Absolutely Brilliant! Hecame/is coming together nicely. i love the choice of coloring on the sash and hat. After a quick paruse throught your blog i think its safe to say "subsrcibed" and ill be going back through. This Really is some top notch painting and i look forward to seeing more
Very nice. I think the green base edging distracts a bit though - possibly a darker green or, even better, a brown, might keep the focus firmly on the miniature. Of course, I realise this may not be a choice if he is to sit with other similar based models...
I prefer a black base, as I feel my eyes are more inclined to ignore its existence that way. However, I think a dark brown would work well too.
I would definitely change the green though, as it is so close to the skin tones that I find my eyes drawn to it, perhaps being an extension of the characters.
The green base color does compete with the O&G minis' skin tones but it was part and parcel of WHFB 6th Edition for which I'm now nostalgic.
If it's any comfort, the green base color almost completely disappears when the minis are ranked up in their movement trays (which do not have green edges in my army).
Ahh good call. Best to go with consistency of course. I don't know how nostalgic I am for old GW stuff. I used to hate their aesthetic when I was younger, though green base edges might have contributed
I actually quite like the old green base for nostalgia reasons too. When I was first looking through the GW window at these ridiculously expensive little men my poor parents had no way to afford for me, they all had green bases and dodgy little sculpts The first ever mini I painted ( a dwarf from my best friends set when I was about 7) had a green edged base on the picture too, but we had no green so I made it brown. Oh man I remember that dwarf. He was terrible.
Little Gobbo is finished now unless any tweaks need to be made, @Dysartes drop me a Pm if theres anything you want altered at all! It's never too late I tell thee.
I went with a really neutral and quite understated grey highlight for the robes, I didn't want them to be too far from basic black or he wouldn't fit in with all the other Gobbos.
Clicky for der big.

Also by virtue of grammar, since you're using a verb of being (is), then it makes the object of the sentence a predicate nominative, and thus interchangable
Also this thread need less grammar lesson, and more fancy pants goblins

Today is base spraying the colour layers on multiple Space Wolves, and starting on a new character model for J.B. He is going to be really interesting and J.B has some really cool ideas for him. I am thinking airbrushing his armor for that amazing powerhouse red might work, but I will have to give it some thought first. I will update with shots as I go but they may be hella boring, y'all been warned!

Everyone have a nice week?
I think we are prepared to risk being bored.
'Tis cold as robot balls in Germany this week. I hope that your workspace isn't as chilly. I moved my painting stuff out of the man-cave and up to the dining room so that I can work without freezing. Fortunately my red-haired lady isn't fazed in the least by my hobby.
it was 50 degrees here in Ohio yesterday, the sun was shining, I didn't wear a coat most of the day... I wake up to go to work this morning, only to find out we got like 3 inches of snow last night...

It is also cold as balls here, which is made even more infuritating as the first few days of this week were sunny and nice, and now everything is frosted over all day. Killer in a crappy little house like this, I have the fire downstairs burning all day and its barely keeping it above 2, 3degrees. Upstairs has electric heating but it costs so, so very much, so just trying to keep it tolerable up here. My cats have it the worst off, no fur means they have to wear the big thick jumpers I made for them out of a housecoat, which they are not amused by. So they are warm, but very very angry. Ahaha.

Urgh thats what its like here, except reply the snow with sheet ice D:
Unamused cats? How do you tell when cats are amused? The ones I've known have kept their mood range set between Enraged and Contempuous. I don't recall an Amused setting.
Well, hope you aren't miserably cold. I'm having a cuppa Earl Grey right now which will warm me up.
There's something wrong with you people living in sunshine wishing it was cold
Just got home from work, it's 6 degrees inside and the 'heating' has been on full for the last 48 hours constant. I have no water in the kitchen, cold water only in the bathroom and amazingly, hot water in the shower. That'll all freeze overnight and leave me with nowt in the morning though. And if I put a foot on the floor I can feel the heat getting sucked out of me.
Yeah if anyone would like to trade some degrees, I would be totally game. Ice on the windows and crappy cottage insulation = hrorrible.
Early days airbrushing done, working down the armor to a much darker shade using wash layers now, this dude is going to be pretty dark overall, with some really rich reds. Space wolves in stage 1 airbrushing which has to dry overnight so it doesn't flake, the shade I use for them is really odd when it comes to drying hard.
JB wrote: Nice! He looks warm. Too bad that he's not exothermic. EDIT: Arrgh...sleep monster is here.
He was on fireee, but I cooled him down with lots of washes.
Super crap photos, hooooo
JB, I am thinking his cloak should just be black too, would really help set off his reds and skin tones, and the book pages. It's up to you really! I went for the grey fur, thats just the base coat so it should still be nice and dark.

He's looking great! Go ahead and make the cloak black. It will make the red of his armor and the color of the book's pages pop.

Totally know what you mean on the sun front. I don't tan, my freckles just merge into one full body freckle that gives the illusion of a tan, then slowly shrinks back to normal size. Its actually horrifying. Anything under factor 50 and I instantly turn into a piece of well fried bacon.
I really like this guy too! But then again airbrushing on armor coats always feels a little like cheating to me, you can get lovely effects so quickly. Most of the time on this guy so far has been spent waiting on washes to dry, haha. It's cool to see how red he was beforehand though, I was hoping to frighten JB with the first shot as he wants him nice and dark ;D Trolololol.
JB wrote:

I think he is nice and bright already from the red and the sigils, so the black cape should really set him off.
The only thing I'm left scratching my head over is the odd little sash at his side, as that thing is totally not linked to anything on the rest of the mini. It's like the sculptor threw it in there to fill up some space. I'm really unsure what colour to paint it, it can't really be black as it will be against black, maybe the same colour as his pants will be? Urk. Awkward sculpt is awkward. Do you want the white trim on the cloth like in the pic you sent me? I guess the sash could be white then to tie it all in. But then the tassles.. this is super frustrating :(
JB wrote:

Ahaha, I keep my less SFW artistic ideas for media outside Dakka. Are you sure I can't fit one on? Maybe highly styalized? In reality though, Im thinking just text with a ornamental title to one side, slightly Book of Kells-y but obviously not quite as detailed.
Hmm...maybe leave the cloth black because the gray highlights/shading look better on a full surface rather than one truncated by a white trim?
It would also keep the focus on the upper half of the figure.
As for the sash and tassles, here's a crazy idea. Perhaps a dark purple color with some gold thread mixed in on the tassles.
Book of Kells-esque pages would be fantastic. One or two large letters, some scribbles for the rest of the text and then some Kell-esque knot patterns? Or is that too much?
Or I guess if you really want to try the highly stylized idea, put a pic on the left page of a Imperial Hive Spire with a few bits of letters and text. The Spire could be ambiguous as long as it will not get me tossed out of the FLGS.

OK I am loving the purple idea, its not too far from red to clash horrifically, and it will help slightly tie in the blue sigils. Lets do it! Gold tassles eh? This guy has style.

Ahaha, I dont think I would be able to paint small enough to make the spire look like a spire and not a very sickly mountain, some page decoration will likely be the way to go, especially as I am going to age the crap out of the paper and it will have a nice effect on whats painted on it.
It's time to get this guy onto my blu-tac topped paint pot to hold, I don't want to chip off anything while moving him around at this stage. Chipping off aribrushed paint is a nightmare, because trying to repaint it with a brush never blends in right D:

The Inquisitor is coming along nicely - JB, didn't the helmeted sculpt come with a sword originally, while the bare-headed one had the book?
I also wonder what Disgruntled Horse is up to now.
Dysartes, AFAIK both the helmet and bare head versions can come with either the sword or the book. Edit: Ok, looks like the GW website has them just as you described. I can only say that my helmet head guy came with the book but it was a used mini that I bought from a guy on Bartertown so maybe he made a swap??
You have to pin the book or sword hand onto the figure as they are separate bits.

Cutthroatcure wrote:I like the way that book is coming out, and I agree that maybe a black background may give you more of a pop on the model!
The book is now looking way book..ier. The black background did indeed make a huge difference, He's not dark enough to vanish in the black so Ill keep it instead.
Reaper Man 2020 wrote:I like the way that Inquisitor is turning out he looks cool so far! One of my favourite models too.
You can give kudos to JB for the updated colour scheme, I think he looks pretty cooly as well, its a super win mini.
So here is where he is now -
second shot is a bit blurry but gives an idea of what the book looks like. It has a calligraphic I in 3 shades of green and some margin colours. The I is for Inquisitor, and in no way for Ifalna. That was a happy coincidence. Yep. He is in the final stretch now so his proper final shots shouldn't be too much longer. The black cape really tied him together. Very happy with it.
Oh thats just regular old Blutac, any kind of putty works just fine. Mine just looks insane at this point as I use it for priming metal mini's too, haha.
If you haven't gotten to his base yet, could you do him a bit different? Given his color scheme, I think he'd look better with a base scheme more like you used on your Dark Eldar Wyches with black edges instead of my Mechrite Red scheme. And the ground scheme you used for the Dark Eldar was great except that I don't really need the green flock. He's going to be walking through a ruined city full of grey dust and ash. There won't be many plants there (unfortunately). So to summarize, something like your Wyches bases except no vegetation (or very sparse) and with more dark grey and less brown.
The Inquisitor is looking excellent love the deep red and black cloak. The book looks very well done as well, is that a picture of one of your cats in it?.
When you finish can we have a shot from behind as well?

Haha its clearly a learn to spell book for Inquisitors. C for cat! I will get some back shots too, the cape is the same colour on the back as the front, its quite subtle but nice.

AWESOME! I missed the final update because it auto-appended and didn't show up as a new post.
Finally seeing it this morning when I am mostly awake. The black base does make a difference and the overall effect of the colors is very striking. You turned my pipe dream into a reality. As Gitsplitta noted already, the book adds much to the piece. I'm glad the chap that sold me that inquisitor included the book instead of the sword that GW apparently packages with that mini.
How do you do that base scheme? I'm thinking I may switch some of my new figures to that scheme since I'm building a ruined Imperial City terrain set for my gaming table.
Gitsplitta wrote:Beautiful work Iffy. The red and purple are wonderful together and the book is the focus that makes it.
Kudos to JB for the purple idea, I was totally stumped for that sash because it felt so out of place. Adding the purple to the book tongue helped tie everything together and turned out lovely, as it is perfect binding colour to help with the red and extreme blue.
By the way Gits, I have your dudes pinned and ready to go, but I have run into a slight problem.
I am totally out of primer. Now normally, I could resolve that by just walking to a local FLGS or Art supply store, but I had a horrible realisation that there are no bloody flgs's in Galway, and I can't order in paints or primer because Ireland no longer allows liquid in the mail.
I admit panicking a bit when I realised this, but some lovely Dakka chaps also from Galway let me know that there is a sports store called Halfords that sell really great home brand primer, so I will be getting some of that this weekend.
I am going to have to ask a hobby store to order me in paints when I need replacements, that is bloody horrid. I miss having gaming stores :(
Rogue Wolves wrote:the inquisitor is beutiful Iff, nice one here.. although i understand how you feel you "cheated" but i say, still not alot of people can make it look that good even with an airbrush
Thanks dude! I think anyone who has used an Airbrush feels slightly like they are cheating. Getting results that make you think " That would have taken me so much effort to blend up with a brush.." are a bit jolting at first, but I have to remind myself there is still some decent skill involved. Airbrushes are, em, very fickle.

Yessss! So glad you like him! I totally agree that the book made a big difference, if he had a sword he would not be nearly as engaging to the eye. It's something you so rarely see, and especially with nice aged pages, the way they should be! I think he will make a really nice eye catching mini for the army, and he is very strongly sealed so he can handle being played with without any problems.
JB wrote:How do you do that base scheme? I'm thinking I may switch some of my new figures to that scheme since I'm building a ruined Imperial City terrain set for my gaming table
It is a very simple, very nice scheme as it really does suit anything, and puts lovely emphasis on bright colours. Just base as normal with sand, and either do it before you prime black so the sane gets coloured too, or give the sand a layer of unwatered black ink you can get from most stationary stores. It is dirt cheap and you only need a little bit, and I find it also dries slightly tacky which helps keep the sand on.
You then just wait for it to dry properly (don't start painting too early or the sand will come straight off when you add pressure ) and start drybrushing up very dry layers of Ghost Grey, I use vallejo but I am pretty sure the citadel version is.. ghostly grey. It's great because it is very pale but has very good pigment, so you get a nice strong contrast
Tidy it up with black around the outside and you are done. Very simple, quick, and effective. I do like to add grass tufts, but that could just be me being mental.
Today is starting on weathering the space wolves and starting on JB's other character standard mini. (sorry gits, cant do nothing till I get primer :( ) I also have another awesome warmachine ready to get started on, so I might do some parts of him in between.. the first sold near instantly and it is very tempting to get him up on Ebay asap to try for a little needed cash.
Man... that's quite a conundrum for a professional painter Iffy... sorry to hear that. No great rush on my figs though. Do them whenever your muse calls to you.
Suck about the primer thing, surely there must be a way you can get some.
Im sure ive heard of primer with different stuff in it that means it can be sent overseas. Theres always the option of getting airbrush paint to prime with the ab.

Ireland has a complete ban on any liquids in the mail, so thats paint and primers out of the question regardless of what they contain. I have to get them from stores. There are no flgs's here, and no Gamesworkshop :S
I've chatted to some people and can get ownbrand primer from Halfords, but my only option for paint is to head to an art supply shop that sometimes stocks Citadel, and make requests for what I need. It is bloody pathetic.
I cannot comprehend this ban. It is completely and utterly pointless. I've contacted An Post and they couldn't give me any explanation bar " new EU laws". EU laws my ass.
Was there some kind of giant increase in the amount of small paint pots in domestic post terrorism that was striking fear into the heart of Ireland? No. So what is the point.
Don't get me started, I am seriously enraged. I knew there was a ban from a while back when I tried to send Gitsplitta a load of vallejo paint, but I'm only feeling the brunt of it now that I can't even resupply from Ebay :(
It must be an Ireland only kind of thing. I have ordered a few bottles of Vallejo primer through the mail here in Germany. I think I bought them from Maelstrom but maybe it was Wayland - one of the English mail order sources. I can also buy it from a local FLGS but they always seem to be out of primer when I need it.
Just throwing a pic up of this guy while a take a break. Skin and black armor is done, his skin has a really nice finish so I will get a better shot soon once the cape is all done

It's supposedly most of the EU, but I call bullcrap on that one. It is clearly being enforced though as I have seen specific notices from sellers on Ebay saying they can no longer ship to Ireland/Uk :S Bloody enraging. I can't even get my pal back in Cork to mail me some from his store.

That Guy™ is a freaking lovely model. The updated shots show his skin wayyy better, I took the time and got the photos right. He has a nice warm skin tone, and it is very, very smooth. Plays off the cold grey highlights and super strong cloak well.
The eagle will eventually be lovely, he is slowly getting into detail stages now I'm thinking of painting little feather details on his primary feathers as a wee bonus.

And a good few spares, so I should be ok for a bit. The only ones I am going to have to refresh soon are basic black, white, and washes. Hopefully the art store I need to visit can order them in for me :(

May I ask how you've done the skin on these guys as it looks really real lol. I have some guys coming up that will need a bit of flesh painting and would really like to do something similar.
Cheers Gir! This guys skin recipe as is simple as it gets, the real trick is patience and very very thin highlight coats.
-Tallarn flesh, followed by an unwatered flesh wash.
-Start building up highlight layers with a thin layer of tallarn again and paint it carefully so you are manually leaving shadowing, not just recesses. This is the real trick to a natural face. You can't just leave recesses, you have to leave areas that would be shadowed too. Like slight forehead darkness over the brow, the jaw where it curves in to the cheek, places like that.
-Keep each highlight layer very thin and do multiple gradiated layers leading up to a rather pale mix of tallarn/white for extreme areas like the nose tips, eyebrow curves etc.
- Paint the final layers using natural strokes, make sure nothing is painted on squarly. I use fine horizontal lines across the head for the last few layers, which leaves that very slight forehead wrinkle effect.
I'm making ti sound way more complicated than it is, just take your time, water your layers, and try and paint organically, not just leaving the wash to shade recesses only
CalasTyphon216 wrote:Coteaz looks pretty good in black rather than gold

Kudo's again to JB for the colour scheme, I just tweak it a bit to help it match together on the mini! I am looking forward to seeing him finished too, I really like him.
These pictures are giant -
He is starting to come together now. Really going to work on getting those golds up to a super finish.
Oh and JB, about the hammer. Using the same technique as the shot you sent me, how about I go for the same blue to white highlighting for the power effect as on the Inquisators Insignias? Would definitely be an awesome contrast, and would tie the pair together if you are using both
He looks amazing. Really loving the cyber-eagle too.
Inquisitor Coteaz, AKA "That Guy™", is one of GW's better releases for the Grey Knight line. Oddly enough, I got the figure for free from my old FLGS. The store manager gave it to me as a bonus when my wife bought more than $200 of figure cases and foam. I did pay full retail for the two Jokero and the Astropath.
If I can't buy liquids through the mail while I am in Europe, I should be OK. The FLGS in Heidelberg carries GW, Vallejo, Army Painter, and P3 paints. It doesn't have Reaper colours but I have stopped using those anyway.
Your hammer idea sounds good to me though I admit to some apprehension that the hammer will overwhelm the face, eagle head, and the golds which are really boffo.
EDIT: I almost forgot to ask that you do That Guy™'s base in the same scheme as the other inquisitor.

I delayed replying because I got into a crazy painting zone and got tons more work done on this bald beaut.
On his way to final stages now, I'm picking out details mostly at this point. The eagle now looks like an eagle, bar his second head, and I don't think the hammer detracts too much focus from the face, I went very easy on the colour and kept it super minimalistic.
That Guy is looking superb! Understated hammer is perfect. It's menacing without overpowering the more important elements of the mini. We'll just assume that it glows more once he flicks on the "SMITE" button.
As for the video, it did make me laugh but after years of Bob Marley and Ozzy Osbourne, I'm used to not knowing what the hell people are saying. Then there are the Scots, the French, and the Swabians...

Yay! I kept the hammer as understated as I could while still having it blend all the way up to skull white, and it came out well! I'm really thrilled. The only thing abut him I don't like are his skulls, because they have absolutely no detail. None at all. They are like flat discs with 2 eyeholes. I'm trying not to emphasise them for that one reason, their actual sculpt lets the model down a little bit so I don't want the eye to be drawn to them immediately.
They aren't terrible, they just don't live up to the quality of the rest of the figure :(
In other bizarre video news, I watched The Thing 2011 the other week and tracked down a vid showing the actual animatronics and clay mannequin design. It is AMAZING. Such a shame they covered a lot of it with CGI, but I couldn't help but think what absolutely amazing Tzeentch/Slaanesh demons these could make!
There is one that is basically a woman bent backwards with a gaping maw having opened in her chest, and if that was released as a collectable figure it would be a really brilliant Keeper of Secrets :O
I guess this could be a bit nsfw as it has scary monsters, depends on where you are working, so just keep that in mind before clicky!
Going to finish That Guy Malgus now, be back in a wee bit
wow he looks fantastic.. (my new, new favorite model ive seen on this blog) i just love the imluminating blue hammer compared to his black and red wardrobe
Eldrad40k wrote:I like how the black has some depth and the heads on the eagle have some great detail. Awesome. I found the skulls were hard to get right too.
The skulls are a pain in the bum :( Surprised that such a lovely model had them just stuck on. They look like the sculptor forgot them and just threw them on top at the last minute.
Rogue Wolves wrote:wow he looks fantastic.. (my new, new favorite model ive seen on this blog) i just love the imluminating blue hammer compared to his black and red wardrobe
Thanks RW! The hammer in the pic I was sent to follow the scheme of was originally red, but it just melded in too much with the rest of the mini and did not look as nice. The blue is a contrasting colour but compliments the grey highlights as they are both cool, the rest of the mini is very warm, so it stands out without being too eye catching.

Peragus Empire, Seth'a legacy. Main is chilling out at 50 just crafting till some more casual content comes in as after 6 years hardcore raiding with WoW, I am totally burned out. Leveling up alts now and going crazy over the storylines. Can't wait for the legacy system to start pumping out fun rewards.
Coteaz is actually done now, just finishing up his base and I will post shots soon very happy with him, bar those annoying skulls.
Awesome models, and awesome video! I can't believe kids today have not seen Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. There are lots of Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch around where I grew up and used to live, and sometimes the old guys... well taking 7 years of German in school helped a lot, let me tell you. Of course, mentioning it sounds like German doesn't help... they don't like that.

I know all about accent overload, Dublin has the most incredible variety in accents I have ever heard considering how small it is.
The difference in the accent of two people who live only 3 miles apart can be immense. Inner city Dublin is a language all to its own, seriously. When I get very angry or drunk enough it breaks through and people have no idea what I'm saying. A while back I was at a house party and it ended up that me and my friend Kev were the only people able to hold a conversation with each other, no one else could understand either of us anymore after a few drinks. Hilarious.
Sorry...as a long term Eve player I am legally required to look at WoW in the manner that Disapproving Horse looks at everything
As to Coteaz' skulls, I think of them as stylished skulls - similar to Spawn's (iirc), he's too cool to go around having the same ol' skull bling that every other bad-ass mother-fething Imperial agent wears.
Yes, monkeytroll, there were - when I first started casual raiding with Karazhan, boss fights such as Moroes, the Opera event and Prince Malchezaar took months of practise to get the tactics right before we were able to progress.
By all accounts, though, things have gotten less tactical with later releases.

Yeeepp. Cata hit, and I realised I just didn't care anymore. WoW's still a great game, it is just not the same game I used to love. I couldn't pin point the exact moment it changed for me, it's been very gradual.
monkeytroll wrote:There were tactics in WoW Sorry...as a long term Eve player I am legally required to look at WoW in the manner that Disapproving Horse looks at everything
Oh there were crazy tactics back in the day of 40mans with healing rotas and organising people into exact time frames to move out and drink is a circle rotation while taking on bosses that took 40 minutes, yeah. It just got easier and easier to allow more of the playerbase to see endgame content, which makes perfect sense tbh, it just made a lot of people get sick of it.
monkeytroll wrote:As to Coteaz' skulls, I think of them as stylished skulls - similar to Spawn's (iirc), he's too cool to go around having the same ol' skull bling that every other bad-ass mother-fething Imperial agent wears.
Haha yes, either that or he is exceptionally old school and everyone else copies his terribad skulls but did a better job of it. That would explain his angry face.
So he is all finished and I am super happy with him. His matte varnish is showing up very reflective in the shots for no apparant reason, I think it is the black armor perhaps? It's not remotely reflective in real life, he looks the exact same. Hmm, it's very strange honestly.
Oh well, I would rather have slightly shiny shots than lose his paint in transit! He already has very slight loss on the back of his fur which I have to touch up from before the varnish. Curse these metal mini's and their delicateness.
Spectacular!! He looks great and much better than the standard Coteaz. Not to poke the 'Eavy Metal painter in the eye but I REALLY didn't like the way Coteaz was painted in the IG Codex (and on the GW web site).
For me, everything looks wonderful but my faves are his face, the cyber-eagle, and the contrast of the brilliant cloak with the dark armor.
Now you've got me thinking that I will have to find some henchmen for him. After all, someone has to tell him about his skulls and it's not going to be me.
Gitsplitta wrote:Just nice Iffy... just nice. Excellent work on the mutant bald eagle by-the-way. I'm sure the inquisition won't mind that one bit.
I was thinking of just going for bog standard brown for him, but the white worked nice as a focal point for that arm If I was going to paint an eagle and did not have to worry about how it would fit with the rest of the mini, I would totally paint one as a harpy eagle.
Best eagle. Imagine one of those High Elf Gryphons with a Harpies markings fading into an ocelot cat. Oh my...

The red was super fun, getting a lot of practice with cloth recently and it feels great to start seeing some improvements. I always found red SO hard to paint, I remember my first real brick wall in painting was trying to paint up a Khorne lord for my chaos army and having to get a GW staff member to tutor me on how to paint up red. I prefer how I do it now as opposed to the agonising amount of red ink I used to have to use, ouch.

I think the amount of gold he was painted with was just really off putting. The only time I feel ok seeing a mini with that amount of gold is if its a Sang Guard, Lizardman, or you know, the Emperor. I think I might just find it a bit tacky from playing against dwarven armies where absolutely everything was solid lumpy gold and it enraged my delicate Chaos Undivided senses.
I think you are going to like him way more when you get to see him, my shots never really do the models justice, and likely won't untill I get a camera specifically tailored for macro shots. Which is unlikely to happen anytime soon unless I win the lottery.
The Jokaeros could totally be his henchmen, he would never be able to get angry with them even if they were making fun of his playdough skulls!

If you are ever in SWoTR and decide to piss around on the Republic side, hit up Kriegchen or Meg on Thana Vesh. We can go get curbed stomped in PvP together or something.
*L* Well, we wanted to actually queue for PvP and get games. I was told that was a serious issue for the Sith due to everyone rolling Darth Balls. On the other hand, we get smacked around a lot because everyone is level 15 on our teams and doesn't know what they are doing. I can't imagine what compelled them to just throw everyone into the same game regardless of level. Even WoW got that right :(

I rolled Darth Balls. He's a cool guy, but I went full tank spec because I like to torture myself like that.
The pvp system was a clever way to make sure everyone can always get a game, all your damage scales to 50 regardless of level, right? Cept the lack of abilities is a bit of a death sentance, haha. I think people would prefer it over waiting 4 hours for a match though.
GiraffeX wrote:

Oh crap you are right. Maybe my camera is some kind of chaos spawn. Maybe it was once a great champion of Chaos, who has been afflicted with so many gifts that he became unstable and mutated into a small Canon. That is pretty harsh. I guess it would explain why half the shots I take have horrific monsters in them for no discernible reason.
I dunno, I think the PVP is suffering a great deal from the rank and gear imbalance. They do jack your abilities and base stats up to level 49 levels, but not having some of the key class abilities really hurts, as well as not having access to better gear or complete sets.
My guess is that they wanted to keep server populations lower, which conflicted with the ability to have level tiered pvp, but I just don't know that it was a good trade off. WoW seemed to pull it off well, and WAR was just amazing for PvP, at least the first 30 levels or so.
Still, the game is a lot of fun, and the PVE is great for me. The lady wife, she wants to make people cry and rage quit in PvP, and the system just doesn't seem to lend itself to it. :(
I think it's going to even out nicely as the game progresses, it feels at the moment like it was a band aid to prevent queue times and will likely be changed once the level brackets start to even out
Or I hope so anyway.

I've been thinking of trying my hand at making some basic painty tutorial articles for Dakka, untill I eventually get a decent camera and can start recording as I paint. What are the kind of things people really appreciate when it comes to articles? I can't help but think that the real basics like " How to highlightl cleanly in 4 layers" and " Basic colour theory" would be the kind of things people would find most useful.
As a new painter (actually trying to look decent when painting) anything works for me ... but i have trouble with highlighting ... eyes ... gems ... etc...
I think a basic highlighting article will be the way to go then, there are some super easy ways to get really nice finishes with only 4 layers from base colour to finish Hopefully some peeps find it useful.
Also, noticed a lot of Dakka girls have been sexying up their avatars recently, so I figured I should go ahead and make mine infinitely hotter. yeah gurl.

Ah. Ah yes, I see. Haha, that is pretty offensive. I don't think wanting to read legible English is something limited to only older users, I don't know anyone who would prefer txt speak over remotely correct typing.
Horseflesh tutorial was mentioned by someone in mosh pit, I think: for me, a "black" tut. Your work remains outstanding; I only tend to lurk as I find it hard to make C&C!
I would appreciate a color theory tutorial. I think I have a book or two on the subject, gathering dust somewhere. I just can't be bothered to read them unless they talk about tiny war mens.
Colour theory is great fun because there are so many amazing free programs out there that really help out getting to grips with it.
Trying to understand it by just reading is very hard, but being able to manually check triads and complimentary/clashing colours for the shade you want to work with by only choosing the colour on the page is awesome. I'm doing up a very simple beginners guide to painting at the moment, debunking a lot of the stuff I think beginners get caught up on and showing how you can get really nice results with very few paints just by knowing some tips and tricks.

Its hard not using txt speak when you can't speak English all that good. I blame the public school system for not breaking cell phones in front of the whole class. But English is a hard thing to speak, and me still don't do it right some times.
You should do a tut. on shading with out an air brush. Every tut. i see is using an air brush, and i don't know about you guys but i can't find the money to play the game and buy an air brush. Maybe add a section about colors that you should use to end up with a certain color, basing colors and layers to end up with a certain color and high lights.
I agree that there doesn't seem to be many tutorials on how to highlight and shade with basic brushwork, but that could just be me being an eejit and not finding very many general ones that arent aimed towards specific minis ><
I am trying to type yp this article now but wow.. this is confusing. I am afraid to save anything incase it auto creates a post and auuugh my poor little brain.
Aye I think that is the best idea. I think I may have just been overwhelmed with all the new info and it is not actually as complicated as it seems.. hmm.
Starting to actually look like a functional article now, but then again I still have to upload all the pics and fit them in hah.
I covered basic Highlighting, shading, drybrushing, and use of small pallets with nice results for tabletop. Tried to keep it super simple but as informational as possible. That was fun. I am now crazy tired.

Once that is done I will post pics, the mud weathering is surprisingly subtle till it has rust and then is finished off with badab..
Thanks for the comment on the article, I am happy people like it as I really had no idea what I was doing and just tried to get everything useful I could think of jotted down in it >< I will definitely be putting up more as I go, and hopefully video tutorials by April!
I caved and did a GW order for primer and washes. I realised that I have to restock on washes which would mean finding a hobby shop and asking them to order it in.. so screw it, I availed of the free GW shipping (which won't be stopped by that stupid no liquids law as it is not "domestic" post like it would be with Ebay purchases) and got everything I need + a unit of Vampire knights skeletons for my partner. He wants to start painting and over the next month will have the time to finally try it out properly yay.
I still cannot believe how much wash this dread used up...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so, heres how far I got tonight. Super quick shots as I really need to sleep.. sorry!
Devlin mud wear added, rust drips added, black slash and burn marks added which will have silver metal sheen on top to mimic paint chipped, generally just 10 times dirtier.
Couple layers more badab and mud to go. Once thats all done, its onto his metal highlight layers, and glow effects. I leave all the bone/fur till last.
The boys so far, rust ink finished on 2, 2 still to go, then its paint damage/metal effects and some final badab+Mud layers. Skin last on these dudes, which is rare for me.
Some shots of that gorgeous shield and shoulder mini -
All shoulders will have the same freehanding and power effect as on the original one of these dudes I painted as the base -
Trying to convince the owner to let me base them with pure white snow effect + the odd blood spatters. I think they are totally dirty enough to clash really nicely with it.
Cutthroatcure wrote:How do you get your gold to look like that?
It's Vallejo liquid gold http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/gb/liquid-gold-gb.html painted from the upturned lid (for max pigment) and with a tiny bit of meth spirit added. It goes on like a mirror but is VERY messy. As I continue to wash and age it, it will dull down like the finished wolves colour, but for now it really is that insanely reflective! Badab and devlin work wonders on it, as does scarring it with fleshwash ink. Really cool stuff.
Rogue Wolves wrote:wow, i like it alot, i really love his face
He has an angry little face, I have 2 others who are pretty much finished and I will get around to taking shots of them, one based off a friend of the owners Trying to give them all variants in skin tone so they don't all look the same, but lots of blondes and redheads!
JB wrote: Wow, the golds and the weathering are wonderful. It's almost a shame that the SW have that yellow shoulder pad. I know it's their signature look but it siphons off some of the energy from the gold.
Cheers JB! The yellow shoulder pad is a bit eyecatching alright, but I think it helps them feel like a co-ordinated unit to some extent. Freehanding on the wolf is also.. kind of fun! (Primer is now processing and should be here soon enough, your little unit has not been forgotten, promise!)

Who's leaving? WHO'S LEAVING?? /takes out knife
logg_frogg wrote:They are really starting to pop! I can't wait to see that big fur banner painted! wonderful stuff!
The big banner is going to be lurvly, still thinking of designs. I might freehand on a wolf? I may freehand on the owners face? Who knows! He is meant to be to character standard but I am pushing these a bit further as the owner is a really good friend and an all round awesome guy. Now I just have to convince him to let me base them.. lewl.
I also just finally googled what the giant jar of Gel Denso on my desk actually was, and it seems it's a really decent glaze and water effect medium?! Oh wow! It is the matte version but I am sure a layer of extreme gloss on top will make it work wonders. I want to try it out but it is pretty daunting as I can't find any tutorials. Hmm.
I've found some water effects tutorials, but this one seems very specific. Its called "Gel Denso" and from what I have seen messing with it, hardens into a slightly stretchy clear resin with a mild shine.
I am pretty sure I can just layer it on and get water effects that way, or at least it seems so having layered some onto the top of a pot.
Hrmm apparently it's also known as *extra heavy gel*
Extra Heavy Gel #26.535 Transparent gel of highest viscosity maintains its volume in high peaks and reliefs. It is used as an additive to other products to extend them and increase their transparency and strength. Mixed with colors, pigments, sands and earth texture this gel creates a strong and adherent base for dioramas. Packaging: In 200 ml. pots (6,75 Fl. Oz.) and 35 ml. (Ref. 26.591).
So in a nut shell you can miz paint or other pigments and media with it to get firm, translucent, coloured paste to mould with.
Ahhh nice one, I searched up the ref number on the vallejo site and its
-Heavy Gel Matt
Heavy acrylic gel that dries translucent and completely matt, has more body and strength than Acrylic Artist Color, and is excellent for holding peaks and volumes without buckling the canvas. Mixed with colours it extends them, and increases their viscosity, volume and matte finish.
So it looks to be all purpose.. blob. I mixed some into a peak on a paint pot and it did exactly what it said, dried clear and matt. I bet I can do some fun stuff with it.. be really great for mixing in greens and making slimy pools.
Take the breath mints, but when they're not looking spit them out and stash them in your pocket. One of the guards has a thing for mints, you may be able to use them
oh the guards are no trouble, if I want out my mini-conversionbeamer can make nifty holes in both guards and walls! thus you can escape through them! .. unless you getstuffed in the 4x4 box.. it has AV14 and is tooo damn clooooose!
Now i know posting on this thread is going to destroy my blackberry, (it's only just hanging in there with the emails from Gits and various other mental blogs on here,) but I have to come support this madness/beautiful painting.
...p.s. whats wrong with you all, eat the damn mints! The Man doesn't feed you mints, only nice people who are truely investing in your best interests give you mints.
(*turns to the Man*, 'Did I do that OK? Can i leave now? Please? it's cold in here. =[ ')

Eep! Put that thing away! Not only is someone going to get hurt but nobody wants to see that!
and mints are nasty..... and they scare the goblins.... I like the nice bright skinned goblins....
Noooo! the machine calls ussss back.. it wantsss tanksss and armorssss.. the nasty red priestsss makes usss sit in the box and tells them secretsss, it isss not theirs to have! no-no! Dead mind-flesh they are, nothing new-new from them.. they just take and take and hoar and hoar and stick papersss and runny light-sticks on my pretties! pours oil on my electronics and fill their holds with ash and smoke, they cage the minds of I make from silican and gold, sparkling with washes of electron-streamssss thievessss and ssscoucdrelsss.. but we are patient.. yessss.. we will be freeee! and then.. and THEN! I see someone else doesn't like the taste of mints either
Nasty mints! only insane and dentists like the mint! .. wich is the one and same thing come to think of it but that's beside the point.
we like the taste of gold and liqourice though.. but no gold for us no-no! not even a little taste of the black gold.. just ikky mints all day.. we stuff them in J-paint's egg-and-tuna sandwiches.. that's why he twitches so much and buys a blackberry.. he getsss the double dose..
Damn, you're in the other place. Okay, don't try and bribe the guard with mints, I thought you were somewhere else. The guard you've got hates mints with more passion than the loved-up offspring of a passion fruit and a passion flower that's been dipped in pure passion juice has for it's beloved.
What you need to do there is keep the mints in a small metal box that can be made air-tight, with two drops of November rain and three drops of purple rain. That should start to give off acetylene gas after a few days, use it wisely.....
Just popping in to say I have been Awol as a magical surprise gift arrived, a Wacom tablet, meaning I have spent the last couple of days drawing awful doodles which has left me with the dreaded "claw hand" syndrome.
If you keep up the minty freshness, I will have mini pics tomorrow as a tasty reward.
Just keep in mind that too many mints can give the you the poops, and you will not feel so good.

WHAT.
Last time I checked that was like. 92k??! HOW DID I GET SO MANY SO FAST. I HEART YOU ALL. Oh man I was going to do a stupid Kirriban for 100k, crap I have to think of something. Likely simple sketch related so I can get some practice with my tablet..
Someone give me ideas for a very simple competition we can run, I was going to have the first person to message me with a shot of 100k views as the winner BUT I CLEARLY RUINED THAT.

RW, I think everyone secretly likes the poops as long as they are not too overpowering. I once got food poisoning while on a 4 hr bus journey with no toilet. Oh man. Oh.. man.

Spearmint Mento's are divine, but perhaps a bit addictive.
OK I have to stop drawing now, making loads of progress with each image as I try new things, but my hand is a shriveled talon and I want to be able to paint for some updates tomorrow
A friend of mine makes his own chilli vodka for use at his bar - I think he vies it as a challenge to get it as hot as possible whilst still remaining legal.

That's nice for you, prime.

Time for a technical question for the hostess with the most-est - Ifalna, do you have any suggestions/recommendations when it comes to making black hair look good? I'm currently working on Valeria Alvaro from the Iron Kingdoms RPG line, and I was wondering how mest to make her hair look vaguely realistic.
Weeell.. that little american flag there means you probably mean an american car.. so that's what? flaky sludge-paint, 2mm plastic in the hood and an engineblock made from aluminumfoil and pressed carton? that's no biggie! some medium grade vodka will eat through that like sulphuric acid through a piece of paper.
Up here we drink stuff that will kill the french if they contact the fumes and gets the irish drunk as leprechauns with just a sip.
But the irish love their brown light-beers so I guess iffy wants her Guinness.
Hahah, oh you guys. I love coming and checking this blog as part of my morning routine, it has become a little highlight of my day, so it has!
GW parcel arrived today!
PRIMER. PRIMER EVERYWHERE. I am so happy, oh wow. Primer. Yes. So good. Worked out not too bad as the shipping was free, and as it is coming from a company and not domestic post, the liquid ban does not apply. Stupid liquid ban. Uggh.
Gitsplitta wrote:First person to post an image of your favorite booze?
YES. Lets do it.
I believe I have mentioned my tipple of choice a couple of times in this blog, first person to post a pic of it gets a sketch of their choice with my little tablet and terrible digital skills. I am not very good but it might end up funny, so why not! I will do a proper commission Kirriban for 150k, so make sure to remind me if we start getting close ;D

Now that sounds good, mint leaves as well, and cinnamon sticks.

Your friend is clearly an excellent practical joker, and it sounds like that is a very fun bar!
@Prime, Irish Poitín is a good example of that. It was illegal for a very long time but ofc was still totally available if you knew where to look. It is like drinking Satan. I'm not sure if it is even edible or if it is now just considered a dare for when the night is getting long and needs some spicing up.

Wow, she is looking really good Dysartes! Black hair is awkward, don't go near it with a grey or it will age her horribly, stick with a dark brown highlight, or my favourite, very dark blue. When you see real glossy black hair in real life its shine in sunlight is generally a blue or brown, never a grey.

I dunno man, I'm pretty hard to get drunk and last time I did I ended up with a WoW npc who sells booze named after me, so I must have been some kind of drunken Messiah who caused a booze fueled rapture, I can't really remember the details bar that mixing Guinness with shots of extremely hard liquor all night at the insistence of equally drunk friends who want to see "what will happen" is a terrible idea.
Also no, Guinness is not my favorite, it is tasty and lovely alright, but not my choice for relaxing with a movie.

Sounds like a cue to bust out the P3 Coal Black, then.
@Vitruvian - Wouldn't you just refill the bottle with more vodka, and possibly another chilli?
lol, little cat!

Fruity lovely nommy drink! I miss being able to get giant jugs of cocktails with dinner in Captain Americas in Cork, I need to start getting my cocktail drink on again :(
I'm sorry I didnt post these last night, I got loads of work done but then just fell into bed and passed out without taking shots, I was super tired :( Today I finished off the golds, finished off some of the silvers, started the glow areas, finished all the armor weathering, and started off on the shoulder pads.
Here is everyone where they are now
There will be glow effects on the shields which will alter the shine on the silver, also a layer of badab to help too
Primed up loads of mini's with my lovely NEW PRIMER today, the fumes were intense! Aww yeah.
I would also like to thank everyone who has been posting a lot on this blog recently and keeping it running in between updates. You guys are super appreciated and I really enjoy chatting and joking on here too I have had a GLUT of commission requests come in the last couple of weeks and Ebay is selling super quick. I know thats not going to be entirely down to this blog, but I do feel it is related. Thanks again!
They look a bit overpronounced at the moment, but they kind of have to be so they don't get lost under the glow They will end up far more subtle and less eye burning, I promise!
Also, countdown has officially begun to moving day, finally going to have my own painting area properly set up with a photo both with real lighting and oh woooowww /swoon
