Aye up folks , wish i had something new to show but i have been having a chronic case of winter blues and what feels like terminal burnout , Still lots of ideas , a simple pre heresy space crusade game set on board Horus's ship with boarding crews. and a Proper 3d game board for a custom version of inquisitor been the top contenders, But the drive to finish them is just not there at the moment .. I even picked up some more lizardy stuff from WFB for the liliitu coven the cockatrice and the tomb kings tomb guards, but nothing is really doing it for me .. gonna take a break and hope the desire to create comes a flooding back .

Hey Neil! Sorry to hear you're stuck in the doldrums - hope it doesn't last too long. I've had similar funks myself around times when family have been acting up. No real helpful advice to give, I'm afraid, but just know that it's not terminal - something small will interest you eventually, and that's just what kicks it all off all over again.
Hope things aren't too rough at your end, and I'll be sending you good vibes

have you considered making a sort of honor rack for your stuff you already produced? something that shows you how special your work is? something that might be of intrinsic motivation and positive feedback of your prowess?
if all else fails... i am more than happy to banter with you...as long as yoou keep with us...you know...appetite comes with the eating^^

hello neil... welcome back to the fold!
the elysians always give the vibe of true battlehardened spec ops... when it comes to IG forces from GW these are very tempting! also your poses have added a lot to the feel of these scenes! you can almost hear eery sounds and feel the tension those soldiers must have in their muscles...
that one pic looks even like a predator kind of vision...is that how you picture orks to look like or is it from another charcters point of view?

Hey peeps , sorry for the extended absence , family stuff , left little room for modelling and my mojo was shot . Inspiration has been wanting to come back for a while , and it did with the space crusade board , but lack of funds to complete it and the arrival of the new forge world stuff , sent my passion packing , there stuff will be half the price of doing it myself . I did however form the desire for a more passionate board whilst i was in the midst of designing to hit charts and what nots . The movie the women in black gave me the jitters and spurred a passion for the Gothic again , i have wanted to create a dark tower for a while , the juxtaposition between smooth walls and rocky outcrops gets me every time , so a long inspiration trawl later
https://gimmebar.com/loves/neil101/collection/firehose
and i have a design had no end of trouble with the thing though , as i am a bit strapped for cash at the moment trying to make do with stuff i can scavenge again recycled road in this one . Also wanted to capture that realistic rock thing that model railway guys do so well, http://www.building-your-model-railroad.com/making-rocks.html
so i tried to cast my own from my garden with some old plaster of paris and really old rubber for molds , didn't work so well but was very interesting , not sure if this is going to be the best way for me.. but i do like the detail in the rocks . ( have a thing for textures at the moment )
nothing is glued on the build , just trying to find a good silhouette ,
@Vik cheers Vik , glad to be back , just needed some time and space the elysian look like the work of Möbius to me , especially form the fifth element , spec ops is apt , i got them for LJ as they have the ship security vibe he wanted . the pics were just for fun nothing really behind those ones , just playing glad you like mate.
@Rogue Thanks man appreciate it alien vs predator .. mmm.. i like that and i have the models , oh noes don't get me started on another project
@PDH Cheers Pete , Its beer goggles point of view , the GK will keep tacked until i get my mits on the forge world board , so i dont get bored with them .probably change completely by then though oh and thanks for the link love fanir stuff , very dark,
@Rawson hey mate thanks for popping in , i think i might be moving into a new era of moddleing , i am really enjoying just playing and photographing again .
@Cheers llamahead , boards on hold now unless i get some real pennies real soon. the forgeworld minis do lend themselves to my style of photography much more so than any other minis i think , the detail just pops.
@Monkey Cheers mate , yep custodes for Bj , copied diligently from the excellent Rhys knight here, the ork comment me lol . and seriously think about GDCK cheers.

Neil that church really is superb!!!!! I really want to see this one painted and finished . Now that would be good to play Inquisitor over.
edit - I meant to ask what is the big black area to the left of the steps upto the church....I cannot make it out in that picture.
So when is your anniversary? The Zone Mortalis looks good, cannot wait to see the doors. I rather like how FW have used some of John's art on the walls too. If I had more gaming buddies in the area I think I would buy one too. Though I imagine painting it would be an effort and a half.

@ cap cheers man , love that shot my self was in two minds as to show it or save it for when its complete , but wheres the fun in that , ;-)
@ PDH , thought you might like it , i am trying to make ita gaming board also , but dio first , i tried the other way round and it looked crap , no heart and soul just gaming mechanic, i really need to get some proper pink foam and tools , like a work bench and a shed , would love that . The dark area is going to be the cold plated mechanicus basement area with plenty of movement room and doors and what nots, trying to get that rocky and smooth variation. got loads of passion for finishing this off mate , never fear , cheers mate.

hmmm.... interesting project...a good opening to any comment on this thread
so a black tower? hmmm... the inspiration pic is full of stuff from known movies and lots of other sources... is that small part of the admechs done by you? not entirely sure as mostly you draw/sketch in finer lines... but i might be wrong here^^
the plaster of paris idea and the use of garden landscape as a sort of mold making material is very good idea...and i do apreciate your ambitious research for good and convincing looking textures! here lies true value for the dio!
and well the current version of the dio... very scenic... but i am not totally surprised by that...you are a man fro a scenic aproach of such projects... seems that is bread and butter for you^^ oh and i think that is a good idea to share that cloud site for research purposes... tho i have to say i feel better for having downloaded everything that takes my fancy^^

Hey Neil! So good to see you're producing again - and such unique stuff too! Hope this marks the start of a big creative period for you
Love the chapel, and especially your evocative shots of it - it's been said by others, but the image of the troops climbing the stairs is fantastic. I really want to see the Woman in Black, but it was that or the Muppets last time I went to the movies with Hannah, and - what can i say? The elysians look sweet too, as well as the board - amazing stuff. Have you checked your house for FW bugs?
Apologies if I missed your last update, have had very little time for Dakka lately. Hope you're doing well!

Hey folks , been working on the frank n furters lair, some good progress some not so good
@Vik why thank you kind sir, The admechs are by the genius Jes goodwin i think , looks very much like his work , he has influenced my own work though , as a kid i copied his terminator captain sketch for my art homework , cant find the pic now.
right again with the texture work, if that's wrong it just doesn't work as a convincing reality for me. lots of stuff in the gimme bar , very handy for me , the talented Tears of envy spotted it , and i haven't gone back since.
@ Perkustin Hey mate , yep Frankenstein's monster is gonna get it ! the elysian pic is just glowing edges filter in photoshop. looks kinda cool on that pic, shame on me using filters
edit oops @Scarper ,thank you .very kind words matey, i hope this signals a new creative juncture too, really feeling some writing and maybe even drawing , feels like i have been away an age , not sure if i would have opted for the woman in black over the muppets had it been on , these are not the bugs you are looking for hope life isnt too mental for you , would be a shame to miss out on all those post apoc stories
work is progressing at a pace , i stocked up on 12 bottles of liquid nails and now only have 1 left picked up some cork sanding blocks for rubble and stripped some bark off my plum tree i even stocked up on some extruded polystyrene at last !! but the plaster of Paris casts are the best thing for this project, i made the cliff face first using just the yellofoam polystyrene but it looks a little plain now i have completed the front steps and the side cave . ,the sleepy hollow tree and the graveyard , next, i made my own tombstones using the plaster of Paris , but the my squirty polystyrene foam tree failed , too big and dominating will probably just pick up the citadel wood.

Hi all
Thanks for the feedback , I have been struggling with the build , the natural stuff went in like clockwork , but everything else has been a bit of a mare , It was my bday the other day , so i picked up a few prezzies for the build , the garden of morr and the citadel wood , both cool products , i highly recommend the garden of morr in particular , a bit pricey though at twenty five quid but the tombs in it are marvellous , great for inquisitional stuff. and the gothic reaper is straight outta the original Frankenstein, perfect! but then i got stumpted with the tower , cant decide on 40ked windmill or just a gothic tower , none seem right at the moment . my heart leans for the windmill , but i think i will get burnout if i have to scratch build the 40ked sails, but a plain tower looks a bit bland now .
any help folks can suggest pictures or other 40k towers would be much appreciated, really want to start painting now. before mass effect 3 steals away my life
@ Moltar Cheers molt , epic scale would be so much easier , for huge dios i think i might take it up
@vik , lol , i based it on this pic kinda yep my garden is truly a garden of morr
@Commander cain hiya cc , cheers man , i really don't have the space truly , just cant stop myself building the bleeding things and your skills are in no way lacking my friend
@ shazolenzabi Thanks shazo, cost me bomb this one , cant really decise if its a gaming table or a diorama . probably one of the reasons i suffering with the tower design.
@Baiyuan Hey mate , thanks man , wanted it to be light , ....its not!
@Rogue wolves He rogue , thanks mate , the natural stuff i am pretty confident with , its hard to go wrong with hills stuck now though.
@Sahzo " qoute " " So uh Neil, you didn't happen to have an encounter where one object looked like an ice cream cone, and another like a circle and a little red one that went "whoooosh!" did you?"
well if i did i wouldnt be posting about it on dakka , dirty boy
any advice on what direction to take the tower is most welcome folks.

I dont think a windmill is the best idea, I think that it would look cool as "the lightning church" from Tales Of Hersey!
18867
Post by: madmartykmf
I love it but not a fan of the windmill. It certainly adds atmosphere but throws off the whole grim dark future idea. If it was for fantasy I'd say leave it, but take no offence I love the feel of this work of art. I would maybe add a clock instead covered in imperial iconography.
Always a pleasure to see your work!

Post by: ishkatar
I don't know... I think the windmill is a nice idea - it reminds me the scene from Army of Darkness movie and the one from Van Helsing movie... And a lot of other grim and dark images. Windmill is a really suitable variant of tower for gloomy and creepy atmosphere, well, with a proper decorations. Something which can make a great 40k landscape. Just throw in some wires, tesla-coils and other tech stuff for more Sci-Fi feel... Who said, there can't be a futuristic windmill? 40k is all about grotesque and fantasy vibe. An awesome build nonetheless! Keep it up
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Well Neil, one never knows when one has been affected by such a "encounter" He was making the sculpture unconsciously at first. Looks good with the tower for the windmill and the graves etc. Like it.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i think the windmilltheme is as classy as you can go... i know... the future surly will have a problem to have a working windmill that is any use against so many other energy sources in that techperiode... but well... i think you should do the windmill... but for my sins...i would do it ruined and halfburned ... the wings/sails of the windmill like this perhaps...or already bunt down seriously...:
also like the lil poe pic with the raven!
and what is that substructure of the windmillsials made form? looks like a picketfence to me...^^

Thanks folks , given me plenty of food for thought , really like the last church idea , and i think it would be pretty easy to do too
, then the windmill got a big thumbs up , and my heart does agree , the only thing putting me off is another long build , kitbashing .. :-/ , i have tentatively placed the building on a black powder world , with little imperium contact,so the fantasy element is not so much bothering me, but still , it is 40k not fantasy .. mmm.
@ Capitan solstice , giving me plenty of inspiration on the church theme , never really considered it until now thanks , found a deviant art pic too
https://gimmebar.com/loves/neil101/collection/firehose
@Madmartykmf hey mike thanks for the feedback mate, i do agree with you about the windmill , my original idea was just to have a fantasy themed 40k diorama , then the Frankenstein idea took hold and the windmill is so Frankenstein and Gothic , , but i am struggling to fit it in with the mythology , is it an imperium structure on a black-powder planet , can i tie the two themes together convincingly .. guess we'll see , cheers man. and congrats again.
@Ishkatar , this is what i feel in my heart about the piece , i usually go with my gut , but Amber and Bailey , both told me in no uncertain terms they think the windmill looks out of place or too dominating , now i am torn , i have found some cool tesla style stuff that would work very well with the build from quantum gothic
http://www.quantumgothicwars.com/rcstudio/
but the price and more work is putting me off .. maybe i should stop trying to rush it. thanks matey.
@Shazo , I think we must have gotten our wire crossed i thought you were talking about the hill , who was making the sculpture unconsciously , and what sculpture ? sorry for the mix up matey ,
aye spear tipped fences , they never work do they tut tut tut .
@ Vik , love that windmill design ,
based on this concept art i think
which this guy built before if you remember. soo cool.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/at/at2/2010/9/25/f79e8b046c30a0e9002dfcb2b7703e98_16851.jpg
love the burnt out sails idea , i was thinking of going down this route at one point , so it wasnt too dominating , my problem with this design is its so very much fantasy , not really a problem since i am thinking of a blackpowder planet , just , i dont have any fantasy buildings to pull it off convincingly.
thanks for all the ideas folks , plenty of food for thought will, keep posted where it goes from here.

Post by: ishkatar
I tend to disagree. 40k is very fantasy in so many ways... After all, it's a very eclectic universe, where anything can find it's place.
Of course, it's all up to you, but I think, that hobby is all about making your ideas come true, no matter, how complex and work-demanding they are.
Pfff, I know, that sounds a bit lame and not very motivating
PS:
Those Power Modules you've linked are super cool!
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
your resaerch is yet again mindblowing...and yep...i remember the guy that made that windmill... great builder!!!
well with the whole blackpowder theme too you are totally boundless... so i would do this... but you are also quite right that the sails would be dominating the scene pretty much... maybe by only doing one full sail and the rest ruined would compensate you in a way? that might leave enough "mindspace" for the whole terrain to be worth a look...the balance restored and staying true to the vision ...
as for the powergenerators... i have in my scratchbuild box a chewing gum package...that looks like a powergenerator... if i am able i will show you a pic of that... dunno maybe it will be helpful^^
34119
Post by: neil101
@ Ishkatar , true , its very eclectic , i do like fantasy , just putting off what i know i should do i guess ( the hard work ) scratch built sails , grimdarked up to look suitably futuristic and still retain that fantasy vibe. tricky stuff , but ultimately what i think the hill needs , either that or a church spire with ruined outbuildings now.
@ Vik I think i know what gum packet you mean , the rolled stuff in strips ? have to pop into town today so i may pick up a pack , nice call mate.

Hey folks , i finished the build finally , took a bit longer than originally planned , decided to go with the regular aquilla tower , and move focus of the build to the as yet unseen rear , as diorama , i was happy to only have the front and sides , but as i progressed i thought , bugger it ,this can be a gaming board too so i added a few bits to give more regular gaming room and also to let the hill have a bit of breathing space , probably will add another flat section for gaming purposes, i base coated all as one and will paint it all as one , but the boards are in fact separate for storage ,as is the tower which is in two sections. painting next effeminately going for a morning or moonlit winter theme , and picked up some woodland scenics for snow basing , looks like a great product. was thinking of a vampirific blood red tower in a snowy white environment , but it might be a bit much maybe just regular tower.
painting suggestions welcome
introducing inquisitor radical inqusitor Absolom on the mount.
@ Vik still havent been in town for that gum generator
@ captain solstice , special thanks to you for igniting the church theme , it really inspired me to finish the build , loved the windmill , but couldn't face the kitbash

oh man... what a feast for the eyes! again so much storytelling with pics! what i truly like and what i one day would love to see in person, are the many delicatly placed breadcrumbs of details all over the board... so many sweet things here and there ...alcovens and steps and caves and scattered small items like the axe and it´s chopping block...
also i like how you help us even tho we are not there to look in every nook, to do just that with your camera perspective... great photography... i think for this one you should again make a scenic background like you did with your chilling captain at the island... a moody sky...
i think after seeing this we all can live with the tower and not having a windmill quite good... it seems to have inprinted it´s need and will on the artist!
very good work old boy^^ and beeing an old grunt just means in this context full of whim and vinegar enough to be able to conjour such pleasentries for our eyes!

Thanks folks , i am pretty tired after the build , your comments really kept me going , when it started to get tough , went through loads of different concept stages during the build, was difficult trying to keep the Frankenstein aim , especially when i researched Don quiote , lol . learned new stuff too , less is more ! i always forget this basic concept and end up having to pull bits of conversions and scenery;-) , although my cliff face went through 3 different stages , and still doesn't really look like i wanted it too . Oh well , you live and learn eh!
really looking forward to a nice easy paint job , will probably take an age as its so bloody big though .
@ captain solstice , Yeah cheers again matey , ( less is more , more often than not )
@Rogue wolves thanks rogue , , now the fun bit. ;-)
@ Vik glad you like mate, the back drop is something i have been thinking on for the final pics , it will need to be pretty huge though , i have a spare door that i am thinking of using a panel of the front of it. Been old has some advantages , i get to be more grumpy than usual without having to explain myself .
@ Dst , hey mate , cheers ! it was pretty frustrating , every time i put something right something eles looked wrong , i was spinning the board to make sure it had that golden ratio feeling. i wanted it to feel like an old landscape painting by the romantics. not sure if i pulled that off , will e easier to see after the paints on .
thanks for all the help folks

@ Vik canvas is a good idea , but pricey i was thinking wallpaper actually .
@ Mike Hey Matey , i just realised i made a shrine to the aquilla lol, your work has obviously inspired on a deeper level .
@Captain Solstice , I did see a picture of the lightning church on deviant art after you mentioned it , and it was sat upon a rock, i haven't read the story though , i had dismissed the idea of church early on , but after you mentioned it , and i did some more specific research i realised it was probably the , best option for this build . A church on a big rock is definitely not original , but tats exactly why it was right , , also , the shrine of the aquilla is a great kit , but doesn't lent itself to conversion very well , on account of the huge wingspan , something I figured i could get rid of , in hindsight , it was never going to happen I think I if I hadn't built the hill , i would have definitely gone with the windmill , but i was kinda burnt out tbh , and needed a refocus , the church idea was that , thanks again , if i were to build the actual lightning church , i guess , it wouldn't have the big aquilla symbol on the front though
the idea of a sacred stone inside is interesting too . i also found these cool images that convey part of the idea i wanted to portray
@ Sahzo i am a bit dense sometimes shazza , mash potato !
Funnily enough this came on the tv whilst i build it , Amber just looked at me sideways one eyebrow raised

@ Dst Wallpaper sample book might be too small i imagine , but textured wallpaper in general might work well for a painted backdrop . i have a roll of lining paper somewhere in the house .
I primed the Tor today , using sponge stippling , sorry for bad lighting in pics, looking foeward to trying to get the snowy feeling

I have no idea where i am going to store this mate , i rarely think that far ahead , i have been contemplating , ritually burning it tbh , but doubt i have the alls for such a grand gesture , more likely just stick it at the bottom of my bed , trip over it every morning and slowly kick it to death one day at a time , like i did with the necron monolith scenery
@PDH , hey Pete glad you approve , I kept thinking of your minis whilst building it , thinking would so and so fit here , or would this do justice to your inquisitorial guys , so thanks for the inspiration mate
Will probably do some detail work tomorrow and add more depth , I have been researching snowy and winter themed stuff , to try and get a good idea about all the different, ice and snow styles that could be added to the board, I tried to get the look of a green full moonlit night , at first , but decided it was too monotone, that's why there are greenish hues on the board , I think it works well near the grave yard.

now! no you didn´t ruin that one, now did you?
but i really should finish this first.
story of my hobbylife... and yet i always fail to do so^^
it is really a shame that you have not some gaming club you attend to... otherwise you could at least donate your stuff... that way it would at least get played and used as it was intended... hmmm...what a horrible way of such a fine piece to crumble to dust...

Hey folks , added the snow effect yesterday , and I wasn't overly impressed , so i then had to vacuum it all off not very easy either ,as i had spray pva glued it on took me all day to rectify that problem , several ink washes ,and highlights later , i was back at the beginning oh and i lost my raven to the vacuum
thought i would share the ten minutes of snow effect on the tor with you , i have started work on the tower now , and its nearly done tbh barring details , but i think i will save those pics for the final dio , although i did post em up on the ammo bunker on Molotov's inquisitor terrain thread if your really want to see them
also started base coated a miniature for dio hurrah!

@ HF Izanagi , lol , it looked alright , not variation though , and to get that i would have had to work pretty hard i reckon , snow drifts and ice sheets , , where as this just looked like the first fall . I also missed the colour variation immediately ! go figure . i have been looking forward to the snow for ages and when i added it i thought , oh i miss the grimdarkness of it all lol
i linked some gw tutorials earlier , i was going to follow their lead tbh.

Hey folks sorry for the absence.. I have been working on a few projects though I finally got around to putting form to character i created for Praxus , Hopefully he will be taking part in Molotovs Inqivitational.. in june so he has a retinue to come asap then paint, working on that as i type.
anyone who has followed this blog will know Vendrake from GDCK as the Ordo Xenos responsible for capturing those cookie thief's, also appears in some of the Praxus fiction and the story from pimp my wizard.. I had always envisioned him as a Eisonhorn type character ,, surrounded with nobles and diplomats. but some other nastiness too.
sorry i don't have time to comment on all the great feedback at the moment , needless to say , many thanks
More to follow time permitting

glad you approve mate , he wouldn't even exists with your continued support over the year/s i will one day finish Praxus I swear it You know how i like my nobles vik. me being a royalist an all
And just for you Vik some more Praxus
[ i]First up Duke Adalaise
The youngest of two brothers , son to Louis de le mar Adalaise , Planetary governor of Praxus , and aggri-dustrial planet proto forgeworld in the local hydra system within the Dalthus sector .
As the youngest heir , his Older brother Xavius Adalaise is next in line of succession . Schooled in the finest nobilite ways of treachery and deceipt, Duke Louis Fournier - Adalaise was a rash an impulsive youth , unlike his brother , he was reckless in his pursuit of adventure and deviations. In His lust for excitement , the young man, took up duelling as a pass time. His chances better than most due to his custom force shield generator. His dead eye aim was the talk of the sector for many years , leaving a trail of blue blood in his wake . His new life suited him deadly ,dashing and handsome , the ladies of Dalthus swooned, he had nearly forgot he wasn't the actual heir to Praxus. This worked in his favour until a fateful chance encounter with Inquisitor Vendrake in the Governors palace.
Fournier, displeased with Vendrakes treatment of his elderly father challenged the ageing and unassuming Inquisitor to a duel. The whiley Amalthian Inquisitor took this chance to gain leverage over the ageing Governor, agreeing to the young man's terms ,the pair met at dawn atop the massive imperial dwarfing the surround buildings of Praxus Prime.
A light wind swept over the balustrades whipping there hair in frenzy of static life. Cold steel blue eyes stared the young man down , but he had faith in his aim. The invisible forcefield crackled the air around him , lifting the hairs on his arms to attention.
Plantery commander Louis his first born son Xavius and his grandson Antal watched nervously as Fournier loaded and cocked the heavy duelling pistol.
steady .. aim .. He felt the muscles in his arm tense as he brought the iron-sights of his bulky naval pistol to bear over his brothers heart .. kill him and you shall be governor
One shot rang out over the city that morning .. but the effects have echoed through time .
Convinced Fournier had tried to assassinate his only brother , the governor banished him from the imperial palace..
Ashamed and confused , Louis took solace in the soothing words of the Inquisitor , the wind can play havoc up here , this was not your fault .. you are a talented man .. your skills are wasted hear .. put your faith in the emperor child .. if you want to kill , we have plenty of enemies.. come where you are most appreciated.
Xavius was critically wounded. his only chance of survival was to be fitted with an iron heart. The inquisitor's personal servitor was sanctioned to perform the operation .. bed bound the oldest brother grew bitter with resentment. The Imperial Governor died not long after .. leaving a vulnerable and subservient Xavius in control.
The duke has served alongside Vendrake for two score and four years .. and never in that time has he missed a shot due to the wind.[/i]
cheers all Good to be back good night

I love the Inquisitor and I love that powerfist bit, not seen that before. You're very brave about hacking up FW resin.
With regards to the duellist's pistol, I think that the quintessential duelling pistol would have a long barrel and would (at least look like) a single shot weapon. The six-shooter looks a little chunky, like it would fire giant slugs that would make a real mess. If I could pick, I think I'd go for option 2, it looks really elegant

@Vik , the fluff not to my usual standard but you get the jist..
felt good to write about Praxus again tbh, love the mauser. might make a return ..

@ Biayuan Thanks mate , would really appreciate you weapons knowledge on the pistol if you get chance.. its bugging me no end.
@Bruticus Toys are for breaking , was my motto as a child ,hasn't changed much , just I have to pay for them now .
I agree with you single shot is the best option , not gameplay wise though , i would dearly like to get that efecct but .. cant see how .. 2 is my fave also , But these guys will be off to game at warhammer world , so GW parts only is what I am after.

@ Biayuan Thanks mate , would really appreciate you weapons knowledge on the pistol if you get chance.. its bugging me no end.
How could I not help!? So here's my two cents:
1. You already fixed the position of the head after version 2, that was definitely the right step. Such a small difference in posture makes all the difference in attitude. Like Scarper said, now he has the right hint of arrogance.
Another matter of posture, make sure the barrel doesn't point upwards, like in 1,3,6,7,8. To me he looks more like he's taking aim, rather than already firing.
2. For more inspiration you can obviously google "duelling pistols", but I found the results to be unfruitful. "olympic pistol shooting" on the other hand grants you a wealth of shooters in the same position and their sophisticated equipment.
Some examples:
Regarding the second and fourth picture, please try to focus on the "equipment".
How about giving him such goggles with a clear and an opaque lense? I think that would be quite cool.
3. I think scopes are out of question here. If he's a duellist/sportsman there are no scopes, just iron sights and the most accurate custom-made weapon he can come by. Such a weapon obviously has a longer barrel (I agree 2 is good, 6 is too long) and would normally be single shot. A las weapon with a power-pack on the back would be a nice workaround. I like sixshooters, but they would be style-wise inappropriate here. A semi-automatic could work.
4. I can't really tell you how I'd build such a weapon for your guy, I would have to actually do it myself and would end up with something I couldn't have imagined before, but I think the tallarn las pistol could be my starting point.
Shave off the mag replace it or leave it as oneshot.
Replace the las-style muzzle with a more sophisticated-looking one.
Either sculpt a hand around the grip or replace the whole grip with a similar one from one of the many WHFB percussion pistols.
Add proper iron sights.
Any element that says "custom" could be a nice touch, like one of those strange grips, or a nice pistolstock.
The detailling is hard to discuss in advance, ask yourself whether you could make it look any cooler, but try to stop before you push it too far.
Hope that helped a little, it's hard to give any further advice, I can only really do what I do when I have things right in front of me.

Yes, he is. You might have got me wrong there, I wasn't saying he's "technical". What I meant was that number 3 is not in line with his level of technique or quality. It looks too simple, too bland and too cheap. He'd have something more sophisticated if you ask me.

Hey folks , just wanted to say thanks for Volunteering your advice regarding the duke , It really is appreciated , This guys has been keeping me awake at night trying to figure out the best solution.
Molotov first suggested a single shot duelling pistol, but I was hesitant, love the naval pistol, but I did try out some options ,
None have worked so far in my opinion , I was also a bit worried that after I green stuffed him the position was a bit static , the roll in hips gone . Now I know I will need to rip of his arm and make it straight.
@ Baiyuan I know I jest with you Baiyuan But I also know you are the man when it comes to technical pre scion and 28mm weapons .. Cant thank you enough for taking time to suggest your preferences regarding the duke , I think the eye glass is spot on , I shall try this out , the pistols you linked are superb thanks for that , I never thought of Olympic pistols
And I shall take your advice regarding the pistol , I have been trying to save money and avoid having to order that tallern pistol but I think its the only one that will work . Might try to make one myself first though. I agree with everything you said( for once ,) I guess I have been avoiding the hard work I know he needs to be right.( I did put iron sights on No 6 , are these not what you are referring to ) thanks again for you input.
some pics from earlier on in his development.
@ Scarper , jazz hands ! what is this chicago.. I got rid of the "Jazz hands " because in the group shot they looked so much bigger than the rest of the gangs forge world tiny hands. did like the pose with hips though. a bit more formal stiff upper lip look now .
@Yodhrin "and a good day to you sir" Glad you like mate , my heart and soul went into this blog for a solid year, easing off a little now though...... must pretend I have a life outside of the internet .. I apologise for my bad grammar monkeys trolling and not finishing the comic ..or anything else for the matter.
@Dst mmm.. not too sure a bout a hat.. would be a little too steam punk I think.. Pistol 3 is cool a little clunky though and the hand was at the wrong angle for his cuff .. but the broom handle works in my opinion , on different note , i saw this a while back and thought of you
@Pete , Cheers mate , far too kind to put this in the same league as migsula though , Haag looks like he would have vendrake for breakfast I am obviously trying to stretch out the build to avoid having to actually paint him up.
@Hey Perkustin , Cheers mate , I guess the duke is the same mini I made before , but smaller , it was quite tricky using the dkok commissar legs as the are quite skinny compared to his breastplate, I think the shield ties those two things together nicely though.
@Baiyuan , quote "

neil101 wrote:Hey folks , just wanted to say thanks for Volunteering your advice regarding the duke , It really is appreciated , This guys has been keeping me awake at night trying to figure out the best solution.
I hear you, but the ones that keep you awake normally turn out best when finished. Molotov first suggested a single shot duelling pistol, but I was hesitant, love the naval pistol, but I did try out some options , None have worked so far in my opinion , I was also a bit worried that after I green stuffed him the position was a bit static , the roll in hips gone . Now I know I will need to rip of his arm and make it straight. :'
There is no reasoning with reason. Mol's probably right and you know you want to change that arm, don't try to ignore that fact. About the naval pistol, it's very cool background-wise and it seems plausible that the Duke would be a collector of fine weaponry just as he is an virtuosic duellist. So if you're so crazy about, I'd say give him both. A duelling pistol for long range and a naval frag pistol for close quarter encounters. Tactical versatility can't be a bad thing for an expert pistol shooter of his ilk. If you put it in a quick draw holster, that doesn't cover the whole gun it would look good. Maybe in place of the shield on his belt, I'm not too sold on that anyway. The only no-go would be dual wielding imo.
Oh, you're flattering, there are others who are just as good, I'd say. I'm looking forward to the first pics of the eye glass.
You're welcome, I'm always happy to spread my wisdom/run my mouth. Yes, the sights on number 6 would do, but again I'd say the more sophisticated, the more suitable for the duke. Make it look adjustable, a screw here, a cog there, a little bit like this one (even though it's for a rifle): More inspiration: @Pete , Cheers mate , far too kind to put this in the same league as migsula though , Haag looks like he would have vendrake for breakfast I am obviously trying to stretch out the build to avoid having to actually paint him up.
Beg to differ, Haag surely is a badass and a piece of art, but imo your work is just as inspired as Migs'. i knew what you meant , I did want a technical feel to the retinue overall actually , I have a cybercultist in their too with a strong necro vibe. I like the fantasy stuff but these guys I wanted to capture the technological aspects of 40k along side the Gothic and punk and baroque .
That's the combination of designs that makes the 40k universe the greatest one around. @ Dave & Björn ha ha ha .. I like Dave because he has a wicked sense of humour and he is an Amazing terrain builder with an insane technical level of detail.. yet I also I like Björn because he has a wicked sense of humour and he is an Amazing miniature builder with an insane technical level of detail... but which is better their is only one way to find out.... I'd say neither Dave, nor I are seeing this as competition, it's just a professional discussion. Maybe we get a little ambitious in promoting our personal philosophies sometimes, but even that only leads to amicable polemics. Plus everybody knows I'm the best! Who's your daddy...obviously just kidding.

You'll never catch me SERIOUSLY telling someone their way is wrong just because it is different. My personal philosophy on life is to try and be more open-minded today than I was yesterday, every day...but I can BS with the best of them
In fact, it's probably safest to assume that both Baiyuan and myself are being smartasses by default whenever we post anything at all

Good motto, Dave. Sounds a little wiser than mine, which is 自强不息 (translates to "self cultivation without cease" or more literally "improve yourself, don't rest" . Then again, it might seem differently, but I'm quite lazy and I need something to aspire after.
Vik, I'd never take offence from being called a smartass... my fiancé actually gave me a t-shirt that says so.

My shirt actually says "Besserwisser" but I'd consider "Klugscheisser" as a synonym and similarly appropriate.

Neil - What Björn said. It give me that feeling so I'm right and just take your complement and say thank you. I know we Brits have problems with that though. I think it was DS who told me off for being modest when receiving a complement.

Neil those sketches are great! I especially like the 'cardinal' really hope to see a mini of that. The Young Adalise concept art and mini look promising although i am not sure about the head on the mini, the head in the concept art is my favourite element of the piece.

@ Baiyuan , thanks again mate , for the reference pics , it has sent me on a nice google pic search and i have the ideas of the pistol i think the duke needs. have some time to dayso i am going to work on it .
@DST & Baiyuan , I still think a duel would be fun to watch ;-)
rivet guns at the ready !
Just messing , I know we all have the greatest respect for each other on these forums , .. well execpt for Viks thread that is just fair game . ;-)
@ Pete , okay .Vik's told me off for that before .. fishing for compliments is what he called it :-)
@ Perkustin , would like to finish of a version of the young duke , I agree the mask is the thing for him though.
@ Rogue Aye , never really get around to doing anything grander than sketches though , maybe one day , I will finish the comic , and that will inspire more drawing and painting.
@ Iron Bars thanks mate , I had looked at the forgeworld empire range but I missed that one , is a beautiful pistol , but at first glance looks a bit big for him. the handle is great though near perfect. i had seen this one but thought too small

Hey folks a quick update, I painted a model don't get excited though its not one of Vendrakes gang was feeling pretty cheesed off at all this converting lark , and needed distraction and to test some new paints also thought it would be a good idea to get some practice in before i paint the retinue up, just basing left for a few now then onto the paint .
big thank you to everyone's comments regarding the Duke , especially Baiyuans links it really made the difference i needed , I went ahead with the Olympic duelling pistol style as i like the technological aspects of it, but i didn't do the eyepiece in the end too fiddly for me special thanks also goes to Sacrper who very kindly sent me the tallern pistol I so wanted. then didn't use sorry mate .
Just to reiterate Vendrakes retinue is made primarily for Molotov's Inquivitational event at Warhammerworld . So I have really tried to be good and only use GW parts , that's has been quite tricky sometimes especially regarding the dukes pistol, but patience won out out in the end, and I am very glad I didn't cheat and grab that pistol form warmachine , feels good to overcome that problem with help from your friends
So here is a group shot of the gang
Vendrake Inquisitor =][=Ordo Xenos amalthian Puritan
Souel astropath=][= tarot divinator - Astromancer
Chrion =][=combat medic , ex hive techno cult - Stymm junky -- ( if his stim suit ruptures only the Famorian can fix it , untill then Chrion will get extra doses of slaught or other combat drugs and styms , sending him into a rage - catatonic or something worse -- i built another quick model of Chiron to represent the slaught change ..
Cecropian of famoria =][= Techpriest .
Duke Adalaise =][= Duellist
Socrates =][= Acolyte

hmmmmm^^ the beastman looks very good... great fur you did... is the chainsword all rusty? ...my only nitpick tho would be the wolfen fur around his shoulder... maybe you could do a paw pattern on this piece?
the inq- munda gang looks very superhero like! nice twist with the book cover titles... that is a refreshing idea^^... the naga looking one tho you forgot in a single feature pic^^...

Learn to make better pictures, it's just mean to post such beauties and make us crawl into our screens to fully perceive them.
I love the duellist, inq, acolyte, medic and tech priest, but the astropath doesn't work yet (at least not for me, might be the sobriety that is alien to me and could be solved by the paintjob) and the brute looks wrong (might be the weird neck and the ridiculous size of the mace-head).
Nevertheless 100/100 points for making a perfect retinue, that really has it all.

The Ethereal conversion looks especially fantastic, where is that head from? I think the thing on his belt needs to be hooped onto something though. And I love his superhero pose. Just about done with the Famorian minus some blood on his arco whips.
@Vit Cheers Vit , the gun came out just about right, i can now sleep
@The brute , is just a very quick model to represent when chiron goes loopy , its not getting any more love from me, and i might not use it at all tbh , because its so rough.
the club is from the forgeworld ogryn I converted last year, its his drill bit arm
@ Hey Vik , The beastman was justa quic paint job , and wont be getting any more love from me either. just to get me thinking about paints to be honest , although I like how he came out , kinda muted and blanchey .. really enjoyed painting him though.
naga is not getting a close up far too rough , shouldn't have really posted the pic along with the other guys but i guess we deserve our 15 mins right
@Rogue , look forward to seeing more of your work mate
@Making you squirm in your seat is half the reason I post give a man his small pleasures Nothing wrong with those pics must be your eyesight
Glad you like the full group shot , I totally agree with about the brute , was just a last min idea , and wont make it into the final group as chiron alter ego unless something dramatically changes , although i personally love the Astropath guy.. nice easy paintjob is what i am thinking with him in particular.
@Bruticus, Hey mate , the head is forgeworld Cadian vets. about the piercings .. i did notice after i added socrates's head he had a lip ring , but tbh i am going for that blanche punkiness with him , so it will fit .. like this stuff
Glad you like the Astropath , he is one of the group faves for me.
@PDH Cheers Pete, is your eyesight as bad as Biayuan's though .. I see no lightning

some more wips the only bits I used were from the sslyth and [img]inquisitor Loks retinue except the admek symbol under the =][= which is from the forgeworld techpriest oh yes and his mini flamer from his mechadendrites.
@ AnUnearthlyChilde Thanks mate
bits are :
DKOK flame team bottom coat.
Fogeworld gamesday edition princeps torso and boots
DKOK death rider ride captain right arm ( the one that usually hold the lance upright ) and pistol holster
Elysian command power fist.
Legbrace made from the cyberscroll of inquisitor Lok
Backpack = chaos renegade torso
Staff not sure .. dark eldar witches I think
=][= symbol inquisitor corteaz
base palsticard and rhino door ork axe bolts .

... that Cercropion (if scraper is right in his assumption...i seem to have lost track with all that plethora of names you come up with... what is with good names you can rely on... tom, dick and pete???) lol...
that model has so much of everything... but it doesn´t feel busy or overladed... verdigris is looking good on that groin protector...he is truly a sparkling example of the bigotry of the inquisition and all the xenohating... something like that still hunts down anything that might be looked at from a certain angle as not totally human...
don´t get me wrong... i really like it!!!

Aye up folks , Kinda Finished the Duke , just a few bits and bobs left on him , sorry for the bad pics , nearly all where rubbish ..
@ Scrazza
@ Vik Aye spot on with the old school, Dorien grey me Your also completely right about the oxymoron that is the imperium .. better the devil you know right ? glad you like the model mate , i enjoyed painting that , think its got me into painting again in general.
@Yodhrin Hey mate , well at least you don't have to paint em all up in two weeks Its been an interesting journey creating these , , the back story has to be more important than the mini
, I feel the model is a tiny part of the whole , and after investing so much time and energy in the story, the model has to match up .. some do this better than others, chiron is my least fave model , but story wise up there with the best.. i am considering improving the model or making it a fine cast to match the others, but tbh I am struggling finding another suitable model.
As vik says I am huge JB fan , some would say stalker potential I have large collection of his older work , been collecting since I was ten , now thirty six but all just scans from various magazines and rulebooks tbh , most of this stuff come from his sketchbooks . His attitude to art has inspired a huge part of my own artistic journey . .. Ideas equally as important as technique.. very dark and a little bit political Phiq over at blogspot http://phiqeke.blogspot.co.uk/ http://miniphiq.blogspot.co.uk/ has put together a great collection at gothic punk. http://gothicpunk.tumblr.com/page/22

Neil, enough with the intentionally awful photos! He looks awesome, but he's so blurry that its hard to make out any details - the eyes look deeply shadowed, and I can't tell if that's intentional character of poor light. Is that blood on his lip or some kind of boil (I'm hoping its a boil - what an awesome character feature that would be for a nobleman!)?

The eye shadow is a skunk stripe like Blade runners "Pris"

uuuuiiii! the blending of the blue is very nice!
the whole cuirass looks very good...and the slightly due to the boil rotten looking face together with the shadowed/blackened eyes gives this charcter a great air of dominance! tho he is very bright in colors this one emanates a truly dark air around him... i wouldnae want to face that one in a dark alley...!^^

I still maintain that your pics are rubbish, and posting my thoughts is not a renege on that
Love the eyeshadow - it's a really nice 'foppish' kind of touch. The kind of ridiculousness of a Georgian wig, but without looking silly. Really sells the character! I really think the blood was a great addition too, especially on the back of his white glove - a fantastic gritty contrast to his elegant dress uniform. I can totally see him taking a blow, dispatching his assailant, and then becoming mildly annoyed at the blood on his fine clothes as he wipes his lip

wow... when you shut yourself in in your mancave for painting you sure stay away for a long tie ...but when you come back you provide excellent eye candy!
dunno why... but again i have a certain feeling your minis remind me of certain popculture and Scifi characters...
the Souel...reminds me somehow on that morlock leader form one of the time machine movies... maybe due to the pale skin and the green and white combo in his cloth...
and the inq reminds me too of someone... and i am not thinking hellboy here only because of a big red fist... no someone else...
and the paintjob of socrates is very cool looking! the dirt...and then the still upper white half of the mini! top notch mate!
my only issue is with your medic... a splash of red would do him good... he looks a bit flat i think with all that green and no contrasting color...
but well this is truly a gang to be reckoned with

They look breathtaking together Neil! I absolutely love Chiron, for some reason - I think it might be the weathered look and the 'damaged' back story Socrates came out fantastically too - I wasn't expecting the red hair, but it's a great contrast to the robes. Great job with the white! I personally think Vendrake is looking a little flat at the moment - I wouldn't usually say, as I know you were rushing to get him done in time, but I also know the amazing standard your paintjobs can reach (still blown away by that ogryn!), and I think the character and mini you've made deserve the extra mile! Great skin tone on Soeul - totally fits the astropath 'off' feel. Amazing all round, in short!
Hope the INQvitational was as incredible as you were expecting - incredibly jealous that you got to go! I'll have to check Mol's blog when I get a chance.

Seeing those pics of you and PDH having a game makes me well jealous. Love the fully painted gang shot. They have a good range of colour to them and are more united by painting style than simple colour imo. It's interesting you went for a more functional look to Vendrake, the olive drab (Drab as in the colour, not an insult) makes him look like a very taciturn character. Is there more background behind this? I have been absent from the P&M scen for too long, and away from this thread for too long. Had a slightly frustrating experience with the infinity painting comp which put me off hobbying for a bit. Started a new project today, look forward to your input when i revive my blog. EDIT. Remember those uruk hai will be pretty short, unless of course you are going for 'Small man syndrome' cyber gladiators . Which i know somehow you'd pull off! EDIT. thanks for the mention in your blog mate! made me all misty eyed.

With contemporary /classic , that's just me being pretentious again I saw a nail painting in the art gallery and thought i like that should make a game board with a similar style.. combine it with classic sci fi tropes splash a bit of blanche weirdness and bobs your uncle.. a Pandoricalle hive board .. don't want to give too much away yet as i am not sure myself the direction I am going in tbh.. but I am trying to keep contemporary and classic as the theme, maybe weird board shape . mixed with classic munda paint theme. or maybe slightly baroque .. decaying splendour .. with sump seas thrown in.. watch a few sci movies for inspiration , eden log being the most obvious.. with a healthy dose of dead space 2 for now..
@rogue.. me too mate no plan as suche no big changes though , the board will be the main focus for me the cult will be there to provide 28mm sense to things..
@Perkustin , Hey matey . your welcome about the shout out mate.. have missed most of your recent writing , just haven't had the patience I used to have with blogging and tinternet..look forward to catching up with your stuff..
the Uruk hai are smallish .. same size-ish as death korps eleysians though.. so no biggee there , but the deldar are really tall so the orcs will be juves now .. and i will probably add a few goliaths for heavies to add variation ..

I didn't realise Tor Gillead was the terrain you were eBaying?! That's a real shame, it's a great piece of scenery - I hope you get a great price for it, and it gets the use it deserves in its new home Still, more space means more space for new projects! @Vit ha ha ha .. do you know a man with a van ;-)
@scarpper BJ thinks I should get p&p rates and do international sales to maximise my profit margins , think I will hire him as my manager when he leaves school.
more space .. clear desk clear head .. clutter stresses me out . even though i am so very messy .
@dst I hope I don't have to , but to be honest I am not a possessions type of a guys , and miss101 hates clutter..
surprised its lasted this long to be honest.. just feel like having de clutter and making some cash towards the new project as opposed to it costing me both time and money . only to be sold off half price in a few months time when I come up with the next money burning brainwave.

Egads, man... whatta dump! I love it!!
That sump thing reminds me of the Moby Dick-type *snicker* story in Necromunda, where dudes on skiffs go hunting in the sump for gigantic spider eyes. They pry them off as gems or something... and a big white nigh-indestructible one goes and rips them all to bits...
Either way, great looking sump!

Wow I am really sorry to see what happened to your enormous lasagne.
So this is obviously really cool, I am particularly impressed by your willingness to turn a 4ftx4ft area of your room into the world's most expensive yet disgusting looking table. I always really loved the sewer you made, will that get assimilated into this project?
It reminds me of Doctor Who, some of the names and the idea of people worshipping a tree in a spaceship that eats people. And the name has a real Lovecraftian vibe to it, as does the idea of these inbred mutants, I hope they have the Innsmouth look about them. Great stuff, two of the best possible things to draw parallels to.
A couple of technical questions if I may - how did you even make that water? Is it lots of packs of water effect all congealing in different ways? And what is the board for? I guess for Inquisitor games but is it part of some larger narrative or will it serve multiple roles or what?

sorry for the brief answers of late .. haven't had the energy for long winded replies.. will sort that out though. and will definitely make tutorial .. If not just so i can recall the process and what not to do again..
@ HF Izanagi that story sounds great .. do you have a link ? sounds like nasusica of the valley of the wind.
@rogue hey mate . its the toilet .. ermm.. its er.. some bits stuck together the cloth is just papertowels dipped in pva . a fe bits of toys stuck together using double tread plate and a few rivets from http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/
ww2 model jerry cans and bucket , farm toy milk container and the base is from a gw tank / chimera ? not sure picked up a load of roofs cheap on ebay.
more wip pics hear
@Bruticus "Wow I am really sorry to see what happened to your enormous lasagne. " vegetarian lasagne at that
The old sewer/ water treatment works .. has gone to pastures new.. .. both projects taught me quite abit about water effects ,but i still managed not to get the effect i wanted
the innsmouth look great thanks for the heads up .. a cross betwixt orcs and deldar at the moment . but that could change now.
quetion how did you even make that water? Is it lots of packs of water effect all congealing in different ways?
pretty much .. yep . woodland scenic relaistic water over painter liqyuid nails. windosr newton inks some rust effect stuff .bits of snow effect and some oils based stuff too, clear satin varnish.. ( that is actually opaque and craked to buggery and clear gloss varnish that just wont dry plus a gloop of pva.. not what i intended but hey its colourful. will do a tutorial i a bit . but more of a happy accident experiment
what is the board for? I guess for Inquisitor games but is it part of some larger narrative or will it serve multiple roles or what?
a bi annual game of necromunda set aboard ship in the warp.. PDH is bringing his scavvies too
@ Vit Hey mate ,, i do reference effluvia ..as it comes out of my mouth quite often will post up my refence as a mood board in abit along with some kind of list of what i did exactly.. like i said earlier though this is not what i really wanted .. but kinda burnt out with the thing for the moment.
@Hey ash high praise mate .. coming from a veteran builder as yourself cheers mate
@Skalk Hey sub welcome aboard mate.. hope you enjoy the writing as much as the pretties
@whalemusic hey mate .. glad you like .
@ CC , hey commander great to see you again.. and yes you get the cookie.. in fact as CC points out this is actually a giant expensive fly catcher .. .. i hate flies .. now i game game on there graves
@Dst Yep forgeworld zone mortalis.. for a change i had a few pennies spare and thought bugger it why not splash out .. its a lovely piece and i wanted it to make a space crusade board .. but then i chopped it up
@ bruticus .. i originally only wanted a small board ,, but then i read that necro is suppsoed to be playe on 4*4 size boards.. and then it started to get pricy.. its all the little bits that add up though to cover the huge playing area as you will know from your own terrain not the actual big pieces, I have found.

I want a bath after seeing this, it looks so dirty and grimy the little living nests are amazing you can actually believe that people are trying to survive on this board .
If you managed to create that effect by mistake, well I say feth up more often great stuff every where you look something else catches your eye, it is more a large diorama rather than a gaming board
Love the conversions as well never considered using Uruk Hai with other heads great call on that, work well as ratskins replacements.

Hey folks sorry for the delay between updates.. kinds got absorbed into research..
@ vIK QOUTE not complaining about the other stuff tho .. Not what i heard cheers mate .. the flash's of creativity are most often followed by bouts of depression and inactivity so it evens itself out .
@ Rogue Thanks rogue .. still appreciating the encouragement mate i do like terrain and really enjoy creating it ., i see it as telling the stories of the mini that might pass through it. i have tried to make this transportable and modular as well as being interesting to play on .. from any side .. it lacks height though for a regular necro board .. something i hope to change in the coming weeks.
@ HF many thanks for the link Izangi .. i really enjoyed reading that .. albino sump spiders here i come.
@spudkins cheers mate.. will definitely be done by the 6th of October..
@AnUnearthlyChilde No tree as yet i waiting on a product to allow me to visualise the tree as i saw it.. i have it now so the tree is next on the list. i dont think the tree will be huge though . i dont want it to dominate the board too much..
i like the idea of folks worshipping it because of what it does not because of its size.. ( leat thats what i tell myself )
@GiraffeX thanks mate .. never got round to that tutorial did i
@ Pdh Cheers Pete.. roll on october ..
@Baiyuan Hey .. Baiyuan great to see you posting again mate .. loving what you doing with your modular board mate..
@TGG Thanks man.
@ Dst qoute " Wait...you chopped up the WHOLE 4x4' ZM board " well its only 2 by 2 the mdf makes it strecth to 4by 4.
can anyone have enough crates and barrels ?
@Lone DD thanks matey .. i suppose it is a giant diorama tbh . that's how i see all terrain.. i see the design of terrain akin to video game level design . there is no reason we shouldn't have a board for every different battle.. well except time space and money
@ Hyenajoe mon amie the respect flows both ways .. many thanks.." bows even lower and removes cap "
@scarzza aye so should i cheers scrazza.
so now thats out of the way..
the sump finally dried so i cut it up and moved it off tha table .. so sick of staring at it . thought i would do the entrance next originally the pandoricalle was going to sit in front of the entrance.. now relegated to the interior ,,
forgot to mention the board is part of a water treatment works inside a huge gothic imperial ship that is now part of an even bigger conglomeration of space hulk /ark / Argo
i was inspired by this pic from one of my favourite films stalker..
and this pic from metro 2033 game
special thanks must go to the excellent Bruticus for sending me a wonderful care package of goodies to go on the board.. ( even though i failed miserably to return the offer .. coming soon mate i promise i already made use of the fantastic dozer blade and some pump station sprues..

Hey folks .. still chuntering on with the board .. not much progress as i am painting and detailing s i go ... whilst trying to find a happy medium with the board layout .. the zone mortalis lack of roof is creating a few obstacles. for addig height in other areas.but making sure the whole board works aesthetically is quite a challenge .. looking forward to doing some work on the pandoricalle or the tree soon... beein partuicullarly inpsired by silent hill other wolrd of late.. so some barbed wire fences are bound to find a way in.. the head/ skulls cleaning area is part of a larger idea of selling skull candles to the pilgrims .. and the food stuffs are going to be part of the trade for the travellers .. bring another income to the Pandoricalle clan..

This is very good neil - the details are special, real special. So jelly.
Urban decay is something we will all have to get used to seeing as civilization slowly falls apart so we may as well embrace its beauty and variety. There is a strange joy in beholding the end of something, seeing entropy enter a system. In fact I can recomend you a book if you are into the reading malarkey: "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman. It's fascinating.

Twas the harpy garpy and phrillabod,
gnolling vissibog in the vain,
when out jumps the bogey man,
blaxk as soot and makes his claim,
roll back ye sump crust thugs ,
back to yonder acid bogs,
and doth that armour twice as fast,
fore I lease the cerberdog,
eyes aswash with fear and fret,
those sump sea gypsies made away,
all hail to thee pandoricalle ,
and naer doubt a word you'll say.
Oileus.. cut the plascrete.. as instructed..
The heavy heraklees plasma torch making light work of the fallen rubble a detritus that was now strewn across much of the train bridge. The rubble must have come down in an Arkke quake after the last pilgrim run.
The train man.. thin and wiry with sneering yellow eyes.. cranked his leather neck back and squinted towards vaulted archways that raised up into the gloom above. The corroded metal bridge they had sat atop for the past candle .. creaked and groaned under its new found weight , swaying languid over the vast frothing sump below..
“quick now make haste, the Stymphalian birds will not wait forever.. Even as he said it a shudder ran his spine .. the brass beaked birds with razor sharp wings.. didn’t normally attack over the bridge.. but then again he didn’t normally spend this long on it..”
Why here .. of the all the places to be stuck.. right over the styx, no escape if the flock came.
His last journey was sound, no hiccups. He knew his route like a well worn boot..
leave the dunes via the dark arches tram terminal, creep past the sleeping gandy dancers then out over the sunken cathdra into the junkers scrap yards.. a quick change of rails. Pay the toll, buy the fuel, and then the simple and relaxing ride through the cankors black hill pipes and down into sump rails, what could be easier...
Pilgrims paid well for this journey, and they knew the risks. If the gandy dancers could be avoided then you were safe.. well as safe as you could be on rickety home made railcar.. in a crumbling flooded cathedral ..
The train man promised a shortcut .. that could halve a pilgrims journey avoiding the watery sump territories of the fearsome clock tower cathedra cult far below .A short cut that was looking increasingly long for the last three remaining heraklees ganger’s..
Oileus “Done!”
The last of the remaining rubble was sent tumbling into the sump far below as the train man ushered his passengers back on board the makeshift hand car..

Awesome, I've been waiting for this post! Well done on getting it finished, I can only imagine how much work went into it all.
I love all the additions since last time I saw it - the tower buildings look solid (or are they from a different set?) and the tree itself looks very sinister. I've just been trawling the other sites you linked looking for more pics, there is so much going on in each one. It's like you created a dingy little corner of Warhammer World specifically for JB's models to live in!
I think the spitted bug roasting on the fire with the moon-faced man nearby is a highlight, as are the shots with the decayed gun servitor looming in the background and the mummy with horns and bloody face.
But the best part is just whatever the hell you have done to make the rusty metal look exactly like rusty metal. Things like the zone mortalis blast door, the ferry and this doorway ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/419592-Yggdrasilliume.html) look so metallic I would be actually surprised to discover they were made from plastic/resin.
At some point when you have recovered from your ordeal I would really like a tutorial on how exactly you go about painting some of these effects. A lot of my scenery could do with a bit of this sort of grimification. It looks perfect. My pit slaves would love to live there!
I bet the games were a lot of fun, although I can't imagine drawing LOS was very easy! I've heard good things about using a dental mirror, something I might have to try myself.
Also, I find it hard to imagine PDH's models leaving Yggdrassillium with getting covered in filth.

Big up boss! That's an astounding board, and I'll be poring over the other links soon to drink my fill of lovely decay
I'm hoping you have lots of wip shots squirreled away for a rainy day...hey, look, it's raining
Sit back, grab a drink and a smoke and relax for a while. Then you can come and tell us all about it. It's a magnificent piece of work mate, sure it added a gak load of enjoyment and character to the games, and at least you've cleared Amber's living room before the holiday season hits us
Agree with Bruticus that the rusty metal is incredible, you need to share.

I totally agree ...but dang man, what a amazing table you have created there Neil, i salute you /salute. Having seen all the pictures on the other links i can imagine that i must have been an absolute blast to play on this baord...but even better...to have John Blanche playing along side on it...hihi (giggles like a little girl with exitment).
One thing i wonder, was the "official" photographer of the WD around to take some pictures for the next issue?...cause you deserve it. Take care and keep up with the brilliantly inspiring work...cheers

Hey folks , got a bit of time to reply now..
first off for the previous questions.. sorry for the late replies
@ AnUnearthlyChilde
Made in gb Thst, is the best bit of information for a long time!!!! I need something like this for my citadel walls!!!
Yep the crackle stuff is fun ..gloopy but fun.
@Bruticus
Thought so, seen it used to good effect on these guys. But does it flake off? Will it get scraped off by a model standing on it? Also your rust looks great, have you sealed it at all? I have had mixed results with sealing.
http://eyeoferror.blogspot.co.uk/
brilliant link love those nurgle guys cheers mate.
@ CC
Oh I have just run out of good stuff to say now. Well, just the usual praise, stuff about attention to detail, great use of bits, superb weathering, you know the drill...
Love the bucket with the skull in, nice touch!
cheers budddy.
@Dst
This is some of the most mind-blowing, creative terrain I have ever seen man! Damn fine job!
Thanks but You obviously haven't seen Dave Andrews stuff of late
@Tinfoil
Remarkable work. The atmosphere of industrial decay here is so thick I feel like I can smell it. Seriously, I'm downloading several of the last batch of pics you posted so I can study the technique.
Cheers you right it does smell.. especially the two part epoxy resin areas phew!!
@Vit Perfect terrain, nothing more to say, just perfect
glad you like mate..
@Monkey Beautiful scenes of urban decay as usual Neil
Still loving the railroad
And several pots of Tim Holtz just ordered
Just noticed your reviews on the paint mate, will have a proper look later..
' Girafx Thats looking truly amazing, I'm going to have to try and pick up some of that crackle paint and give it a go.
The skull in the bucket is pure class. Blood for the blood god
and khorne for the khorne flakes
@never was sick so much a pleasure to behold neil... and i hope you are in good spirits too!!! i atm deduce as much from these pics at least.... those worn down rails.... simply overwhelming...
and thanks mate!
this is going to get sigged for all the wrong reasons lol
never was sick so much a pleasure to behold
couldn't really chat before as i was too busy .. looking forward to some down time and painting minis on easy street, hope your well mate.will catch up soon.
@LDD I can smell the blood from here, this screams mass murder and decay LOVE IT JUST LOVE IT !!!!!
Your work is amazing and continues to get better, I really am starting to hate you but in a good way
thanks man apreciate it even if i don't comment as often i should these days ..
@baiyuan I'm not sure the world could handle that godlike abomination of hobby awesomeness...
oh i dont know ..i wear my best longohns for the occasion
@pete I wanna be, i wanna be like Neil...tried to get some crackle paint in Manchester today for a base. But no the cool art shop only have distressed ink and no paint. boo hiss. Oh well i will order online tomorrow whoot payday. Oh and buddy best Zone i have seen so far.
and at that point he hadnt even seen it
@ CC Hey good idea! Neil, I have just made an 'inspiration' folder on my laptop just so I can keep your pics for future reference!
you should try getting a gimme bar or something similar , saves loads on comp space
@Weety sorry for the late reply weets ,the bok sounds great , i ahve had no time for reading of late but now is a good time to sit back and chilax will have a looksee at the novel thanks
@skalk Solid work as always. Will echo same question as above- does the crackle continue to flake / peel after it's been applied? It's a great effect but I'd be bummed if it wore off over time. My game group can be rough on terrain sometimes.
yep its abit flaky i sealed mine with superglue.. well the really flaky bits anyhow.
@Ize Holy smokes! Neil, your manufactorum skills were beyond words when you did Tor Gillead piece, now they're just getting god like!
the only god of terrain is Dave Andrews .. all hail the master , not saying i wouldn't want to be sat at his right hand mind you
@;Iza Dammit... now I want a trainyard to fight on!!
Amazing stuff, Neil!!
-Remi
P.S. - Glad you liked the Sump Spider story! The one and ONLY story I remember from the Necro book fluff.
love the spider story, and made an effort it made it onto the finished board , Fulgrim added the moonface guy and they really worked together. cheers mate.
@lamahead Now thats looking gribbly. Have you looked at railway modelling stuff for inspiration?
yep loads of train stuff, i posted a blog about it on opus , some amazingly talented train hobbyists out their..
http://opusmaius.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/ships-and-trains.html
mr scratchmod is one and his guys work i found recently is stunningly real..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/45518221@N00/3250983207/
as i said apologies for the late replies just been too busy
so Thanks all for the new comments as well ..
@Bruticus
Hey mate , yep , it was a marathon and a sprint finish.. still not tidied up yet will take a week i reckon but looking at your stuff kept me on track, you have set the bar very high , and nothing but that chaotic attention to detail would do.
and it just takes time and time and more time and mess and arguments, and hating and loving and hating again..still not what i had in my mind but , i guess you have to be realistic , otherwise it would never end..
the most difficult part was the design , how to make a 4by4 transportable .. i failed miserably at adding walkways just not enough time, the block buildings you mention are warhammer worlds inquisitor terrain , wonderful cast buildings.
that made a nice backdrop to the board and gave much needed height.
the spit roasted spider is inspired by the story hf izanagi linked earlier not enough time to do the model justice , and the moon face guy is Fulgrims model , great innit ?
the blast doors were really easy, the zone motalis ones had a coat of woodland scenic snow effect and bicarbonate of soda sprinkled over a purity seal spray, then re sprayed with purity seal , when dry i basecoated with black and then used a hard brush to remove most of the flakes.. i then used turquiose washes for verdigris and model mates opaque rust effect for the orange rust.
the whole board got the bicarb and snow effect treatment.. i even used your method of spray crackle paints stone effect to give other areas a different texture , but that stuff takes and age to dry properly
your pitslaves are most welcome to yggdrasiliumme , in fact i think they live there already..
gaming was fun but truth be told i was too tired to really enjoy it properly , and there were so many other distractions even a giant game of apocalypse with dozens of titans , not to mention the minis.. and we all know i dont know any rulesytems other than spcace crusade space hulk and advanced space crusade, so pleas take pity on pete who had to put up with my languid dice throwing
still i beat him in our game though my illium leader crushed his hag in a proper oldies fight , like saruman and gandalf on the orthanc and watched as his mercs fled
peter is a filthy sod so his models can be clean
cheers
@bounty, cheers mate , super heavy too , when travelling on the train and taxis.
@Monkey hey mate , i could do with a smoke and drink come to think on it are you offering ?., yep loads of wip shots , will do a wip post soon, cheers, glad you approve mate , i know i cant impress you with my grammar , so one has to have something up ones sleeve.
@Giraffx Hey mate , thanks its a bit empty in parts , and was going to be a lot less than it is but,, i kept looking at bruticus's board and thinking i want it to look like that, still needs height .but i am happy with the overall feel , the sumpbridges came together at the last minute and i was over the moonface with them .and big pump thing over the small estuary was made a day before the game and painted about three ours before packing it away.phew!!
@BIG B Woyuld have been cool to see you gangers on it mate , if you ever over hear would love to get a photoshoot of them . So glad its over , i really don't have the space to create stuff like this , but who turns down such a wonderful opportunity.
@ Vit You win. Everyone else can quit 40k now. but what about the elder and tau and orks and nids and deldar and on anon....
lookingf forward to some simple stuff next , was thinking of recreating the praxus stuff with dkok , I have a few things to make for Mols next inquivitational event the requiem of madine but nothing eles planned so maybe back to my first love praxus or maybe a horus heresy space crusade remake .. tempting!
@Rogue ... Anything....  cheers mate
@whale .. loose your job self respect and any careerer ambition have far too much time on your hands and it could happen to you too For a long time this was going to be my farewell swansong to 40k .. I really wanted to concentrate on doing art for myself.. free of restrictions , but it kinda grew on me in the process and as much as i would like to move on concentrate on writing or painting or whatever, 40k is my comfort blanket and i dont think that will ever change,
maybe i just need to get something out of my system get a crap job and enjoy the simple hobby aspect of it all. instead of trying to turn hobby into my art.. i dont know .. i guess you do it whilst its still fun right.
@Commander , hey mate, blame bruticus and blanche not me
@Nerfest.. you welcome..
@PDH , ha ha , you were the best GM ever! Grabbing passers-by to control the gun servitor was inspired mate.. yeh divvy ! and they all still attacked Rise's gang lol
@Chelnov, thanks mate, I was so excited it was stupid.. I swear for some reason i behave like a total divvy when doing stuff like this.... ( whats that Amber .. I am a total divvy.. fair point )
It was a real treat to see the minis and the folks equally , John was such a gentleman .. and spoke at length about his hobby of converting minis as well as giving us a rare glimpse of some of his original artworks .. i was just sorry he didn't wear his cable wig and bionic eye implant..
i would never have dared dream when I started this blog i would get the chance to do any gaming , let alone with GW visionary art director .. i tell you folks its gone a long way in restoring my confidence i can tell you,,
watch out i will be getting a real job next.. ..honest!

Glad you enjoyed the off the cuff GMing. I hope for next time that I do it a little less off the cuff but with a few more surprises up my sleeve. Grabbing passers by was a bit of fun and made the gun servitor that little bit more random. The most worrying part was that dude who hadn't even been born when Necro came out. I am still surprised by the second guy attacked Rise's gang. I mean after that character assassination we gave him of Fulgrim
Funniest thing for me was Rise rolling double fumble followed by double fumble. Dammed luck hey. But I am still smarting over him trying to set most of my gang on fire and sniping my sniper. Boo Hiss

With stuff like that, you could likely make money on it. Then the issue of job versus enjoyment comes up, but it is worth considering.
