New Intro: After some thought on where this army is going I decided it needed a new name. The Rotten Forge Which is now also the name of this blog. I hope you like what you see here, because it doesn't look like I'm stopping anytime soon. There is however, a lot of early stuff on the first few pages, so if you came here for the name and idea, start at page 16 from where I'll try to follow the concept a bit more.
Here's the early fluff: There was a Forgeworld (named "something with P in it Prime) that got caught in a Warpstorm which was actually an invasion. The facilities came under siege by Death Guard and demon forces. Nurgle's pleagues usually come from the demons, but he stronghold in Imperial space. Even with the Imperial Guard that were stationed in the sector, the Forgeworld eventually got overrun and the survivers were welcomed into the fray. Now the planet produces Warmachines for Nurgle and is only known as
Original Post
So, here's something interesting for you.
As I have stated before, I'm not a big fan of the new Codex (Chaos) Space Marines since they took out most of the fun stuff and made Demons a standalone army. But to me Demons were always a part of a themed Chaos army and those generic losers just don't cut it. I said it before, I would prefer to play Chaos in Apocalypse only, so that Ican use real Demons with my Death Guard.
Which brings me to the other topic. Since I've first read the Lost and the Damned rules in Eye of Terror I wanted a "human" Nurgle army in one way or the other. But the ForgeWorld traitor guard list is rather dull. Besides CC Ogryns, there's not really anything interesting in it.
But hey, there's a Guard Codex on the way and I always liked the concept of Traitor Guard and since I currently can't stand to paint another Ork I decided this might be a nice distraction.
So right now, I have a few goals:
- "fix" my Death Guard Infantry units. Since Sacred Number is no longer important, I though I might just make a few 10 men squads instead of just 7.
- Build a small "Traitor Guard" force. This involves a few modeling projects I have in various stages of process.
- Get me some more demons. I still have a bunch of unpainted Nurglings lying around and I was thinking of getting some plastic Gouls to convert into Plaguebringers.
- Get more Forge World stuff
Here are the first pics:
The Forge World Demon Prince. I just painted the skin and glued him together, it will take some time to make him look more like my greater Demon of Nurgle from Forge World.
These are my work in progress cultists/conscripts for the Guard list. Kitbashing is fun.
And some more stuff for the guard. 2 Psykers, 2 Priests, a FW Traitor and a Berserker Ogryn.
And some more w.i.p. stuff. The guy on the far right is a radical Inquisitor I'm working on as well. I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do with the 2 guys in the back yet. Maybe I'll convert the other Forge World mini to be a Heretek or something like that.
I still have tons of other stuff lying around, but I don't want to take pics of my bitz box all night
Let's just say that, when my old store closed I got a very good offer on 3 Obliterators and a handfull of Mordor Trolls.

@Llamahead: the Rogue Inquisitor was originally supposed to be "just" rogue, hence the Chaos weapons, but you gave me a nice idea.
Maybe he he caught one of Nurgle's plagues, and working for them is the only way he can rid himself of it.

Here's a small update. I worked a bit on my old Chaos Sorcerer. Until recently, he still had the old Psi-sword but I thought he needed a new one.
My idea was, that he actually took the blade from a Champion of Tzeentch he defeated and now wields it himself. He's sort of a book keeper for Nurgle, and whenever one of the plagues don't turn out the right way, he has the permission to destroy them with the magical flames of Nurgle's most hated enemy.
Oh, I forgot the name. He's called Jakobus van Kreutzfeld.

Liking this army man did a plague marine army in last ed when Plaguebearers were Plaguebearers not ommmm daemons conjured up from a Oujia Board.
That is sorely lacking now that the lists have been split like the use of Skaven/Guard parts on your Traitors I used Skaven parts extensively in my Plague Marine army the plague monk heads were amazing for my possessed also the arms tails and hooded heads fitted on CSM's with shoulder pads fitted over them.
I also had a Terminator squad converted from plastics (Plastic Space Marine Terminators had just come out)and Skaven Clanrat heads and my Dread I called Mr Green Stuff (Bad Conversion long story)
To the point however the myriad of choices are really good when it comes to Plague Marines only thing is its a shame with what they've done to the list just plain silly!

Felt like I should update this is on a more regular basis then I do with my Ork blog.
The on the left is my 2nd priest for the traitor guard army. I figured since Eviscerators are just better power fists anyway, I could give him one right from the start.
On the right you see another model I want to use as (ex-)priest. It's amazing how a story just pops into your head while your modeling. So, she was a Sister Repentia, but when she got infected with Nurgle's plagues her fellow battlesister turned on her and she lost faith in the Emporer. Or something like that....I dunno
The guy in the middle is one of two enginseers I want in this army. The other one will be the Forge World Titan Techpriest with some minor changes. This guy is obviously based on a Ringwraith, but not from GW, but from a smaller company who did a LotR collectible game with a larger scale. Now he's an Adept of the machine god. Or is he......
edit: the FW Demon Prince is coming along nicely.

So, I'm (almost) done with the Demon. Maybe I'll take some more pictures tomorrow in dayligth, these pics don't look quite as good as the model.
Below you can also see the first 3 cultists and a penal legionaire and below that the 2 Engine Seers. The concept with the Necron guy was kinda, that he was supposed to infiltrate the army (like the Necron in Xenology did) but then the whole army turned away from the Imperium and started worshipping Nurgle and he just got pulled along. Since everybondy thinks he's just a cogboy, nobody noticed the lack of plague and sickness on him... yet
The other one is just the Forge World Titan priest with a minor conversion. I'm thinking about not giving him his regular servo arms, because franky, they're a pain in the ass to assemble.
Next up would probably the snail guy who came with the Demon Prince and after that...well, let's just say this army is in desperate need of a Superheavy

Thank you. I'm currently working on the Terminators and another Priest. The Ts are, as usual from FW, overly detailed and it will take some time to do them justice.

Post by: Anung Un Rama
Another small update. The ForgeWorld Chaos Terminators have quite a lot of details. I'm not done yet with this guy, but I thought I'd share the current status. His green looks healthier than I expected. I'm not sure if I should leave it like that or drybrush with another coat of camo or something. I kinda like how he looks, but it's not very Nurgly. I'm still thinking about the claws. Either I make them more green, so they look poisonous, or I'll paint some blue and white lightning on them to serve as a contrast. Next are two models for my traitor guard army. The right one is a corrupted Sororita Repentia which I will use as a Priest. You can joke about the safety stripes on the deadly weapon, but I think it looks awesome. I'm not sure about the other one though. I'll either use him as a Psyker or an Astropath in a Command Squad. And last the first test model for a unit of Plaguebearers. The eye is a bit big, but apart from that I like him. Or do you guys have any suggestions on how I could improve him?

Some very nice stuff.
I do agree that the terminator looks a bit too clean-cut and not particularly nurgly, at this point.
But the plagebearer conversion looks very much in character -- I like the eye particularly. And the Sororita Repentia-as-priest is an inspired idea.

In my opinion, the Plague bearers need more work at the conversion stage. If I were looking at this out of context, I would think that they were ghouls with 40K stuff stuck on them rather than immediately identifying them as plague bearers.
Try converting the other models to stand upright, I think that this would go a long way to improving them.
check out the conversions this guy has done for his plague bearers. You share a similar intention:

Woha nice conversions, what kits did you use for the cultist guardsmen?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
@Twisted_Trasher: I start with a layer of gretchin green as foundation on black primer. Once you have a solid green foundation you can oaint it with rotting flesh and from there you just add various inks and washes.
@Master Llyons: Catachans, Cadians, Zombies, Empire Flagelants and Skaven Plague Monks.

In an effort to update this blog more regularly I have a few more pics I want to share.
While I loved painting the big Forgeworld demons, the small Herold which comes with the Demon Prince wasn't that much fun. I'm not even sure why I don't like it, but it just won't work. I wanted to do something different with him, but I just don't like it. But since there's so much other stuff I have to paint, I'll move on for now.
Then there's the Terminator. I brushed the armor again with a mix of gretchin green and rotting flesh and now it looks a bit less healty. I don't want to add any more rotting flesh though, so that the demons will still have a distinct look when standing next to the Marines.
And I build a few more Plaguebringers, even managed to make smaller eyes this time around. It's quite a paint to find fitting swords for these guys though, since their arms and hands are so thin.
btw. does anyone have an idea where I could get Zombie horses? I want to build a caveraly unit for the Traitor guard, but it could be a bit expensive if they all ride the horse from the Fantasy Nurgle Champion I would also appreciate it, if anyone could tell me how the Death Korps of Krieg Cavalery riders are attached to their feet. Could I swap out the bodies without too much work?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
You might have to model up a zombified horse out of skeleton horse from warhammer fantasy and cast a few copies in resin. I know it's a long process but you would end up with something pretty unique

My modeling skils are DEFINETLY not that good. I'm happy I can sculpt things like "one giant eyeball". Horse body parts are completly out of the question.

Among the things I really want to have in this army at some point in the future is my very own model of the Demon Primarch Mortation. I even have a pretty good idea what parts I want to use, so I used photoshop to make a "concept sketch". Your thoughts?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
Genius, I personally don't like the robe thing at the bottom but it will give it a decent height which will make it more impressive on the table. Have you thought about putting the carrion wings on one of the new sanguinary blood angel dudes? their power armour seems to show stripped muscles which would fit with the bare flesh wings and then you could arm it from there, just a thought but the p'shop mock up is looking good so far.
10345
Post by: LunaHound
If its me , i would cover the leg up completely , and make some sort of entrails hanging emerging from the robes
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Carrion wing always seem quite suitable for nurgle daemon princes. Just for the record: IIRC, the epic mortarion was fully cloaked and holding a scythe. While the armour is definitely an improvement (not to mention this is 28mm scale so you need more detail), the scythe is so iconically Nurgle that you should include it IMO.
The carrion wings are one piece btw; if you want to mesh it with the armour, you're looking at some heavy-duty cutting greenstuffing. Good luck with the conversion, looking forward to it!
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
When I used the carrion wings on my celestine I just kept wings together and Greenstuffed it to the back of the model, the nub on the wings fitted fairly well to the hole in the back of the armour that is for the backpack. It left quite a hump on the back but it was no bigger than a backpack and looks fairly good, kind of like a lump of muscle where the wings ttached to the back. I havn't seen the epic mortarion but I like the idea of a scythe as well.

I would give him a scythe/manreaper instead of the sword.
Also maybe use the night bringers head for that gaunt look as going by his description in the book he seems to pretty much rock the Death look.
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
Thanks for al the feedback guys (and gals). @BLACKHAND: I really want to use the Nightbringers lower body, because I want him to be tall, but not as huge as the regular demon prince. I've seen pictures of the new BA character, but I think the wings might be a bit small. Apart from that, the wings are the one piece I already own. @Luna: To be honest, I never was a big fan of the whole entrails-hanging-out thing, that some Nurgle models have. It looks good on my greater demon, but I don't like it on more human models. Looks a bit ridiculous. Interesting photoshop though. The leg will be covered up. @Khaine: I didn't even know there was an epic model for him. Everytime I google search I only come up with some selfmade models or artwork from the TCG. @TaintedMess: This is still in a concept stage, I just added the techpriest head, beause I needed something with a hood. I'm not entirely sold on using Nightbringers head, because I want him not to look too much like him. @everybody: Yes, of course he will wield a scythe, but I'm not sure where I could get one yet. I'll probably build one out of a stick and a Tyranid blade. Automatically Appended Next Post: @BLACKHAND: I read your post wrong. I want to use the nightbringer and an Inquisitor scale model as base, a regular Marine would be much too small.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
The epic model was basically just the grim reaper:
Bottom of this page for a glimpse of the old mortarion on solegends
And he's even on dakka!
I definitely feel the power armour is an improvement over the epic model though; keep it!

Post by: Anung Un Rama
Thanks Khaine. I'm really not impressed by that model, I'll go with my concept. Does anyone have a picture from the Inquisitor Chaos Magus next to a Nightbringer so I can make sure it fits?
Still not sure what I could use for a head though. I'm afraid if I keep the Nightbringer head he'll just look like a C'tan with a chestplate.

Nice work on the army so far, your painting style really suits the Nurgle units- everything looks in a state of decay which is great.
I'm starting a Nurgle-based Renegade IG/Death Guard force for Apoc (just waiting on the first Renegade upgrade kit to arrive from FW)- what colours do you use to simulate the necrotic tissue?
Very nice work though, I'll probably watch so I can get ideas for my own force.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
What look will you be going for with the head, Anung Un Rama? If you don't like any heads, you could always sculpt the hood forward a lot, casting a shadow over he face.
Afterthought: the Inquisitor henchmen pack may have a nice head?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
@Neith: for skin I usually start with a layer of gretchin green as foundation, then I either paint it completly or just heavily drybrush it with rotting flesh. After that I use various inks, mostly Thraka Green and Ogryn Flesh and sometimes I drybrush it again slightly with rotting flesh.
@Khaine: I'm not sure yet, I'll yet you know if I find anything.

I liek them; they look real Nurgley. One nitpick though:: the eye ont he middle plaguebearer doens't 'flow' into the face as well as some of the others; I think that, since it's such a focal point on these models, that you should really focus on getting these 100% right. Probably couldn't get it to this level though, so still kudos!

So, my Inquisitor scale chaos mage arrived, though I have to wait a bit more for the Nightbringer. However, the body is smaller than I thought, which works just fine for me, I was afraid it might be too big. Here's a shot of the parts I have so far: No I have a few problems I would like to have your opinions on: - robe and hood: The way I see it, if I want to combine the parts like I did in the photoshop mock-up, I have two options. Either Try to model robe parts over the armor, which I am fairly certain I can't pull off or have him wear the armor over the robe, so that only the "legs" and his head will be covered in cloth. Does that make sense? Because I don't see any other way. - the head: I'm still not sure how to do this. My current idea is to file down the top of the head which came with the model so that you can see almost nothing from his face. I only have a few other =][= heads lying around and none of them would work better than the supplied with the model. - the wings: you can't see it in the pic, but the large shoulder armor extends at the back and the wings wont fit there directly. So I will either have to file it down at the back or have to put something in between the wings and the body. I don't want to cut them in half, since it's such a great looking piece on its own. - the scythe: my current plan for the scythe is using the Minotaur weapons as shaft ( SHAFT!) for the scythe and use the Tyranid sword as a blade, though I'm open to other suggestions. I hope I can get my hands on Eisenhorn's staff, but I'm not sure my brother is willing to rip it off his own conversion. - the other hand: now this one's tricky. I had to cut o the Bolt Pistol the original model had, because that would just look ridicously out of scale but now I'm not sure what to put there instead. I thought I still had the cut-off trophy hand from the Quovandius model lying around but I just could't find it. I was considering using either an Ogre steel fist, the hand from an Obliterator, or one idea I had just a few minutes ago, a Chaos Terminator power fist, which is big enough to look like his regular hand and doesn't look weird next to his other one. That's pretty much it at the moment. Feedback would be much appreciated.

Post by: BLACKHAND
Heya Rama heres my two cents, - the robe and hood, If the armour is detailed and looks good, go with it. you can always GS a robe over it at a later point when your Gs Fu is stronger. - The head is kinda hard to see in the pic but if its mostly covered by hood do you need to file it down? my only thought is once you've filed it off you can't go back. Make the hood deep enough and use enough badab black when you paint and it will look deep in shadow anyway. - I used the same wings in my celestine conversion and had a hard time fixing them to the model as well. As the space wasn't too far I filled it with GS and sculpted more feathers and bones in. If it's quite a gap in your case shave off some armour, you won't see it with the wings on and the hood can extend a bit to cover any mess. - I think the scythe will be fine with the minatuar shaft ( hehe) and nid blade, you can always GS a few chains and skulls later to add detail. Saves choppin an Eisenhorn up just for a staff! - Not sure about the other hand but a termie fist would be armoured like the rest of the model and I do like the clawed fingers on the chaos models My last tip would be to get your hand on some blenders, or at least thats what my local art shop calls them, they are a silicone rubber tip attached to a paintbrush shaft (hehe) and you use them after roughing out your GS cloth. They smooth out any wrinkles and fingerprints and generally make your cloth look like..well cloth Cheers Rama hope some of that makes sense

I regularly wear plate armour, and while the tabard usually goes over the breastplate, people have been know to wear them underneath to show off the breastplate or to prevent the cloth interfering with the pauldrons. So yes, it's definitely possible and realistic
Head, wings and scythe sound ok as far as I can tell.

A second blade or axe? Or maybe you could model an open hand and add a small carrion bird/nurgling? The terminator fists would look fine as well, I'm just trying to add to the confusion

Post by: Anung Un Rama
So, as requested here a few picks of the parts together:
I've tried a few things.
- Ogre fists are out. They look ugly on the model.
- My brother suggested I should just the entire Obliterator arm, that's the upper picture. I'm not entirely convinced to be honest. Though the fleshy parts would fit well with the wings.
- the second pic is how the Terminator fist would look like on the arm. So far my favourite.
- the 3rd is a photoshop mock-up to see if I couldn't just use the entire hand with the axe handle, which result in me glueing fewer parts together, but the hand is pretty big, so I'll probably stick with the regular one.
- the last picture is shopped to see how the Obliterator fist would look like on the models regular arm.
@BLACKHAND: I want to file it down so the head is a bit smaller, which I think would work better. It's supposed to be a bigger Marine/Demon, not an -][- scale mini.
@Rose_Mountain: there you go.
@Khaine: thanks, that's waht I wanted to hear. I don't want to give him a second weapon though. And if, I would need another hand.

Post by: BLACKHAND
I think the scale of the terminator fist is better then the obliterator fist imo
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Termie fist looks great IMO! I'd consider inverting it though, to make him look like he's summoning daemons or beckoning his enemy forward.
Would a shield be an option if you don't want an additional hand weapon? He looks more or less at ease right now, so a shield facing backwards would create a very 'open' pose, if you get what I mean. Failing al that, wouldn't a right oblit arm be an option? If you don't like that either, his hand is in a correct pose for a firearm; scratchbuild him a Samaritan

I like your idea Khaine. I think I'll go with the hand turned the other way around.
The Scythe is going to be a real pain though, I can already tell.

Post by: Anung Un Rama
I've been working on the left arm. For some reason the guy had a Tau shrinkhead on his shoulder plate which I just removed. It was real pain, but once the torso is attached to the wings you won't see the part anyway.
Speaking of wings, I totally forgot that the other arm also has a large shoulder pad, so I'll have to find a way to put something between his back and the wings and I hope it won't be only greenstuff.
Since I'll still have to wait for my Nightbringer a bit longer, I may start working on the head next.
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
I've run into a bit of a problem. The way the arm is attached to the torso, the scythe would go right through his wings so I had to cut of the lower arm and will pin it back in another position. I just put the parts together for testing, let me know what you think.

Really coming along well Rama, the pose of the arms looks good, I don't know why you were worried about the scythe it came up awesome.
You should get your hands on a paint blender to smooth your GS cloth, I know its made a real difference to my work at least.
Can't wait to see the wings on it!

Post by: Anung Un Rama
The Scythe is not in its final position. I'll have to glue on the wings first and then check how I can pose the arm so it will fit just under them.
I've extended the hood a bit more and will file it down in the morning, it should be dry enough by then.

This is looking really cool!
However, the wings are going to look ridiculously out of proportion, in my opinion.
You might try to pop the wings off this guy?

They're much bigger and more dynamic looking, and the model is cheap.

Inquisitor scale Chaos sorcerer. You can get it over the mail order. The scythe is a Tyranid sword.

Note: this is still wip. While the robe is at the spot I want it to be, it turned out to be bit thinner then I expected (though on the plus side, I can use the Nighbringers torso and head on normal legs). So I guess he doesn't have feet anymore. I'm not going to try and work some Marine legs into the robe, I think it's okay for a demon Primarch to change his shape if needed and he gets more of a "Grim Reaper"-feel like that.
He's still far from done though. I'm going to add a bit more cloth and probably extend the armor and the cables running down from it a little more.
I'm not sure about the base. atm, it's just for the GS and glue to dry properly but I was considering putting him on a 60mm base.
Let me know what you think.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
A bit thin at the waist, as has been said before, but I love the pose. I don' think the legs would be encessary, he looks a lot more threatening this way, definitely more grim reaper. Integrating the two bitz will be essential to make this work but I'm sure you can pull it off!

bloody brilliant work. my only grip at the moment is that morty has a plasma cannon pistol not a powerfist
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
I did not know that.
Then again, it's not really supposed to be a powerfist, just a larger fist to fit the Inquisitor scale torso. I'm not that sure a pistol would work a model like that anyway.

Post by: SickSick6
And we are talking Post-Heresy here. Are there any records of what weapons he uses as a DP?

Post by: BLACKHAND
The robe definitely fits the scythe and the rest of the model, I would think about adding something between the waist and the start of the robes to get the length of the model right. There would be some major Greenstuffing to add wider robes that would meet the nightbringer robes but I think he needs to be taller and that midsection is the place to add the height.
just my 2 cents
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
I thought about it BH, but decided against it. I probably wouldn't be able to pull it off. My green stuff skills are shoody enough as it is. I did work on the mid section a little more though. I extended the cloth around the waist a bit and I'm not sure if I can improve that section anymore. Actually, I'm already ripping off some of the GS while typing this. I'll probably prime him tomorrow, I want to finally get to paint him.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
If you have guitar wire available, you could run some down his chest, elongating the tubes on his armour; that would help add some detailing.
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
So, primings done, now I need to figure out which colors I can use. The problem is, there are so many different parts. I usually paint cloth on my Nurgle models in a brownish white to serve as a contrast for green armor, but I still have the feathers and the bones to paint.
22039
Post by: Rose_Mountainz
Raven or vulture inspired wings maybe?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
You mean black? That's a thought. I was going to paint them, well, brownish white, but black might work better.
22039
Post by: Rose_Mountainz
Yeah it could work I think, not sure though, but test it if you want to.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Painting the wings a dark colour would help frame the face. Black also fits the whole "I am DEATH" thing he has going on. It's nice to see the model undercoated; it really brings all the parts together.
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
The wings have bone parts right? so why not paint thefeathers black and do the bones in the same brown/white as the robes then give everything a green wash of some kind to bring it together?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
Nah, that's the problem. I don't want to paint the bones in the way as the robe. And I will use green wash only for the flesh. btw.: what do you guys think, should I try to add a little red on the fleshy parts of the wings?
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
I painted mine as undead flesh, and I think it does'nt have enough contrast with the bone. Go with the red
25543
Post by: TyraelVladinhurst
maybe go with your first idea with the wings and make his robes black? just a thought
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
BLACKHAND wrote:I painted mine as undead flesh, and I think it does'nt have enough contrast with the bone. Go with the red
That's a very good point you have there. I'm just not sold on the red yet, because apart from the larger Demons I work with a rather small color pallete.
TyraelVladinhurst wrote:maybe go with your first idea with the wings and make his robes black? just a thought
Hmm.. I'm not sure about that one. It would work better on the wings since they are so detailed, the robe has too many flat spaces.
25543
Post by: TyraelVladinhurst
you make a valid point, maybe make his robes white then as a symbol of the old death guard colors
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
What about using an almost brown shade of red for the flesh so it looks like it is just starting to rot but never made it that far? Also if you are goingto paint the feathers black what about some blueish hilights like an actual raven has?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
The brwonish red sounds like an idea, but there won't be any blue on this model. Blue is for plasma and power swords only. Blue and green rarely work together.

@Anung , here is a good idea from me :3
Paint one wing black with minor dark gray high light
Paint the other wing bleached bone white ish , with devland mud shade.
You get contrast to the armor , you get the contrast to wing to wing,
and you get an omg cool color scheme.
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
Interesting idea Luna, though I'm not sure if it's what I want for this model. Remember, I still have to paint bones sticking out of the wings and the robe is also brownish white. It would result in 3 parts with similar colors all of which are completly different material.

i still say brilliant work, keep it up

Post by: Anung Un Rama
So I didn't get around to make the real mock-up yet, but I might as well write about how this idea came to be. A few weeks ago, my brother and I got invited to another 40k group. The guys we played with before were very... competetive and focused on tournaments and optimizing their lists. This new group however was more the way I like it. Almost everyone has one or more awesome Theme Army and most of it is painted or in the process of being painted. Short: my kinda 40k! One of the guys plays Iron Warriors (based on the Space Wolf Codex) and he told me, he build himself a Plague Tower equivalent, based on to tower from the Dark Angel Fortress, but with legs instead of wheels. My mind was blown! Since that day I can't stop thinking about building my own Plague Tower for my army. After some thought, like he did, I dissmissed the idea of having the tower based on the old Warhammer Siege Tower, because that would just look rather stupid, being a wooden construction on a battlefield like that. The concept of wheels or tracks got also scrapped after a while, because I could't think of a way to build it, that wouldn't make it look like I just build a tower on top of a tank. So building a Plague Tower on Defiler legs might not exactly be my idea, but that never stopped me before. I decided to base it on the 40k Cities of Death buildings, the Manofactorum in particular. That got me thinking on how the tower was build in the first place. Since my Traitor Guard force is also (supposed to be) growing I thought to myself: would it be too far fetched, that a Dark Mechanicus Priest actually used Civilian buildings to build a Warmachine? So it would basically come down to.. well, a walking Tower. The idea behind this was, that the Priest bound a Demon to a building and then added Defiler parts (or something similar) to the bottom, for the Demon to pull himself out of the ground. Based on that concept, my brother had an awesome idea: The tower is still carrying parts of the city with him. So I might add a bit of street around the base, maybe a lamp post and some sewer parts underneath. That's also where I could put the big vomit cannon or whatever it's called. I'll make another concept picture later, but so far I have the following plans: - based on the Manofactorum building, 2 walls wide, 3 walls high - a huge front door on the first level for embarking - a Demolisher cannon on the 2nd and 3rd level - balconies, one on each side, but not on the same level, so I can put embarked models there this is all more in my head than actully in building (as usual with most of my stuff ), but I thought I'd share it with you anyway. My biggest fear atm is, that one set of Defiler legs won't be enough.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Sounds cool . As for the defiler legs: if you modify the arms, you have six legs. This should more then enough to carry the tower, though eight would be more apropriate for chaos
19931
Post by: BLACKHAND
I like the idea of the sewer pipes being converted to the vomit cannon, A bit of Gs work could make it look like it's half transformed into a throat maybe?
And yeah , the more legs the better!

I've been working on a few smaller models. The plan for the Demon part of my army is to field several 7-man squads of Plague Bearers, but each should look different. So I build me another 2 based on plastic Ghouls, got me a few of the new metal ones and tried something I've wanted to build since I saw it the first time in the DH 'dex: Demon Orks:
Now all I need is to get my hands on a few more of the old 3rd edition Plague Bearers.

WOW! Amazing work on those Terminators, and the conversion from Bloodletter to Plaguebearer is sick in the best way possible and if I wasn't already set with mine I'd so try that.
You army is well thought out, has a very solid color scheme that lends cohesion from unit to unit, and the variations you have make it very interesting.
The only observation I have to offer that is not completely positive is the skin tone on your corrupted Guardsman. I hate saying that because the rest of the model is 100% win and I know it is personal preference, but I have to agree with the others, the skin tone could use some lightening.
Very well done and I'll be back!

Hi everybody! I could use your help painting the blight drones. I'm not too sure what colors to use, or, to be more precise, what exactly the armor is supposed to be. Here's the thing: the "flesh" will be painted the same way I do all the skin and flesh in this army. Gretchin green, green wash, gretchin green and rotting flesh. I also found a nice way to paint the rotors, which is dark flesh, then boltgun, brown/orange for the rust and then a layer of brown wash. Cables and stuff will be yellow. No, my problem is, I'm really not sure how I could paint the hull. I can't paint it in the same green as I do my tanks, because that lacks contrast to the bright green skind. Currently I'm trying a bony structure, but I'm not too sure about that yet. Any ideas? Also, in case you're interested, the first finished Nurgle Ork, counts as Plaguebringer.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Nurgle Ork/plaguebearer looks good. As for the carapace of the blight drone, I'd consider the same colour scheme as the rotors, since I imagine the shell is made of very corroded and pitted metal, and because the rotors look brilliant .

Thanks. I'm not too sure about it though. It makes a good contrast, but it feels lazy to paint the rotors and the hull in the same colors.

A very corroded bronze then? Though I'll agree with BLACKHAND that making it all rusty would be far from lazy...

Post by: Anung Un Rama
Maybe lazy was the wrong word. I'm just not sure about the armor and the rotors having the same color. I guess I'll give it a shot.
Unrelated crazy idea: is it just me, or is the new Skaven Monster a perfect start for a Nurgle themend Soulgrinder.

Isn't the armour supposed to be green, like the rest of your army?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
That was the original plan, but now I'm so sure anymore. The armor doesn't really look like it should have the colors and it's not a very good contrast to the bright skin.

I think having the rotor blades and the hull the same rust color is fine. I tried to find a pic of a rusted industrial fan w/ the same coloring but *fail*, hope this Ork Looted Wagon serves the same purpose.

Finished the first Blight Drone. Let me you know what you think.
The base is not quite finished yet, but I usally wait a bit to do them all in one run.
I already have some plans for the other two drones. I thought I could build one with the rotors turned forward, that is what it would do to go really fast, isn't it? And for the other one, I want to have it based on the stream of toxic sludge coming out its butt, like the one in the Imperial Armor book.
Also, I'm probably going to change the weapons. The small guns are supposed to be Reaper Autocannons, but if I want to see how real Autocannons would look down there.
As for the future of this army, I finally found the other 17 unpainted foot soldiers. If I can get them painted I'm one step closer to really fielding a Traitor Guard army and not just talk about it all the time. I'm still thinking about my next warmachine though. Either I'll try the walking Plague Tower or maybe a Plague Hulk, based on the new Skaven monster.

I can't wait to see how you'll use the Skaven Hellpit for your Plague Hulk!

Looks great Rama! The colour scheme worked out perfect. I like the idea of the rotors being twisted forward it would definitely impart a feeling of speed. Are those puny guns really supposed to be autocannons? if you wanted a couple of the smaller autocannons from the sentinel kit i have a couple lying around...probably just as easy to build them from plastic rod though.

if you are going to make it look more speedy (and that without adding red color ) I would also turn the nose of the drone a bit towards the ground. And maybe ad some slimy "speedlines"

The Soul Grinder/Abomination mashup concept looks very promising.
And (it's been too long since I checked in here) the Blight Drone paint job came out looking great.

Saw the Abominbation in the GW window today. It's a lot smaller then I expected. It won't work the way I pictured above, the best I can do is to replace the Soulgrinder body, but then his front claws won't touch the ground.

Took a closer look at the Hellpit Abomination. It might be possible to attach the entire creature to the lower body of the Soulgrinder, since the underside of the Abomination has open spaces.

Well mate, if you will build a defiler like it I'm sure it'll come out amazing. As for the head why not use a great unclean one head maybe?
2050
Post by: Anung Un Rama
The problem with the head is actualy getting one from a GUO and then fitting it on the Abomination body. Since the body is rather small, I thought maybe I could just use the fly head from the Chaos Spawn sprue, but then I'd still have the problem of a lot of necks next to it, since the Abomination has like 6 heads or something like that. February 17th? February the effin' 17th?! Gork damnit, I haven't paintend anything in over 7 weeks?! o_o Sorry guys, I was quite busy with a lot of different things, but no worries, I'm back now. Or at least I hope so. Time to put some more work into those Death Guard marines, shall we? The original plan for this army was and still is, that each unit should feel different from the one before. Also, when possible, I want to field 7-man squads. It's a pain to do with Terminators, but for Marines, it should work quite well. I wanted every unit to have at least one special weapon, though I expect once the new codex arrives it won't be possible to field 2 special weapons in unit with fewer then 10 models. And, in line with the current book, I wanted every unit to carry a standard for summening demons. But enough talk. Have at ye! One squad is based on the "classic" Plague Marines. Mostly old metal models, with some minor conversions. The second unit I build, inspired by a Chaos Army I once saw in the golden days of the White Dwarf, when GW employees were still allowed to do conversions. I hope the theme in this one comes through. When I started the army, I wanted all of my veterans and Termies if possible to be covered in rags and cloth and maybe add a few Dark Angel models. That didn't work out, but it's still a nice way to get some variety into an army. This unit consists mostly of the new Death Guard metal models. And, because I still had so many special weapons lying around, I gave in and build me a havoc squad. I hope that one day I will be able to field real Death Guard havocs again and not just Space Marines who have to carry a big stick so they won't forget how to fart. I'm in desperate need of attention, give me some feedback.

I'M PAINTING AGAIN!!!
Seriously, it must've been at least 3 months. But now I'm back and I have multiplied my productivity by listening to music while painting instead of watching sitcoms.
Jokes aside, I have a lot of work to do. Currently I'm painting a bunch of troops for my Traitor Guard, but I still have 2 Blight Drones waiting for me and recently ordered a Talos which I will somehow integrate into my greater Nurgle army once I found a better use than just another Spawn.

Not much, but it's coming along.
The plan for my Traitor Guard is, that I want to field one Platoon based on the Forgeworld Traitor models and another using Catachan parts with the leftover Cadian torsos and different heads.
And probably conscripts based on Empire flagelants and Plague Monks as seen on the first page.

I'm probably gonna work on my Talos next, though I still don't know how I could use him. There's nothing interesting in the Guard codex and I have more than enough models for various Chaos Spawns.
I'll probably take the rules from another book and only use it in Apocalypse games. The Tyranid Venomtrope seems like a good idea, if I can get enough smockstacks on its back. On the other hand, the Talos is a real beast. But it would feel cheap to use a Talos as a Talos.

I really like the Vet. The Rewards of Chaos are from fickle gods who either don't understand or don't care that not all of their attentions are to the benefit of the recipient. I think the art of understatement is being lost in 40K. I completely understand what bigfish is saying, but do not necessarily agree that the Vet needs to be different.
He does need a backbanner, though. And a plasma cannon.
As always, stunning and inspiring work. Your Traitor Guard are just ... wow, I get all excited when I see stuff like this. I really really really like this thread. A lot.

I ordered a few more Forge World parts and I'll probably have to order some more regular guard stuff as well. I guess I'll do a Command squad next and finish a Veteran squad. That the way the army will at least be fieldable. (is that a real word?)
I've been thinking about the Veterans a little bit more. Not sure how I could equip them yet, but I'l try how Ork torsos will look on the bigger Beastmen legs.

Here's a few text updates, since I'm too lazy to take pictures:
1. I did not forget about the walking Plaguetower or the Abomination Defiler. It's just not in the budget at the moment.
2. You know what looks really cool on a Forge World Techpriest? Dark Eldar parts.
3. I ordered more Traitor Guard torsos and and a Krieg rider from Forgeworld. If my plan works out, I might have some really awesome Nurgle cavalery.
4. I have a Scavy gang lying around, but I'm not really sure as what I could use them. I'm not sure if I like the Penal Legionaires. They would sure look awesome in a regular Gaurd force, but they wouldn't really stand out in my army. So I'm considering using them as another Veteran squad. Maybe as the one with Meltabombs.
5. Speaking of Veterans, I still want to do a unit based on guard parts with Beastmen legs, though I'm not sure as what to use them. I think they would look great as the stealth squad for Seargant Harker, but the model I have in mind for him, a Necromunda Scaly with a heavy machine gun, doesn't have hoves, so he would't really fit it.
6. Sooner or later I have to get me a Hellhound. I can't believe the Imperial Guard has a tank that can fire toxic sludge. It's like they made this book for me. xD
7. Ratling snipers seem to be a much better choice then regular snipers. Still thinking about how I could build them. I'm thinking Skaven plague monks with empty hoods.
8. Ogryns are a must have for this army. I'm considering combining them with Oblitorators. And I still have a few LotR Trolls lying around.
9. On ther marine side, I'll have some more painting to do, before I can field them again.
10. I also still have two unpainted Blight Drones waiting for me.
11. And Nurglings.
12. And I really have to build those other 4 Plaguebearer Orks.
Read you later.

Thanks for the link, I really appreciate it.
I *love* those old school Plaguebearers! I have a bunch of them that I used to run in my Death Guard during 2nd Ed before they got nerfed into "one size fits all" for tourney play. Feh. I can't wait for 5th ed to die a horrible withering death.
Scavvies in this army... would be kind of lost as stock model but w/ a bit of GS they would become anything you wanted them to be. I really like how you can take a random model from whatever force (40K or WFB) and make it work in your army w/o an issue.
Your "to do" list is massive. Makes me feel lucky that I have only (*thinking*...) uhm... yeah. I stopped thinking about it, my brain started to hurt. I'm logging off Dakka and going to go get some work done.

Post by: Anung Un Rama
It's been a while since my last game, so when my brother went for another round with our 40k group I decided to tag along and have a quick game on my own. I never really "played" Demons, so I thought I could give them a try just for kicks, now that I actually have 3 units of Plaguebearers. Long story short: I lost against Blood Angels but it took him a while to kill all my stuff. After round 5 he had one of the two objectives and almost had me completly wiped out. Except for Mamon, who is tougher and cheaper than anything I can field with the Demon 'dex alone. The Plague Drone wasn't shot down till the end, but my rolls were horrible so it didn't actually do anything. Except looking insanly cool. The Beasts of Nurgle didn't to anything, but I have so many cool models for them. While unpacking my army, I noticed something else. Something I've noticed before and what ticks me off every time. Here's the thing. I'm an Ork player. I love me some Space Orks. They're my first army and will always have a special place in my green heart. But it annoys the hell out of me, realising how much better a Space Marine army, or an Eldar army or even my Chaos Demons look like on the table, simply because they fit together so much better than the giant ragtag force of Orks I've collected over the last 10 years. The flair will be probably be lost once I field the "triple army of doom" but right now I'm actually kinda annoyed how good my army looks on the table, conseridng that I never planed to actually field them as a single force.

I really enjoyed seeing everything together in one shot. It's very cohesive and looks great.
I used to be an Ork player as well (was my first army and love of 40K) but I doubt I'll field them again, the "scale creep" makes my Nobs in 'Eavy Armor look like Grots in Power Armor. My Dreadnoughts are smaller than Killa Kans now. The change in rules have made my individual clans pointless. Gaah.

As I've said, I still have a Scavy gang lying around. Here's a pic from the GW site.
I'll probably use the Scaly as my Seargent Harker for the Veteran squad, even though I'm not sure if it would fit, when the rest of the squad has hooves.
And I just have to do something cool with the leader. He just screams for a big part in my armyn but I can't decide as what. He's a bit puny to be my big HQ, but it'd be a shame if he ended up as a simple seargent.

I've been thinking about the Talos a little more. After adding 2 more smoke stacks I decided there is only one way to go. I will use this model: With this guy's rules: Yeah, it's 'nid, so what. This army is supposed be played mostly on Apocalypse games anyway. Though that does mean, that I'll have to get rid of the crab arm. And I used plastic glue. And, I wasted the Chaos Spawns long tentacle arm on a Demon Ork conversion, so I'll have to make due with the regular chaos tentacle, attached to a larger arm.

My Forge World order arrived, though I won't get my hands on it till monday. Still, now I have enough parts to build at least one command squad which makes this army almost fieldable.
On a side note, I've been playing Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D recently and almost regretted, that I never really did do that Resident Evil-themed army I always wanted. Those different soldier majinis would make an awesome army. Ah well, maybe I'd build a Necromunda gang or something similar some point in the future.

Sooner or later I'll have to add a few models from the Warmachine Cryx range to this army. Here are a few ideas: When the guard part of this army is done, I expect to have 3 command squads. And each one will get one of these guys as a medic. Close combat Servitors Or, if I'm lucky, the new Sisters 'dex will have decent rules for Repentias. In any case, these guys might work better as Servitors. Special Weapons squad with "flamers" I really have no idea, but I want one. Let me know what you think.
