I can't decide if I should paint the undersides a lighter color or leave it camo?

Dave, if you go WW-II, sky or eggshell blue belly works for day flights, black for the night. Modern age, well, camo all over works too.

And no, killing stuff in the wastelands never gets truly old, especially wearing power armor and using good firepower, and killing deformed mutants and supermutants(Orks, they are so Orky!) shouting "FOR THE EMPRAH!" in my head as I kill them all.

I Think you're right, as a gunship meant for strafing the enemy into chunks, I don't see the need to camouflage it for sky on the belly. It's meant to be terrifying..for your last moments.

I think a consistent scheme all over is better than having the belly of the craft different. The color scheme is excellent, looking forward to what you with the canopy and the guns.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/04/30 13:38:15

Post by: dsteingass

Good! it is agreed then! The canopy frame will just be OD, but I need to paint some panels and bitz in flat yellow..just because I think flat yellow looks great against OD green. The guns, I'm not sure, I've seen miniguns on UH-1Cs in a grey that looks good, but not sure yet. I seemed to have misplaced the pilots and ammo belts, need to dig those up. I'm sure I put them somewhere with the intention of "not losing them" LOL

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/04/30 15:27:13

You didn't lose them, they are out on assignment whatever color you go with it needs Lots of smoke stains from the guns gentle usage .

Seems America painted a whitish underbelly for most aircraft back then

Automatically Appended Next Post:
However, Helicopters, which the Vulture and Valkyrie resemble more than normal fixed wing aircraft, were painted all green or camo all over so the Vulture getting a camo belly is on target Dave

Automatically Appended Next Post:
But the lightnings/Thunderbolts/Marauders would be most likely to have a pale underbelly

I did mention helicopters did not need the pale under belly. Ah, the weapons that need the boltgun metal base.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/04/30 20:39:42

Post by: dsteingass

Yeah, but is it a helicopter, gunship, or plane?

My last remaining pot of Boltgun metal is too rare, this is leadbelcher over black followed by Didi's magic black ink.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/04/30 22:17:39

Post by: lone dirty dog

I would class it as a helicopter for the reason being it looks more like a quick drop in craft rather than a jet so to speak, thats why I think the camo pattern all over as it would be dropping in on jungle growth all the time.

That model always make me think of a Harrier.

I'm sure you can manage nose-art Dave. Go down a graffiti style if you don't want to do mural style, you've shown you can do that...

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/01 19:00:03

Post by: dsteingass

Yeah, I thought about that, but then I'd really only get one shot, otherwise it would screw up the camo pattern below. I also bought some of those clear color laser decals that I haven't used yet, the thing wit that is, I have to fill an entire 8.5" x11" sheet otherwise it's wasted.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/01 19:10:40

Post by: Dr H

Yeah, that is the challenge with freehand nose-art, it's very easy to make a mess of the paint-job.
You could use a plain background for the art (like a badge) then any mistakes can be covered without affecting the paint-job.
Or gloss varnish on before the freehand as that can make it easier to remove mistakes without needing to repaint the background.

Transfers would also work. That's quite a size to fill though. Maybe fill it with many nose-art designs and then see what looks best on this and save the rest for future use.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/01 19:45:19

You could cheat and use premade ones. Pinupsplus.com has full size sheets of decals in varying sizes. Saw them in other threads, also seen them on ebay.

I was thinking the same thing, but now I get to call you the heretic . I guess recessed rivets on decal paper might look good and be more aerodynamic to boot.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/01 21:11:35

Post by: Viktor von Domm

now that is good thinking! recessed rivets on decals... winning ticket for sure!

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/01 21:23:38

Post by: Dr H

Speaking of recessed rivets I saw a tutorial about sculpting armour plating that mentioned that an empty mechanical pencil is good for making them in putty, as would any thin tube that you can push into the putty to make a ring.
Don't know if any of you riveteers have tried it, but thought it would interest you.

This is the tutorial in question

I've never had migraines, but I've had some doozy headaches in my day, even after I stopped drinking. Now I just drink water everyday. Usually 2-4 liters a day, really helped get rid of he aches and pains. Used to take ibuprofen every 4hours. Now I don't take it but once every few months, an usually only after I do something stupid.

Dave I should have a picture of the truck version of your half track next week, I might be able to swing by it before the . Seems there's a gun store between my house and my twins gymnastics center. It might be the m3. Didn't know if you'd like some shots to help spur you back on that project. The gunshop drives it around town in parades and just for free advertising.

Dave you should no better dry run the whole thing first its Forge World model after all just add some strips and a little paint you won't even notice

I have to say I was disappointed by this remark "Pilots..not too detailed, because you can't see them inside the canopy anyways" no excuse make the best of everything

As for the beading tool mentioned above I have had one for about 3 years now, saw someone using it to make rivets and buttons in GS.
Great tool but be careful with the pressure you apply when making the rivets on PC, to hard and you end up with a whole although it does expel a perfect rivet

Well, DC, Marvel, all of the publishers usually publish special free editions of most comics for the day, but local comic book shops also use the day to offload their older stock. It gets people into the stores, and is really good for small business.

Dave,

A couple notes of Valk cockpits:

1) You're missing the \_/ shaped pieces that goes between the two plastic cockpits.
2) The canopy pieces have the cross-beams moulded in. Thusly, you would have needed to build your own cross-bars for the side pieces. I seem to remember ranting about this awhile back, because it made painting the two canopies a total bitch.

Other than that, great progress, and great bag of OOP miniatures! Maybe if I'm nice to Theopony, they'll send me something. A pony? Perhaps.

No ponies here unless your needing knights on them. Ome Rohan, but mainly knights from the "battle masters" sets by Milton Bradley years go. A buddy and I split 6 boxes. Instant empire and chaos armies. The toy store had them on clearance.

Most of my guard tuff is gone now. But ask me and I'll check.

I'm sure we can work something out if your buddy wound up with any oop Escher or a mad Donna ulanti .

@JW This is compulsory anyways, but you're welcome!

@ Theo Base Colors so far, The fatigues will have urban camo markings of a yet undecided pattern and since you get their namesake..YOU decide what color their webbing and gear will be (because I suck at color selection)

@Jake Thanks man!

Pink . Just kidding, go dark grey or black if your doing urban camo. It might help blend into the field.

Wow, lots of production lately! I too am in a painty kind of mood - never seems to last long for me, so try to make the most of your own painting mood!
New troopers are looking ace, lots of pretty diversity in the skin tone. At the moment the colour scheme's really calling to mind for me an urban military police force, kind of like a SWAT team, though I definitely pick up the bug hunter vibe. I really like the old cadian minis, they had a lot of character. Looking forward to seeing where you go with them!

Thanks, only this one is done to test the camo pattern, which is just little squiggles of white really, I think camo patterns at this scale should always be simplified, otherwise it gets too busy.

I just use a tiny Atlas red sable brush, and a dab of Ceramite white thinned with a brushful of water and just make random forked squiggles, only a few minutes. I used the Sotar 20/20 airbrush for all the base colors of Intermediate Blue and black, I laid on the flesh basecoats with brush, and used Drakenhof Nightshade to shade the fatigues, followed by re-applying the int. blue on the high points of the fatigues, The black got Skavenblight dinge highlights, then do the boltgun metal and eyes last.

GW stated that the SM skins adapt to radiation levels and other occurrences of their environs. My Dragons Errant are also a mixed bunch as they are space-ship based Salamander DIY chapter, so they are not exposed to the same environs of the Salamander home world.

Now that made me LOL for real.. IMHO I would say It's also lacking in cover for the massed ranks of IG. There does seem to be some sort of fortified encampment going on in the background though, might take a few movement phases to reach it...

Haha yes it was funny! So Theo and his damn Chinese food pics made me want Chinese, so we went out, and passed a random Car Show along the way.

Of particular interest were a couple of '53s

This is the 53 Chevy Bel-Air Hardtop, I built a model of this car, same color and everything when I was a kid!
The pics don't so it justice, just to stand by it was a rush!

And this is a 53 Cadillac Convertible

Nice Bel-Air! Though, I like the mid-30s coupe sitting next to the yellow 53. Though I can't place the make on it. Most of the American mid-30s cars look roughly like that and I'm no expert.

Those are all 30s Fords, not sure of the years though, only slight differences
The Yellow one is actually the Delivery Van version, very rare nowadays.

I don't like Corvettes OR the dbags who own/drive them

i wasn“t referring to them being mean per se... just statistically here in germany shepherds are the cause for the most bites... of course this can be get controled in a way by the pets owner, but shepherds as a general breed are due to breeding a bit "mad!... same goes for other breeds like the often so adored Dalmatian... the inbreeding of these races lets something loose in the individual animal... it is a sad thing... i too think that dogs are men“s best friends... but all that racial stuff tends to get the whole thing weird...

Oh yeah, pure-breeding is dumb IMHO, causes all sorts of problems, including health problems. That's why Mutts are always da best! Here in the US, Pitt Bulls and Rottweilers get the bite stats, but it's always the people's faults, most of them are big, playful babies! Our house and yard are small, so a full-sized dog is really out of the question for us, a big dog deserves plenty of room to run.

that“s the reason we currently have no pets at all... we live in a three room apartment with four people... it“s cramped already...and a dog or a cat would make matters worse...not even thinking about what this would do to the dog... but in berlin you sometimes can“t even walk for poo... landmines i call them...

and yep...pure breeding... that is some poor invention... kings and queens have shown us already that this leads to a dumb heir... but will mankind learn? naww....never change a ru(i)nning system...

Try the 'lick lick' technique on her Dave, pop some butter on the palm of your hand and when she barks say lick lck and offer your hand to her, she'll stop barking and concentrate on you, then as you progress she'll respond to the word wherever you are.

and yes i imagine myself as a bit of a dog wrangler :-)

Two hand claps have been working, except when the little neighor girl is outside playing using her high-pitched voice, or the neighbor's Doberman is out

Yeah, my family used to do the Doberman Pinscher breeding, worst case as they were black/tan we had one fawn and one blue, they had health issues, some of the regular dboey's were perma-puppies, imagine what looks a 110lb dog about to attack, then his paws go on your shoulders and he licks you face instead of biting it, tail stub wagging

I dislik yappy dogs. One of our order neighbors had a beagle similar to our dearly departed dog, but theirs never shut up. Our dog never barked unless you were teasing it, but she was very protective of the kids.

Well, we had a nice long ride, but it seems your rain has now reached us Which is good, because we are both feeling how out of shape we are now, and I don't have to water the garden tonight

use a watering can for the whole garden to water it... and at the end of next week you both are back in shape

Haha, NO. I tilled up that patch of ground where it is for a reason..It's close to the outside hose spigot

The bikes will make us fit once again! We probably rode 3-5 miles today, it's a good start

I love where we moved to, everything is nearby. In walking distance: two car parts places, a dollar store, home improvement store, toy store, train store, churches, and my favorite....dairy queen. That last one isn't a healthy place to go to, since it just has the ice cream. I usually walk the other direction down to and round the walk path in the cemetary. I figure if I die I'll be in a good spot. Plus it's kind of neat seeing headstones from the 1800s.

Everything we need is close too, but it's not biking/walking friendly, some really busy roads cut through, and on this side of town, people are generally asswhole drivers, always in a hurry to get their starbucks or other trendy crap.

Luckily our streets have the crosswalk buttons at each intersection. Worst part of. Family walk is the arguing over who gets to push the button a the coner.

Oh you guys are making me a little sad! ever since i was a little boy I have desperately wanted a Doberman! I mean really really badly to the point of near obsession! I just love everything about them, their nature and temperament, size, intelligence and loyalty, best dogs ever in my book! and what do I end up with? a black LabX and two pure white balls of gentle fluff Samoyeds lol! but when i am sadly in the position when I am able to purchase my next best friend it will be a Dobe without a doubt although no dog could ever come close to the loyalty and companionship Oscar gives me, he may be a cross but he's simply beautiful :-) if only humans were as nice! if you want an example try putting your dog and your wife both in the boot of the car for 2 hours and see which one's happy to see you when you let them out? :-)

Thanks Cam! Perhaps on a future one I'll try different colored stripes, really the pattern is too small at this scale, but it's worth a try

had to relook those tartan trousers... quite good looking... but as I have a view of these myself...I never came around painting up these for all the beefiness of them... anyone seen any good conversions done with them? something I could do to cover up those nipples and so on?

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/12 12:50:16

They are big enough to do any sort of conversions I'd think. You could add chains and other piercings easily enough, headswaps would be difficult though, other than Ork Heads. Tattoos is another idea.

Dave's new Hobby Adventure thread | More buildings for the Building God! @ 2013/05/12 12:52:21

er...defiantly no piercings... in fact clothing them would be a way of thinking I am in favour of

Could just thicken the leather strap to cover the nipples, make it is some kind of emblem or design even.

I have converted one of these some where I will see if I can take a picture of it if you want ? but it still has nipples sorry Vik
