Damn this wretched place. Damn the orkish hoards. Damn it all. We came here a full 2 months ago to the distress call from the High Lord Militant of the sector. By the time we got here the planet wall all but taken. All sorts of races have been drawn here by the fighting. Even those bastard marines of chaos have made their way here. Upon arrival into the system we were immediately engaged by a fleet of orks sitting just outside our jump point. We lost half a company in the battle. Bless their souls and may the Emperor watch over them. When we were finally in orbit we began our decent straight into the heart of the conflict around Hive Hesperus. The orks were making a quick advance on the hive defenses, which proved less than satisfactory for the job. One of our thunderhawks went down after dropping its cargo, crushing a rhino and it’s payload in the process. Too many brothers died merely getting to the planet. The green skins would pay dearly. The attack was swift and brutal. We had them caught off guard and unbalanced them. The ensuing slaughter was our payback for all of our fallen brothers. By the end of the battle, the drop site was pooling with ork blood. I still can’t get over that they bleed red. After the attack we regrouped and began preparing for the next assault. The local PDF and Imperial guard regiments made contact at once to find out how they could help. Their hope rekindled upon our arrival. From a series of victories came a series of hard fought defeats as the orks numbers proved overwhelming in some sectors. We tried to redeploy to the areas but they were already over run. Pushed back into the hive we knew the only choice we had was to wait. The urban battle soon thereafter was intense. Buildings became fortresses, and in each dozens threw down their lives. We lost many brothers during the fighting, though each took his toll on the advancing hoard. Suddenly the orks halted their advance and dug in. It had become a figurative trench war. The street was a no mans land in a matter of hours. We took to the sewers and began making lightning raids from behind their lines, crashing in from below them only to dive back down a few minutes later. Many took our lead and began springing surprise attacks on the ork supply lines, which turned out to be more reinforcements for their line. It was working though, as the orks began to succumb and their numbers dwindled. At this weakness we launched a final repulsive attack, pushing them back past the hive walls. After the push came the storms. The orks withdrew their forces to hiding northwest of the hive. We took shelter within the hive and began rebuilding and planning our defense. Now we wait. Damn the waiting. It makes me uneasy and restless. But with our losses we have no other choice. When the storms reside and die away, we will be ready for them. By my honor as one of the Emperors chosen warriors we will give them hell and take their lives for those they have extinguished here. It’s only a matter of time. -Brother Marine Mathius 3rd Armageddon War

So the revamp/rebuild begins! It started with a simple change in the color scheme on a random model I decided to paint one day. And continues through the re-trim/re-detailing of some models. And will continue through to new tactical squads and a freshly painted army. And the best part, I plan on finishing them. You all get to watch me go from a few models to an army of them. The size of the army is still undetermined. I know I want two full tactical squads. It's always been the staple of my play style and they are the core of a marine army's strength. I'm thinking of going for 750 right now. Possibly bumping that up to 1000+ as I see where I'm at further on down the road. I'm not shooting for a lot here. I just want a playable and well painted, most of all, finished army. The color scheme is worked out. An army list should be on the way soon. For now, some teaser pictures:

So, I'm finally getting a solid 1k army list worked out over in the Army Lists section. And I decided it was time to go scrounging through my extra stuff/boxes and see what I could find. Well it was well worth the scrounge... >.> 2 Rhinos 1 Dread and a good grip of marines. The dread isn't on the army list but I'll definitely be giving him a paint up further down the road. I was just happy to have a dread that didn't weigh my case down by 5 pounds >.>.... Looks strong and has some really formidable firepower in there. I've also gone through and picked out all the pieces from the big pile o' marines I have in that picture that I'll be able to use. And here's what we're looking at: On Hand: Stuff that needs to be built and painted Emperors Champion - Possibly able to convert into my commander 7 Bolter Marines 1 Plasmagun Marine Ready to rock: Stuff that is in near tabletop ready condition Powerfist Marine - for the vet squad 1 Bolter Marine - For a tactical squad 1 Lascannon Marine - For tactical squad 1 Predator Annihilator - for Annihilating Need: Stuff I need...duh. 2 Veterans with CCW & BP 1 Veteran Sergeant with Power Weapon 1 Veteran with Power weapon 1 Plasmacannon Marine 1 Plasmagun Marine 3 Razorbacks - I have two Rhinos, neither of which are even completely modeled. I am going to see if i can snag the razorback turret bits to try and save money. Vindicator - this will probably be the last thing I snag, as well..it's not out yet >.>... I'm actually a lot close to having all the pieces than I originally thought I was. I'm only 10 models short of having the entire army in hand. And if you count having those 2 rhinos, I'm really only 8 models short. unfortunately 2 of those are tank models x.x...so this really won't be as super cheap as I would have liked... I plan on re-detailing the current lascannon marine with the white trim and getting his grey more in line with the new marines. He'll be next on the chopping block. After him you'll probably see some WIP build shots of the marines I have on hand. Oh and if anyone has any Emp champ conversion pictures I'd really appreciate them ^_^; More soon.

Just a progress report. I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about getting the razorback turrets for my two unbuilt rhinos right now, as well as the best way to get the vet models I want and a plasmacannon marine. Lots of logistics crap to do, but in the mean time I've got marines I can paint up.

That's because it is ^_-. I don't care about finishing my models quickly, or efficiently even. I want to put out a solid 100% my best every model I paint for this force. As for more thought, I'm trying to figure out which Veteran models I want to help fill out my vet squad. The current box set would give me some models, but would also leave me with models I won't use, or would be a huge pain in the 6 to convert (not that has stopped me >.& gt . Navarro - Thanks for the kind words ^_^. The palette has been the key to keeping them looking tight and cohesive. And the power sword was one of the key decisions in that palette decision as well. For a while the sword had a crappy blue ice look. When that wasn't working for me, which turned out to be the color choice not just the technique/style it was painted, I hit it with a deep dark red and was instantly happy.
Wehrkind - Please make with the Jim Beam kthx. >.>
Boss - The vet was a ton of work. And while I'm glad I spent the time getting him just right, it took me nearly two to three weeks from start to finish x.x. A long time when you're trying to paint an army. Then again, a normal marine took me a week to a week and a half >.>...This army isn't getting completed any time soon...Stupid EMT class...

Well as you've probably seen, I've been somewhat side tracked with the table I'm building, but in the meantime I've also been hammering away at an idea for my chapter badge. Here's how the brainstorming went : After that I started trying to solidify something. And eventually came out with this stuff: I'm not sold on anything just yet, and there are a lot of ideas still unexplored on the brainstorming side. I just wanted to see what some of you folks might think of what I've got on these two pages ^_^

Post by: Wehrkind
That's a good questions. I can't think of a particular icon, but I do have a few ideas of the general sort I would go for.
1) Nothing fancy. This doesn't strike me as a "Pride in Your Colors" sort of army, but rather a no nonsense, morbid sort. All sorts of gold or bright colors would be wierd.
2) Some more subtle, unnerving symbol of death. In other words, not a flaming battle axe with a skull in the middle with skulls for eyes, but more the gentle hand whose touch snuffs life's flame. Less Blood Angels, more "Your time is at hand; fight if you must, but the inevitable is upon you."
3) I don't remember 3. See 1 and 2.

Post by: dogma
I actually really like the skull over the inverted triangle, sort of a subtle reminder of which direction these guys intend to send their adversaries.
That said, I agree with Wherkind that the symbol should be understated, and probably very stylized. Possibly some form of stylized solar eclipse, just a black circle overlapping a white one, almost like a ven diagram. Also, since you're power sword technique has already pulled warmer reds into the pallet, you could try for some form of quietly burning candle icon. Possibly a red diamond overlaying a white triagnle.
4670
Post by: Wehrkind
I thought of a candle too last night, sort of reminiscent of a costume I did in college. The only thing that is stopping me on the candle is that at first glance it might imply something scholarly as opposed to macabre.
Possibly a snuffed/broken candle with a fine cord of smoke wafting up from the wick would do nicely... that could be really nice.

Post by: dogma
I dunno, as a person who's spent alot of time reading and writing scholarly articles I could definitely see a connection between that process and a grey death.

My grey method is rather simple for these guys. I start with a chaos black undercoat, paint codex grey over that, and do a highlight with fortress grey. That's it. I do use some washing technique on some of the larger flat spots to help add some extra depth to the color though. But you could get away with a light edging. I also do a VERY LIGHT drybrush of bleached bone over much of the model to just add that extra grime feel.

We actually have a local player here that has been playing "Grey Death" legion for years (He even has a custom T-shirt made with the name and symbols), but his army looks different. The idea of the legion is cool no matter how many people use the name. I think the Grey Death minis in this topic are the best painted that I have ever seen. Alas, no matter how original any of us are with our ideas.... someone somewhere has probably already done or will do something just like it. Even GW has stolen most of their ideas from other sources, but it is still cool in my book

There are a couple of Grey Death armies out there. It's not an original idea for any of us though ^_^. We all stole it from the same place. BattleTech! I was an avid Btech player back in the day before I found out about warhammer. Then one day I finally got some warhammer stuff and sat down to paint a marine. I wanted to play space wolves, but my friend didn't have the correct paints, so I picked out some colors that were sort of close that he had on hand and went to work coming up with my own scheme. And since they were all grey a friend chimed in "Grey Death Legion!!" And thus they were born.
And not to toot my own horn but yes, I believe I've got the best looking group out there ^_-. Thanks for the compliment!

The sniper looks very characterful already. I would've wanted to see entries like this in the dakka challenge. This figure really has an aura of the infantry in him. I think the beard looks like a beard now, and would require a little careful glazing with skin colours to shave back to a stubble. I like the look, just an observation.

Thanks a ton for the kind words man. My idea on the scouts is that they are already grizzled veterans from the 3rd Armageddon War. The scouts are freshly recruited from those that fought by the Grey Deaths side in the hives and ash wastes to replace the heavy losses from that campaign. I wanted to give the impression that these aren't some bright eyed fresh faced teens, but that they are men among men. That's one of the thoughts behind the unshaven face.
I'll try going for the stubble on a future piece with your suggestion.

I decided to roll with it and see where I went. And I'm happy to say I'm rather pleased with the results. I also went back with a dark wash to help shade the folds more. This was something I should have done before going in and camo'ing but it works just as well now.
Thoughts?

I really like it, it looks like modern camo. I've heard that the digital camo really breaks up the shape of a person and makes it harder to focus on them. Besides, shouldn't space marine scouts of 38,000 years in the future be using camo a little more advanced than blotches?

the scythe looks good, looks like it's easy to paint too
I'll let you know if I steal the top hat idea, I'll credit you as "Insignia by Grey_Death" Actually, it may work well for a vampire count army too.. hmm. new models coming soon... I need to win the lottery.......

Thanks man ^_^. And ease of painting was a big factor in the design of it.
As to ANY of the other ideas on this blog for insignia (past the one I selected of course!), anyone should feel free to use them ^_^. There are some good ones in there that I didn't think fit the army as well as the reaper/death symbol. I hope you guys enjoyed the watching the creative process that went into this!
Now, to go about finishing the model x.x...

Ok I know I know...I'm lazy and I haven't updated this bad boy in a long while. But I got a 360 and it's stolen all of my time.
But tonight I decided to put an idea together that I've had stirring in my head for a while now, even before I got the 360. A Gears of War inspired Close Combat Bolter. It's just a prototype, but it could be something I use in the future for the Grey Death Legion, or a one off squad some day down the road. I thought I would share the results so far with you all ^_^
Thoughts, comments, and suggestions are very much welcome ^_^.

I have played that game for months and stared at the cover art of the lancer. I have always thought it cool, but never in a 40k way. I am glad you posted this. Consider this idea stolen.

Looks pretty cool. How are you envisioning the marine holding it?

the marine's fingers are still gripping the bolter normally in the picture. i suppose there is a hand hole in the chainsaw body.

*headsmack* wow, I saw those fingers as more grip the first time. That's what I get for posting exclusively at 4am.

Yep, I carved out a hole in the saw body. It's not a very clean cut but it got the job done. It'll get cleaned up some in the final product.
I'm going to end up bringing the blade up into the bolter body some more, bringing the top edge of the saw housing in line with the bolter body to make it look more functional. Stay tuned.

Well, go boredom and painters block.
I've started another Veteran Marine. I still need to finish the scout sniper, but unfortunately I'm at a loss for what color the cloth bits need to be and without that little piece of info, it's sort of a pain to finish the model x.x. I'm trying to keep a limited palette with him. If anyone has any ideas, please, feel free to let me know!
So yeah, some base grey laid down on the new guy.
Oh and I decided it's time to strip an old captain model I put together. He suffers.

I may paint my old marines in a similar paintescheme, it looks realy good. I'm glad I decided not to throw them out!
But the whole colour scheme looks great, and your painting skills are better than mine by far. Can't wait to see more of them!

Where is the power source for the chainblade?

Chainblade?

The chainblade on the bolter.
You know, I was thinking about chain-based CCW attachments for bolters last night and seeing yours gave me some inspiration. I'm a little leary of having a hole for the hand in the chainblade mainly because if you've got a chainblade with teeth that big, there needs to be enough room in the body of the blade for the chain to go all the way around. Now, I know that realism in a game like this is kind of an oxymoron, but and it doesn't look like it has enough room right now. That being said, I like the placement of the blade. What about having a handle coming out the side of the body of the bolter perpendicular to the pistol grip. That way, the marine has a place to hold on and won't chop his fingers off. Also, removing the fingers gives room for motor gubbins for the blade.

The chain doesn't necessarily have to go all the way around, the chain could be one that goes back and forth with both edges of each 'tooth' sharpened. That means it could be compact but achieve much the same effect as a fully rotating chain.

So he's armed with a hedge trimmer?
Laughably weaksauce.

It's just a plausible theory, besides, it's only 'weaksauce' if you call it a hedgetrimmer. Otherwise it's still a miniature chainblade, it just saves space by operating slightly differently to the normal ones.

Death By Monkeys idea has a lot of potential for making the blade 'work' more properly I think.
The hedgetrimmer would work too, but wasn't really the intent when I started that prototype.

Went through an old notebook from way back when I was still in High School. This was when my life was absolutely dominated by 40k and wargaming in general. So many army lists...so many thoughts and ideas for the game...so much sketch work ^_^. So I share with you all the Chapter Master of the Grey Death Legion.

So, I know it's been forever since I last updated this project log...I'm sorry!! I have the worst modeling ADD on this forum I swear it!
But, yesterday I had work. And since I had already finished my Dakka Painting Challenge entry, I found myself lacking a current model to paint. So I got to digging into my case and found a piece I should have finished months ago.
Here are the results:

Nice! I like that model.
That said, why the grey helmet on the Veteran? Don't your Vets have distinctive white hats to go with the shoulders?

Spiffy. Love the mud weathering on his boots.

very impressive models, i do find quite a few things funny, i started an army a few years ago (emporers tears) both of our armies have the same colour schemes.
we both used the emporers champion as a convertion, we both use the old V seargent with a P fist.
just in interest, do you use the 2004 games day vet seargent aswell?
(i think it was 2004)

John - I have used a white helmet on another model. I just don't plan to make it for for all of my vets. I think it's going to be some sort of special battle honor from the Armageddon war or something ^_-; i haven't quite worked out all of the fluff.
DBM - thanks, folks really seem to like the weathering.
JD21290 - I don't have the Gamesday vet. I do love many of the gamesday models though. The sergeant with fist is actually a plastic model from the command squad sprue.

Sweet models, not like you need to be told again, but still, wow.
BTW solid sketching there, wish I could draw like that. Even my smiley faces look rubbish. Maybe that is why I play orks.

Keep this up Grey Death, I said in your WIP that I love your work and this company is my favorite, I also feel like I learn so much reading through your threads. And thanks for the Friday tips at the painting corps too.
I was wondering what technique to you use to create the dirty look on the boots, is it similar to the weathering you posted about using the sponge or is it another technique, It really adds to the models makes them look like they are fighting a battle rather than lining up for parade. I am going to start trying it but if you could give some hints it would be much appreciated.
thanks

Thanks for the continued interest in the GDL folks. As much as I love them, it's hard for me to get an army of them because of how much effort goes into each marine.
Some day I will get back to them, and with that a new direction for the army list will most likely coincide.
For now, if you're looking for army progress from me, check out my Sons of Medusa!
