wow... cool coincidence that the door fits so nice into that wall!...i saw you had a slight error with the brass aquilla... i instantly began with fainting and shallow breath ... but then after scolling down further i saw you made everything good again^^ so i could quit with gasping^^
I was asking a basic uestion in regards to Viks statement, he is a person of Berlin, Northern Germany, where, they are usually seen as the tough and tumble types, where the southern Germans are more of the softer views. Or so it was still in the day I was in southern Germany in the 1980's
Very intellectual conversations were had in our meet club even when we all went together for some weekend off dining experiences and beer.

well...you need to know that Prussians and bavarians have never been that friendly with each other... in fact we had wars even that connected each other^^

well we berliners are infamous for our bluntness and our less hospitable character ...
Well, Vik, I knew the different states in Germany were small fragments before the unification and knew of the Prussian hardness and the southern philosophers, and the odd mix of such a strong state that also had the social programs and such under Hindenburg,
I think that the need to categorize people into what they "should be" is the root of all modern problems- if I may wax philosophically myself. "if you aren't X, then you must be Y" is a logical fallacy that unfortunately, many people believe in. In the US, my entire generation (and the younger generations) are breaking away from those stereotypes, and finally becoming individuals, rather than trying to fit into some "collective" society that we never really were. People do their own thing and become their own people now, thankfully.
Our hobbies speak for that for each one of us, we do things with plastic, and metal, and resin that other people think is silly, but yet look at the collective community we have created here on Dakka, a collective that still celebrates the individual talents and craftsmanship above all else. We couldn't do it locally, it took the Internet to bring all of us from all our corners of the world to make it.
Automatically Appended Next Post: ..However, some still will look at that and say "oh, he's a miniature geek" well yes, but that is not ALL I am either. We're getting ready to head out the door on a 4 hour roadtrip to the Nelsonville Music Festival, where the people-wAtching will be as entertaining as the music is
I for one prefer to be one of the square pegs in a round hole. I understand everyone wants to fit in, or belong, but then stare at people like our waitress last night. She was a very attractive lady once you got past the facial piercing and all the tattoos. Seriously both arms had full sleeves as well as both legs being completely covered. Also her back was covered, a least the three quarters of it that was showing. No we didn't go to. Strip club, but a fancier Mexican restaurant near our home. You see even wanting to be different, I still find that I make judgement calls, but I'm working on it. She was an excellent waitress, even helped us get out the door quick when she heard our kids were freaking out last night because of the tornado.
Although I would suggest to you that the root of most things is genetics and education. Even that isn't exactly correct but I won't add anything else myself because a) once I get going I won't stop and b) someone always gets offended.
Well, as Dave said, we are all unique individuals, non conformists, the people at the music festival will be dressed in whatever they like, and that can range from bland to "Wow! amazing!" all the way to "What were they thinking?" and they will all speak and act in interestingways.
Conformacist societies always seem a bit bland wanting all to be the same in all things
oh yeah... I can do without conformist peeps...in-laws are the essence of that spirit... my father in law even coined the phrase: he who does not work has no need to eat...would you want someone like that around your kids???
@Vik, my father in-law is accepting of me being a stay at home dad, even though before we got married he layed down the law about me being the bread winner and supporting the family. Just friday i heard on the radio that here in the states 40% of households the women are the primary bread winners now as oppossed to ten years ago when only 12% were. Unemployement figures heavily into this, as does single mom families, but we are seeing a big chage in society now. I wasnt expecting my father-in-law to be understanding, he is working n wife number 6 or 7, we've lost track, and its always him deciding the other one isnt pulling their weight.
Oh and always remeber the numbers from unemployment is only the poor souls lucky enough to get the unemployment checks, they never count the folks too proud to go for it, and the folks who have run out, when the ones who run out before finding a job but still are not working, they merely add the numbers to the lessened unemployment figures, so I say take the unemployment numbers , triple them and there is reality, of course the truth would hurt more, and it is not the governments' fault, but the businesses for not hiring folks except those who are job hopping and working already.

never trust a statistic that you haven´t forged by yourself...
Automatically Appended Next Post: the same game is running with unemployed statistics here in germany too... we have lots of educational programs for unemployed... it is a market all by itself now... but those that attend these are not among the unemployed numbers as they are then doing something else...
well, once you get lopped off the unemployment check rolls, they consider you no longer adding to the issues, and they can make happy noises of improvements, yet look at all the folks in need as opposed to having. How many else have to settle for "Under employment" ie partial jobs, not even a proper part tiem job, but say under 20hrs a week?
well here we have a problem... you work for over 40 hrs a week in a job... or for two together and it still doesn´t pay you enough to pay your bills... so they need to get extra payment from the government... does this sound right to you? not for me... working you bum off and still needing to beg for money from the beancounters... that is most hurtful...
Viktor von Domm wrote: well here we have a problem... you work for over 40 hrs a week in a job... or for two together and it still doesn´t pay you enough to pay your bills... so they need to get extra payment from the government... does this sound right to you? not for me... working you bum off and still needing to beg for money from the beancounters... that is most hurtful...
Yep, now take that and add a dash of 40k to it, and you get Brazil by terry gilliam
Same here in the UK manipulation is the game, education programs, training schemes anything to alter the outcome of unemployment, this does not include longterm sick either.
So tripling the figure would be nearer the truth but I bet it still comes up short, it amazes me that governments think we are that naive to believe these statistics
Unfortunately LDD, most people don't know/care, until they are one of the unwashed masses(no offense meant here as I am one of those unemployed now). What gets me is more women are going to work, and getting paid less then men, then the bosses get rid of the men and hire more females. If you don't see it, you've missed the whole equal pay argument women have been making for years. Businesses say they are doing a good thing by hiring women, which isn't wrong, but if they do it unfairly just to fulfill quotas then this helps perpetuate the cycle.
The other thing about jobseekers allowance in the UK is there are two ways to be eligible. Either have been paying national insurance for 2 years prior to unemployment or have less than a certain amount of savings in the bank.
As my last employment was only 18 months and I was careful enough to save money... I get nothing.
If I'd blown all my money, I'd be given more free money, how does that make sense...
As we were driving home today, we took a scenic route that diagonally cut through Ohio, and I marveled at the disparity between rich areas and destitute areas of a State that was once fully employed and very productive. Do you know who invented the system of Haves and Have-Nots???....The Haves did! And they'll keep it that way any chance they get!
Yeah, I see the despairity changing even around me. Some of the neighborhoods here were affluent, but are now really taking a beating. My wife's grandparents subdivision has older homes but have always been upperclass, $500k+ easily. Going over there to help out I've seen lots of those homes in serious disrepair, and yards look terrible. It's mainly older people there, it might just be the age of the people, but I think it's more financial than actual wearing down. Most of the families had previously hired lawn are people, but even that is disappearing now.
Many of them like poppy (wife's grandpa), sold their mowers when they had the money to hire someone to do the work. Now hey don't have the money or the mower to get the job done, only some of them have kids or grand kids that will drag their gear over every week to help out.

There's not a lot of those in the subdivision as the home prices are so high and the homes are built for large families. Also due to age and cost of the homes younger people tend to just buy new homes which don't need the repairs and updates these will need.
Ok, so I got sidetracked by this dollar store "Army guy" set I picked up cheap..The "army guys" are the kind you play with outdoors and are so bad they aren't worth camera time.
It has some interesting ammo crate bits, etc. but the Jeep struck me particularly Those little green things are new Lenovo laptop packing protectors of which I shall soon have MANY of What Catachan army wouldn't need a GI Joe V.A.M.P.??? I need to find appropriate wheels first though, so stay tuned
That's a great idea Dave. I always loved the joe jeep, and the cobra one with the missile launcher. The only thing better would be the motorcycle with assault cannon.
Oh, I plan on getting a second set I saw, one with a missile launcher trailer..It's BEGGING to be made into this dynamic duo!
But yeah, a STINGER could also look badass, especially with the gull-wing doors and armored roof added A COBRA Trooper gets assigned "rear launcher" as crew position when he's been bad
Nope, never read any of the imperial guard novels. Kept myself to the Horus hersey, iron warriors, and night lords series. But even they must like hot chocolate .
Like it was meant to be Dave! looks almost as if it should have just been a smaller version! you're doing an excellent job so far as if that's a suprise!
Amazing how the dollar store cheap toy was a good size for the conversion, and yes it did look like they downscaled the G.I Joe one for their "Army guy" set, the cannon would also work as well.
That's looking pretty solid already, Dave. I really need to stop doubting your projects when I see the raw materials - I'd get blown away much less often
One thing is for sure, however I do it, it is gonna wait until tomorrow The winch will be fun to do, I am thinking of wrapping a braided wire around a spool of some sort

Thanks, well, I'm not giving the hood the curved/pointed bodywork, but the fenders were a bit too low, so I figured the thickness of plasticard would give some paint contrast there anyways
Dave I have some of the ravenwing lamps if you want them for headlights/rooftop lamps, just let me know.
I had made a winch using bits from the rhino sprue and a a tube, wrap some wire and viola.
Unfortunately my original got busted during the move so this is just tacked on with poster glue.
Put a couple of lamps a top to show what I was thinking for the jeep.
Thanks man! I'd LOVE to have those bitz! Save them for a future trade deal if you aren't gonna be needing them
I've got the headlamp mounts figured out, It's the rest of the front end that has been taking so much time....
This is the last picture before I take the belt sander to the hood to try and give the hood sides a slope downwards towards the headlights. I'll mount more lights on the bumper bar wen I start building the bumper/winch rig (on the bottom half (screws still hold the top and bottom halves together remember )
Dave your making stopping at the dollar store hard to resist. That is looking sweet. Especially since I have some reference vehicles in my garage I saw the other day.
And
Don't know where all the parts to them are, probably lost to the void. I also have a snow vehicle in the basement somewhere. It's not the snowcat, ill have to find it later for pics.
Will you guys cut it out? please! (no don't really) I am just longing to re collect all the old and most awesome toys I used to have, especially the G.I Joes and C.O.R.P.S figures! want, want, want, want!
Oh wow Theo. I have that lorry as an Action Force vehicle as well. That's definitely in the loft as I've seen it recently. Has a green and black camo' top instead though. Oh, the memories.
OMG! Get into those Joe/Action Man/Regional Equivalent and post pics!!
Everybody!
Meanwhile..after a date with the belt sander, more putty, and some file-work, we have this
The slope is severely toned down, but the basic shaping is there..If I were to do it again..I'd plan the hood a different way than I did it ;
.>And BECAUSE It's staying faithful to the original, I fear it's too good for even Catachans eh?
dave... you have some serious guts... using a belt sander on that lil piece of glory... you certainly try hard to gain anew my respect...*bows*... i like the jeep as is... but what we really need to see now is...a sitting catachan driver to see if the seats fit the bill... i have learned a hard lesson that often this particular detail is as crucial as can be...
and at theo... that lorry is simply awesome...and very inspiring! and mates... woudl you believe that i had almost no war related toys back in my days? my mother tried to raise me as a pacifist...fat chance^^
I have some friends whose children are not allowed guns or soldiers. As soon as they get chance they are all over my kids toy guns. What's funnier is that they eat their breakfast toast and make guns with the crusts, drives their Mum nuts.
It is human nature. Give a boy a stick, he instantly makes a spear or a bow.
As to the jeep, sweet Dave, sweet. Got to agree with Vik though, need to make sure scaling is good for driver.
catachan.... even tho a cobra one would be cooler... but sometimes you have to step away from rule one a bit
and cam...
absolutly... i had my stick guns long before i could get my first plastic water pistol^^... and i even made guns from legos^^... my mother couldn´t win that war ever^^
lol... the breadcrust guns... i know for a fact that this drives me wild with my own kids... not because of violence or food mistreated.... no it is the breadcrumbs.... who do you think has to clean up after such a gunfight? ....the kids? ha!... nope... me...and ol dusty hoover^^
you really should apreaciate the fact that you lot never lost a war and got treated as if war is not a game for kids... here in western germany (berlin) many peeps looked at war related toys with much more than just a frown...
god... i am so envious about you lot!...
as for closeups.... those bigger guns in green and the red thingy just at the right of these?
Sadly some of these things have seen better days and quite a few of them were before I had use of them as most of this was hand-me-downs from my older brothers.
I even found the bomb that fits under the helicopter as well.
and a second side-car for the bike...
Also seen better days as the red gun is missing one gun barrel and the controllers panel.
I threw away loads of my action man stuff at the start of the year. I should have sent it to you guys or something. Hopefully some little kid is having a ball with attack helicopters, cars and bike and stuff.
seeing those guns.... i think i have been a gun nerd all of my times... i still fondly remeber my guns from the only Star wars action figures i had... the ATAT drivers... they had a different kind of blaster then the standard troopers...
Zartan! That's who he is. I've been looking at him and wondering where he fits in. No, it's his skin that did, as he was a master of disguise. Went with his face-mask and being able to take the front off his armour.

I was sure the green plastic on the Skiff changed colour, Yes his skin changed a blue grey in sun light and he had a back pack that held the mask in it.
I miss my old toys dam why did I sell them why ………………….
Zartan belonged to the dreadnought's if I remember correctly
Oh yeah, Wikipedia says the skiff is supposed to be thermal reactive. But either mine isn't, isn't anymore or my hot little hands aren't hot enough...
I've chucked it on the window sill (as the sun's out) and will see if that does anything.

LOL @ the Movie butt-rock theme!! My heart is most fond of the original Sunbow cartoons. Before the drought of 86-89 when DiC took over
The ONLY thing stopping me is a suitable, available COBRA trooper helmet! If I were crewing it with Vipers, there are plenty of Viper-like helmets out there in 28mm. The facemask is easy to do on any face with LGS, but the helmet is unique, larger than a German Helmet, while resembling one.
I know they are not perfect, but the madrobotminiatures.com sadoukadi heads look pretty good for cobra troopers to me. But I still vote A. If I were a gijoe, I would bare knuckles brawl sgt slaughter to be able to interrogate that cobra trooper

Go catchans Dave, you can put the drivers name, passenger name and gunners names on the sides like pilots have on their planes, and use their nicknames "torch, ripper, and slash" and cold slither can just be their favorite band of the 41st millennium.
Action Force GiJoe had not made it across the sea at that stage, although my dad being in the RAF used to get postings to German and pic up the Gi Joe at the PX on the American base
You could always go back to the dollar store and pic up another jeep and do both Cobra and Catachan versions
Hows the job front going Dave ? anything looking hopeful fingers stilled crossed here for you mate

I'm blacklisted from them because They sent me the wrong parts once, and They sent bits to big for a regular envelope in a regular envelope. I even sent them photos of the ripped envelope that had been delivered empty to my house. They won't even respond to my emails. I even gave them positive responses on the first mistake when they sent replacements and told me to keep the wrong bits.
I won't use hem anymore and will continue to post this each time their name pops up.

GS time for the cobra helmets
I'm stateside too shaso, one came in a plastic baseball card box, it was cracked, but had all the wrong bits in it. The other was just a plain white office envelope, not even padded. But it was perforated by all the machines the post office uses, and no way one of hose cases could have been in it, or squeezed out.
If I remember correctly it took about a week to get a response to my first email.
This was 2+ years ago. I just tried to order some bits off ebay from them, but I am still blocked with no way to get into contact with them. It was back when I was sourcing my shoulder pads for my marine chapter. I spent the money with someone else instead. But their prices are good, and I would give them another chance if allowed. Everyone gives them glowing reviews, but I wasn't even able to ding them on ebay because they blocked me before I could write my review.
for cobra helmet I would grab some German WW2 28mm helmets (wargames factory bits) then file down the front of the helmet and carve it a bit to make the 'V' shape, then add a scarf/lower facemask from greenstuff. I think the Cobra helmet is basically like a german helmet shape, just cobra shape is a bit straighter and with less of a lip, you just have to file down the lip a bit.
dang, I guess your only alternative is to heavily file/greenstuff using the WF one as a base and then mold it somehow. I very much doubt theres a helmet out there exactly in a cobra shape! Then again a good paintjob does wonders.
these are skeleton helmets... with a bit of filing these could do i think...
also... as selvegio said... why not make a special force of cobra warriors for your jungle fighters? i think that would be a cool project... and.... from an artictic point of view... you would need to tackle some other kind of colors....

I've been itching to check out this missile launcher trailer
Each missile is molded onto it's rack unfortunately, but removing them by a screw will allow any imaginable type of dual or quad weapon to be mounted there with independent right and left articulation, as well as 360 degree swivel held by another screw below.
Infinitely useful is the provided cockpit, which my headless Stinger Driver (sentinel pilot) fits perfectly
..And now the LAV-type vehicle
Shas, do you see potential in this?
I see some wheels and a turret I'll be stealing for other projects
I was wondering if you saw the lav. I'm still thinking of getting some of these, but just couldn't pull the trigger the other day. Maybe I'll buy the jeeps and use them for n adeptus arbites vehicle. Just need the proper bits to go with it.
Dave you are father to a furry little child. It's good training, especially when your picking up the poop.
Love the coffee mug. You should put a strip across the side of it to be a level gauge. Thn you can have fun playing Lego after every sip you can lower the gauge and raise it back when you fill it.
Oooh, that LAV is just calling out for an Arbites makeover. I need to get down the local Poundstretcher and see if we have anything similar for sale this side of the pond...
Yes Dave, I see all sorts of re-work that can be done to that chassis, I could add a tread system, a new turrets style(I drew plans for a scout tank using an off center weapon) and it would be a big ride, but looks quite comfy especially for Ogryns.

They were $8.00 a set here in Missouri. But on the web page they had a coupon for $5.00 off a $30.00 purchase. I wish I had used it, now I'm thinking one of the lavs for an arbites command vehicle, and three of the jeeps to use as rhino carriers.
Yeah, the sets are $8 normal price. I really got that set for the missile launcher. Oh and the 1/72 scale F-16 is actually better than most Revell model kits, it has engraved panel lines! It also has cool working landing gear, but when they are down, the jet is back heavy, making the nose point up as if taking off. AND the scale is off like already mentioned. If I were a kid, these jets would immediately go into my "outdoors for playing in the dirt" bucket, because they seem really indestructible.
Shas, if you want it, you can have the whole LAV. You'll have to break the glue bonds on the axle/wheels though to get to the screws, and the wheels need a serious date with a belt-sander as they have a nasty mold-line.

that sounds like hell for toys if I remember right from back in the days ...
when i was a lil kid I used to hammer matchbox cars so hard against our balcony walls to have cars that look actually like car accidents... back then you couldn´t just buy cars all vintage looking you had to do it yourself
er....now I have somehow a weird image in my mind of you taken a dumb in your kitchen... yeah... I probably should take my mind out of the gutter already
also... an all yellow kitchen can be a bit hurtful to the unprotected eye... especially at the early morning breakfast just before work/school

Sounds like a challenge! do you need me to PM the address again? or do you still have it from that supply drop you landed on me?
LOL Kids should refer to him as "Mr. 80s Space Guy" There is a lot of big-name voice talent there, including Morgan Freeman playing a "God-ish" character
.... i hope they get the dubbed version right... i am so gonna wrap up my whole family and will watch this...my kids will LOOOOOOOVE this...(me too of course...)
great find LDD!
as for the 80´s space guy... we still have quite a bunch of these...^^...
I love how 80s space guy looks like his helmet was chewed by the dog Well, fellas. We're leaving for a road trip to New York this afternoon. Hold the fort while i'm gone.
Well, we're outside of Pittsburgh, PA tonight, we plan on driving tomorrow to Westchester county, then taking the train into NYC, then driving to Albany. I've never been to the city before, so plenty of pics to come
Really nice New Yorkers will stop and help with directions
Polite New Yorkers will not bump into you
Uncaring New Yorkers will bump into you
Rude New Yorkers will curse at you after they bump into you
It's completely insane here though, the Times Square toys are us is fantastic!
There is a 3 storey Ferris wheel inside the fething store. Also they were better stocked with Lego product than the Lego stores
Automatically Appended Next Post: Tomorrow, I get to check out Grand Central and the Empire State building, and I'm told I must experience a dirt water hot dog too...
New York can add inches to the waist line if not careful Dave. The delis used to stay open even at night and had buffet style dining, so hehe, food is amazing
He means 'dirty water' hot dog. All of the street hot dog vendors just use tapwater for their hot dog boilers. However, it is the taste of NYC tapwater that helps give the hot dogs (and the pizza) the unique NYC taste. And I don't mean that in a bad way what so ever.
do the US have generally speaking problems with their tab water? here it is quite pleasant... so if someone doesn´t use bottled water for cooking no one would even mention it...it is just the usual way to cook....
No, but water quality (and therefore contaminants and therefore flavor) varies immensely. So cooking in NYC water is a different flavor than cooking in, say, Washington State water.
ok... we have that too... in certain areas you get quite differently flavoured water...
I know that it is no wise decision to drink water from the tab in certain countries in the world... in the movies we see so often those big water gallons... I thought this must have something to do with the water quality in America...but good to know it isn´t that bad at all...!
But NY food is awesome, and if one is not careful, one can get rather over sized fast. But McDonald's in Manhattan will be over priced due to the way they have to ship all the stuff in, so last I was there, a 1/4 pounder was a buck more than on Long Island per se.
If you're checking out art museums Dave, I would recommend the Cloisters... that's where the MET keeps their cool medieval art (they got some real classics) and also those monks made amazing miniature shrines!
For a country boy like me, it was a surreal experience. The sheer size of Manhattan was the most surprising part.
We've been in Albany the past couple days, Just now I got to go to this great game shop here called Zombie Planet.
I scored one of these Dust Tactics modular building sets, I've never seen THAT much Dust stuff in one shop ever.
I also scored a handful of the army painter flowers and various groundcovers for Bag End.
When you get home and bust that building open ill be watching, the flgs near me has the whol line of dust stuff nd I just looked at that on Friday. The guy there didn't really know how it would look with 40k/ necromunda build alongside it.
Nice find I have looked at that kit on line before, look forward to the grand opening so to speak, be interesting to see your feedback on it compared to the 1/35 scale building kits.
Well Dave, I've just spent 3 full days in work going through your mothballed thread again, and this one (In Dakka's blog view too, so I only got the posts with pretty pictures, and it still took me that long! )
I just wanted to say thanks for sharing so much of your awesome projects with us all
You have been my chief inspiration when it comes to building terrain (heavily riveted, of course ) It was your Necromunda buildings on the first few pages of your previous thread that inspired me to get some decent terrain making materials and get building! Of course, the subsequent stuff and OT madness has been just as inspirational
I don't take many photos of my stuff, but tonight, I'm going to take loads of pictures and put it all on Dakka
So thank you Dave, and the rest of the =|_,= for a 3 day distraction from work, and for inspiring me to do more terrain stuff, and document it on Dakka!
