachan heads genuinely do look like one side of their face is melting. I appreciate what you mean about zombifying him a little more - I was thinking I could do it with paintwork, but I should probably try something a little more. Will update soon!
I think it is Hirst arts - I really need to get some of those moulds, the brick sets would be so fun to build with! I was considering modelling it up as a basement kind of level to a gothic church building I have, but I was worried it would look like I'd just tacked 40k bits to a medieval church. Will have to try one or two sections and see how it looks. Thanks for the suggestion!

@RW - Cheers, man, I really appreciate that! Torn skin is a good idea, will have to try that out and see how it looks. I've actually carved down the face a fair bit already - straight from the box he has one of those IN YOUR FACE GW UBERJAWS that wouldn't really be possible on someone without acromegaly, so I fixed what I could Will post up when I've made a little progress.

@Bama - Thank you, mate! I'll try and deaden him up a little more and have another bash. Cheers for the feedback!

@Neil - Thanks so much, Neil - I really appreciated the good luck messages too! And don't talk to me about that strike, I have some strong opinions about out-of-touch GPs and inflated egos Cheers too for the kind words on the zomb. When it comes to the plaster, I've heard that it might be worth varnishing before painting - it's supposed to make it less absorbent and stop the paint flaking off so much afterwards. Will need to report back when I've tried it

@MauS - Good to see you round again! Thanks so much for the compliment, that's really kind to say. I feel your pain with car overhauls - it gets so expensive so quickly, everything else needs to take a backseat for a while. Do you know anyone you could borrow a camera off to whet our appetites though? Looking forward to seeing you online again anyway - love how original all your gear is!

Got a chance to try out the new terrain today - played a zombie / objective collection game with my friend Mark over a few beers. 100 points each - a scavenger guard squad for me and 6 tooled up marines for him. There were 6 or 7 zombies on the table to start, and 4 objectives, with the zombies cycling back on by one of three randomly allocated entrances when they got put down. We gave them a 3+ invuln to represent their toughness, and a 2D6" move for a bit of a zombie shuffle. Anyone they took down also stood up and attacked the next round, so they were a scary force!

In typical zombie movie style, everything was going great until it all went to hell incredibly quickly. The shamblers didn't seem too much of a threat at first, and both sides swiped 2 of the objectives and put them down with ease. Just as we were discussing maybe upping their difficulty a bit, 4 zombies burst out of a side room and sprinted down one half of my guard team (we decided that it must have been a Red Bull storage compartment), they nommed away while the 2 survivors limped off with their objectives. The sarge was the first to go down - his 'lead from the front' plan didn't go so well. The space marines promptly shot most of the remainder dead as they fled around a corner corridor, stealing the tokens that they were carrying (bastards). A lucky bite then resulted in a couple of zombie marines (seriously tough guys!), and in the end, of the 16 who ventured into the catacombs, it was only the SM sergeant who emerged with all 4 tokens!

It was a lot of fun to play, and the homebrew rules were exciting, even if it did result in a messy end for my side. Was really great to get a game in - it's been so long since I had the time!

I'll see bout that camera. Maybe a friend of mine can be coerced to come over for a few pints tonight so he can take some shots... Got some zombies, some orks, a few gangers and some more scenics I really do need feedback on. Specially the stolen dumpster idea

I've always found it odd that the Catachans were supposedly a nod to Vietnam era US infantry forces (based on chatter from the '90's when they first came out) and that they all have some sort of slack-jawed dimwitted 'Rambo' look to them.

It's nice to know that the Empire still holds the colony in high regard.

@Bama - Thanks a lot for the show of faith, man!

@RW - It really was! It wasn't a very serious game, and we hadn't really planned it out, so I'm sure you can find better zombie rules out there. If you're interested though, it ended up like this:

1.The zombies that start out on the field have the basic stats of a guardsman. They are also fearless, have a 3++ save to represent how tough they are to kill, and have special movement rules. The more you can get on the table the better, and tight corridors and rooms are the way to go for setting up terrain!

2. A 'zombie turn' takes place before either player goes, i.e. one per 'turn'. For example: Zombie turn, my turn, Mark's turn, zombie turn, my turn, Mark's turn and so on.

3. Zombie movement depends on if they can see or hear people. If no-one is within the 90degree arc a zombie is facing, they move 2D6" in a random direction (scatter dice) and remain facing that direction at the end of their movement. If they can see someone, they move towards them. If their movement leaves them in B2B with an enemy, start close combat immediately. If a model leaves the zombie's LoS before it reaches him, the zombie will continue to move towards where he last saw the model. If he's still not there when the zombie gets to that point, the zombie will then lose interest and move randomly. We also played that any loud noises (weapon discharge, close combat etc.) within 18" would attract zombies.

4. If a zombie is killed, they reappear in the next zombie turn from one of three random entry points - roll to see which one. If a zombie kills a player, the player comes back as a zombie in the next zombie turn. They retain their stats, so zombie marines are scary! We allowed firing into combat, with rolls to determine randomly which combatant was hit. When one of my guardsmen was mobbed by three zombies, his buddies didn't hold back :O

5. The scenario we played had us using 100pts per side with kill team rules (but without the bottleing out). We were collecting tokens and trying to get out the way we came in, but should work for whatever you wanted to do.

Like I said, not the best rules, just something we threw together that evolved as we played. Let me know if you give it a try!

@MauS - Rules are above, let me know how it goes if you try them out! I'd love to see your new stuff - did you manage to convince your friend?

@Skalk - At least we think you're pretty buff?

Not much new to show today, just another junky barricade using some parts you've already seen. There is a super awesome modelling bit from RSJake in there though!

Anyone played any other zombie rules? I've heard good things about Akula's free AR:SE rules () - will have to try them out at some point!

@Skalk - Oooh, thanks! Just noticed the little PM icon - will have to check now

@Dave & RW - Cheers, guys! They start out as 2 or 3" squares cut from a regular plastic bin bag. I then make a (very) small pile in the centre of offcuts of plastic sprue, shavings from mouldlines or left over GS, junk I've saved in a little tray while making other things. I then put a little dollop of PVA glue on top of it all - just a small amount, or it'll squeeze out of the bag when you try to close it. Final step is to tie it shut with twine, and hit that with Devlan mud. With the glue in there, you can squish it into the flattened shapes binbags actually take, and it'll eventually set that way. I saw someone else do something similar online quite a while ago (really wish I could remember who, they deserve the credit!), so it's not the most original idea Hope it's useful to you though - it's a great little technique!

EDIT: Whoops, what an uninspiring 1000th post! I'm in the middle of packing up all my gear for the move, so no updates, I'm afraid. Hopefully some time next week I'll have everything out again, in my new castle-adjacent flat!

DOUBLE EDIT: Here's the rules Skalk PMed me - thanks a lot for these, man! They look really interesting - a bit of a larger scale than the game I played, but I think they should work well! I recognise a fair bit of Necro in the inspiration, which is never a bad thing.

Zombie Outbreak!

Imperial Forces
2 PDF forces consisting of 10 men (1 Squad Leader, 1 Radioman, 8 Troopers). Standard issue for all members of squad is Lasgun, Frag Grenades, and Flak Armor. 1 Trooper can be given a Flamer or Grenade Launcher which replaces his Lasgun. Squad Leader carries Bolt Pistol and Chainsword.

2d6+2 Hivers. Each Hiver is equipped individually. Roll 2d6 on table below and find appropriate model to represent. All models are assumed to have a single CC weapon (knife, sap, etc) even if not shown on model. If no model is available for the weapon rolled, Zombie player gets to choose armament.

2- Stub Pistol
3- Laspistol
4- Bolt Pistol
5- Plasma Pistol
6- Autogun and Frag grenades
7- Lasgun and Frag grenades
8- Shotgun
9- Special Weapon
10- Heavy Weapon
11- Player’s Choice of Special or Heavy list
12- Player’s Choice of any weapon on list

Special Weapon List (roll d6)
1- Flamer
2- Plasma Rifle
3- Grenade Launcher
4- Boltgun
5- Combat Shotgun (1 Sustained Fire die, may ignore and reroll first Jam)
6- Player’s Choice

Heavy Weapon List (roll d6)
1- Heavy Stubber
2- Autocannon
3- Heavy Bolter
4- Heavy Plasma
5- Missile Launcher
6- Player’s Choice

Setup:

Standard Necromunda or 40K terrain. Must have one building designated as a Trading Post.

Zombies have 4 access points that are placed first, All access levels must be on ground level. Zombie player places first access, then Imperial player. Process repeats until all access points are placed. Access points cannot be within 12 inches of each other and cannot be placed within 12 inches of the Trading Post..

Imperial forces set up second. Imperial forces have the following restrictions:

- Hivers always start within the Trading Post deployment zone (any location within 6 inches of the main Trading Post building, must be minimum 12 inches from any Zombie access point).
- PDF can deploy anywhere on the table on any platform level that is at least 12 inches away from nearest Zombie access point.

Zombie Access Point special rules- At the beginning of each Zombie turn roll 2d6 at each access point. That number of Zombies enter the board from that access point and can be placed up to 4 inches away from the access point. Zombies that are already on the board move as normal.

The access points are decayed and unstable. Hordes of Zombies climbing out of them may cause them to collapse. Any time an Access Point roll of 2d6 equals 8 or more roll on table below:

1-3 Access point vibrates but is unchanged.
4- Some Zombies could not make it through. Remove d3+1 Zombies from roll
5- More Zombies could not make it through. Remove d6+1 Zombies from roll
6- Entry point collapses and is destroyed, no more Zombies deploy from this point again.

Special Rules:
Zombies move 4 inches (instead of 2D6) for regular move and 8 inches for the “Zombie Lunge” on a charge. This change is for ease of game play. Zombies may only move over 4 inches if a charge is declared and the move will put them into CC.

PDF and Hivers move 4 inches and can still shoot (except Heavy Weapons which must remain stationary to shoot. Pivoting in place does not count as movement). Any movement of 5 inches of more is considered running and model cannot shoot.

PDF models act as a single unit and all actions are considered squad actions. Hiver models are individual and can act independently of each other.

Models with pistols may use that weapon in CC instead of hand weapon and all wound rolls are based on the ST of the pistol.

Zombies have no save other than FNP on a 4+. This save does not apply to the following:
- “To Hit” rolls of a natural 6 Shooting phase (considered a head shot)
- Wounds taken in CC
- Wounds taken from Blast templates
- Wounds taken from any Heavy Weapon

Zombies will always move toward the nearest living target. Imperial forces that win combat and have no Zombies in base contact at the end of CC may take a d6 followup move.

Reenforcements

Imperial-
At the end of any Zombie turn, before Imperial movement, if the total number of Zombies on the board is equal to or greater than double strength of the Imperial forces, reinforcements may be called for as follows:

“Central, we need backup NOW!”- PDF must have a Radioman to call for reinforcements. A roll of 6 on d6 will result in a new 10 man squad arriving on table edge at beginning of next turn as follows:

1- 4 table edge as agreed on (numbered 1-4)
5- Zombie player choice
6- Imperial player choice

“Go get help!”- Hivers may remove 1 model within 12” of any table edge and roll a d6. On a roll of 5 or 6 the same model returns and brings d6 new Hivers with them that deploy this turn. All new Hivers arriving on board in this manner arrive on the Trading Post side of board and are armed with Autoguns or Stub / Autopistol (player’s choice). If a 1-4 is rolled the model removed does not return and is counted as a casualty.

Zombie-
At the end of any CC phase roll a D6 for any Imperial models wounded. On a roll of 6 the model has risen as a Zombie. Add 1 new Zombie model for each Imperial model ‘turned’. Zombie model must be placed within 3” of where Imperial model fell.

Victory Conditions:

There is no turn limit. Victory conditions are as follows:

Imperium: Destroy all entry points and remove all zombies from table. An entry point is automatically destroyed at the end of any Imperial turn if an Imperial model is in base contact with it. If Imperial models are in CC w/ Zombies at the time, reduce Imperial attacks by 1 as that model is busy destroying the entry point.

Plague Zombies- Kill all Imperial forces and Hivers

STATS

The Hivers:
M WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
4 3 3 3 3 1 3 1 7 _

The PDF:
M WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
4 3 3 3 3 1 3 1 (2*) 7 (8*) 6+
* = Squad Leader

The Zombies:
M WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
3 2 0 3 3 1 1 1 5 special

I'll let you know what happens if I try them out!

I forgot to clarify in the scenario that Zombies models within 2" of each other are considered to be in coherency for the purposes of shooting, so if the PDF opens up they aren't wasting 10 shots on 1 model. Same goes for Hivers w/ sustained fire HW.

Wow... graduating... moving adjacent to a castle... (high tower?)... and a zombie scenario??

Is there anything you did NOT do this past week, Scarp? Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Vit and I might be borrowing some concepts for our campaign... not quite zombies. But I like the way yours works... especially the cone vision and random stumble. The 3++... not so much. Can't see them withstanding a mini-sun from a heavy plasma cannon shot... but still, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Congrats again on your graduation, moving to the noble-sector, and the game! As always, looking forward to more!

Alright guys, sorry for the absence! Moving flats is a killer and we're only just getting internet sorted...

@Remi - Thanks a lot, man! We are indeed adjacent to high society, but not quite in it yet - flat's up about 6 flights of stairs with no lift, which keeps the price down to a pretty reasonable rate One hell of a location though - the street I live on stretches between this:

And this:

And looks like this:

this is the view out of my girlfriend's window:

You'd normally be able to see the castle out of my window, but they have seats up for the Tattoo for the next month or so, ruining my bragging rights

Glad you like the rules! They're a mishmash of pre-existing things rather than completely my own, and the invuln is hardly ideal. We were dealing with flamers, bolters and shotguns though, so it seemed to fit the bill alright.

@MauS - Thanks for the heads up, that's awesome! I haven't been on Dakka too much over the last few weeks, so haven't had a chance to check. Will give the new stuff a look as soon as i can though - exciting!

@Peter - Thank you so much for the kind words, and the videos! I'm still super excited to see where you go with your scavvies - the zombies are a fun part of every gang. The multiple party poppers were fairly ace, the maggoty cheese and goat guts... less so

I've got my desk all set up now:

and, inspired by Skalk, I've been experimenting with salt and hairspray weathering!
These are some of my bulkheads after weathering with a sponge, some oils and a little weathering powder plus the salt application:

And here are a few after the process (you really need to zoom on the image for a decent effect):

Lots to learn, but I think they turned out ok for a first try! Ideally I'd be using a brighter and more contrasting colour, but I needed some more reds to match a few I already have. I've got a light blue rattlecan for the next batch though.

Hope you like them! Feels good to be back - I dont start my job until a week on Tuesday and the mandatory trips to Costco and Ikea are out the way, so I've now some free time to play around with!

First of I thought you had moved into a church when I saw the picture LOL then I looked further down and saw you had moved into the public convenience LMAO

Bragging rights are on hold for know, but you should see the fire works well from there can you untidy the work space as the misses is moaning at me Can you guess why

The effects look great but you need to zoom in to really see how good they are, the red does seem to grab your attention from the effect a bit.

However the picture does not do it justice, when you zoom in the effect stands out nicely and works well with the red, so zoom in people

What a cool place to live, just far enough away from the annoying ghost walks as well by the looks of it.

Do your bulkheads have some white residue on them still (mainly the one bottom left?) You can wash this off with water, it will totally dissolve the salt and make it look a bit neater compared to chipping it off. It looks great on the top left one especially, I think you've done it perfectly but you could use some more salt next time, can never have enough rust.

In all honesty, take Edinburgh, replace the population with that of Govan, install a fascist government and a few aquilas and hey presto! Stock City of the Imperium. The only reason I don't want to live there is too many old acquaintances from school.

Oh, and Scarp, get yerself to the Forest Cafe (if it's still open) for some interesting gigs, events and people.

@LDD - It's a cushty public restroom though! Those steps lead down here:

Towards grassmarket and tourist bloody central. No worries on the desk - it looks pretty at the moment cause it's a brand new ikea desk and I literally just moved in. It'll be strewn with bitz and aborted projects soon enough. Glad you like the paint flaking! Red is probably the worst choice for it, but it was really the only colour primer rattlecan I had. I've rectified that now, and the next batch will be a nice contrasting blue

@Bruticus - Thanks! I still get a fair few of the ghost walks, and those guys who dress up in Braveheart / invisible man costumes and want money for it. I don't mind them yet though. Thanks for the tip on the salt scale - I hadn't actually noticed that, and it came off nicely with another warm wash. Fun technique, overall!

@RW - Thanks, Rogue! I've lived in London or Edinburgh my whole life, and I find it really hard to imagine a cityscape where the oldest building is only around 200 years old - they're just so ingrained here. I have a plan to go take some tourist shots of all the gothic buildings in Edinburgh at some point over the next few days, and post em up for you lot. No end of inspiration, I reckon

@Dave - Cheers, man, I'm really pleased with them. You'd be surprised about the coat thing - we're currently having the worst Summer since I can remember. It's never great in Scotland, but the temperatures been struggling to break 15C, and it's been pissing rain almost every day. Supposed to get brighter soon though!

@Skalk - A nice public restroom

@Vik - Nope, that was all Dakka. You weirdos, you

@Neil - Thanks so much! My new flat gets a lot more light than the old one, just cause it's so high up if nothing else. Bruticus is right too though - it's a lot greyer than previous years...

@Cap'n R - You're from Edinburgh?! You're kidding, man, I've been here for 5 years! When did you leave? I've only moved area, not city - was over on Montague St, in Newington before, just moved to the Royal Mile. Goddamn, we've probably missed a few opportunities. I'd deffo be up for some games / drinks when you're back around, and I could always use more gaming contacts if you know anyone round here - I've still nver really found a necro game in Edinburgh Cheers for the kind words!

@Remi - Thanks, man! I'm going to get you some more shots today or tomorrow - it never occurred to me that people might not have easy access to reference shots for stonework and that. You can't throw a rock in Edinburgh without hitting another, weathered rock Hope they'll help!

@lonedrow - Thanks a lot buddy! I'll see if I can get a few more shots for you

Update today is a finished Sidekick. couldn't get a decent shot of his face for some reason, but I'm pleased with the woodgrain and the neckerchief. Hope you like him, and I'd love any input - it's been a while since I got anything painted...

Also! Be sure to check out Nathanie's plog - (s?)he has some great Necro models using vostroyans and vraksians at the bottom of the page, and for some reason isn't getting any attention from the usual crowd - let's make that right!

Yes, always liked this conversion and it has just got better the handkerchief is a nice touch indeed.

The surroundings are a blessing especially for influence in this hobby, but what the hell is an invisible man costume I hope it's not what I think

Thanks, Scarp! I'd really appreciate it!

As to your model- yea, you nailed the woodgrain there! I also notice that your models are a mid-ground between hyper-dynamic and totally static. They're moving, but they're not in the heat, but simply "moving". Don't know how to put that better, but it's both strange and refreshing.

Finally, I also like the weapon for some odd reason. It's a shotgun, yes? With a really hole-y barrel... these two should never be mixed together in my head(especially with pellet/scattershot)... but I find myself strangely attracted to that toy he's carrying.

Hey scarper,,

the woodstock on sidekick is brilliant mate .. i think a few buttons on his mack that match his books would add some variation to the coat.. but he is lovely the neckerchief and glasses look cool.

I really like the vented heat shield on the shotgun barrel! And the wooden stock is sick! That's a huge amount of detail on somehting so small! Also like the '3-day beard'. Really impressive all around. You're doing a great job w/ this project and I'm glad you've stuck with it. The fluff is very interesting and the miniatures really help the story come alive. x10

Alright, guys! Had to head onto Prince's Street to sort some bank stuff with Hannah today, and I thought I'd take a few shots of some gothicy kind of stuff while I was out. Nothing too special, just a few buildings on the way. Hope some of it's useful / interesting / inspiring!

The Walter Scott Monument

Assembly, a uni building / venue during the Fringe

A view down George Street - I imagine the statue would be a little taller if this was an Imperial city

Views off South Bridge:

Carlton Hill

and the view towards the castle. You can just make out the Assembly building on the far right of the pic.

Just some reference for all the Edinburgh chat of late!

@RW - Thanks a lot! I've been told I'm too self-deprecating with my modelly stuff, so I'm trying to focus on bits I like when I'm done with something - really glad you like it

@LDD - The invisible man is this guy:
Spoiler:

I really like him! Never seen anyone do something similar, and it's fun seeing all the double takes. Should probably have been more careful in my choice of words though! Thanks a lot for the compliment.

@Vik - He is a little more saturated than my usual fare, isn't he? Must just be feeling summery Really glad you like him!

@Remi - I also grabbed you some stone texture shots while I was out! I tried to get you a lot of different types, and some with runoff / weathering. Hope they're useful!
Spoiler:

Thanks so much for your kind words! The QA guys are supposed to be in the aftermath of a skirmish - they're picking through wreckage, looking out for reprisals and planning their next move! I felt like doing something a little different to my usual 'in the thick of it' stuff, and it's been really fun to do!
His weapon is a bit odd - the heat dissipation barrel bit doesn't really go with the shell, like you mentioned. Maybe it's been reassembled a few times? Or he just likes the scatter to be really wide So glad you like it though!

@Neil - Thank you, man, that's really kind. Good call on the buttons too - may have to whip out some plasticard and see what I can do!

@Skalk - Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! I've been phasing in and out with little other mini projects like the zombies, but it's a broad theme and quite easy to stick to (i.e. easy to shoehorn other things into ). I'm so pleased you like his shotgun, the woodgrain was a new experience!

@Migsula - Thank you so much! Huge compliment.

@Dave - Cheers, Dave, that's really kind!

Been away/moving for a bit and the internet man came today but no bed yet

Glad you liked the party poppers and cheese

Good updates while I've been away. Nice necro bulkheads, have you considered a wash of Dev Mud (or whatever it is called now) to tone the red down if you think it is a little bright? The salt effect really looks good and realistic

Sidekick looks good I like the brown of his clothing and the wood too.

@Dave - I'd be happy to! It's really not that complicated, so I'll see if I can take a few shots Glad you like it!

@RW - It's a pretty awesome city Dunno if all my showing off gave it away, but I'm pretty proud of it!

@Peter - Glad to see you're getting the important stuff sorted first Moving house is a serious chore - hope you get everything sorted soon and all the best in the new place! Cheers for the kind words too, I will have to try out the dev mud to dull it down a little. My bottle is nearly empty now, not looking forward to the new GW ones...

@Vik - It's the fringe festival now - August is basically a huge sponsored event! Shame I'm working for most of it

Today's update is Ralston (almost) done. I'm out of matte varnish, so I can't do any gloss or blood effects until I get more, and can't attach him to the base yet either, but he's most of the way there now. His right eye got obliterated a bit by the photo, but honestly is okay in real life. Not sure what happened! Hope you like anyway.

Also! I'm after some Krylon Matte Spray, but the only store I know that stocks it has shut down, and it doesn't seem to exist anywhere else in the UK D: If any of you lot over the pond wouldn't mind buying me a few cans and mailing it (I will happily reimburse via PayPal for the cost and the postage!), I'd really, really appreciate it... I'd even maybe do some kind of small commissiony thing in gratitude? Plus we would be official best friends forever, which is the most valuable reward of all. Please PM me if you can!

Would love any comments or criticism, and thanks again for all the interest!

Dam you Vik beat me to both of those the jacket tied around the waist, a good way of blending that dam jacket skirt on those cadian legs.

The jacket is so Logan's I was like I am sure I know it from some where and then it clicked, I was rushing down to post and then saw smart ass Vik had beat me to both.

That guy is great, I like his astonished expression which is exaggerated by the way he has moved his sunglasses out of the way to get a closer look, what is it he is inspecting? The way you have converted the cadian skirt to look like he has tied up his coveralls is great.

The Devlan mud replacement (Agrax Earthshade) is not really a direct replacement I found, it's much lighter. I've heard that The Army Painter Warpaints Strong Tone Ink is almost an exact match so I've ordered a bottle of that to test.

I am pretty sure it is illegal to post aerosols internationally as they might explode. However it is on eBay with international postage so maybe just don't tell them that.

@Dave - Ahh, that might be why it's so hard to find! Thanks anyway, I appreciate it!

@Vik - It is indeed Logan's jacket! Not an intentional homage, but a particularly cool jacket that came up while I was doing some reference searching. Didn't even realise it was wolverine until I was halfway through painting! Krylon Matte is a dullspray matte varnish. I don't think it's anything particularly special, but it has worked well for me, and I've had bad experience with other brands in the past. Nothing like ruining hours upon hours of work with a gak rattlecan... Thanks for the kind words again - I seem to be in a bit of a brighter phase in my painting atm

@LDD - Hahaha, great minds think alike and all that I guess Glad you enjoy the knotted jumpsuit - it was really just a getaround to allow me to use more colours and interesting clothing after I cornered myself with the mandatory jumpsuits thing. Thanks a lot for the compliments, and the link too. I ordered the last can one of those stockists was carrying, and it's currently winging its way across the pond!

@Bruticus - Thanks Bruticus! It's actually an envelope: can't see to well in the shot, but I shadowed the area under the flap and highlighted the part above. It's quite a find, and the QA getting their hands on this particular missive is the start of a campaign I'm writing.
I was so surprised they changed their line of washes - GW paints have a rather patchy reputation, but their washes are pretty much universally recognised as stellar. Admittedly I haven't tried any of the new ones yet and for all I know they could be ace too, but it just seems like an 'if it ain't broke' kind of moment... Cheers for the tips on Earthshade though - I was considering picking up a pot, and may have to think again now.

@Rogue - You could be right, he is a little pale. I'm trying to get a mix of skin colours in the gang, but he could probably do with some more shadowing.

@Remi - Much appreciated, man! And with all your fantastic fluff and sculpting I'm feeling a little jealous myself, so we can just call it even

@Peter - I bought in a fair few colours (unknowingly!) just before the switchover, so it may be a while before I try them out. Looking forward to it though - change isn't always bad!

Just a bit of an "I'm still alive!" post. I'm playing around with a few Pegasus platformer kits off eBay, as well as experimenting with plaster with a few Hirst Arts kits. Nothing too exciting to show yet, I'm afraid! Shadowing week has been a bit of a killer and I'm working 12 and a half hour night shifts from Tuesday in a hospital about an hour from my house, so progress might still be a little slow, but I'll get some pics up as soon as I can. Need to pull an all nighter tomorrow to get used to sleeping during the day, so maybe a few things then!

In the mean time, I thought I'd explain a little about the board I'm working on now that I have a little more space. It's based off The Creek, a dome I described in a fluff piece a few months back:
Spoiler:
Irradiated dust and surface dirt howled with the wind through the rent in the dome roof, pooling and swirling in vast dunes around the rusted metalwork of the Creek. The single spar of cold sunlight seemed alien here, throwing long shadows from ancient archways and spotlighting the thick powder that hovered in the air. It was the first time the dome had been exposed to the surface for probably hundreds of years, but Leeson’s Run had brought a lot of the structure down with it as it collapsed. They’d been lucky not to be buried alive. The sound and fury of Caitiff’s surface forcing itself upon the dome made the fragility of the place more palpable - already the fearsome winds were making their mark on the virgin buildings of the Creek. It would not be long before the antique structures were just more sand-eroded ruins, walls carved smooth and razor thin. Crow sighed.

Even through the harsh filter of her goggles and the harsher filter of nearly half a millennium, the beauty the Creek had once possessed was unmistakeable. Hundreds of years ago it would have been an exclusive suburb, ornate and ornamental, a fashionable address for the upper echelons of pre-Imperial society. Permeated throughout with placid canalways, veins running from what was now the Grey Sea, the water proved a genteel and anachronistic means of transport – a serf at the helm, a nobleman reclining. The waterways were once lined with self-commissioned statues of great statesmen, their names now long-forgotten. If you searched hard enough, fragments of these illustrious men could still be found in the detritus that carpeted their former homes. Jutting spars of marble, pockmarked and streaked with runoff, are now the only hints of the dome’s former grandeur: it’s noble purpose did not last. As the hive grew, so too did the expectations of its richer denizens. Was it not right for the upper classes to be on top of the pile, both figuratively and literally?
The Creek had fallen from fashion as one by one its residents moved up in the world. Their homes, though, found new owners. A hive is a living thing – the flow of people ebbs and changes, but an empty chamber will soon be filled. The ready access to a renewing supply of water was not ignored - the newly vacated Creek quickly developed into a hub of industry, with pipelines, walkways and twisted metal production lines snaking round and through the existing buildings. Manufactorums need vast resources and produce plentiful waste, and the beauty of the dome did not stand long against these twin assaults: Lavish but crumbling mansions were gutted and converted to worker’s hab blocks and pumping stations, ornamental architecture demolished to make space for larger vehicles. The canals became putrid lakes of brackish water, filled with both the human waste of the workers and the industrial run-off of the factories. Fumes filled the Creek, rising through cracks like steam from a sewer to taint the domes above. But even this period could not last. With the Skew’s inexorable growth, hivequakes, floods and tsunamis became more and more frequent, interrupting productivity in the lower levels. Such environmental disasters had been common for years, of course – a few thousand workers killed here and there did little to dent production. But these larger events threatened the buildings themselves, and with the infrastructure of manufacture endangered, the industrialists moved on.
By the time Easthollow fell, the Creek was nothing but a den of cutthroats, occupied only by gangbangers; criminals and mutants unable to live in civilised society. But for the hundreds of millions of refugees seeking shelter in the hives from the toxic surface, little option remained. Living conditions were squalid and overcrowded in the Spire even before the Easthollow disaster, with rival factions warring over the most basic spaces to live. Where else but the largely abandoned underhive was there for the new arrivals to call their own? Compared with the alternative, even a life among the outcasts did not seem such a daunting prospect. Shanties and shacks built from corrugated metal and scavenged wood sprang up in their hundreds, their ramshackle facades adding further incongruence to the opulence and industry of the Creek. When conflict over territory escalated, even the waterways were utilised, with crookedly inter-connected archipelagos floating tentatively in the waste. A new economy of scavenged and stolen goods emerged, and for a few months, the Creek became, once again, a home to hundreds.
The Creek today was abandoned. In the months that followed the Easthollow disaster, the air on the surface cleared – It would never be safe again, and even now Crow was sure they were dying a little with each breath they took, but it was, at least, breathable once again. Over time, people began to venture back into Skew State, forming new communities, and reconnecting with those who had found shelter in the open. The overcrowding of the hive eased off, to a degree. But unknown to those that stayed, the air was filtered by moving water on the surface, and it became clearer at the exact rate that the ocean took up its poisons. The floating citizens of the Creek, those who had built their own shelter even on the turbulent effluent that made up what was once the canalways, were the first to fall sick. Those that stayed were not far behind them. From the day the first refugee died from contact with the tainted water, it was less than a month before, for the first time in its history, the dome stood empty.

It was in this historical water, surrounded in equal parts by riches and poverty, that Riff had drowned.

I've got some pretty ambitious ideas for multiple sections on different levels of insulation foam (concrete), with platforms and makeshift walkways between different floors of the buildings on different levels, with dried canals between them. Currently I'm working on suspended platforms and ruined archipelagos in the canal section. I'm going for some corroded, algae strewn pillars, with rusty metalwork and signs of human habitation, like a floating, industrial shanty town. Hard to describe, but hopefully pics will show more soon! Better water quality than I'll be using, obviously, but I'm hoping to have this kind of weathering and growth on the pillars:

Though it will be metal instead of wood.

Apologies if this isn't the most clear, just wanted to get some ideas down!

I mentioned this to Neil but there is a whole set of rules for boats in Necromunda on Anthony Case's site - if you have a working canal network instead of dried up ones you could have a boat or two. I've always liked the idea of using vehicles in Necromunda, AC has basically just adapted the Ash Waste rules (which are themselves just adapted Gorkamorka rules). I even bought a couple of motorbikes for my Goliaths although they got shelved. Not sure what pitslaves would drive...

By the way the new GW washes are all great as far as I have seen, but Agrax is significantly lighter. It still has it's uses.

Id say layers of Ca glue with medium coarse sand to make the "encrustations".

if you DID decide to have he remains of a "wood" piling anywhere Id recommend chunks of dowel that you beat up a bit with a hammer (to fray the tops,) and a rough rock (like the "broken" face of a lump of granite) thumping the sides( to add irregularity to the vertical contour) with a finisher of a wire brush (to bring out the inherent grain)

I'll see if I can scare up some contacts and pm you with info. I suppose I've only come to know of you in the last year or so, so it's no surprise I hadn't made the connection - but I'll definitely stop by next April :-)

@Bruticus - That is a good tip! I've used one or two of the rules from there before, in particular the vehicles, but I was a little disappointed - you need to spread scenery out a lot more to make them feasible, which puts footsoldiers at a disadvantage. I'd forgotten the boats though - might have to change a few plans.

@Rogue - Cheers, man! Hope you like it when it's done

@Galorn - Thanks a lot for the advice! Love the idea with the dowel and the hammer in particular, sounds like it would come out great, and fun to do too!

@Capn R - I'd really appreciate that, and it would be great to meet in person too! Ralston's holding a letter - it's important in the background for a campaign I'm writing.

@Bjorn - Great to see you back, man! Sorry to disappoint on my fake looking photos though

In other news, I survived my first week of night shifts! Due to a weird rolling rota, I now have my week of annual leave (in week 2!), so here's the first of hopefully a fair few terrain updates over the next few days. I thought I'd show you something simple first - It's a couple of CoD kits I rescued off eBay, completely dissambled, scraped all the wood glue(!?) from and reassembled. Looks like a bit of a waster nest set up in there... Hope you like!

Retractable entrance, bedding, lookout post, a few supplies and even a drinks machine - looks like someone's made themselves a pretty nice den!
Obviously this is very early WiP - lots of rubble and pipework to come on the base. Just wanted to get something up. Most of my other terrain in the pipeline is non-GW, so hopefully something a bit more interesting soon

That is looking like a right tramp den, you just need a barrel with some wood burning in it and they have all the needed amenities

Cant wait to see this with a slap of paint and some more rubble added, maybe a chair or small table added to the look out post would look good.

@RW - The bed and drink machine are from Black Cat Bases - great products and really cheap, but be prepared to fill a few air bubbles

@LDD - Good call! Some scattered broken furniture would fit well, will have to see what I can do. Thanks for the tip!

@Vik - Cheers man, hope you like what I'm working on with the cookie stuff.

EDIT: Realise that almost all the guys who read this are =L=, but on the offchance anyone hasn't seen it yet, go check out Vik's terrain comp! The challenge is to use all of the parts that come with a packet of biscuits to make some terrain - there are some great ideas in there, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Here are a few teasers of mine so far:

Get on over there!

Thanks a ton guys, really appreciate the kind words, and the votes of confidence! Hope I can get it up to standard

A bit more of an in depth view today! The setting I'm going for is a storage centre / pipeline control platform on a floating industrial platform. It's fallen a long way into disrepair, and may have picked up a squatter or two over time! Still very WiP, but here's how my cookie terrain is looking right now:

I'm planning on using it for necro terrain, so single models can pass behind where Scratch is standing to utilise the pipes for cover, or climb up on top of the storage building for a better, though more exposed view. The whole lot will be floating in a swampy sump when I'm done!

Here's what I still need to do before painting:

A - A rubber band fan belt for the generator. Is it clear how it's supposed to work? I didn't think wind would be too reliable a resource in some areas of the hive, and this seemed to me like a fairly reliable power siphon

B - A proper fitting for attaching the water wheel to the platform - it's just tacked in place for now so that I can paint it seperately.

C - Tons of gap filling - I've left sorting the edges til last because I wasn't sure where i'd be attaching platforms until recently!

D - Entrance walkway

E - Basing! Hopefully a sump full of detritus in the style of Neil's recent amazing work, though it sounds like it'll take some doing...

F - A tatty awning over the doorway - bet you thought I'd forgotten the plastic, eh, Vik?

G - Cabling to attach the generator to the storage centre. Gotta do something with all that power!

And finally, a little more progress on a den for the owner's pet!

So lots still to do in my few days off, but I hope you like it now that you can see a little more clearly where I'm going!

hey scarper... i am so glad you joined the comp... that truly seems to have you inspired quite a lot!!! it looks totally awesome... and i mean it...

the amount of detail... and most specially the tubes/pipes... simply stunning.... if you can pull off the base to look a bit like neils swap/sewer big terrain... the competition gets quite hard !!!

also i like the combo of generator/ turbine the addition of the rubberband will be sight for sore eyes!

Falling water can easily be created by using kids hobby glue, the stuff thyey use in schools... Its a bit thick, and it dries out bubbly-transparant. when it is semi-dry you can use whatever tools you like to pull it apart, stretch it, shape it, whatever. Build it up in layers, and you can make waterfalls out of the stuff even. Or you use woodland scenics waterfall effects...

Wow, thanks so much for the response, everyone!

@LDD - Your cookies didn't come with piping?! How on earth do you pump milk and chocolate sauce onto them?! You Southerners with your crazy cookies I'm glad you like, and no bloody giving up!

@Vik - Thanks a ton man, I really appreciate that! I've been meaning to do something like this for a while, and your contest just tipped me off the edge, so thank you. And I do not envy you for having to make the decisions at all, looking at the quality of entry that's popped up over the last few days on the main thread...

@Peter - Thank you! The cookies were indeed delicious, the plastic less so. I'm really glad you feel like its coming together!

@Neil - Thanks, man! You know I still need to watch that movie? I've heard some... mixed... reviews, but I feel like it would be a great source of inspiration if nothing else. Onto the to-do list!
Thanks again for the sump recipe too - it's a lot of fun to play with!

@Rogue - Having seen the world you built for the Himlen boys, I've got no doubt that you do! Thanks a ton for the compliment, anyway

@The Good Green - Thank you! It is kind of a classic in terrain making, isn't it? That, bean cans and pringle tubes.

@Rawson - Thanks so much! Hope I can keep it together until the end of the comp!

@Weety - With extreme difficulty? I'm still working on sorting that bit out

@MauS - That is a fantastic tip, thank you! I'll have to see what I can do with it when I eventually get round to doing the water. Will probs have to leave that till after painting though.

Sort of relevant update! Neil very kindly gave me the recipe for his awesome sump, and I've been trying to do something similar. This is a test piece - not the base that my terrain will go on, but a test ground that will do as a mini pool for some later terrain. I've got the first few layers down (still 3 or 4 to go!). Hope you like!

Scarper, definately wait till after painting before adding the water, and just in case, make sure you seal the paint with a layer or two of Pledge wood floor polish. That way the paint does not copme into direct contact with the water, and it will not absorb color you dont want in it... I learned this the hard way once... Got me a big scare when my vietnamese PT boat suddenly turned my murky muddy vietnam river PT boat grey :S

I always seal stuff with pledge. It gives a nice shiny layer thats ideal to add washes to, and after a layer of matte varnish the shinyness is gone.

Works great too if you add a bit before decalling, that way your decals will never silver...

I use Pledge Vinyl floor polish with Future, it's semi-gloss where the wood floor stuff has a bit more gloss to it. Yes no one should EVER fear gloss coats, they are your friend.

Wonderful stuff Scarp!

SIdekick and Ralston were great, the woodgrain and the colour palette looking fantastic.

Nice terrain, matress and couch were superb. And the cookie-sump-a-rama is crazy cool man

I've seen white parcel string used as falling water effects, but I suspect it's not easy to get right as I've seen a few really good examples, and lots of not very good examples I think it basically involves teasing out the strands of string and giving it a good few coats of your chosen 'water effects'. If you inserted a bit of fine wire at one end you could shape the initial curve....

I'm a fan of Johnson Wax Klear, which was really hard to get hold off for a while, until I discovered that it had become Pledge with Future Although I've started to see Klear around again now.

I am still alive! Just coming to the end of a 12 day block of 12 and a half hour shifts, and have had almost no time off. Monday at 8am brings a four day 'rest period', though, so hopefully some modelling time in there if I'm not too exhausted!

Some long overdue replies:
@Vik - thanks so much! It was Neil's recipe that did all the work, I was just following along. Love the sump effect though!

@RW - Thanks!

@Ghosty - Cheers! As PDH pointed out, you can find it on Neil's blog

@Bruticus - Thanks! The pipes are plaster casts from a Hirst Arts mould.

@Dave and MauS - Thank you for the tips!

@Monkey - Thank you so much for the kind words! I will have to try out the tip with the water when I get a little more time - sound like it would be a lot of fun to work with though

@Galorn - Thanks a ton!

@LDD - I like the belt too! It was really easy to do in the end - just a rubber band, really.

@Peter - Thanks a bunch, man, that's really kind to say. I'm so glad you like it!

@Madmarty - Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make.

@Neil - Thanks again, man, I really appreciate that - I think ripping off your water effects was the final touch!

@Lonedrow - Thanks! I've got big plans for a whole system of interconnected floating platforms - we'll see how likely thjat is to happen in the long run

Today's update is some 'not dead' work - just quick things I've managed to bash out between shifts.

First up is a quickly painted NPC -

Unfortunately his matte varnish finish frosted, so I had to gloss varnish over the top to get rid of it. I've done a few more coats of matte now, but can't get rid of that horrible sheen. Don't supposed anyone has any suggestions?

I've been trying to change up an escher to lose the tights and spandex theme and dress a little more normally - hopefully it's working!

And finally I've been practicing my GS skills with some simple reposes and clothing / features for some zombicide zombies. Early work, but good practice on models I have a hundred of that don't really get close inspection!

Hopeyou like. Sorry about the rushed nature of this, but I'm on again at 8 tonight, and I have to go! All the best, and please let me know what you reckon

Hmm, interesting issue with the varnish you have there Scarp. That's happened a couple of times to me and just a gloss followed by matte worked, I'd say there's something iffy with your matte if it's atill leaving that sheen. Maybe just re-base so he looks like he's emerging from a lake

Skirt and beret combo looks alright

Good use of the horde for practice there

Yes, the girl sculpt looks great love it great use of a decent mini and improving it

As for the varnish I would try an alternative matte, I have had the same issue glossed it and then re matte and its worked, maybe that or the paint is having some kind of reaction with the varnish.

Ah well, best to get more than one next time as an insurance! I'm just glad it was a fairly quick paintjob that got frosted...

Speaking of quick paint jobs, here's the first few zombies! Girl on the left obvs needs a base, but all in time.

I realise these are a little outside my usual, but I figured they fit post-apoc, and a lot of my gangers could be near future anyway, so it still counts!

Hope you enjoy anyway. These are quick and fun to paint, and good practice for new GS / painting techniques, so expect to maybe see a few of them between my other projects. Please let me know what you think!

@monkeytroll - I actually needed his legs for another conversion - waste not want not! I'm trying to paint up a few of them with minimum conversion ATM, filling out the ranks a bit and forcing myself to paint. It's going okay! And your builder gent has quite the headwound, should have worn a helmet

@peter - thanks a ton! Glad he's cheering someone up

@vik - thanks a lot! He does indeed - I was experimenting with different shades of tamiya red, it's such a great paint. More to come when my annual leave finally rolls around!

Scarp! Loving the zombies man. Have you ever come across the awesome White Dwarf article from back when they published Necromunda stuff (mid-90's) giving a few B-movie scenarios, including zombie attacks and how to play night of the living dead and so on? SO much fun.

I had a game in a campaign where I was facing off against Spyrers, I decided hey, let's try some treacherous conditions, and we got a hive quake. That game my gang bottled from instantly due to casualties, so we decided everyone who'd been taken out by the hive quake had fallen to the bottom of the hive... and woken up surrounded by zombies! Two spyrers, my leader and two troopers, and the WD scenario was really well designed. We teamed up and fought for survival until we found the exit, then the cowardly spyrers fled and my leader was torn to pieces by zombies, giving his life so the others could escape.

A good story, and I know I've got a few necromunda resource websites and pdf's kicking around somewhere, do you want me to hunt it out?

And lastly, doing near-future stuff is half the fun of Necromunda. Satirise your current world, it's a game of B-movie tropes after all. When I lived in Easton, Bristol, I, er, I made a Somali Pirates gang...

@Cap'n R - Thanks a bunch for the kind words!
I actually know the article you mean! If it's the one I'm thinking of, you have several potential exit points, only one of which is valid. You've got to gamble on which of the exits to go for, and zombies spawn every turn, right? I've played that one myself - it had a pretty grisly ending...
Have you seen Yakromunda yet, btw? Well worth signing up - they've got a pretty decent gang management system, but also almost every official piece of necromunda info that's ever been released available as PDFs. It's a goldmine!
Any chance you wouldn't mind posting up your gangs? I'd love to see them, and I can't find anything in your 'created topics' bit

@Skalk - Cheers, man! It was a lot of fun to paint.

Bit closer to my usual today - have spent a lot of my first day off painting up another wastelander!

Ivy was born and raised in the Hole, daughter to an ex-PDF mother and a travelling chem-dealer who probably never knew of her. She had a good upbringing, all things considered. Helped her mother to build shelters for the new settlers in the shanty outside of town, trading her work and expertise for whatever they had picked up in their travels. No great riches, but enough to buy food. Over time, she got good at it - learned a few tricks to gauge the strength of standing structures, got better at scavenging strong materials to build the supports that held a building upright. Rarely had collapses, in the end - learned quickly that if something she had built fell down, she'd starve until enough time had passed for her name to be forgotten.
At 16, madly in love with a local scratcher, Ivy left Hole to travel with him from town to town, where he hoped to find enough clients to hone his trade. She carried with her a pistol stolen from her neighbour, enough food to carry them to Jento, and the marks of her partner's endless practice on her arms.

Fairly simple conversion, but hopefully a little removed from the vaguely S&M vanilla eschers. I was going for a slightly restricted palate, and a 'pale and interesting' skin tone, both of which are new to me. I hope you like her - please let me know what you reckon!

Vernon is well liked in Roth. One of the oldest surviving men in the settlement, he works hard for the community. A man who knows the difference between a corroded energy cell and one that has seen some love, he has developed a reputation among the scavengers of Crockfall as a fair and reasonable tradesman. He spends time with the local children, teaching what he can about maintaining the machinery that keeps them alive, and the little history he remembers of the Skew. Vernon has lived in Roth for decades, and he is proud of what it has become. There were so few places in the years following the Evac that were truly safe, and his own family aside, he intends to keep Roth a haven for future generations too. Most people know better than to ask about his military past - there are few on the surface today who like to talk of their old allegiances, and Vernon is no different. The rumours of his youth have largely subsided with time, the tales of assassinations and government contracts mostly dismissed as far-fetched. There are still some who are overcome with curiosity when he is seen leaving the town confines in the early hours of the morning, but to most, it doesn't matter. As long as the bandits steer clear of Roth, then it doesn't matter who Vernon was. The smiling old man can keep his secrets.

Alright, yes, everyone and their dog has done a conversion with this model, but it's possibly my favourite in the whole GW line. Pretty simple changes, but I feel like it might change the feel of the model - I like the 'peering' feel he has, rather than the fairly static starting pose. Hopefully you enjoy him too, and remember that I really appreciate any and all advice!

Hah yeah mine too, it was the first one I bought when I got back into GW although unfortunately my conversion of him got destroyed, I still plan to use him in my next gang. I like what you have done with him, to me it looks like he is both advancing and about to reload or pull a grenade from his belt, all without taking his robo eyes off the target. The former Escher looks good, the eye is particularly well painted.

@Bruticus - That's exactly the pose I was going for, so I'm really glad it comes off that way! What happened to your model? I remember seeing it a while back and thinking it was awesome - he was offhanding a huge kitbashed rifle, right?

@Monkeytroll - Thanks for the kind words! I do like the escher models, I just can't really get the whole leather and studs look to fit with my own gear. Some easy changes and I can hopefully change up a few of her colleagues too.

Yeah this guy who I really liked (and I had actually done a bit more work on, gave him a cowboy hat). When I painted him the paints all reacted badly and turned rubbery and peeled off, not 100% sure why but I had to strip him so of course he fell apart. Remade him into something else instead for my next gang. Bit of a shame though.

Thanks a lot, guys!

Something a little different today - I'm on annual leave at the moment, and ended up going to a local tourist attraction yesterday that Hannah suggested. Thought it could be quite interesting for all the guys doing Fallout stuff. Drive out into the countryside North of Edinburgh for about an hour and a half, and you come to a quaint little farmhouse:

But underneath it is a hidden bunker built in the 1960s to house the local government should Scotland have come under nuclear attack.

There's a long tunnel (kinked, to try and dissipate blast energy) that leads to the entrance, and the audioguide reports that anyone discovering this post-attack would have been shot on sight.

The blast doors at the end weight about a ton and a half each (though no giant vault-style doors!)

Around 300 people would have lived down here, with a 'hot bed' bunk system (there were only 100-odd beds due to space constraints)

And they would have broadcast information and advice to survivors on the surface using equipment like this:

There was also a large command centre from which fallout and any impacts would be tracked

And a few guard posts outside the bunker doors.

The generator and air filtration systems were insanely advanced by '60s standards, and could filter the entire air contents of the bunker 8 times every 15 minutes

There was some entertainment to keep morale up, including two cinema rooms with projectors:

They were showing this series of videos while we were there:

And here's the mess hall where we ate lunch, playing 50s music, no less

Finally, a couple of pics i thought people might be interested in:

And an area of the bunker that was closed, and being used as a store room. You can just see through the thin curtain across it -

And what's that in the middle?

An easter egg?!

Great place to visit, tons of interesting history and a terrifying monument to how seriously the threat of nuclear war was taken. Also good inspiration!

Hope you find something you like

True, everyone and their dog, but I like yours better than most. Because most people simply add details or swap heads, but you changed the general feel of it.

@PDH - Thank you! Great way to pass the commute, isn't it? Even if it's awkward as hell to type anything

@RW - Thanks Rogue! It took a fair bit of playing with, but i liked the way it came out.

Finished the man himself today. I'm satisfied, but a little disappointed. I can't put my finger on it, but his pose seems awkward, and the expression is all wrong. He also needs a fair bit more shading on his skin, and some more work on the map, which he won't be getting any time soon. The whole model was giving me a lot of trouble, and I ruined some things I'd already done with stupid errors because I was rushing - wanted to just finish before I got too frustrated. He's fine, but not really what I pictured, which is a shame. Still, some new techniques learned and a bit more experience, so bonus there

@RW - Thanks, buddy! I know what you mean, this head doesn't look quite as unpleasant as the old one. Seems an odd choice, but it'll fit his character better when I finally get time to finishing writing it, trust me.

@LDD - Thank you! To be honest I'm somewhat limited by my colour pallet - I'm planning on having a few more toned-down ones in there, but people wear bright clothes in real life, so why not? And I won't be able to unsee Mr Haddock now - I think maybe he just got a nickname

@Neil - Thanks a lot, man! Work is kicking my ass at the moment, but I'm still trying to make what time I can for hobbying. Hope everything is good on your end - you've got no shortage of inspiration at the mo judging from your blog...

@Monkeytroll - Wow, that's a blast from the past - haven't done any fisherman's wives in a while now, have I? Nearly stumbled into the beard theme again with Haddock up there though I've got some of Studio Miniatures new plastic Zs coming to my door at some point this week - looking forward to painting some up, but I think their ragged look would be perfect for some wastelanders too! Cheers for the kind words.

@TwoSpartan - Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that. The map was fun to make!

@Dsteingass - Cheers, buddy! He's alright, just not what I had in mind. I'm not overly upset - just happens some times. Thanks for the kind words though - means a lot from yourself!

Thanks a lot for all the kind words, everyone, and I hope you all had a great time celebrating whatever you happen to celebrate in Winter time!

Apologies for the extended absence - no real excuse, just a case of work getting on top of me. Been working on this for a while though, so I hope you like!

Remember Coop? He's the gent on the left here.

Story wise he was in a relationship with Riff, the girl on the right, but she was killed in action during an (avoidable) skirmish with the QA. He's pretty central to the plot of a campaign I was writing, and his pose doesn't work so well now that he's by his lonesome. Thought I'd redo him, and the results are below.

It's not hugely clear in the pictures, but a lot of sculpting work has gone into this gent. His left hand, for example, is sculpted from scratch, and he's holding a small stuffed toy in the right. There are a few character touches - The hat was made by Riff, for example, and hopefully offsets the rough look a little. The flamer weapon strapped to his pack was made from spare parts and salvage by Skragg, so should ideally come across as pretty improvised. It's a few months down the line from the prototype!

Hope you like, anyway. Story to come, hopefully sooner than another month. Thanks so much for all the interest, I'll try to be a bit more regular!

Man, Scarp, lots of awesome new stuff to peruse!

First off, love the map guy- not sure how he disappoints you so, but he's full of flavor to me, but to be truthful, I also liked the bandanna head more.

Second, the stuff he's sitting on- awesome... it was mentioned that the garbage-bag caught another Dakkaite's eye... and now it's done the same to me. Sexy, sexy, garbage bag... And the boxes are pretty sweet too.

Finally, a whole new model for Coop- going above and beyond the call of duty, but kudos. Coop looks so much more... miserable, now. Perhaps it's the B&W photo, but the pose and shoulder-droop... should be putting that laspistol to his temple aaaaany day now... really good stuff.

Keep it up!

-Remi

P.S. Another PMW, eh? Interesting... what models are on the menu this time around?

@Scarper I have to say you have an eye for detail and skill at creating character your miniatures seem to tell a story by the way they look and are posed.

That really is a skill I must try and learn, Coop has taken on a complete new persona he really looks dejected and crushed, I like the little touches like the toy in his right hand (I gather sentimental value )

Your skill at choosing and combining kits is one amazing I truly mean this, for instance I was never a fan of those pig irons legs now I want to buy a dam set

I have to say a great job mate and cant wait to see the next update

Last thing is he named after the shop next character name is SPAR all ways ready 24/7

P.S. What head did you use I cant work it out

Nice to see you back, Scarper. I have tried to update my own logs too - I don't think you need to apologise for absence considering the work you do!

The new Coop looks grizzled, I like! He also looks pretty bitter - don't know if you intended that but I approve muchos.
I'm glad you told me what was in his right hand - I couldn't figure it out! I am wondering if it's actually clearer in real life - otherwise maybe a little more sculpting to make it look more fluffy toyesque? Rabbit ears for example?

Oh by the way, you have alot to answer for - I have recently come into possession of a bunch of random IG and Van Saar gangers and I have been thinking about exploring Caitliff with some gangers myself.... I really DON'T need to take on more projects y'know....

That's a really decent conversion, one of your best that I have seen. Always excellent work!

Sorry for not having been around for a bit, was buried in a project and limited hobby time. I'm hoping to be around a bit more frequently if things remain 'normal' at work.

Apologies for the extended absence, all! 12h shifts at work, no free time, yadda yadda yadda. No excuses, I know
But I'm switching post in a month (thank God), and I'll have some more forgiving hours. Hopefully some better modelling then!

Some long overdue replies:

@Remi - Thanks for the kind words! I'm really glad the body language came across on Coop - I was messing with the posing for ages. The garbage bags are really easy to do - it's literally a small 1"x1" square of an actual garbage bag stuffed with PVA glue and plastic shavings / off cuts. Give it a go!

@LDD - Nah, next up is Tesco, or maybe Lidl Thank you so so much for the kind words, they are very much appreciated. The head is one of the character set from Victoria Miniatures, with a little GS work. Really characterful models bits!

@Baiyuan - High praise indeed, thank you so much!

@Peyma - I'd be honoured, mate - Can't wait to see your rendition of the QA. Bound to be more badass than mine It's be ace for when we finally get that necro game in too! Cheers for the tip on the bunny ears too - I might see what I can do there.

@Stormwell - Cheers, man, that's great to hear! Make sure you post here when you put something up - I'd love to see it.

@RW - Thanks mate! The stuffed toy has a little sentimental value, and the hat itself was made by Riff, so he's got a little on him and I didn't want to go too overboard. Great idea though!

@TGG - Thanks a bunch!

@PDH - Thank you, Peter, glad you like him! Would you believe I considered some alcohol? I thought it might shift the stance from 'dejected' to 'drunk' though, so I held off

@Skalk - Not at all mate, I'm barely here myself at the moment Thank you for the compliment!

@Sageheart - Thank you!

@MauS - Cheers man!

@Ghosty - She did indeed - writing a fluff story on the circumstances at the mo. It was also literally the first game after I had finished painting her

Thanks so much to everyone - I really appreciate the kind words.
Bit of a brief shift in direction - next up is a mini from the 'Future sports' line sculpted by a gent named Scurv over on Lead Adventure. They're fantastic minis with some obvious inspiration from Salute of the Jugger and Brink. (If you haven't seen Salute of the Jugger, I'd recommend it - 80s B movie gold starring Rutger Hauer [the B movie kind himself!] in a dystopian future). This is my first painted one, but I'm planning on doing a full team with the grey-blue as the uniting colour. I'm also really hoping that it's the first painted one to surface on the internet, as they just came out!

They really are ace - so much detail. Hopefully someone can get a better paintjob up at some point to properly show them off

Hope you like em! 'Scurvball' slots nicely into Caitiff as a game occasionally played between rival settlements. Fairly violent but no weapons allowed, it'll serve as a source of gambling profit, and entertainment in some pretty tough times.
Please let me know what you think - I've been working really hard to improve my skin tones, and I'd love some tips!

p.s. I've also been working on some terrain, but nothing good enough to show individually. Will get a group shot up when there's more done!

p.p.s. Also been speed painting and converting more walkers for zombicide -

Skins Tones - A thin thin thin wash of Badab Black before the final highlight (or there abouts) tones it all down quite nicely.

Really like the mountaineering zombie and the lady in the windswept skirt.

Glad to see a new Scarper post - did you see this scenario before?

http://www.yakromunda.com/index.php?page=library&vfid=38

It's basically a slightly adapted version of Blood Bowl for Necromunda, I've not tried it and there is no reason you couldn't just straight up play Blood Bowl with sci-fi figures but it could be good. Looks like your guy would fit right in.

Looking nice, Scarp!

Regarding skin tones, my process l aways starts the same- base black and build up flesh tone from there. Helps create more distinct facial features. A quicker process is paint flesh, wash w/ Sepia of Dev Mud, and done.

These look a lot better from 3 ft away, but it'll give you an idea of what I mean:

@LDD - Thanks for the kind words, man! They really are a fun line - the gent who sells them does so from here. Tell him Scarper sent you! (Though he doesn't actually know who I am, so it might just get you a weird look )

@PDH - Thanks for the tip, that actually helped a lot on what I'm working on next! The big puffer jacket on the mountaineer was a lot of fun to sculpt.

@Bruticus - I hadn't seen that one actually, thanks for the heads up! Will have to give it a try at some point. Thank you for the kind words too!

@Skalk - They actually hold up very well to macro photography! Thank you very much for the advice - I'll have to give that a try soon.

@Monkey - Cheers man, much appreciated! Would love to see some more zombs from your end - your wash paint jobs were what got me off my arse to start painting mine in the first place

@Nathanie1 - High praise indeed, as I've been following and loving your own thread! Thank you kindly, I'm glad you like.

Not too much in the way of updates today.
I've been trying my hand at scratch building some necro terrain on the cheap for some games with a friend of mine here in Edinburgh (who has an awesome blog full of zombie hunters and scratch built Battlefleet Gothic ships that you should totally check out, incidentally). These are obviously early WiPs, but you can see what I'm trying to do. Expect a lot more hazard stripes!

I've not done much of this terrain building malarkey before, but these have been a lot of fun to do. I'm also bursting with terrain ideas at the mo, which is nice as I've got a little more free time on my new shift pattern! Expect some tin cans, platforms and lots of walkways in the near future

I've also given a quick lick of paint to another of the future sportsmen from Lead Adventure, this one the team 'bruiser' with some shoddy wound suturing on his scalp

Hope you enjoy, and I'd love to hear what you think!

Dude! Thanks for the garbage bag tips! I'll be sure to add some to my scenery, as that is really freakin' simple to do!

Like the new models and the scenery is more kickass than mine... "trying your hand in" and I'm on my 3rd piece and mine still suck... I think you're onto something good, so keep those pieces coming.

Those future sportsman figs really remind me of Bandits from Fallout. I like them simply for the reference - they for your Necro work, or a completely different game?

Loving that Necromunda scratch build! I'm just getting back into Necromunda since I FINALLY talked a friend of mine into playing. I enjoy making Necromunda terrain more than any other terrain project because it doesn't have to match anything else, it can be made from junk you find on the side of the road or scrap from someone's junk pile, and there's no such thing as 'too much'.

Also, I checked out your buddy's thread and I'm subbed. Thanks for the recommendation!

@Remi - Not at all man, I'm sure I've seen them done somewhere else before, so it's not that original anyway. I grabbed an orange bin bag for biohazard waste off a roll at work to make some interesting ones to dot among the others too
Cheers for the kind words, but I think you're too harsh on your own stuff - i really like your chem plant!
I see where you're coming from with the Fallout flashbacks from the LA figs - it's not intentional, but it might just be the colours I've chosen. They're officially for a blood bowl-esque game that Scurv is working on the rules for at the moment, but I really just ended up getting them because I wanted to paint them. I think they'll fit in pretty well on Caitiff, anyway

@RW - Thanks, man, really appreciate that!

@LDD - Cheers, but I think I could make terrain for a decade and still not come close to that crown Maybe I can entice him back onto Dakka though - it's been a while.

@Neil - Long time no see, man! How are you? The Jugger film is some real 80s cheese, but it's fun to watch, and some good inspiration for necro / post-apoc stuff. Cheers for the kind words.

@Skalk - It's criminal how little attention that blog gets, especially with all the scratchbuilds. Cheers for the kind words on the terrain - A lot of my inspiration for actually getting off my arse and doing some terrain is down to yourself, incidentally, so thanks for posting all the stuff you have! That mechanic shop in particular was a work of art
I'm looking forward to having the multilevel standard pieces down so I can build something with a bit more character.

@Nathanie - Thank you! When did you live in Edinburgh?! Shame - we could have got a game in

@Myrthan - I'm afraid not, actually - I'd never heard of that series until you mentioned it. Sounds like a lot of fun from the wikipedia article though!

@PDH - Thanks a lot, Peter! Peyma and I got a game in on Sunday (some homebrew zombie rules rather than necro though), and it turned out to be a lot of fun. We fudged some rules on the fly, which made for a lot of narrative fun, including a death defying leap from the third stories into a dumpster
Here's a quick shot of the set-up: Almost all of this is WiP, and I didn't have time to make any proper walkways, but I'm hoping it won't be too long 'til I can fill a 4'x4' table!

Those are the plaster shipping containers from this guy http://modbuildings.blogspot.co.uk/ (also on ebay) aren't they? I just got a bunch myself. Fantastic items although not sure how to paint them.

I like the look of your risers too, what have you used for those? They are the secret to a fun table I'd say.

Oh and the scenery you have made looks great. I wish I'd thought of using cork for platforms.

I ordered a Zuzzy mat the other day, the look like the ideal solution to the Dining Room Table Zone problem. Think they take ages to ship though.

@ Skalk - The last image comment l received (around 2 months ago) just said "you need to improve your painting", so a new one is much appreciated, even if it's accidental Thanks for the kind words! The shipping containers were from here. Very reasonable prices in the UK - £3 each and £1 shipping. Might be a bit more to get across the pond though, and they're plaster, so may not turn up in the nicest condition. Mine were a little bashed around when they arrived, but easy enough to jigsaw back together. Worth a look though!

@Bruticus - That's very kind, especially from yourself! Your table is hugely inspiring. I borrowed the cork idea from Andy_T's blog, though I wish I could claim credit for it. The risers are 10mm flooring insulation foam topped off with some cork - I'll plaster the sides when I've got enough basic terrain together and can get onto painting! I've not heard of Zuzzy mats actually - will have to look them up. Thanks for the tip!

Can't sleep, so I figured I'd do some work on some more terrain I'm building. This is very WiP, but it's the start of a sump bridge for the toll bridge scenario. It swivels on a pivot that I'm still building, and will come replete with a sump to cross!
Thought I'd have some fun and set up a mini diorama with the work I've done so far.

I really like the idea that the sentry on the sniper's nest was busy cooking his dinner, and his friend downstairs building the barricades was caught off guard. I was really going for a "Oh shiii-" kind of moment

Just a bit of fun, but I hope you like it, anyway. Please let me know what you think!

That is just great. Don't fix it to the pivot, maybe use a magnet to attach it. That way you can use it to randomly place between buildings in other games. Flexibility is a good feature for terrain.

Where did you find those great bridge sides? Hmm I am not sure I want to know, trying hard not to make more Necromunda scenery, it's hard to resist!
