I was asking a basic uestion in regards to Viks statement, he is a person of Berlin, Northern Germany, where, they are usually seen as the tough and tumble types, where the southern Germans are more of the softer views. Or so it was still in the day I was in southern Germany in the 1980's
Very intellectual conversations were had in our meet club even when we all went together for some weekend off dining experiences and beer.

well...you need to know that Prussians and bavarians have never been that friendly with each other... in fact we had wars even that connected each other^^

Well, Vik, I knew the different states in Germany were small fragments before the unification and knew of the Prussian hardness and the southern philosophers, and the odd mix of such a strong state that also had the social programs and such under Hindenburg,

well... to sum it all up... we make quite decent beer...but we are a bunch of loonies...like basically everybody else

I think that the need to categorize people into what they "should be" is the root of all modern problems- if I may wax philosophically myself. "if you aren't X, then you must be Y" is a logical fallacy that unfortunately, many people believe in. In the US, my entire generation (and the younger generations) are breaking away from those stereotypes, and finally becoming individuals, rather than trying to fit into some "collective" society that we never really were. People do their own thing and become their own people now, thankfully.

Our hobbies speak for that for each one of us, we do things with plastic, and metal, and resin that other people think is silly, but yet look at the collective community we have created here on Dakka, a collective that still celebrates the individual talents and craftsmanship above all else. We couldn't do it locally, it took the Internet to bring all of us from all our corners of the world to make it.

I for one prefer to be one of the square pegs in a round hole. I understand everyone wants to fit in, or belong, but then stare at people like our waitress last night. She was a very attractive lady once you got past the facial piercing and all the tattoos. Seriously both arms had full sleeves as well as both legs being completely covered. Also her back was covered, a least the three quarters of it that was showing. No we didn't go to. Strip club, but a fancier Mexican restaurant near our home. You see even wanting to be different, I still find that I make judgement calls, but I'm working on it. She was an excellent waitress, even helped us get out the door quick when she heard our kids were freaking out last night because of the tornado.

Although I would suggest to you that the root of most things is genetics and education. Even that isn't exactly correct but I won't add anything else myself because a) once I get going I won't stop and b) someone always gets offended.

Well, as Dave said, we are all unique individuals, non conformists, the people at the music festival will be dressed in whatever they like, and that can range from bland to "Wow! amazing!" all the way to "What were they thinking?" and they will all speak and act in interestingways.

Conformacist societies always seem a bit bland wanting all to be the same in all things

oh yeah... I can do without conformist peeps...in-laws are the essence of that spirit... my father in law even coined the phrase: he who does not work has no need to eat...would you want someone like that around your kids???

@Vik, my father in-law is accepting of me being a stay at home dad, even though before we got married he layed down the law about me being the bread winner and supporting the family. Just friday i heard on the radio that here in the states 40% of households the women are the primary bread winners now as oppossed to ten years ago when only 12% were. Unemployement figures heavily into this, as does single mom families, but we are seeing a big chage in society now. I wasnt expecting my father-in-law to be understanding, he is working n wife number 6 or 7, we've lost track, and its always him deciding the other one isnt pulling their weight.

Oh and always remeber the numbers from unemployment is only the poor souls lucky enough to get the unemployment checks, they never count the folks too proud to go for it, and the folks who have run out, when the ones who run out before finding a job but still are not working, they merely add the numbers to the lessened unemployment figures, so I say take the unemployment numbers , triple them and there is reality, of course the truth would hurt more, and it is not the governments' fault, but the businesses for not hiring folks except those who are job hopping and working already.

the same game is running with unemployed statistics here in germany too... we have lots of educational programs for unemployed... it is a market all by itself now... but those that attend these are not among the unemployed numbers as they are then doing something else...

well, once you get lopped off the unemployment check rolls, they consider you no longer adding to the issues, and they can make happy noises of improvements, yet look at all the folks in need as opposed to having. How many else have to settle for "Under employment" ie partial jobs, not even a proper part tiem job, but say under 20hrs a week?

well here we have a problem... you work for over 40 hrs a week in a job... or for two together and it still doesn´t pay you enough to pay your bills... so they need to get extra payment from the government... does this sound right to you? not for me... working you bum off and still needing to beg for money from the beancounters... that is most hurtful...

Same here in the UK manipulation is the game, education programs, training schemes anything to alter the outcome of unemployment, this does not include longterm sick either.

So tripling the figure would be nearer the truth but I bet it still comes up short, it amazes me that governments think we are that naive to believe these statistics

Unfortunately LDD, most people don't know/care, until they are one of the unwashed masses(no offense meant here as I am one of those unemployed now). What gets me is more women are going to work, and getting paid less then men, then the bosses get rid of the men and hire more females. If you don't see it, you've missed the whole equal pay argument women have been making for years. Businesses say they are doing a good thing by hiring women, which isn't wrong, but if they do it unfairly just to fulfill quotas then this helps perpetuate the cycle.

Yeah, well, maybe Dave can make a poster on his new wall piece of the parody sort.

The other thing about jobseekers allowance in the UK is there are two ways to be eligible. Either have been paying national insurance for 2 years prior to unemployment or have less than a certain amount of savings in the bank.

As my last employment was only 18 months and I was careful enough to save money... I get nothing.

If I'd blown all my money, I'd be given more free money, how does that make sense...

As we were driving home today, we took a scenic route that diagonally cut through Ohio, and I marveled at the disparity between rich areas and destitute areas of a State that was once fully employed and very productive. Do you know who invented the system of Haves and Have-Nots???....The Haves did! And they'll keep it that way any chance they get!

Yeah, I see the despairity changing even around me. Some of the neighborhoods here were affluent, but are now really taking a beating. My wife's grandparents subdivision has older homes but have always been upperclass, $500k+ easily. Going over there to help out I've seen lots of those homes in serious disrepair, and yards look terrible. It's mainly older people there, it might just be the age of the people, but I think it's more financial than actual wearing down. Most of the families had previously hired lawn are people, but even that is disappearing now.

And if you are not used to good 'ole fashioned lawn care work yourself........
