Okay, here we go...

Alright six months ago I started researching, sketching, sculpting and acquiring models for a Slaaneshi daemon army. Got off to a good start and then got side tracked by the siren song of a all true-scale Black Templar army, more on that later... Anyway, here we go again. Now the goal here is to create a playable tournament army, that both unique and characterful. So, will be no stock GW models, everything will be getting some sort of conversion. These conversion with be heavily influenced by "Slaves to Darkness" and Liber Chaotica". While, I'm not going for perversion, there will be some naughty bits, we are talking Slaanesh after all. Hopefully you all can help me stay motivated. All comments and critiques are most welcome.

Since in Codex Daemons pretty much forces you to use a mixed gods list. I'm using "count as" to keep things Slaaneshi.

Here's what I have planned so far:

HQ:

1x Keeper of Secrets (Forgeworld Conversion)

1x Keeper of Secrets (Custom):

6x Heralds:

4x Chariots (converted chariots w/ plastic seekers):

Elites:

12x Pleasureseekers (converted plastic daemonettes mounted on winged steeds of Slaanesh) = counts as Fiends

12x Wyrms (winged snakes w/ steeds of Slaanesh style heads) = counts as Flamers

12x Gluttons (converted ogre bulls = counts as Blood Crushers)

Troops:

40x Daemonettes (GW 6th edition - metal daemonettes)

80x Daemonettes (GW Plastic Daemonettes w/ reposing and weapon swaps)

12x Slayers (GW Plastic Daemonettes converted to running poses w/ custom bliss giver swords) = counts as Bloodletters

24x Tormentors (converted grave ghouls is B/SM gear) = Plaguebearers

24x Gorgons (GW Plastic Daemonettes w/ floaty hair, blazing eyes, and ghoul arms) = Horrors

1x Changeling (a plastic daemonette in a commissar cap, jacket, and bolt pistol)

6x Terror Tot Bases (Converted Wyrd Miniature - Lilth Brood):

Fast:

36x Seekers (Converted GW Plastic Seekers)

12x Furies (Converted Plastic Daemonettes w/ feathered wings)

Heavy:

3x Slaaneshi Daemon Princesses (Custom Sculpts):

3x Slaaneshi Soul Grinders (Custom Sculpts)

Anyway photos to follow...

The Liber Chaotica inspired theme really has me excited to see how well you pull it off. Get some pics up quick!

So, lets start out with my Daemon Princess Sculpt, this is pretty rough as it still needs sanding and buffing. I've designed her to be modular so that I can make all 3 Princess models from same basic body once she's cast in resin. After which I cut up, modify the poses, detail them. Their are four different arms, three separate heads, and two different sets of wings; so lots of variation.

Here some early shots:

I plan on having three of these bad girls...boys...its? The goal is to have field up to 5 monstrous creatures in case I want to run a Demonzilla list. That and is just cool to see so many big guys on table top.

Okay more current pics of the princess in turn-around:

Yeah she's looking a little stiff at the moment but that will be rectified once I get her cast up.

Impressive army list. Almost everything on that list will be converted and/or built from scratch? I admire people with ambition! And Slaanesh will be pleased. You are doing a great job so far. Keep it up!

Here's a couple more scales shots of the the DP and some other units.

Scaled with the FW Keeper:

Now this one will be the base model for all three, but don't worry once I cast her, I'll be converting the others. I'll post some sketches later, as I'd like input on them.

I need Input on:

- armor
- tails (yes/no)
- horns
- naughty bits?

Paul Atreides: Oh, I wouldn't say that I'm dropping the androgyny, I'll leave it to the imagination whats behing those loincloths; but yes my daemons will have their breasts in pairs, be they 2, 4, or six.

Xedric: Everything will be converted or sculpted from scratch.

Tizz: There will be a lot of direct translation of Liber Chotica concepts into this list. Lets fbe honest Chaos has not be chaotic enough for a long time. John Blanche's inspired artwork from "Slave to Darkness" will be looming large here as well.

Here are some older WIP shots of my custom seekers. The details on the mount have been greatly improved since these were taken. But I thought I'd throw them up to give an idea of where this is going.

Seekers:

I'm really happy with how this turned out. As you can see here I'm trying to copy the poses of the old mounted 'nettes. The only problem is that the riders are going to be with very labor intensive, lots of cutting and repositioning, also there are only 5 of the models in a box of 'nettes that are really suitable for this. I need at least 14 of these so I'll have to come up with a couple of alternative poses as well.

Pleasureseekers:

Since I've already repositioned a few plastic 'nettes to serve a seekers, I thought I'd see how they look mounted on a Steed of Slaanesh. These will be counting as fiends in the army. I've been told that these are best taken in larger numbers so I want at least 12. The riders will be armed with the Slaaneshi Champions spear/lance thingy. The mounts will be fitted with modeling chain bridles and reigns. No saddles though as these girls ride'em bare back. The shields from the Champions will be going to my "Slayers" which will be up-scaled plastic daemonettes counting as bloodletters. I figure I have to represent their T4 somehow.

Say anybody need 12 odd Slaanesh Champions, sans weapons and mounts?

The mini-keeper is quite nice already, you've done a wonderful job on her. I think the legs are my favorite bit - anatomically solid but also demonically thin and extra jointed. Same goes for the legs on the seeker mount. Oh, and I support boobs in pairs

There's loads of potential in this project, you can be sure I'll be watching

Lookin good so far, that is an excellent couple of sculpts goin on there, especially the steeds, looks exactly like the originals.
Tbf the previous slaaneshi stuff was better (yes, I know they were all scantily clad) but the new plastics are ugly-looking (which for the chaos god of pleasure and lust I can see being a disadvantage), it's just a shame they retired the old steeds (the lizard/snake things were wicked), plus the six-breasted thing was kinda cool. Imagine making love to a woman with six breasts?

Okay here are a few of my Gluttons IE. count as plague bearers:

I actually have 12 of these converted now, but I flubbed the pics of the others. biggrin.gif

Anyway what I did here was take a basic Ogre model and cut off the legs at the crotch, and sculpted new bare legs, while adding some additional height to make them more imposing compared to all those true-scaled marines running around these days. I also filled in and sculpted a bare belly, as well and carving in a butt crack. laugh.gif

So sculpted these two basic models so I could make casts of the bodies. As you can see the arms looked stumpy, so I late cut through the biceps and extended them with some copper wire and good old Aves Sculpt. The head are simply modded and not casts. Basically I shaved off the stone earrings, and ugly hair, beards, etc; and sculpted on some spiky bits and horns. The cast were later cut up and pined in more dynamic poses. Here are the casts:

I like the idea for the gluttons a good bit, though I would point out the bases are too large for count as plague bearers. I doubt many people would complain because they are so good looking, but technically they need to be on a 25mm base to be legal.

All in all, that is a great use of the ogres

Boss_Pimpalotz: Thank you.

Boss_Salvage: Thank you. I spent quite a long time getting thoughs legs right, and I'm still only semi-happy with them.

Beamo: The base model for the seeker took maybe 2-3 hours. I won't be sculpting each one individually though. I'll be employing the dark arts to cast off 14 or so.

Smiling Assasin: Thanks for your intrest. I'll be posting up some concept drawings for the army soon.

Malfred: Yes...chaos can be icky. I'm going for sexy but disturbing.

Leigen_Zero: Yep love the Diaz nettes were sweet, but the new ones are very nice as well and cheap...they just need a few...uhm...cosmetic alterations.

ChaoticFlanagan: Thanks buddy.

Wehrkind: Hmmm...hadn't thought about the base issue. I have some 25mm and 30mm bases, I could use. Is it legal to have material, like say styrene sheet overhang the base a bit?

yeah,
It's legal to have material overhang the base.

You should stick to the original base sizes as closely as possible, being a all Deep Striking army having larger bases makes your units more likely to scatter onto something!

Armor Concept Designs for the Daemon Princesses:

Okay, I spent some time trying to figure out what sort of armor would look best. While I don't want them to be completely covered up, I do want to plausibly represent the "Iron Hide" upgrade. These are heavily influenced by "Liber Chaotic" by the way.

Let me know what you all think!

Wow, looking really good! I really really like the work you've put into the Seekers/Pleasureseekers. The comparison with the standard pose (legs stright out, straddling the mount) looks so horrid compared to the converted (and old) ones. The Mini-keepers/princesses are solidly worked.

What are the "procreate" feathers? Are they commercially available modeling bits? I'm looking for a bunch for my native-american themed marines and my GS skills aren't great at making them.

Not so sure about the Gluttons, it's a nice concept but the Ogres are too big, and still look too much like ogres, not daemons. Maybe some more mouths, like on their bellies? That would emphasize that they're only there to eat.

Keeper of Secrets:

Here's my Forge World KOS and the inspiration behind this army; and oh how I love her....

She will be getting considerable attention and modifications. She's all pinned, gap filled, sanded and ready to go so...

Anyway, I have planned the following conversions so far:

1. I'll be replacing all of the spikes on the leggings and glove with GS rivets/studs, just like the leggings of the Diaz damonettes and the steeds. I hate spiky bits! Chaos should be much more than that.

2. The breast plate will be aged gold and platnium, with the spikes on the breastplate replaced with miniture plastic gems.

3. Sculpting a branded Slaanesh symbol on the left inner thigh.

4. Sanding off the eyes on the accessory breasts and replacing them with actual nipples. I get the joke but the concept is just silly. These may or may not be pierced.

5. The resin chains including the necklace will all be replaced with modeling chain and metal foil. The Slaanesh symbol will probably be photo-etched. I got a small machine from micro mark, but haven't had time to play with it yet. I got it for my military and ship modeling, but will be following FW lead on this and future minature projects.

6. The up raise hand will be replace with a custom hand grasping a barbed whip.

7. Her sword blade had a large bubble flaw in her casting, so that will be replace with a heavier styrene and brass rod staff bearing Slaaneshes symbol from "Slave to Darkness".

8. Finally, a pierced tounge.

Yet more Daemons!

This guy will serve as a second Keeper or "Count as Skarbrand". In either case he shall be based on this:

Comments and critiques as usual are greatly appreciated. Let me know what you think!

gennadius: Thanks bro, this time I'll actually get this army done.

gameandwatch: I probably will, I have 2-4 3" tall heralds to sculpt, and they'll need costumes as well. I'll do some more sketches.

tzeentchling: Yeah pain in the that it will be I'm going to have sculpt some more scratch sitting poses, to at least mix in with the stradle legged poses. I suposse I could just sculpt the bodies cast them and outfit with daemonettes heads, arms and feet.

"Procreate" is a epoxy putty similar to GS. I can post up a tutorial on how I did the feathers its really easy. I would probably take you an hour to sculpt all the feathers you could ever need for your army.

On the gluttons I'll admit they are a little over the top as I "biggerized" them as well. But having said that the Plaguebearer art in the Daemon Codex is just as beefy. In fact the way they look in the dex almost made me go Nurgle.

As for them not being daemonic enough I had in mind the Genie from Disney's Aladin sans the paracute pants ofcourse. I plan to paint them pastel blue, with realistically bloody maws and hands. Hmmm...maybe some tentacles....

YES! This alone is an excellent move, though the de-spiking is a nice move and the pierced tongue seems just plain called for

Great armor sketches too, though I suppose the first one seems the most "3+ save" of them all. Nice arm / leg armor on #2 too.

Gluttons are quite cool! Pity about 40k anal basing in 5th edition, though I have to agree that a unit that is deepstriking all the time does depend a bit on the base size than others ... Still cool!

What fantastic work! I love the gluttons, they might possibly be the best slaanesh concept I've seen.

I love what you're doing with the others though, I think so many people miss the point of slaanesh which is a shame. It should be sexy but perverted, just like the excerpt in one of the HH books where half the crowd are trying to screw each other, the other half are slaughtering them.

Watching with great interest.

Okay, I've been making steady progress with the Damon Princess, the body, wings and alternate arms are all done. I'm still working on the head designs but have roughed out the basic head. I'll be casting it and moding the heads, hopefully I'll get the design sketches posted up tonight. I've also made progress on the FW Keeper conversion the leggings are done as are the new breasts and weapons. I'm still working on the new left hand and whip. Still progress has been made.

Boss_Salvage: I will be posting updated armor designs tonight. I like #1 to much not to use it. So I just need to decide on the other two girls. Updated pic on the FW Keeper tonight as well.

_Si_: Thanks the Glutton name and concept is mine but the Idea of Slaaneshi Ogre conversion has been done before. I just have taken the idea a bit further.

Proiteus: Yeah, they are big but if you look at the Plaguebearers artwork in the codex on p.15, they're huge! Easily 2-3 heads taller than a Guardsmen. Which if you think about is they should be marine sized at least, big slow and lumbering, thery're not zombies afterall.

Xedric: The tutorial will be coming soon, I've set up a blog to where I'll post that and some detailed casting tutorials as well.

Anyway will be posting updated tonight...

Excellent work! I'l be following this with interest.

As for discussions on casting. It has been done before on dakka, and mods have okeyed the posting of casting tutorials. Casting is legal, copyright infringement is not, but since you undoubtedly add "considerale artistic input" to whatever you cast you should be fine. (your local laws might vary a bit...) So yes, I'm looking forward a lot to your tutorials, both on casting and on wingcrafting.

Alright updates...at last...

Okay, here's a turn-a-round of the near final conversion on my FW Keeper of Secrets. And here's a couple of close ups. The eyes on the extra breasts were sanded off and they been resculpted in Aves Fixit, and topped off with Green stuff nipples. The nipples and studs were basically stamped out small blobs of GS putty using these.

What are they you ask, well they're "blunt tipped injection needles". You can used these for all kinds of detailing on minatures, rivets, eyes, embossed designs etc. I got this excellent tip from: http://jamesvanschaik.blogspot.com/search?q=rivets. It is a great site with lots of tutorials and videos! Also here a super cheap online site where you can buy similar blunt tipped needles http://www.zeph.com/applicator_tips.htm for about $0.50 each. Do what I did get the variety pack, you get two of each of the 15 different gauge sizes, for $19.95!

Daemon Princess Casting Walktrough:

I've gotten the Daemon Princess done up to the point of casting. So, I'm going to put up a walk through of the final stages ; and then I'll circle back to some sculpting tutorials and tips.

Here I'm doing some final cleanup on the model using some 3M fine sanding pads. This mini was sculpted Aves Sculpt and Procreate putty, both of which take sanding very well. Also the final polishing of the surface done with Acetone and a medium hard toothbrush, this gives an almost glassy smooth surface.

All this time consuming sanding is necessary because silicon casting rubber picks up everything: fingerprints, stray hairs, nicks, scratches.... Well you get the picture.

And here she is all smooth as silk...er...anyway. I have the model under a lamp to bake solid the Aves I used to fill in the holes that I used to pin the arms and wings to it. If silicon was to fill those deep holes the model would be locked into the mold. Seriously, having done the above before fill in any holes or voids, prior to molding.

Okay, sprues...

If you’re going to cast you have to provide proper ventilation. When you pour resin into your mold the air inside is forced out; well most of it. Usually, air that gets trapped inside the mold where it can cause voids and miss-cast parts. So, we have to add vents to the model. These can either be setup before the rubber is poured or cut in afterward. I usually cut vent holes in afterward (a tutorial for another time). For this model I'm pre-planning the sprues using styrene rods brass rods, styrene sheet, and a hot glue-gun.

A couple of quick points, the white tab at the bottom in two pieces of 2.0 mm styrene sheet glued together. It’s important because it serves as both a large fill hole and vent. It along with the brass rods create a void space for any trapped air bubbles to go. I use styrene rod of various diameters, to create vents. Simply cut them to size, and use a light to heat them so you can bend to make complex shapes. You can use aluminum wire but honestly, styrene is both cheaper and easier to handle especially at this size. You can also use hardened hot glue to create connecting vents between smaller parts. I'll use hot glue when we get to the setting up the sprues for the wings; where there are lots of places to trap air particularly in the longer feathers.

We'll get to mold box, but first I want to post the final sculpt for my Seeker mounts. This is as far as I itend to take it before I cast it.
I'll then detail the casts and reposition them into alternate poses.

Here's the test model for my Furies. Yeah they suck, but they fit with the theme. I'll probably just use them in higher point games or in Apocalypse. I freely admit that I stole the idea of using hero-clix Hawkman wings from a member of the very board! But then art is 99% "borrowing" other peoples good ideas... Not to worry though I have three different wing variants and will repose all 12 models.

Here's also a shot of some daemonettes, all 80 will recieves some kind of conversion....madness I know.

I was flipping through my WHF Role-playing game books today and saw this. I'm thinking Slaaneshi Soulgrinder?

What say you all?

I also need some color scheme ideas. All I've got so far are I want the Gluttons to be pastel blue, like the Genie from Aladdin. Covered in splatted blood ofcourse. So, hit me up with your idea, all thoughts are welcome.

Basing:

At the moment I have several conflicting ideas:

Seven Deadly Sins:

one is themed bases representing the 7 rings of Slaanesh realm that represent the Seven Deadly sins. The army already represents the this in its units: ie. Gluttons for Gluttony, Slayers for Anger, Daemonettes for Lust, the Keeper for Pride, etc. Greed could be represented by a blinged up Soul grinder and the other two should be to hard to get in there either.

Fall of the Eldar:

The other idea was to use Eldar ruins or the Webway to theme the bases. This one appeals to me because honestly their just isn't enough Eldar representation in my area, and I just love the background. I wouldn't have dead Eldar strewn everywhere though as I think having dead units on bases is tacky.

Warpgate:

This is based on a statue sculpted by Frederick Hart call "EX-Nilo" (From Nothing). The base would be swirling gates with writhing daemonic body and part rising up from the base. The Keeper might have an arched portal behind that its stepping through.

Imperial Cathedral:

Basically, the bases would represent a daemonic incursion of a Ministronium Basilica. I could use chopped bits of the Basilica model.

I my head they all look great, so I'm asking for opinions.

* Here's a pic of Ex-Nilo for reference.

I'll vote against the Imperial Cathedral, mostly because it seems the least imaginative of the alternatives. I think the Eldar ruins could be stunningly beautiful and complement the models.

The seven sins could be very colourful and leave a lot of room for extravagant creativity, but with a risk of loosing the unified look of an army. Balancing those two is of course a challenge worthy of your skills.

I second Mellon, the Imperial cathedral ruins would be too easy for your talent! Plus its such a generic theme, these models deserve something a little more unique.

I'm split between the Fallen Eldar and Seven Deadly Sins themes, you could combine them as I assume that the nature of the Eldars fall did mimic the seven sins. I really admire the Eldar theme due to the basis in the background, and that this is the first I've seen of it being put into use in a modeling sense.

I really like your work, the FW KOS conversion is very nice as are the others. My only foible is with the size of the breasts, a little too big IMO, but its purely personal taste!

I can't wait to see these models painted, Keep up the inspiring work!

I'm no mold expert but I have done some. Always interested to learn more though. I have a couple of questions.

So I'm guessing you are going to slice the molds open with a razor to remove your masters? I'm not skilled enough to do this and keep a pristine parting line. How do you plan to keep the halves aligned when it comes time to cast?

Some of your risers from the "deep" part of the mold also intersect the mold higher up (some of your wings for example). Doesn't this allow casting material into your riser on the top side and potentially block bubbles from the deep end where you want them removed?

Beamo: Procreate comes in rectangular foil wrapped bars each about 3-inches long. If you by this stuff keep it in the freezer if it get to warm it will stike to the foil and be hard to cut up.

Delfabs: Thanks, I still have a bit more work to do on her.
Levi: Thanks man.

Karoline Dianne:
Thanks! I'd still like to see your army though, I certain its gorgeous as well.

Gennadius: That sir is a brilliant idea! Shattered and fused soul stone strew about, daemonettes holding aloft freshly plucked gems. Hmmm... I don;t like dead bodies on bases by perhaps some crack or long abandoned eldar armor?

Mellon: Those are good points, especially about keeping a unified theme for the army. I'm strongly leaning toward the Eldar Fall idea...crumbling eldar ruins. I was thinking about making at least one daemon princess based of a fallen Eldar Seer anyway. Time to get writing some fluff.

Unite All Action: I'm glad you find this thread inspiring; I know so many hear and elsewehe and here have and continue to inspire and humble me. We'll be getting pretty deep into the casting thing, it really can be simple and relatively cheap to do!

Mohaniker: Well I do know of at least two armies using or planning to use the 7 deadly sins theme. Okay you've sold me, Fallen Eldar it is. I want it to be be unique and challenging and this should be I'm just torn on whether to do a Craftworld interior or a Maiden World setting.

Apone: Thanks!

Accolade: Thanks for the feedback. I'm posting my methods in the hope that it will save someone else from making the same costly mistakes I did. As they say its easy when you no how. So, please if you have any questions post them I'll do my best to answer them.

Namegoshere: Thanks, the gluttons are supposed to be ugly, it helps balance the more elegant daemonettes and princesses.

Boss_Salvage: It always amazes me how GW decied to go with the single breast, they would sell so many more if not for that. I love the new Daemonettes except for that and molded loincloths which make converting a pain..

Pcon426: Thanks man.

The Lost Hobbit: Yeah I suppose your right the Ex-nilo style bases would be to busy. I might still do it as a terrain piece though.

Druidic: I you have questions just ask I'll be happy to explain my process. You don't need all that gear but honestly is saves loads of time and effort. The single pour mold with the jewelers cut is far superior to the two part mold in my humble opinion. It simple to do, takes half the time and the parts come out with virtually no flash! not to worry I'll be demo how to do it soon.

Gamesandwatch: It seems "Eldar Fall" is the winner. I'll have to study my Eldar Codei as reference.

Asmith:
So I'm guessing you are going to slice the molds open with a razor to remove your masters? I'm not skilled enough to do this and keep a pristine parting line. How do you plan to keep the halves aligned when it comes time to cast?

I use a "worm key" and the jeweler cut technique on my molds. It provide lots of registration to align the mold halves together, the cuts are not uniform but a wave pattern. To keep the halves aligned just sandwich them between to pieces of foam core or styrene and rubberband them together.

Some of your risers from the "deep" part of the mold also intersect the mold higher up (some of your wings for example). Doesn't this allow casting material into your riser on the top side and potentially block bubbles from the deep end where you want them removed?

That is a good question. If I was just pouring resin I would only allow the riser to have a single point of contact. When, I've pressue cast the molds like this in the past I haven't had a problem, it probably helps that I inject the resin as well. But you've talked me into changing my venting scheme, these are going to be large models and I dare not waste resin it I can help it. Thanks for the input.

Ozymandias: Thanks.

Okay guys I'll be uploading some new design sketches for nearly all the units as well and some pose ideas. I also hope to get lots of casting done this weekend and to start a proper sculpting tutorial on my new Male KOS. More soon...

Progress!

cutting the Molds:

I'll be getting deep into this later as I've draw up diagrams and everything.

The tools:

A scalpel a #12 curved blade. Buy a box or two of non-sterile carbon blades they're much cheaper. The curved blade will make this technique super-easy and virtually fool proof.

Surgical retractors, got these new off ebay for $20, the name brand one can run as high as $200 or more!

Cutting stuff!

Here's a neat idea to held with the cutting. Push extra long stick pins thru the mold box until the graze the models surface. Make sure you take each pin with a dab of hot glue to that 1. they don't move, and 2. so silicon rubber doesn't leak out the mold box.

The Original cut out of the mold:

The mold:

The Pressure Pot:

A close up on eht lid of my heavily modded pressure pot. I'll explain this bad boy in detail later; but it started life as a $39.00 Harbor Freight paint pot.

Nenya97:

Hmmm...Furies are pretty worthless anyway, I was only adding them for modeling and fluff sake. If they'fe in the list just for the models then they ought to be hot winged daemon chicks, I say.

JD21290:

I'll have to look into selling a few casts, I only need three, but it'd be a shame to just let the molds sit idle. Honestly, I never thought anyone would be interested in buying one. I have to get the heads and alternate arms done first anyway. But if anyone is interested PM me and let me know.

Small one part molds huh? I can run through some info on that. I started out with a hand kneaded silicon rubber that you can get and Michaels and Hobby Lobby on the cheap. You can get very good results from it but you really need to cut the mold for the best results.

Okay I've got several small piles of wings, and 3 freshly minted daemon princesses. I also have my steeds and seeker mounts ready. So their will be many posts this weekend.

Anyway here are some design sketches:

For one of the Princesses:

I'm no going for them to be Chaos based. I want them to be more Eldar-ish. One might even be a corrupted Eldar Farseer, or Dark Eldar Lord for instance.

Here is the head that I finally decided on, it similar to the FW Keeper but different enough to be unique, I think. Any I want all of them to have unique heads. Maybe something in a long and cone shaped head???

Here is a possible armor idea. With, Slaanesh is all about the tounges afterall.

Here is a possible soul grinder upper torso.

The idea I had here is that sharks seem Slaaneshi; long, sleek, fast, and vicious. So the clamps that would hold the daemons torso to the mechanical body would be biting shark heads biting down into the legs and crotch... To sick? To tame? Let me know.

Now about those Soul Grinders mechanical parts, I've been holding off buying them because they're kinda ugly and generic looking. Since this army is now more Eldar-ish than Imperal I'm thinking about just scratch building one base on the Eldar design, i.e. long and slender legs, and smooth flowing curves. So, if their are any Eldar players following this thread I'd love some input please.

Further:

Any thoughts on having daemonettes leading around chained gluttons on chains with Hannibal Lector style muzzles?

More Later!

I think the shark idea is wonderful. It does fit perfectly. Too often I see Slaanesh players focusing on the sex bit and not on the sleek, fast and sensual sides.

This is an incredible thread, I have to echo others' comments that it's very inspiring. I want to sculpt a Slaaneshi Daemon prince/alternate Keeper of Secrets when I'm done with my current projects, and your Princesses are making me want to push my "main" army onto the back burner.

I do have to ask, why did you choose to cast single-piece moulds and then cut rather than using dummy moulds and casting in halves? You'd gain the advantage of being able to have mould keys, as well as not needing to cut perfectly down the middle of incredibly fine parts like the wings (which I know I'd screw up if I tried...). Admittedly, as someone without a pressure pot to cast in, I've ended up getting very stuck in my Japanese-style ways for casting.

There are several compelling reasons use single piece molds:

1. Its fast as you don't have to mix and pour the silicon rubber twice. If the rubber you use take 24 hours to cure as most of the quality stuff does, then a cut mold will save you a whole day.

2. A cut mold has far better registration, that is to say far, far more keys than a two part mold. When you cut the mold you don't simply cut a straight line down to the model; you cut down in layers and zig-zag the blade back and forth slightly. Done right when you put the mold back together it locks tight; you should even be able to tell its cut! If you want even more registration you can include a worm key.

3. A cut mold is far more accurate that a two part mold. When you build a clay wall you introduce errors to you cast. The clay bed is never completely smooth and so the to half never fit together precisely. Which is why two-part molds often have lots of flash on their casts. With a cut mold it goes back together so well, the first several or so cast have no flash, and on the later ones the flash is so fine you can blow it off.

4. Cutting is incredibly easy. Mind you the wings you see here were more difficult to cut than most models would be with this technique. You just start cutting at the sprues and follow the model. If you use retractors like I do its very easy to see where to cut, and perfect accuracy is not necessary anyway. With many models you might not even need to cut the mold completely in half to get the master out. If you can do that you'll get an even better reproduction.

I hope this helps.

Oh yeah, several people have asked what a worm key is.

A worm key is cut with a special curved blade you can by them special made like this (they're quite expensive by the way):

Or you can simply make your own from an x-acto or scalpel blade by heating it and bending it around a brass rod, fixed in a vise like this (cheap!):

You only use it to make your outer most cuts, like so:

After you make your worm cut you just do a zig-zag cut down until you reach the model.

Daemon Princess New Stuff!

Here are some shot of the fully assembled princess model. Its resin tinted gray...ooohhh. Since I don't want 3 identical models I'm currently hacking apart two of them to repose. They will also be separated by their armor, weapons, number of arms, number of breasts, and heads.

Okay here is my first altered pose.

Just a few words on techniques and materials. The best way to chop up plastic or resin minatures is to use a straight edge razor. You can get a box of a 100 for a $1-2. Just go to the paint section of Walmart a buy a holder, again it cost like $2. You can get beautifully clean guilotine-like cuts, that you could never get with an x-acto knife; without the hazardous resin dust that results from sawing. I prefer to use copper wire to pin as its strong and still flexible, again Walmart for under a dollar for 26ft. My putty of choice is Aves either classic Aves Sculpt or Fixit Sculpt tinted with Paine's Grey oil paint to taste. It's can do anything that green stuff or milliput can, and it far cheaper.

In case your wondering the fin on the back was from a quick mold off the steed of Slaneesh.

Let me know me what how you like the pose. The right arm will be holding a sword or whip, not sure on that really.

Daemon Princess Updates:

I've got the second daemon princess' weapon figured out. The spear point is from the Dark Elf Range in fantasy, the Slaanesh symbol on the ended is a daemonette icon with the skull drilled out, The rope is twisted 26 gauge brass wire. the banner was cut from a heavy metal foil taken from tea-light candles.

You can find them at Walmart in the candle section.

The wings are pinned on (i may or may not switch to magnets); but will be removable in case I'm low on point and run them without wings.

I really like this pose and may create new molds in case I decide to a few.

I decided to mount Pegasus wings on them. I justify them with the fact that they have hit and run, and that the wings fit the theme I seem to have going. I'm currently working on the riders, who will be equipped with dark elf lances, and shields based of the . the mounts will sport bridles fashioned out of modeling chain.

Okay, Ive got some ideas that i need to feedback on:

Bases:

I decided some post back to go with a basing theme centered around the fall of the Eldar. I'm thinking of doing something based on this image:

Since I think that having dead Eldar lying around would be tacky, how about some topple and shattered Eldar statures and spires? Maybe some thing similar to this:

I'd use actual Eldar runic script of course. I could sculpt the statues cast them in plaster and then break them up. Or just buy some bit and paint them like marble. It could look kind of like ancient ruins of a Craftworld, still echoing with the horrors of the "Fall".

Poses:

I am still trying to decide on poses for the daemon other two daemon princesses, so i dug into my anime garage kit sites for these:

Soulgrinders:

After much thought I've decided to just scratch-build and sculpt these. For what I want to do with them there is no real point in modifying a existing model. I'd be making so many changes that it would waste time rather than save it. If someone could provide rough figures on the lengtha and width of the mechanical body, that would be most helpful.

Seekers:

I've been waiting for more resin to come in from smooth-on. If should arrive today so you can expect ridiculous amounts of seeker to be posted up.

Later!

Absolutely stunning and inpsirational work. Truly Outstanding. Thanks for sharing and the tutorials.

Good choice on eldar fall bases. Id go with broken statues crumbling ruins. Its epic and classy.

As for poses, I like the first girl in purple. I know its the more difficult pose but I dont doubt youll pull it off. That pose hints at something of violence and sensual. Come close to me and see what happens...

Some how I shouldn't be surprised that some Ikki tousen figs showed up here, but I like the last two poses myself.

I think arm-blading one of the princess would give some nice separation between them as they're mostly longer swords and spears, it'd give her a bit more brutal look which'd be a nice off set.

I've been meaning to post these up for about a week now. I got caught up on a comission, oh and converting 80 or so daemonettes into new posed and equiping them with alternate weapons. Ah well....

So, here is Daemon Princess #2. I've working on the fluff for the army, but I haven't named the individual daemons yet. For the Pose I went with a more dynamic pose that the Anime one I was considering before.

She's still far from done.

Things to do:[u/]

1. Sculpt second set of arms.
2. Finish her head
3. Start working on her armor
4. Sculpt the extra breasts
5. Sculpt the loin cloth
6. Add the chains

[u]
There still some additional kit to go on this one:

1. Sculpt the breasts on the rider.
2. GS sculpt a flowing loin cloth.
3. Add a flowing sash using heavy foil.
4. Clean up some mold lines.
5. ???
6. Profit!

These were pretty straight forward to do, but turned out rather nice. I bits ordered a bunch of WHF Dark Elf weapons and arms; they work great with very little in the way of modification required. Here's a couple group shots:

Fury #1

The whip that this girlie is carrying is just some twisted 26 gauge brass wire for the whip, and 0.1 mm brass rod for the handle.

Fury #2

This fury has a Dark Elf horn, which is far more effective look wise that the monstrosity that the box comes with. The regular damonette instruments I cut the ends off them and use them as heads for my Emperor's Children, instead.

Well I just recieved my new 72 pot Vallejo Game Color set, and the GW wash set yesterday. So, I plan to get a few test minis done by the weekend, after I figure out the color schemes for the various units I prime and base coat them with an air brush.

As far as how much more needs to be done for the army, well....:

Daemon Princesses:

1. Finish sculpting the basic head
2. Sculpt the Brown stuff armor.

These will be done this week for sure!

Gluttons:

Done!

Daemonettes:

Done!

FW Keeper of Secrets:

Done!

Furies:

Done!

Slayers: "Count as Bloodletters"

I haven't started yet but honestly the conversion is very straight forward. I'll finish these up this week.

1. Cut the limbs and use styrene inserts to upscale them.
2. Swap out their claws with Darl Elf weapons

Seekers:

1. I just need to build the mold, and cast them.
2. The riders need minor conversion work, weapon swaps mostly.

Pleasureseekers:

These need a bit of work, mostly on the riders.

Soulgrinders:

These are going to be scratchbuilt, so lots of work remains. I just finished drawing up the templates for the mechanical parts in Adobe Illustrator. So, I should be getting started on those this weekend. I haven't started sculpting the jiggly daemonic bits yet.

KOS "Counts as Skarbad":

No progress. I could probably get him done in a day, I just need to make the time.

So, the vast majority is ready for painting, but we still have a way to go.

The pose more refined:

Both of the upper arms are pull back and will be holding swords, angled outward from the body.

So...cool, Not cool, bleeping slowed? This princess will have optional wings as well, I''' just heat the tips in hot water and bend them out outward as though they're resting on the ground. Pics on that later....

For a super-dynamic low pose, I might have put one of the upper hands on the ground, the other arm fully back, with the claws pulled back. This would require more of a torso twist and a knee on the ground, something very different from what you've sculpted. It would be tightly-coiled and explosive.

Sersi's Slaaneshi Themed Daemon Army @ 2009/06/12 18:40:32

Post by: gameandwatch

I have to say Sersi, Im not convinced with the arm positions on the new FDP, it is all to cramped together and though those arms work well for the others, this whole model is so drastically different from the others that maybe its time to sculpt brand new arms just for this girl. Like one arm cocked back, the other crossing the chest, as if she is about to deal a lethal blow with the cocked back arm...

Topographic Oceans:
Thanks, I was going for a heavy landing, maybe perched on a high-ish base looking down.

JohnHwangDD:

I considered a pose with the hand on the ground but thought it was to close to the crouching Princess with the spear. I might not not be getting my idea across to well. The pose is supposed to look like she just complete a double sword slach attack, with the blades ending up behind her...I might need to re-think that. Thanks for the imput.

Gameandwatch:

I really appriciated the hard crit. I've been trying to get this to work on and off and the hand just aren't right and the left leg isn't convincing. I'll work on combing your and JohnHwangDD ideas. Okay, as promised here are the group shots of the Pleasureseekers:

I fully admit to cheating on these riders. You'll notice that the leg and bodies of the riders are an off white color compared to the GW bits. I converted two models and cast them legs of one and the body of the other. These aren't quite done yet...

Things yet to do:

1. I'll need to dip their legs in hot water so I can position the legs to more closely for the side of the steed.

2. I need to GS some flowing loincloths on them similar to the old mounted daemonettes but longer and more dynamic.

3. I still have to assemble the last three, but they';ll be done today.

No saddles for these girls, bare back all the way.

Started work on the princesses armor yesterday, so I'll be posting that later but first: my last three pleasureseekers.

and...

also...

Since, I have a few extra cast of crouching daemonettes mounted one on the base of my Glutton Champion. It also occurred to me last night that since the gluttons are on a 40 mm base and freaking huge; I could use them as "counts as" Bloodcrushers! 12 bloodcrushers in a single unit would definitely draw fire off my girls, far more that some plague bearers....hmmm...

Anyway I like the idea of having a few tiny by comparison daemonettes on the Glutton bases. Maybe one riding on a gluttons shoulders and pointing at the enemy, or chicken fighting.

Post by: Sersi

So I'm into the home stretch on the Daemon Princess models, and well into sculpting armor and detailing the figures. Before I show picture of that work I wanted to show some work I've done on them to get them ready for possible production.

Before casting these for sale I wanted to get them super clean, and get them ready for new production molds. The first thing to do then was to design a easy way to assemble the models together without the need to pin anything. Just some super-glue or 5-minute epoxy and your done. I ended up using square brass tubes cut and fit to act as plugs/and sockets. These are strong and have the added bonus of not allowing the parts to rotate out of position, like round pins do. Once the parts are cast the actual plugs and sockets will be resin, of course but the effect is the same.

So I started out by carefully boring out the parts, starting with smaller drill bits and working up to the appropriate sized hole. I also drew guidelines on the model to ensure that everything lined up after the tubes and putty had set.

Here is the socket set into the hips.

And here is the tube system in place.

Here the sockets in action. this should make casting easier since the pose is so much more dynamic that the original sculpt. I'll be adding either a belt of a sash to mask the join when assembled. You could also just saw off the plug and install magnets instead.

I also created a similar plug/socket system for the arms and wings:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Okay so here's where I am on the running princesses' armor/clothing...

I went with the studded stockings that the old metal school daemonettes used to wear; the arm length glove on the opposite side will have similar studs and flesh hooks. I used Aves to sculpt the clothing and straps and brown stuff putty for the studs. Rolling the Aves out flat with some talc was a new technique for me, as I'd didn't expect it to stick very well to the model afterward. But a light brushing of alcohol and it stuck on just fine. In fact the talc-ed putty was far more controllable that the brown stuff was.

I just need for go back and add some additional rolls of putty to make the wrinkles, around the joints and stress points.
she needs some additional studs as well.

Here's the crouching princesses' armor/clothing...

Lower body armor first:

I decided to go with pleated armor on the legds, shins and hips. She'll also have armored shoulder pads. I used brown stuff putty for this to try it out. I can see that I won't be using it much in the future as Aves can do anything it can; drying harder and smoothing easiers
I started on the upper body armor with Aves instead.

I also added some copper ringlets and chains to decorate the claws.

Gameandwatch:

So it's been written, so shall it be!

Topographic Oceans:

On paint I ordered some new fine tips for my airbrush, so when the time comes: priming, base coating, and perhaps even some shading should go quickly. In any casae I'm sure you'll all tell me if I'm screwing them up.

Looking fantastic sersi, the only crit I will make is that I see piercings as a much understated use of slaaneshi demons, as well as tatoos, instead of armoring one demon princess' torso maybe you could like tatoo a shoulder, and add subtle piercings to the face... just some thoughts!!

Still working on the armor & clothing such as it is

Princess #1

Close ups on princess #2. It the top of her arm length glove, the copper ring and pierced flesh still needs to be added as well as the Brown stuff studs.

So whats next for Princess #1.

Well, I'll be leaving the shoulders abdomen and back clear for tattoos and carved in Slaaneshi characters. I also will be redoing the loincloth as its to short and to wide for my tastes. I'm also considering adding some piercing and chains to the wings.

Princess #2

Some closeups of the armor bits on princess #2.

Still a bit rough as they are being built up slowly and sanded carved into shape.

What's next for Princess #2:

Her leg and shoulder armor will attached to her skin with chains and piercings. Fixing some issues with the anatomy of the shoulders and right upper arm. I also want to make the clavicles and Sterno-mastoid muscle more. prominent. Basically tighten up the anatomy. The holes you see in the crab claw will have copper rings piercing them as well as chains with dangling human skulls. I'm also considering adding some stomach armor and second set of breasts.

Comments and crits would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Beautiful work! Love the poses, love the legs, love the wings... Did I mention I love the legs?

You've managed to make the whole of this army look detailed without looking too busy. Keep that asthetic! As long as you choose a harmonious color scheme, this army cannot fail but be incredible to look at.

Arkion:

Thank you for your comments. Your correct aesthetics and theme were why I wanted to do this army. If nothing else it will be unique.

Okay more armor updates. Were getting close now...

Princess # 1

Added straps to hold the leg armor to her pierced flesh, and clipped straight pin heads to serve as rivets.

I'm not sure about the rivets as they maybe to large. I also still need to add the straps to the left leg. Comments please?

Here's a close up of the shoulder armor, it still need some more sanding and shaping to round it out. I'm thinking about adding two addition segments to make the armor look more flexible. I also added some copper rings piercing to the claw arm they still need to be fixed in place with super glue.

The shoulder armor is loosely based off this design.

I also added a ankle bracelet and snapped chain.

Here's a close up of the back area:

The should armor is also held of with piercings.

Here the how the piercing for the legs and torso look together.

And finally the front of the torso. Here I added a second pair of breasts. The will be a pleated breast plate covering the abdomen and pushing up on the breasts. Basically the concept is this daemonette model scaled up.

Here's the front of the torso so far. The circular plate covering the join in the straps of the shoulder harness will bear a Slaanesh symbol.

and finally a couple of beauty shots:

Okay more armor updates. Were getting close now...

Princess # 2

Allot less work was required to get this girl looking good. Started on the studs for the arm. I still need to workout how the materials attaches at the clawed end. I'll probably use a some kind of rivet, rather than a ring through flesh style piercing. I also adding some additional copper rings to the left claw.

I cleaned up the edges of the arm and leg bracelets seen here:

And here: Also note the belly button piercing. I may change the belly to a finer wire ring.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Princess #3

She's needing the most work but I plan to get her done today. I've again changed the pose base on feedback given here. She in now in a landing pose with one hand flat on the ground supporting. I haven't decided whether or not to bring back the second set of arms yet, and currently she has to humanoid hands rather than claws. the right hand will probably be clutching a sword with a curved blade.

I have no idea how i want to armor this one so suggestions would be appreciated

More later....I'm casting 26 seeker mounts today!

OK, to answer your first question, I think the leg armor on P1 looks great and distinctive compared to the others, the final straps with a ring attached to the flesh is an a great theme for that specific model, you just need to add the flesh to ring portion which of course you know. Otherwise, a brazier type deal, scaling up that demonette will look great, yet another great concept to work from.

P2 is definetly my fav, I just love how the stockings with the sectioning reminds me of harlequins and directly corrolates to the eldar, which is PERFECT for a Slaaneshi army. Too often you see slaanesh models with absolutely nothing relating them to their origins, here you are capturing it nicely.

On P3, cant say how I feel yet, Im thinking maybe long flowing back and front loincloth, you know angled up with the theme of her having just hit the ground, and I thikn maybe then this would be your best oppportunity to really have one just tattooed. Other than that keep it up, I know everyone whos following this is beggin for paint..

Wow, this is an amazing BLOG. I really appreciate that you are sharing it with us, your talent seems to know no bounds .

I am a big fan of your concept art, really really well done, and understandable.

Truly fantastic pieces. It might just be my broken head, but every time I see your running Princesses I think of bowling... Maybe the last one needs a bowling team shirt?

On a more serious note, I think your segmented armour is the wrong way up. On humans, at least, articulated armour like you've got on the ladies' legs will tend to overlap downward like roof tiles. This is on the assumption that most blows would be coming from above (especially on the legs). A blow coming from above on your stuff would catch on the plates, rather than being deflected away. I guess they are somewhat larger than normal people, but I'm not sure of the parallell doesn't still apply.

Anyway, just being pedantic, so feel free to ignore and continue being awesome

Ah see there ya go being logical.... If I'd done it that way it wouldn't have been spiky, and everyone know chaos should be all about the spiky bits... Seriously though thanks for the critique. Oh, and watch this space we aren't done yet!

I would imagine something like this for the leg armor would work quite well on princess number 3:

Baaah....work sucks! I haven't spent as much time on this project as of late. But I do have a few updates.

Keeper of Secrets:

I finished sculpting the hand and whip on the keeper of secrets. I need to re-sculpt the nipples on the breasts as the scale is wrong. I also need to add some more studs to the back of her leg and on her newly sculpted hand & arm.

Thanks Wolf!

I got a few more mods to show off:

Daemon Princess #1

A few detail shots:

Here's the back of the torso armor. It's intended to be some kind of leather, so it will be getting some texturing work

Here you can see the front of the shoulder armors rigging. I still need to add a few buckles and add a Slaanesh symbol to the disc. I'll probably glue a thin piece of styrene tubing to a raise edge to the disc.

Here's a better shot of the shoulder armor. I'll be drilling small holes into the individual plates, and then filling them with small balls of harden putty to make recessed rivets.

In this picture and the next you can see the side of the torso armor. I've drilled small holes along the split between the front and back plates with a pin vise. Later on I'll added the putty laces that hold the armor in place. I may even add a bow!

Her you can see the broken chains, made out of model ship anchor chain, copper wire, and Aves. In a way it mirrors the detail work on the FW KOS.

This arm guard is pretty much done other that scribing in some details, to make it look ornate.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Daemon Princess #2

She is a hair away from being done... She's awaiting her new head and hair, but other than that she just needs a few more brown stuff studs and some scribing work on her are and leg bracelets, and I'll call the sculpting on this one done.

I re-sculpted the nipples larger as it was pointed out the they were out of scale. Hopefully I didn't over compensate to much?

Details on the Loin cloth:

I abandoned doing the loincloth in GS, it was to flexible and didn't hold its shape good enough. Here's the new start of the loincloth in blessed Aves, rolled out with talcum powder.

I then built up the wrinkles and folds with rolls of Aves.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Daemon Princess #3

The idea hear is that she is wearing a leather-like ensemble made of Eldar skins: Including leggings, gloves, bikini bottom and some er... leather strappy things. Anyway I need to add some additional copper rings and straps. She still needs a head of course, and a bit of light sanding.

- I like the sword, but I'm not sure about its length. So, opinions please.

- I plan to extend the leggings at their tops and add some laces crossing the butt.

- I plan on leaving a good amount of flesh exposed for tattoos and such.

- I'll also decorate here with captured spirit stones.

In this shot you can see the mounting holes for her wings. I just need to boil some water, and bend the wings so that they spread out along the ground. I may just sculpt a new set however.

Details shots on DP #3:

A few early shots of the new arm and hand being sculpted.

I know what your thinking where's are the freaking heads, and where's the paint. What a slacker!

The truth is that although I've sculpted and computer modeled many heads in the past, I've never done so at this scale. So I kept putting it off and putting it off. But today will be different! I've decided to sculpt some ten practice heads, before shooting for the finished heads. So, here are some shots of this mornings failed attempt.

A basic skull structure has been built up over a ball of Aves putty.

I used a drill to hollow out the eyes sockets. This was mistake because they were neither deep enough or large enough. So, even at his stage things are already off from good proportions. Always use reference kids, it really helps. I'll use my digital calipers on the next one.

Here, I've glued hardened balls of Ave's putty in place to serve as eyes.

Quite a bit of sculpting has gone on to get to hear. Since this is practice I'll leave it as is. But examining this effort there are some serious problems with the heads basic structure. For example the eye sockets were not large enough or deep enough. So the eyes are out of place and it throws the whole thing off.

The horns are also far to small and need to sweep back and over the head.

This is a perfect example of sculpting what you think you know rather what you see. So I'll be digging out my resin skull to study and reference while working on the other practice heads.

More Later!

Horrors?!!

Okay this is going to need some explaining. I've been trying to come up with a slanneshi replacement model for horrors. At first I was going to use daemonette heads and torsos with sculpted snake bodies. but I already have lots of nettes' and converted nettes. So what to do? How about a winged flaming snake with a seeker mount head.

Here it is to scale with my custom sculpted raptor-thing /seeker mount TM.

Note that is won't look this stiff when done. Since resin becomes pliable with heat. I'll be able to repose them with a simple dunk in hot water. Meanwhile it easier to sculpt and cast it straight.

Just imagine sculpted flames running along it back and a ridiculously over the top coiled pose...with wings! So what do you all think? Too out there? Too stupid? I'm casting to day so you should see results tomorrow.

More Later!

Okay, I got some free time today and will be working on bases. But I've got a couple of questions about basing:

1. what size base is a daemon prince on? The ones I'm using currently 90mm, which I assume is a little big.
2. I've seen people use CD's as bases for Greater Daemons, it it legal?
3. What base size are Flamers on?
4. What base size are Blood Crushers and they round bases? I currently have my Gluttons on 40 mm bases.
5. What base size are Fiends on?
6. I'm scratch-building my soul grinders, what' the approximate footprint for a Grinder? I'm guessing 4"X6".

Post by: Panic

yeah,
I've been following your blog, it's awesome.

1. regular CSM DP is on 40mm, but the nurgle CSM DP is based on 60mm ( I believe )
2. Not really. GD are 60mm based
3. 25mm
4. 60mm
5. square calvalry? but i think you could put them on bikebases to keep the round theme.
6. Grinders can be anything really, with feet pointing straight down it's a tall model but it can fit on a 60mm base.... (this is how people with bendy non glued GS DeepStrike them in! then the stretch legs out to reach combats!) for a scratch build I'd recommend the large oval base for dragons, or if the model is going to be tall like a knight defiler then 60mm seems fair.

The thing to Keep in mind is that with your army being all DS base size is very important, putting bloodcrushers on 40mm bases will most likely raise a few 'modeling for advantage / cheating' eyebrows. Just Ask the Wreaking Crew!

In sculpting and art in general its important to no what your doing. Not necessarily the specific techniques you will use although that can be also be very important. But more specifically what are you trying to make? And do you really know what IT looks like. I'm a character modeler in the gaming industry by trade and we almost always have detailed control art before we even start a new model. When people ask my why something is of I always ask where is your reference? So as you might guess I've made tons of detailed studies and rough sketches for the sculpts for this project before I ever got started. I've shown a few before, but here are some of my drawings from the sketchbook dedicated to this project.

My scanners busted so I just used my cameras to take the pics... Apologies for the image quality.

This one is where I'm going with the crouching princes. Swept back horns and tattoos...classy!

Just trying out some ideas.

Same.

Take note of the eldar-ish head the running princess with be either a corrupted Banshee or Harlequin

A leg study for a Count as Soulgrinder.

Another Soulgrinder concept.

A couple of things on this page: the head with the downswept horns will be going on the crouching princess with the spear. I really need to name theses things. The costume and sextuplets breasts are going on the princess #3...er the kneeling princess with the sword.

Detailing on Princess #1

More detailing on Princess #1

Still more detailing on Princess #1

Details for Princess # 2...er...the running one. Basically eldar-ish symbols to scratch into her arm and leg bands. And Eldar keepsakes, like Farseer spirit stones, etc.

Heads are coming along nicely as is the casting on the wyrms and seeker mounts...

I promised some head progress shots. This is all I have uploaded at the moment, I take some current pic to show later today. The first thing to point out is that these heads are far smaller that the one I posted before. That thing was enormous! These are the correct scale, making the princesses 7 heads tall.

Definitely awesome. The proportions and sense of movement and flow are just excellent.

If I had one complaint, and I feel really silly suggesting this, is that they are not quite androgenous enough. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some daemon women (dated enough at least). I just think that perhaps a bit more of a androgenous bent would make it a little more creepy and daemonic and a little less pin up (a part of me died when I typed "less pin up.")
Just a thought, and I certainly would love it just as much if you completely ignored my suggestion

Just a quick comment sersi, good buddy, for the grinder you could consider having the gun in the belly almost like a pregnant demon birthing goodness to all those within 36". I think it would still keep with the theme, not be too nurgly in any respect if done right(which can easily be done), and may be a seperate very conflicting sidepiece: Pregnant beautiful machine with...OMG, the stomach! What is that! O-o so yeah, just somethin to think about.

Oh this is good....It puts a very specific image in mind...the scene is Species where in a Gieger-esque Sil gives birth. Sprinkle in a bit of the Queen from Aliens... Thanks for the inspiration bud!

I had also considered a grinder with the cannon hung a little lower even...

Disturbing imagery to follow!

Going off of the pregnant soulgrinder idea, you could have "her" cradling the gun belly, like so--

that would be downright creepy, the maternal feeling eminating from something destructive.

Design sketches for Soulgrinder #1:

So...I've been thinking about the Soul Grinder counts as model, and have decided to go with Gameandwatch's and The_Chaplain's excellent ideas, and came up with um....this wonderfully daemonic homage to motherhood.

This is the basic idea the engine was formed from the body of an eldar Farseer. Here's the idea engine is a womb where slaaneshi daemons form. An idea stolen from the Ultramarine Omnibus, where the Iron Warriors used grotesquely deformed women to birth new fully grown space marines! Ewe!

And no the tooth maw is not what your thinking... It didn't even occur to me until my wife pointed it out. Still I think it fits for Slaanesh. Disturbing, no?

While looking through online pictures of pregnant women for research I came across, this:

Apparently, its done with a temporary dye called Henna. The important thing is that is got me thinking a painting and intricate Eldar/Slaaneshi design on the belly.

So, anyway that's one of my Soulgrinder ideas. Things to do:

1. The drawing was done to scale so all I have to do is photo-copy it to use as a guide for my armature.
2. The design is not chaotic enough so I'll need to work on some detailing sketches.
3. Since the sculpture is rather large I'll be using gray super sculpey firm and casting the final model.

I need feedback of the design:

- I've drawn her with 8 arms, but as pointed out six would be better for Slaanesh. Which pair of arms should I remove? The ones on the ground supporting her weight have to remain. While the ones cradling her belly are fundamental to the idea.

- It needs some method of movement legs like a defiler, or perhaps a winged dais, or something?

- I've considered have one set of ares either clutching Slaanesh iconography or having sculpted flames coming from the palms of the hands.

- While the mouth is currently open should she be either blind folded or gagged, S&M style? To much?

- How should I represent the Soulgrinder's weapons?

Please be brutal in your critiques, I can take it.

Hell, why not both? I don't think it would be too much. Honestly if anyone did have anything against a very softcore S&M theme like that they'd probably take issues with the nudity, too, and of course it's already too late to backtrack on that.

Now if you started sculpting giant horse cocks, or tooth-filled vagin-err...

Anyway, I say it should be mounted on some kind of dais, I like the idea of crab legs more than wings, myself. As for weapons I'd prefer something biomechanical-looking, like a Giger painting. Something that's unmistakeably a gun but with alien-looking tubes or spikes and stuff.

Oh, I've been studying my Giger and Brom for ideas. Bio-mechanic weapons seem the way to go. The challenge will be to make is chaotic and alien, yet sexy at the same time. I think your right on the S&M themes, having gone this far there is no good reason to shy away now. It's not like I ever intend to use this particular army at a GW store. By the way you would be surprised by the number of toothed orifices that come up on official GW Slaanesh art. Typically the nipples are replace with mouth, eyes, etc. That said I'll be leaving what below the belt on my daemons to the imagination. Decency...and all that.

First of all, thank you Sersi for the positive comments about my feedback, that's a rare commodity on the interbutts nowadays.

In my opinion, if you want to remove a set of arms- I'd go with the ones that are sticking out to the sides- as they aren't really [i]doing[i] anything. If you still want slaanesh iconography I'd just do "henna" tatoos on the soulgrinders body to get that across.

As for the crab legs... why not a central dais made to look like a reclining chair or even a bed-like deal ala Hedonism Bot from the show Futurama

I think that it could look very good once it's done. BTW, don't go for the ball gag with holes in it look-- screams carry through them, such is not the case with a solid rubber ball. ....Don't ask how I know that though

Revisions yeah!

Okay I got lots of great feedback on this from various boards.

I need to thanks the following people for the input on this model:

Gameandwatch: for the idea of using a pregnant machine/daemon...inspiring!
The_chaplain: for the references he provided for the pose, which I have stolen shamelessly.
HK-47: for suggesting keeping the up raised hands to represent the Harvester.
Deraj: for the idea of shackling the supporting arms.
Khanaris: for the hard critique on the belly mouth looking far to pornographic.
Qui-Gon Jinn: for the hard critique on the soul grinder needing to be machine-like, and far less organic.
Nesbitt_bub1: for the idea of rotating the model 45 degrees, and Gigeresque tubing, and a few others not incorporated here yet.
Sidstyler: for being honest enoguh to say dude that just is wrong.
And everyone who's provided me feedback past, seriously thanks guys.

I'll comment on these more but I gotta get to work. Later!

Alright, so far...awesome!

My problems:
Mainly just the gun barrel coming out of the stomach...more of just the fact that it is protruding from the stomach. I think you might be better off with a slightly indented gaping hole(sae size as the gun barrel) apposed to the gun barrel itself.

Slannesh is all about pleasure...well perverse pleasure upon more and more perversity. To be really twisted, you could think about the hole in the stomach as a 'glory hole' (yikes) at the same time a hole in a pregnant woman's stomach.

This in my opinion simply gives too much away, where as with the other idea its like a poke your finger in and see whats in there idea, Slannesh feeding that common curiosity complex with a nasty suprise!

Oh and thanks for the compliment! Art backround comes in handy on occasion!

PS Last minute thought, I know your goin for the super sexy and all, but if you do go for my 'hole' idea, I suggest slight wrinkling or linear tearing around the hole, as if something had ripped the walls or something.... man this is grosse haha!

Looks good and the idea is nice, but I would make the soulgrinder a little different:

I found this pic from Clive Barker's Action Figure Series "Lost Souls":

Make a female version of it with additional arms and put a Nid-Chaos-Hellcanon-style cannon into the opend belly.

I wouldn't make it too gigeresque, because it would be a break. The whole army looks more angelic-fleshly, so I think, a "Species"-like, bionic machine wouldn't be suitable to the rest.

Gameandwatch:

Oh so you prefer an innie over an outie? At the moment I'm thinking of using mechanical crab legs, as several people have pointed out that its supposed to be a walker...Doh! So she's basicly a giant sized "Penetent Engine". The occupant be preserve in a state of perpetual pain and exstacy. A living monument to the Master/Mistress of Sensation.

Logan:

Thanks for the input, I love the model, its definitly chaotic. But that just ain't sexy!

I really do love how this army is coming together, amazing work Sersi...

Now, about the soul grinder...

I think the pregnant idea is great, and you seem to be doing rather nicely with your designs to far, however I do have a few suggestions.

One being that I think you should keep her eyes visible, or at least refrain from the dome-visor thing you've got there. Covering that much of her face hides a lot that could be used to work with you regarding the details of her expression. You may find it more effective to have the eyes and brow visible to help reinforce the 'it hurts but I'm enjoying it' concept.

Also, the lack of the obligatory Slaanesh 'crab claw' is bugging me just a bit, and I think that if done right, adding one or two of those will really help you here.

After all, this is going to end up as basically a keeper of secrets strapped to a mechanical spider-tank of doom as she's 'giving birth' to chaotic warp energies... right?

lol

Just some suggestions, I'm sure it'll be amazing either way.

Aww, I was joking...but honestly I think what you have now is much better anyway. The revision I mean.

The whole army looks more angelic-fleshly, so I think, a "Species"-like, bionic machine wouldn't be suitable to the rest.

I disagree, in fact I think it's perfect and will fit in well with the rest of the army.

Why? Because that's exactly what the soulgrinder is, machine and flesh combined. None of the other demons in the GW line have mechanical bits on them, the soulgrinder is the only one that does. I dunno, it makes sense to me, and I don't think it would look any more out of place in this army than it would in a standard GW demons army.

Wow, getting lots of amazing feedback here!

The_chaplain:

- Thanks for the offer, I'm sure I'll be PM-ing you sooner than later.

Karoline Dianne:

- Thanks for the reply. My thinking on the head was that the dome over her eyes was a computer/viewer screen showing heretical imagery capable of warping the mind and corrupting the soul. I could be smaller though, and take up less of the face.

- I'll definitely try to work in claws, when I design the legs.

ShotgunFacelift:

- Nasty as in that's sick but I can't stop looking at it? If so that's what I going for. Thanks!

Wolf:

- Thanks. Yeah, the short barrel is intended to be the Maw cannon, although I'll likely change it to and indented design.

Typhus:

- I'll need to study this design but it looks to have allot of potential. But it looks like I could easily remove the legs from the design, and merge everything from the waist down into a mechanical spider body based on this design. I need three Soulgrinders anyway, so its definietely something I'll be taking a closer look at. Thanks!

Sidstyler:

- I figured you were joking, but I still value the input. While, I couldn't be bribed to enter a GW store...and only ever play adults. Its still easy to take Slaaneshi themes to far.

- I'm thinking that the soulgrinder should be a combination of hard metal parts and soft organic flesh. So, in the nest revision I'll try to incorporate that.

So I've been thinking, Yes dangerous I know.

So, anyway. I still need to come up with a way to represent: plaguebearers and nurglings.

Now, Slaves to Darkness mentions the "Tormented" which are kinda these slaaneshi zombie-slave things. That got me thinking about converting grave ghouls and putting them in gimp-suits: leather hoods and loin cloths most likely. Afterall, the Sisters and Inquisition already have "church sanctioned Gimps...excuse me...arco-flagellants. And Slaanesh is not one to be outdone with regard to fetish.

For nurglings. How about daemonic version of the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz / Umpalumpas from Willie Wonka for nurglings? Creepy, no?

I think that would look amazingly horrible and still keep with the army, Im confuse werent you doing the ogres as plagubearers? where they way too big? If they were, you know you dont have to go bloated for plaguebearers, everyone does the bloated thing, what about a plague that does the opposite. like a plague that sucks away your fat to make you sexier...but causes such addiction that it doesnt stop there...and the plaguebearers keep injecting themselves with it to become skinnier and skinnier, like plague driven bolemics(S?). constantly purging, to feel good....yikes....

Now you have me thinking of strung out super-models.

I changed the Gluttons to "counts as Blood Crushers". They were to big to be plaquebearers, and there were issues with them being on larger bases 40-60mm bases. Besides giant fat genies owning space marines is to cool to pass up.

Hey Sersi, Ive been watching this log avidly. everything is incredible, I've probably said as much before

I had a cool idea for the dais, inspired by your first sketch of the SG. what if it was composed of serpents, who rose up behind it like a throne?

something like this, but less static:

That'd actually be a really cool for the soulgrinder. Might even be able to make the snakes tieing her down in a slaneshy bondage sort of way ;p

I think you were really onto something with the original concept you were working on.

My gut instinct is to take the original "stomach gun" sitting deity concept, and place it on a fancy platform. If you are going with the mechanized style (helmet-hair and such) I would continue that by creating a relatively simple "floating/levitating" platform. Simple is quite good, and you can always cover the "hover-board" with fancy patterns to create a nice effect and bonding agent for the models flow.

I am not a huge fan of putting your original idea on spider stilts, it just seems to be over-compensatory for an otherwise very interesting design. It only takes two clashing styles to destroy a nice design, although you could incorporate the spider legs in somehow to back up your prime form with a secondary.

Tomb-spider style would look quite good, dangling stubby legs and a levitating base. Tentacles are my first focus, but remember that a tentacle becomes phallic in more respects than one when directly attached to the hips. I would place them on the edge of the "hover-board" like a classic disc UFO has the landing gear. Three would suffice, and you could even make the rear tentacle modified into an eye stalk of sorts, due to the fact that the face is likely to be blind-folded.

Five tentacles could work, but at this point you might as well be bumping it to six and making them even around the "hover-boards" edges. Four would just look strange, and seven would overwhelm the model.

Ya, saw this on warseer, and hoped you had changed your mind.

Not that there is anything wrong with these concepts... They are just significantly less unique and twisted than the prego-grinder.

Actually, I hate to say it, but other than the cool way each leg set looks (umm... lets just say 'provocative'), the concept is prety boring, and the spider-queen thing a tad overdone.

Not that you havent shown an incredible trend to make everything look insanely, mindblowingly, amazing!

As I understand it soulgrinders are daemon engines, right? So it seems like a daemon fused with a machine is the way to go. How about something along the lines of the penitent engine? Given you amazing sculpting talents, it seems like you ought to show off more styles and get something mechanical in the mix - and they do have an armor value. Forgeworld has done some nice daemon engine stuff recently... Have to admit, I find the prego grinder disturbing. Its odd what will bother one and what won't in miniatures.

"Overdone"? Exactly how many brilliantly-sculpted spider-queen soulgrinder models have you seen? Because I've seen exactly zero.

...what does "sexfully" even mean? Personally I find this comment more disturbing than it is helpful, lol...some people might be getting too into it.

In any case I think some people might be right though, these designs don't seem to incorporate the half-demon, half-machine theme that the soulgrinder should have.

Sersi's Slaaneshi Themed Daemon Army @ 2009/08/09 05:47:22

Post by: gameandwatch

Woa dude, chill out its a joke, if youve paid attention to the thread, Sersi has mentioned many a time how important it is for the models to be conflicting in two important ways:
-Arousing
-disturbing
Therefore it is important, and an obvious theme that sex is key for this cult of slaanesh. Therefore, "jokingly" sexfully means make it sexy, and disturbing. Thats what the whole army is about.

I also agree with having some machine in there, an armor value is an important point, therefore I agree it should have some representation. You are burdoned with the task of finding a harmony between the two and that is no easy task... where does the soul end and the machine begin?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OH! almost forgot, what I meant by the gleeful smile is, I love your first prego concepts with the open mouth and everything, but what if she was smiling with her mouth open,? or is that too twisted?

Post by: Sersi

Oh Yes! The pregnant grinder and her evil little munchkin babies are definitely getting done. I'll likely use the insect-oid legs from the second drawing, for her mechanical base. It shouldn't take much to tech-up the design. The other two grinders will be based of the third grinder concept design. I got lots of good feedback on that one.

I've started on the legs for the two lesser grinders. I'm pretty much scratch building everything. So, I started on the legs first since I need 12 virtually identical legs. Once I get a nice detailed on leg done I'll mold and cast it 6 six times for each model. The main body I'll sculpt out of super sculpey over a ball aluminum foil to save clay.

Updates:

Soul Grinders:

So after talking reading a sugestion by Morthai on Warseer, to remove the spider abdomen from the sexy grinder I had a vision. What if I make it like a Siamese twin type thing with two upper bodies fused together at the waist with six striding legs.

They could be back to back. Or perhaps embracing an with their hands extending past them. I'll have to sketch this up! But man my mind whirling now.

Daemon Princesses:

The DP head ended up being a bit to big but the face wasn't to bad. So I'll be taking a little of the top, the chin and sides. The funny thing is I scaled it correctly, but as I adding putty and carved away it just grew.

Seekers:

Casting on these has proven sucessful! I have like 36 awaiting riders and lances.

Slayers:

I converted all 12 daemonettes into running poses. I still have to cast there "Bliss Giver" swords. I may add horns or stunted wings to these. I'm not sure yet. I need something to make them different and bring them, into the own.

Thanks again for all the comments.

Soulgrinders One pregnant lady on the front, big gun/firing hole on the bellybutton as you drew earlier. Another lady behind her in the 'patrick swayze/demi moore 'Ghost' movie' embrace (conveniently covering rude bits?)

Typhus:

I did do some sketches using legs similar to those. I've since decided to go with more organic looking Soulgrinders. Thanks for posting the pics though.

A couple of other ideas to bounce off you guys:

Horrors:

Daemonettes with an techno-organic blasters. Instead of two crab claws, they would have a gun arm and a humanoid hand. How many of these do I need, anyway? 12?

Changling:

This one was easy to come up with. Racy daemonette in a Commissar cap, and jacket. Yeah...yeah...I know it cliche. But mine will be flashing her

well, instead of the hand cannon deamonettes, I think you should make your horrors gorgons, like medusa scept without the snake hair something like these, where their eyesbeams are their weapons, that or make gorgons flamers, as they are more insta-death than horrors:

This whole thread is amazing. Sersi you have some mad crazy talent! Your creations are brilliant! I can't wait to see your daemon princess fully modeled, and the soul grinders are really exciting. I can't wait to see the pictures!

The soul grinders are so exciting in fact, that hopefully it won't offend you if I "borrow" the pregnant belly idea for my Slannesh/EC defiler...
I'm planning on converting to look a bit more demonic than the out of box-defiler. My concept is to keep it more machine than demon; replacing most of the defiler torso with a more organic torso, and use your idea of the pregnant belly gun. creating something hopefully more giger-esque in appearance.

Amazing stuff, keep up the great work.
Very inspiring!
I'll definitely be checking back often for updates.

Which would be scarier a winged snake breathing magical fire or a hot daemonic chick with blazing eyes? I honestly don't know the answer, but now I MUST make both....

Eygji:

Please feel free to use any idea or designs you see in this thread. They are certainly not all my ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am definitely going to sketch out to see how it looks.

Okay Updates:

Keeper of Secrets:

Just some minor tweaks to this model. The nipples were to small so I made them more puffy? I also replace the nipple ring. Anyway she just needs some studs down the back of the right leg and another nipple ring on the 2nd tier of breasts left side. Other than that she's getting washed, sanded and primed today.

Before:

After:

Daemon Princesses:

These are also essentially done but for minor detailing. These shot shoe the final head that I will be molding today, unless their are any objections. Note this isn't the final head. Once cast they will each get unique heads with different hair, tentacle, and horn arrangements. I also decided to keep the features fairly subtle to allow for easier modification. This head can be easily modified to a nose-less Diaz-style daemonette head or a more more human set of facial features.

Daemon Princess # 1

To Do:

1. add some additional rivets to the armor.
2. add laces at the sides of the armor.
3. add buckles to all the armor straps.
4. finish smoothing and sharpening the armor plates.
5. add a Slaanesh symbol and trim to the harness clasp (disc).

Daemon Princess # 2

To Do:

1. add some additional studs to the arm and leg.
2. add some additional wrinkles to the loin cloth.
3. add a Slaanesh symbol as a brand to the left thigh.

Daemon Princess # 3

To Do:

1. finish her sword and add a dagger to a sash at her waist.
2. add choker and spirit stone belt.
3. add a additional piercings.

OH. MY. GOSH.

Never in my life did I think I'd see something so frigging amazing. [As far as modeling goes at least. ]

I really liked the original soul-grinder idea. You could make the stomach tear obviously not a vagina by positioning it high on the stomach, with plenty of normal skin between it and the model's nether-regions. You'll never get away from the connotations I guess, but that's kind of the idea anyway. Just don't give it lips or fangs.

Updates:

So, I worked on converting some of the little guys yesterday; while waiting for the silicon molds of Soul Grinder bits and Daemon Princess heads were setting:

Daemonettes:

Just adding a little more diversity to the troops. Weapon swaps and re-posing, etc.

Seekers:

These are still very WIP! So mold lines, seams and pin holes galore. The mix-match of colors are due to GW plastic, resin casts, and gray Aves putty.

Pleasureseekers: "Counts as Fiends"

Just a dismounted Pleasureseeker. She been needed a boob job, so I finally hooked her up.

Slayers:"Counts as Bloodletters"

Okay, so I went cheap on these and just swapped the claws out for Dark Elves swords instead of going the custom route. Hopefully, their reposing and paint job will sell them as Bloodletters. Their will ultimately be 12 in total, I'm still waiting on a 3 more boxes of daemonettes.

Wryms: "Count as Flamers"

I finally, got around to working on the last two of these. I'm only making 6 as I've come to the conclusion that two units of 3 deep striking is plenty for 2,000 point games. Besides I still have the mold so I can always make more.

Ah....headz...at last!!!

So I got the basic heads cast, yeah! I'll be changing the expressions on each, and adding different horns, hair, and detailing to each. I plan on doing 5 different heads. And yes, space marine lovers there will be a screaming head!

So, the completed kit when cast up will have lots of options: you'll be able to select one of 3 poses, you'll also get 5 different heads, 2 sets of arms with and without claws, and three weapons choices, along with removable magnetized wings. I'll also have custom conversion available upon request with alternate poses etc.

Here are a few mockups I knocked together with different horn configurations: (Note - these are done with soft clay, so they're just to give an idea of size and placement. The really horns will be sharper and less droopy. )

Anyway let me know what you'll think. Got an idea for a horns, hair style or facial expression post up a picture.

More soon: Soulgrinder pics, etc.

Okay...progress!

So, like I was saying their will be at least 5 head variants. For now they'll be based of the same basic head. But since the face looks a little to bland. I will be modifying the expressions for each into either something more aggressive or more seductive.
These are still WIP.

This was a first attempt at a screaming variants....note to self must get reference next time.... Is it just me or does this not look like a blowup doll mouth?

So, what do you think is this working so far? Or am I way off base with these?

...

Changing gears. I got a box of grave ghouls to convert up for my "Tormenters of Slaanesh" er...count as Plaguebearers. Anyway I was looking through the WF minis as came across this guy.

I think he's a perfect example of where to go with them. Black leather and a heavy S&M theme. Lots of piercings, chains, and manacles etc. I just love the peaked hood. Okay, so the little dude on his chest is kinda lame...but still.

Everything looks really great so far; I can't wait to see the sexy-grinder posted.

Have you thought about doing the tentacles for hair thing that the older, and in my opinion nicer, daemonettes had going for them, on your daemon princesses? Looking at their horns, I am thinking they might benefit from having the non-symetrical horn with flowing tentacles of the older daemonettes. I always thought that made them look extra creepy, yet alluring.

First off, impressive army, not often you see this much work put into a force and its paying off! Second, if its not too late I think you should leave the pregnant soulgrinder's face uncovered. If youre up to the sculpting challenge theres a lot you can do with the emotions of her face, straining neck, etc. Besides if the face is covered how are you going to paint her eyes rolling up into her head in pain/ectasy?

Have you considered using full/partial masks on the princesses? I'm thinking something along the lines of severina/sevora from the inquisitor line...

Oh there will be tentacle hair and asymmetrical horns. There might even be some daemonic floating Mohawk hair action as well....cause I'm sick that way! Not to worry though when I'm done with them their expression won't be so similar, and the face of each should be substantially different.

Cool you planning to put them up on Trollblood Miniatures? Lots of great stuff here although my poor old computer is having a heart attack trying to keep up with the pictures. I really like the fallen angel theme you have going here. Have you looked up the Hell Dorado line? They do some figures with almost exactly the gaping stomach your planning for the soul grinder.

Well I ran into a slight hitch in my plans. This:

That midget on the far left, that's a WF Grave Ghoul, puny ain't he.

I suppose I could try to convert them into a more upright pose, but honestly I be better sculpting new torsos to go with the other wise awesome heads and arms. But even then I doubt they approach the height if a daemonette. They really don't look very resilient.

I could easily fit three on a 40 mm bases and use them as counts as nurglings though...yes I definitely see some potential for evil looking little munchkins.

or

Can you get any more disturbed than midgets in SM gear these...

So....uh... what do you all think? Would Kroot be a better base for tormentors? How do they scal against daemonette?

Kroot are pretty good, as they are distinctly non-human, but you need to keep in mind that you might want to file down all of their body quills, manage to hide their sashes and cover/smooth their belly segmentation to make them not look like kroot. Flaggelents might be a good choice though:

Okay....stuff:

Worked on the Gluttons yesterday:

- sculpted better flowing loincloths, with wrinkles and stuff.
- added liberal piercings and welts from daemonette whips.

Oh and I did this conversion...

I also buffed up the banner bearers:

I'm also thinking of making a few more running Gluttons.

They just look cool. Just imagine that huge hoof coming down crushing a guardsman's torso under foot. If Ogre kingdoms didn't suck so bad I'd do a tricked out army. I still may...imagine one punching out a Brettans horse?

Imps of Slaanesh:

I also started working on the new bodies for these imps of Slaanesh. They're kinda look like flying monkeys, so they'll have tiny vestigial wings.

See, told ya these things were tiny. How large is the nurgling base? I was thinking of putting 3 on a 40 mm base squabbling over some treasure of some sort. With the huge grasping hands on the models, they could represent greed fairly well.

Pleasureseekers:

These are finally done. They just need a little sanding and some paint. Here's an example of the finished conversions.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I also worked on the Daemon Princesses, cleaning them up and working on the variant heads. I'm working on GS hair today. I'm excited though ordered some more silicon rubber, I want to get them molded and cast this weekend. If all goes well they be available for sale next week...PM if interested!

Daemon Princess #1

Things to do:

- this head variant will be pretty close to the FW keepers horn arrangement.
- the body is pretty much done except for some rivets on the armor, I haven't decided whether or not to engrave the individual armor plates.
- I still need to smooth out the wing joins and sculpt the neck...30 minutes tops.
- her crotch is exposed. Does she need a loincloth as well?

Daemon Princess #2

Things to do:

- needs engraving on the arm and leg bands.
- needs a few more BS rivets on the left arm and right leg.
- the forward swept horns on the head will be complemented with a more prominent nose, and long flowing anime- style hair.

Daemon Princess #3

Things to do:

- finished the sword, and beefed up the handle on it.
- re-sculpted the right shoulder and tweaked the arm for better anatomy and proportion. Still need to fix the elbow.
- will be re-sculpting the right hand to be more expressive.
- this variant head will be screaming...or moaning in ecstasy... or something... Its will have the single horn and tentacle hair of the Juan Diaz daemonettes. Don't worry I'm still working on the mouth, which will also have teeth.

Should i change the face to look more like the beak of the Diaz daemonettes?

All the head together as the are now:

If anyone has a suggestion regarding the hairdos let me know. The kit will include at least one bald head to ya can do you own hair style in GS.

More later....

I'm not quite sold on the skulls dangling off the bearers' banners. Something about them just strikes me as being out of place. They almost seem tossed on as an afterthought, sort of a 'demons are supposed to have skulls' thing. Or is that 40k is supposed to have skulls? >.>

Judgement withheld on the screaming (moaning) head right now, that single horn is bugging me but it will probably look very different with the hair added. I like the rest of the heads. And I love the pose of the of the 3rd princess. I may have to attempt something similar with my wyches...

hi. your stuff is great seri.
just wondering, have you made any models of the gorgon people (horrors)? maybe they could be juggling fire.

also on the preggy soul grinder idea, try sticking her on a stand type thing. basically a seat with six legs (like the soul grinder base) and have her wired into it. also with the belly gun, have you thought of having it with a demon climbing out of the belly gun, and a bunch of others climbing down the front of the model as if they have just climbed out. just a thought.

maybe instead of calling the gluttons, gluttons, call them blood gluttons, (they are khorne right?) or glutton slavers (representing the fact that this is a slannesh army, not a khorne one, and the gluttons don't look slanneshi, so say they were enslaved by the demonnettes, though i suppose they already are because of the wips.) if they are slaves ii would say make it a bit more distinct, coz overall they look brill, but they dont look slannessh enough.

also , you know how you cast your models, do you sculpt, then cast, or cast ready made models/conversions???

'Blood Gluttons' would be a Khorne name. Being a Slaaneshi Army, I'm guessing their official name will be something different when he's done.

And he casts his own sculpts on account of the fact that recasting existing GW stuff is illegal and if you just start recasting and selling a bunch of their stuff, they'll bite you. Hard.

Your conception of Slaanesh seems a little limited. Sure its mostly about sexy, demon girls. But I want to hint at the multi-faceted nature of Slaanesh. S/he is the God/Goddess of Excess/Vice and Sin. As in the seven deadly sins.

Gluttons:

Gluttons are the manifestation of the sin of Gluttony. Their supposed to be obese lumbering monstrosities that exist only to eat and drink. Which is why I choose ogres bull for the count as models. Their fluff already matched what i intended to use them for. They count as blood crusher because A. they're huge, and B. they're multi-ton monsters whose vast bulk serves as their armor. I submit that a giant fat guy who wants to eat you is just as terrify as a being chased by a mechanical bull.

They aren't slaves of the daemonettes but they are easily distracted by anything that they can cram into their maws, especially mortal flesh! The daemonettes on their base are their to keep them moving forward rather than chowing down.

Now having said that, I'm always open to suggestions. They already have exposed breasts, nipples, horns and piercings. So what would you do to make the more slaaneshi?

also , you know how you cast your models, do you sculpt, then cast, or cast ready made models/conversions???

It depends really. Casting for me is really just a way to save having to sculpt the same thing multiple times. Take the Daemon princesses for instance i needed three. But why start from scratch on each one, when a more generic body would save literally weeks of effort. For the gluttons everything from the waist up is GW parts, the legs are custom and the arms were converted by adding a plug in the upper arm. For the mounted daemonettes its a mix I sculpted and cast new legs with daemonette feet, and used GW heads and torsos, with sculpted on breasts. Some have cast torsos that I sculpted without their corsets. Really, it depends.

Was it really that obvious? I've got no ideas as to what to use in their place though... Really it was and attempt to make the banner look a little less plain.

Yeah for Tentacles!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Soul Grinder #3

Here's more progress on the KOS - grinder stand in. He's being based off this image:

I'm using super sculpey to quickly build up the anatomy of the model. Once baked I'll be skinning it with Aves apoxy putty and detailing it.

Soul Grinder #1

Worked on the pregnant SG as well. I'm baking the shoulders and ribcage at the moment so that I can drill the holes for the arms, and start work on them. I also started work on the mechanical legs for her mobile. The black lines on the model are there to indicate the locations of the various muscle groups.

Soul Grinder #2

I finished casting up the legs on the second SG. So, she's moving along fast, and will definitely be done this weekend. I must say she looks much better in life than in my sketches. The sexy, spider, ballerina nature of the legs is pretty creepy. The triple fan service crotch shot will doubtlessly disturb many, as well.

Daemon Princess:

I didn't get much feedback regarding the heads or hair on them. But I'd like some suggestions on adding some nice final details to them. I want them to look sexy rather than gribbly. But, looking at the GW greater daemons, they seem a little under detailed at the moment.

Anyway I have to get ready for work. Happy Friday!

WOOT TENTACLES! I might suggest a somewhat more prominent chin on the tentacle haired girl though... the way it slopes now combined with the tongue suggests Downs syndrome a bit. Then again, maybe I am just traumatized by the baby in a bottle my highschool bio teacher had.

Definitely digging where the soul grinders and that excellent KoS are going too. Great blog so far!

Oh, yea, the bald daemon princess. I think perhaps the horns are a tad big and bulky. For some reason they are saying "Khornate brutality" not "Slaaneshi delicacy". It might just be the over all shape though that suggests the skull/rabbit ear icon of Khorne though.
Still, this is a fantastic bit of work!

Well done sersi, things seem to be progressing nicely, as for detailing, ill wait to see what you do for expressions and hair details on the princesses, but on the grinders, I think one of your best options to consider may be paint detailing, as in tatooing... they are nice big models, compared to the princesses and such, and therefore it is easier/faster/more enjoyable to do tatooing on models like those...

I look forward to your progress!

Okay, progress!

First here is the second KOS:

I've completely bulked him out in sculpey as much as needed to. I'll be switching gray-tinted Aves Fixit Sculpt next. The claws you see on the model were originally intended for the Daemon Princess models, and are just place holders. They far to small compared to my reference image, and will be replaced later. The feet are from the WF Giant model and are also to small, so I'll be re-sculpting on those too.

Here's the model scaled against an IG model.

Here's the model scaled against the FW KOS model.

Here is where I am on the first Soul Grinder:

Here it is scaled against the FW KOS.

And here is my Progress with the pregnant Soul Grinder:

She's been fun to sculpt, working out the anatomy so that the chest and arms could actually work resulted in two sets of pectoral muscles, which ofcourse justifies a second set of breasts, no?

Here the model is scaled against a IG model:

Here the model is scaled against a the 6.5 inch tall FW KOS model:

Sorry, its a bit blurry.

Finally, because a few people asked here's some scaling shots of the Daemon Princesses and a group shot of the larger models in the army.

Daemon Princesses first. Note that the FW KOS is 6.5 inches tall, while the IG model is 1 inch tall.

Group Shots

Found this thread the other day, went through every page. i simply LOVE it.(its why i created an account). I was annoyed that they removed the old metal daemonette models, and its great to see the spirit of those back even in the monstrous creatures. It looks... gorgous. And inspirational.

Post by: DreadAssassin

I agree with Bascilica, games-workshop usually do some nice miniatures... and some not so nice ones... but one of their biggest blunders in my opinion was making the new plastic daemonettes look like the older [3rd gen?] ones. The metal ones from last edition, released with Hordes of Chaos for WH Fantasy were some of the best metal miniatures they had done for a while. Not only did their appearance fit the rules and fluff, in my opinion, they also looked better.

If i was an empire soldier or imperiall guardsmen, i would be more distracted (i.e. their rules) by the older models than the new plastic ones.

Still. Bloody good work Sersi! Keep it up, hope you do more brilliant work in the future!

Bascilica:

Welcome to Dakka! Thanks for the enthusiastic post. I think we all miss the Diaz-nettes. But having said that they were fairly static, and hard to convert. I don't get it personally, the Dark Elves line was just redone, and their Harpies still have hanging breasts (note to self by a few sets before they evaporate as well). They have no reason to be wearing clothing, other than revealing lingerie...which in my opion is more naked that naked.... The corset thing is rather daft, yeah I get this like a painful thing to wear, but is not emphasized enough if that's what their going for.

DreadAssassin:

Thanks! Its seems GW is dead set on reliving its "glorious" past.

Warboss Gutrip

Come on now, only 9/10th the way to Chaos? Have I mention that Chaos has pie? Oh, and this...

Here's another comparison with the FW KOS. It should be easier to see now that he's more of a neutral gray.

So, I worked on the big boy some more last night. With his hunched over pose he's approximately 14.5 cm tall, if he were standing erect he'd be around 20 cm. At this point I've skinned him with Aves Fixit Sculpt, so he's rock solid. I've enlarged the feet and replaced the claws with a far larger set; to better match the reference. Hopefully they look alright, if not let me know. He's also had his horns blocked in and his head started.

One tiny niggling worry about the Soul Grinders. Where are the guns? I have to admit without reading the blog I'd find it hard to work out which are Soul Grinders and which is the Keeper of Secrets. The Daemon Princesses work beautifully at this as a triplet of similiar designs they are obviously the same role. However the Soul Grinders lack this.

littleboyblues:

Funny you should mention that as a friend and I have been considering building a "Great Game" themed table or a Daemon world table.

gameandwatch:

Nah...I'll be doing both, but I'm still sculpting the basic marines to cast. The Crusade I've been planning will be taking allied Daemonhunter Inquisitor as a counts as "Ecclesiastic Confessor" and storm troopers as fodder. The Templars are going to have Gothic MK8 armor just like the current Emperor's Champion and the Jump Pack Chaplain. The Terminators will have armor similar to the Grey Knight Terminators. I'm still working on the designs of the: Neophytes, Confessor, and Stormtroopers. I'll definitely be a while on this one

For the Emperors Children, Tortoise's EC on Warseer along with Liber Chaotica have really inspired me to build a basic marine body and go heavy on the Noise marine iconography. I'll probably do ten basic bodies and cast as needed. I'll still use GW bits for the weapons and heads ETC.

grey_death:

Thanks. I'd be happy to help out with any sculpting questions you might have. I know I'll definitely be combing your site for tips, when I start painting. I just hope I can do it justice. At the very least I'll be getting lots of practice.

deadly chicken:

Oh I'm molding all the models Ive sculpted. Although the epoxy putty I use to sculpt them is ridiculously strong, solid resin is pretty much invulnerable. I want to sell copies of them as well as soon as I can figure out a good way to go about doing it.

Llamahead:

Sorry, I haven't been very clear on the what the models represent. The two larger "4-armed" models will be used as HQ's. The FW KOS will just be used as a KOS; while the scratch-built one will either be used as a KOS or as a "counts as" Skarbrand.

For the Soul Grinders their as two types. The Pregnant one and the 6-legged one. For the Pregnant one the maw cannon will be mounted in the belly, and the harvester is represented by her single eye. For the 6-legged one, the maw cannon will be represented by the screaming mouth, and the harvester by her up raised hands. Although, I've considered incorporating some Eldar heavy weapon designs into the sculpt instead. Maybe a fused gun/claw arm similar to the official model.

Hi All! This is going to be a post. I've gotten allot done ins the last few days but haven't had time to get the pics organized and posted.

FW KOS:

Here I've replaced all of the GS putty studs on the leggings and arm with ball bearings and chromed glass beads. I still have to make a new symbol for her staff and need to re-attach the whip otherwise she's done.

Close up of the leg. Note also the bead work on the loin cloth, and the metal nipple ring.

Close up of the arm. Note also the bead on the forehead and the bead on her pierced tongue.

Daemon Princesses:

Lots of detailing work done here, especially fixing the faces.

Princess # 1

Here is the detailed bead work I did on torso, and arm. Also notice that the head has been swapped.

Princess # 2

Here is the detailed bead work I did on her arms and legs. Also notice that the head has been swapped their all fully interchangeable all four poses and all five heads.

Princess # 3

Here's a close up of here enlarged chin. As several people pointed out that she looked chinless.

Head Swaps:

These are just to show how effected the heads are when sapped out.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Scratch built Keeper of Secrets:

I should have this guy all massed out today. I've left the hand and arms undeveloped at the wrists and fingers as I've not finalized the pose yet. I'm also trying to keep him generic looking to avoid IP issues if I decided to sell him. He'll probably have hand that can e swapped out, and possibly a head swap as well.

These are from two days ago:

As of last night:

Oh and a scale shot with a true-scaled marine....

Pregnant Soulgrinder:

She's coming along nicely....

Two days ago....

As of last night...

A few close ups of the er...anatomy.

And finally the current head WIP. I'm trying something a bit different here by starting with the skull and building upto the moaning head.

I really like the last head swap. And the one that was chinless might look better without the long tounge.

The eye sockets on the skull are too high, if you look at a human skull you'll notice they are a lot lower than you may have assumed.

It doesn't matter that much, but the proportions of her head are going to come out looking a bit neanderthal; her jaw is very large and wide and her forehead is very reduced.

The KoS-counts as soulgrinder is amazing though, great sculpt. I really like seeing all of these come together.

Admittedly, my first thought on seeing your scratch sculpted KoS was 'nice arse'.

Then again, for a Slaaneshii army, that's probably not a bad thing...

Oh, and I like the long extended tongue on the princess.

Man your work is brilliant! I can't wait to see your finished army, especially the (disgusting) soul-pregger... or is it preg-grinder?

Awesome stuff
