Hello everyone,

I realize I've written too much on the first posts, so I've edited them to remove all the non-useful stuff (and OMG there was a lot uh!!)

So this is the first mini I've painted after a 3-years break:

Introducing Skritch, Clan Pestilens Novice:

He's supposed to be a young skaven who has recently joined the ranks of the Plague Monks, that's why he has no right to handle a blessed-and-rotten staff, but has to fight with the casual sword and shield... Btw, the skaven symbol on the shoulder parchment was written with a paper pen... Easier that way!
I wanted something a bit different from rust on my Skavens, so I tried to obtain a "Verdigris" effect in the recesses of the shield, sword and nails, and I'm quite happy about it...

After some errors, trials and re-doing, I came to think I had to try and have the gem on its shield glow... Not so good, but it'll stay that way anyway...

These are the most useful tricks I've learnt with this model:

How to make "Verdigris" : mix 1/1 Scaly Green and Skull White, water down a lot (something like 1/3 paint, 2/3 water), apply in the recesses of the metal part, wait for 1min: that's done!
BEWARE 1: Verdigris, unlike rust, doesn't drip from its nesting place, so don't make it a fountain!
BEWARE 2: Don't have Scaly green anymore? Erh... I guess you could use some Hawk turquoise, mixed with a bit of Snot Green, plus White... I guess it could do DA job!

Dirty robes : on a very light base (Bleached Bone or Skull White), apply multiple layers of GW Washes; your main one can be Devlan Mud, Gryphonne Sepia or Ogryn Flesh (your call); in between each "main" layer, apply small patches of Baal Red, Asurmen Blue, Leviathan Purple, Thraka Green... Yum so rotten!!!

I guess that's all for today...

Until then,

I love Skavens, I just don't have much time to take care of them huh...

But one day, I'll go through them all, and have a weirdy-spawny furry wave of wanton destruction rampaging on the Old World hahahaha!!! (well, if we can gather such courage! lol)

I think it's the shield itself.

Erh.... As Grim said, it was supposed to come from the small gem in the shield's forehead...

I don't think I got it that right... But I'll keep it as a reminder!

@ghosty: What do you mean by summit?!?

And as for Tyranids, since I've lost most of my army (Genestealers, Hormagaunts, Warriors and Zoanthropes), I haven't bought some more... I've used some tyranid bits for my future CSM Possessed, but I don't think it'll help...

They were from the "Custom Tyranid" era, and I had made a horde of "jumpers", I had cut all the ankles of my gaunts and warriors, repositioned the "foot" as if they were in mid-air, put a few of them on flyer bases, it looked really dynamic and great (well, I thought so at least..)

If this is of any help......

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so let's go for another stride...

After painting the first member of my distant-far-future-maybe-in-a-year-or-two Skaven Army, I got some ancient Epic-scale Paladin Knights on ebay. For those that don't know, they were some sort of Imperial tiny titans, organised in Households (usually 9 Knights), often under the patronage of a Baron (a special Knight - not so good, but nice fluff anyway).

It quickly appeared that they weren't very detailed (plastic castings in the 90's... not so good huh!), so I first came up to this:

I was quite happy with the progressive blue to white on the main armour plates, but there was nothing much to catch the eye... So I tried something I was very uncomfortable with: freehand insignas!! After a few retries on a paper, I found a nice one that I could barely handle, but could look nice on the mini's shoulder. I came up with something that looked like a Scorpio:

The World Tree's offsprings - Current WIP: "da Snipa wooz'da best shut uvva dat side'uv town" @ 2009/07/26 16:55:02

Post by: Yggdrasil

Oops, some mishap, I submitted instead of previewing...

Ok so on with the Scorpio...

I added a few details and the Knight is now complete:

General view

Front view: maybe I should display an epic-scaled human model to imagine its bulk!?! Scorpio insigna on right leg, Knight number in formation (#4) on left leg...

Left side: an Inquisitorial badge, to remind everyone the Household is currently under the Inquisition's command, and the Scorpio insigna on the shoulder

Right side: A quite-failed flaming shoulder... and an arabic-like campaign badge on the leg.

As for the tall plant on the base, it's a simple cut off plastic plant I got from an interior decoration shop... but I think it looks great!

So this was the story of the Paladin Knight.... nothing very impressive, I admit... but it was fun painting it anyway... And it has given me some ideas for modelling a whole Nurgle household, with pus-belching guns and close-combat tentacles!!!

Things I learnt with this model: I had never thought I could paint a freehand stylized scorpio, that would look like a scorpio, but I'm satisfied with the result... !!

Now on to a new experience: sculpting nurglesque infestation with Green Stuff!!!

With WD issue XYZ (can't remember, sorry) were "generously" offered a SM Terminator and an Ork Nob, from the AOBR base box...

Ok, so I want to try greenstuffing it into a radical Inquisitor, who's bargained with the Ruinous Powers (especially the most generous of all Gods: Father Nurgle) and who's on the brink of yielding its soul to the dark side... I want it to be a test subject, so most of the model will be realized with the disposable SM Terminator parts, with a few bitz from boxes I have...
Hopefully, I had some sprues that helped me find some inspiration: some CSM, a CSM Terminator Lord and a WFB Imperial Flagellant Warband!!!

So the idea was that the once-noble Inquisitor has found a Power Fist imbued with a Plaguebearer's essence, had mounted it on its Terminator suit.
But the catch is that the daemonic weapon is slowly corrupting the Armour, and the Inquisitor inside!

The fist would be on the left side, so I maintained the right side of the suit as pure as possible (with a few battlewear), while showing that the corruption was coming from the power fist, and slowly reaching to the other side!
I first came with this:

But it wasn't obvious he was an Inquisitor, and the corruption wasn't as pronounced as I wanted it to be...

So I went deeper into the reasons why he had a blindfolded head:

[Reckoning its mistake but unable to end his mission for the Emperor, the Inquisitor has blinded himself with a torture-helmet. Seeing this, Father Nurgle has granted its future champion with a third eye, that has sprouted from the top of the suit]

You can see the tentacle and the Inquisitor's new eye here:

Also note the Inquisitorial Seal under the barrels of the Stormbolter: the last thing the heretics are seeing when they are executed is the Symbol of the Inquisition!!!

Next is a close-up on the daemon weapon: a Plaguebearer face is emerging from the PF, tentacles are coming out of it...

I also wanted to try and sculpt one of Nurgle's favorite symbol: the Fly! So that's why he ended up with a stylized nurglesque fly on his right leg: this personal icon is named Zobi (after a French song by "Les Negresses Vertes": Zobi la Mouche (ie. "Zobi the Fly"). I guess I can paint the Icon like human skin, spread and nailed on the leg...

Last pic: a rear view, we can see some more tentacles going out of the suit, plus an extra Inq. Badge on the pure-side (the right leg).
On the base is an eye sprouting out of the ground: this is a hint that maybe Tzeentch was the cause of all this, and is now watching his work?!? (and I had a small GS ball left, so I didn't want to waste it! )

I still have to find a paint scheme to paint him, so I can still try to improve this model.....
(I think I got the feel of a pure-half and a dark-half quite well, but who knows...)

Has anyone a comment or suggestion, so that I can try and make it better?!?

Thx for reading,

He's looking really good. One thing that you could do is make the purity seal on his left leg look really tatty. Let's face it, he's not very pure any more is he?

I remember the old (2nd edition I think) inquisitor in terminator armour was painted purple. For an interesting paint scheme maybe have the right side of him a nice shiny, bright, purple, slowly fading/flaking off into a dark, corrupt, rusty aubergine type colour on the left?

Love the third eye by the way

Ah, the Inquisitorial seal on his leg wasn't supposed to be the usual "purity parchment" but more of an armour plate...

I think I didn't get it that good huh...

As for the purple scheme, that could be a nice idea.... I've always loved purple models... Maybe I'll try something like this (may have to test it on a SM model though beforehands uh! )

Thx for the comment....

As I had the free-issued-with-WD Ork AoBR Nob, I wanted to try something different from my Skavens, Undead or Daemons, so begun work on him... I had painted two WFB Orcs for my Undead army years ago, so this would be my first Ork ever... A bit daunting

I didn't like his head so swapped it for a WFB one, drilled a hole through his left eye then screwed a... screw into the hole to make a crude bionic eye...

Then added an Orkish "aimhole" (don't know the word in English sorry) + foresight on the Slugga

And a piece of protective cloth from a military detonator package, which would turn out either as a tiger pelt or a camouflage piece of clothing...

I didn't want much for the conversions, so with this done, I begun painting him...
I have always liked the "Tiger Meet", an international meeting of all Air Forces Squadron that have the Tiger as their symbol, so this inspired me for this Nob [ link: http://www.natotigers.org/ ]...
Why not having a stray tribe of the Blood Axes Klan worshipping "Da Great Tiga" as their war totem?!?

White basecoat, some bright colours, an orange+black shoulder pad, orange details, some highlights...

Decided that the more "techy" features would be close to Hawk Turquoise,

and recalled the blue bionic eye and red right eye on the rear of the choppa:

I didn't want to use metallic colours so tried to NMM the grenade, choppa and slugga, but it didn't turn out that well... It was my first try, so I guess I'll have to do better next time!

After some more work, basing finished, final highlights, armour camouflaged, I can introduce...

Gruuk, Brutish Nob of da Wyld Tigaz Klan!!!

Thanks for looking!

I think he meant the purity seal next to the 'fly-plate'.

I have a question about the eye: did you do the whole thing in one go, or did you get the basic shape down and then add the eyelid once it set?

... I'm so dumb lol....

Oh I see what you mean... That's quite right actually, this was concern earlier but forgot about it...

So what do you think? Should I utterly scrap it off?

Should I keep it? If so, how can I show it's tainted? Some more greenstuffing? Only through painting?

Dragonlover wrote:I have a question about the eye: did you do the whole thing in one go, or did you get the basic shape down and then add the eyelid once it set?

I did it in 2 steps: first the eyeball fitted on the end of a "looped" wire (to make some bulk for the eyeball), waited for the GS to cure, then process the entire tentacle, finishing with the eyelids...
I also "dropped" one or two plastic spikes on the tentacle itself, as you can see on this pic and a small GS "horn" to remind of the "one eye - one horn" Plaguebearers...

I did the same for the Plaguebearer's eye on the Power Fist: first eyeball, cure, then eyelids...

Actually I had no Plaguebearer model or pic when I sculpted it, did it only from memories, plus it was my first real attempt at sculpting, so I'm pretty happy with the result... Just concerned about how it will turn out once painted... I hope it won't get too messy!!!

Hope this answers your question...

It does, thanks very much. So far the only eyelid I've sculpted was around a ping pong ball, but it looks like I'll be doing some smaller ones some point soon.

How about the purity seal?

And yeah, on a smaller scale, I guess sculpting is easier to do (don't have to put lots of details)...

I'd go with painting it so it looks really aged, so a sort of nicotine yellow in the middle of the parchment, with quite dark brown edges. Maybe cut some nicks into the wax part?

The Inquisitor is looking great. Where is that head from?

The only criticism I have is the tentacles don't look like the come from any where. Are they supposed to be part of his body or separate creatures riding around on him? If they are part of his body then you should have the armor cracked around the tentacles. If they are separate I would paint them with a very individual color scheme to the model to reinforce that notion. If they are separate things then in game they could be his familiars which are allowed to be mounted on the same base as the inquisitor. Perhaps they are all that is left of a poor cherub and a servo skull.

If I'm not mistaken, the head is from the much abused Flagellant box. I really need to get one of those myself, thinking about it.

Dragonlover's right, the head's from the WFB Imperial Flagellant sprue...

I had bought a whole box at first for some renegade IG, and this one head was one of the ones I liked the least, but I think it fits well with the model (on a metaphoric aspect only... it was painful getting the beard fit into the armour!!!)

Ironwright wrote:

They're supposed to sprout from inside the armour, but only he (and Father Nurgle) knows whether they are part of his body as well uh... I didn't do cracks on the armour but a lot of mushy flesh where the tentacles emerge from the suit... But maybe I didn't get it right...

(Please be tolerant, that was (and still is) my first attempt at sculpting [and I've never good at arts in school ])

@ Dragonlover: Yeah, go and have some!!! Flagellants are invaluable as spare bits!!! The models are great, a lot of details & bits, that are very characterful... be it for IG, Witch/Daemon Hunters, Daemons, CSM, even Skavens (oh a lot of bells!!!)
My Plaguebearers Command benefitted alot from them: the blood-covered spikes, icon pole and bells come from this very sprue!!! Not to mention the possibilities with their bodies!!

First squad Icon bearer

First squad Instrument-bearer

Some simple conversions, but helped me avoid twin commands of both Plaguebearer squads!

Put some efforts on the rest of the Plague Monks regiment... The sprues were, as usual, quite full of bitz, so came up with a few no-mundane Plague Monks characters:

The champion's not here: somehow I forgot to take some pics of him!

These are the Monks in detail:

  • Halberdier Monk

  • Mutant Monk

  • The ratface banner top looked like a mask to me; couldn't have Wyrdstone mutated a ratling and have his head sprout from one of his arm?!? This one tries to conceal this by wearing a mask, to no avail of course !!

  • Tink, Skryre bodyguard

  • Crookspaw, the Plague Priest, had "befriended" some Skryre enginseers, who had offered him to turn one of his novices into a Skryre killing machine! This poor Novice has had his arms cut off, then was grafted a huge Wyrdstone shard to power his overstrained body and a censer flail to crush his master's foes.... But he's not aware of it anymore, for his brain has been twisted by the raw power of the Wyrdstone!!

  • Ragamuffyn, the Puppeteer

  • And I had a bit of time, so painted two of them, a Lancer and a Horned Rat Icon bearer:

Lancer Monk, painted mainly with Citadel Washes, on a white undercoat

And a very pious Monk with Icon... on a black undercoat... had a bit more trouble with this one

Next will be some pics of Crookspaw, the Plague Priest!

    Cheers,

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted in this thread... I guess self-threadomancy isn't that serious?!?

Anyway, I have been working a bit on my plague monks during summer time, here are a few pix...

First is a group shot. We cannot see that much, but it appears some of you like to see the other's workspaces, so it'll give you a glimpse!

Next are two of the almost finished lads...

    The Puppeteer :

    And :

And his friend, Bell-ringing fanatic Monk :

I am especially proud of his "face", I don't know how I managed to paint all those little wrinkle-like strokes... Please zoom in on him and let me know what you guys think!!

As for Island of Blood, a friend and I each bought 1 box, sharing the two armies.

As you can guess I got my hands on the Skavens, and he took hold of the pointy-nitty elves!
The catch is, my Friendly Games Workshop store is running a painting contest for the release of Island of Blood!
For those who had pre-ordered the box, there was a lottery in which each guy was awarded a random mini...

As lucky as ever, we picked up 1 Skaven lancer & and 1 Lothern Sea-guard (there were rat ogres, mages, Moudler packmaster left... ) !! So, wanting to challenge the Nasty Gods of Luck & Chance, we each settled on a race swap for the contest : I would be painting the Sea Guard, and he the Skaven Clan Rat!

I'm not used to painting Elves, but I'll try my best... The deadline is September 25th, so wish me luck!!!

This is the progress I've made so far:

I'm not pretty happy with the blue basecoat on the shield, and I'm thinking of turning it back to white....

    Whaddya think?!?

More than sixty views in 1 day and not a single note, such as "keep it blue" or "turn it white"?!?

Well, I've kept on anyway... Here's today progress... I decided to turn the shield back in white...

I mostly worked on the shield & the cloth pieces...

I'm a bit disappointed by how the orange cloth turned out... But I cannot figure out what's been done wrong...

    Is it the highlight colour?!?

    I went:
    Basecoat in Macharius Orange,
    Wash in Baal Red,
    Macharius Orange coat,
Blazing Orange highlights, adding some Skull White & Sunburst Yellow for the lighter ones,
    up to pure Skull White,
And finished with a glaze of Blazing Orange...

    What's wrong with this?!?

I'm much happier with the shield :

From that close, it's a bit messy, but I'm really happy with the freehand scales - merely dots, actually - on the "wyvern" and waves....

I still have a lot to do:

    - some more waves on the armour lining,
    - goldish NMM attempts on the shell-like items and silver NMM on the mails,
    - the gems,
    - the face,
    - the green pieces of clothes,
    - some vine freehand attempts on the helmet,
    - the base.

As of the gem, I'm still wondering what colour would be best...

I'm tempted by red, but it will add another colour on the mini and I'm not sure that's a good idea; a deep blue or purple also appeal to me...

I'm no good a colour theory, so I wouldn't mind a little help....

    Thanks for looking!

Your orange cloth came out too red, I'd say. I'd start from Macharius Solar and highlight up by starting with Blazing Orange and adding Sunburst Yellow as you go. Don't work it up to white, as it will make it look washed out.

The shield looks fantastic, well done.

@ Some_Call_Me_Tim? : Thanks!! Good luck on your Earth Caste Taus, I'm following them with eagerness!

@ kadeton : Thanks for the advice on the orange cloth... Maybe I'll try tonight, I should have a small painting session after the 1st "Bones" episode!

I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it in time, as I can only paint at night... Seems like I'll have to negotiate this weekend...

    Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, I managed to get a bit of work on my elf... from 11pm to 1.45am... Tomorrow will be more of "toiling" than "working"

@ kadeton : I didn't try and get the orange band better, I guess I'll do it IF I manage to finish all the rest before saturday... Then, once the mini is almost finished, I'll try and correct according to your advice!

Anyway, here's the progress so far:

I followed Jin's advice in painting the gems in blue, they aren't finished yet but I think the colour's nice... So thanks!

Worked on the green robe & helmet highlights, finished the waves on the armour bottom, added waves too on the quiver, and highlighted the hanging bandana with camo green & rotting flesh...

    Here are some closer pics...

Back view - details on quiver & waves

Close-up on the "scarf" & quiver... I'm happy I set on a slightly different colour for highlighting the scarf, compared to the robe (Camo Green & Rotting Flesh, compared to Scorpion Green)

    Another close view

The pics are far from perfect, but it's 2am right now so there's no natural light at the moment...

Tomorrow, I'll begin the NMM in the two colours : silver & gold... As it's quite new for me, would anyone have a few advices / links / avoidable mistakes / etc... to give me?!?

    Thanks in advance,

As promised, I went on with trying NMM... I don't think I pulled it off that good, but at least it yields a nice effect, if not metallic...

    Here are the pics :

Front view - a bit dark - finished the gems & gold NMM

I just finished the shield... Any ideas as to how improve the flames?

My best attempt at NMM - how can I improve it further?!?

I eventually began his right arm, here it is so far :

Done with Gems & gold NMM

    I have two concerns :

    - Is blue a good choice for the "supposed" algae?!? It's not very algae-esque, but I think blue balances the model more than a green one... I'm thinking of highlighting it towards Hawk Turquoise, but I'm concerned it might add yet another colour to the palette, so my mind is not made up yet...

    - I want the shaft to remain white... Is it a good idea?!? The only two white parts on the models will be the shield background & the spear shaft... What do you think?

Only 6 days left to finish it, and I cannot seem to see the end!!! Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some time... If I manage to resist the urge to open my Halo:Reach container!!!

    Wish me luck,

go darker towards the bottom of the greens and push the polor opposites on the NMM's as you want them to truely show.

Could you explain a bit more, Empchild?!? I don't really get it...

Here's today's update... Finished most of the armour mail, bow, and the last NMM golden shells...

    Back view

    Front view

Some more efforts to make :

    - NMM helm & spear blade: these are going to be tough...
    - Algae : still debating on Hawk Turquoise or Ice blue highlights...
    - right sleeve..
    - face
    - base.

I think I'll have to take a day off next week if I am to finish it by Friday...

IIRC, I had to fit in a chopped, regular SM head inside the hole, somewhere halfway around the jaw cables & mouth vent, then strap the head on top! We can see it a bit on that pic (bottom left of the head) :

    Hope it helps!

What should I understand, BH?!? Were all the previous minis really THAT BAD?!?

Thanks anyway, I've been putting more time than I had first expected for this mini... So I hope it shows!!

But your praise just make me want to paint it some more! Today I asked my boss about taking my Thursday off so that I could be sure to finish it before Friday... He said he'd think about it...

You're welcome... Glad I could help!!

I took my day off today, so I have made some progress...

I have finished the helm... Though I tried to make it silver with NMM, it doesn't show as well as with gold... But looks nice anyway, IMO!

I guess I got something wrong on the way for steel NMM, so if anyone could point that out to me, I'd be grateful!

At that point, I'm considering the body as "done"... I'm a bit annoyed with the face & boots, but I tried a few things and they don't seem to work... So unless someone can save the day, I'll leave them as is!

So, here at last, work has begun on the algae & right arm... I'm pretty happy with the algae colours, I'm still in the process of highlighting it... The green sleeve & glove are over... And I'm afraid to begin the spear blade, as I hope I won't mess it as much as the helm!!!

    Thanks for reading!

@ Some_call_me_tim? : Thanks! I quite believe you're right for the golden parts, but I think the steel ones totally suck...

They do look good though, so I'm not too sad about them...

@ Reecius : Thanks!! Also went through your Army list article, you've got a nice & down-to-earth (ie. efficient) way of making up an army!
I personally prefer the more fluffy & inefficient ones, but I'm no tourney player so this gives some good insight should I ever want to optimize my dudes!
I especially felt aimed at as "those guys that give their squads all the non-useful upgrades", but that's the way I like it!

Eventually, time for a break... I want to think the whole mini's over, glued and ready to be put on a base... Which I still have to design...

No pics, sorry, it's night & they'll be too dark (yes, I already thought of turning the lights ON ) ...

    Tomorrow, if all goes well!!

    Thanks for the support,

Edit: by the way, I just stumbled onto a post by a painter who is forsaking NMM for his own reasons... Some won't agree with him, but this can still make us think about what we like in OUR Hobby...

    Thank you guys!!!!

@ BlackHand : I won't swap it again, that was a swap of unpainted minis!! Though my friend is quite unhappy with his Skaven, so he might be giving it back to me!

So on Saturday, we went on to our 100km-away GW store, to submit our mini...

I took some pics, but forgot my camera at my sister's house, so I won't be able to show them before next weekend!!!

There were a dozen minis; some rather simple, on the same basis as we did (single trooper mini from the infantry regiments), some more complicated & converted.

Those especially worthy of note were :

    - An IoB Rat Ogre on a pile of shattered stone pillars, restrained from below with a leash by the 3 plague monks from the Plague Furnace kit : full of dynamism, nicely converted, but the owner clearly lacked time to finish it, as some areas (on the back, mostly) were only basecoated! A shame, for it was clearly the best entry IMHO.

    - A heavily converted HE lord on Griffin : actually, it was an Elf Lord on Lion! The owner masterfully converted the rear half of the IoB griffin, adding to it some parts of Chrace Lions from the HE chariot kits!
An very original idea, most probably painstaking, but neatly executed...
He seemed to use a forward leg from each of the chariot kit lions, re-sculpted the maw in a more open way, and fitted all of this to the griffin in a leaping motion, very dynamic as well...
Not to mention the snowy base, shimmering with ice crystals & leaf branches made from the WHFB basing kit... Really, really efficient...

As for the result, I should get it tomorrow... The store manager told me that it would probably be between my sea guard elf & the "leaping lion w/ lord", so I'm eager to know...

I think my painting might be a bit more thorough, but the movement, conversion effort & awesome base should win the day over my plain base & mini "simpleness"...

The award would be a High Elf news of the winner's choice... Not really interesting as I won't - ever - play Elves!

I'll let you know as soon as I know...

Thanks for those who supported me!

As of this weekend, I went back on my Plague Monks... Almost finished, I still have to finish the verdigris on their metal parts, & spend some more efforts on the command party...
Some pics when I get my camera back!

So, after all, here is the result :

I ended up 2nd, and my friend 3rd!!!!

Here are the finished pics of our two miniatures (I the Elf, he the Skaven) "Beware, overload of pics incoming":

  • High Elf Lothern Sea Guard, "Before the Storm"...

I know, I should have made a base, but I ran out of time...

  • Skaven Clan Rat with Spear (my friend's mini, ranked 3rd)

  • And the winner, an awesome conversion & sculpting :

I'm really impressed with the base, it's really neat and exhales a sense of quietness & purity... As for the mini in itself, it's really complicated, with the rear of the IoB griffin, and the front of a Chrace Lion with paws from 2 Lions... A great idea, perfectly executed in terms of sculpting...
As for the painting, honestly it's not that neat actually... The highlights & blendings are a bit rougher, but I admit the overall feeling of the mini is far better than mine!

  • Next is my favourite mini in the competition, very dynamic (and I cannot resist that Plague Furnace Crew)!!!

The Plague Monks seem to be having a really hard time, trying to harness the Rat Ogre's fury!!! I love it!!!

  • Lastly, some other minis in the comp :

    Pretty nice as well!!!

  • I really had a nice time painting this mini, and it's undoubtedly the best I have ever painted!!!

I made some experiments & learnt a lot, whether in techniques or colour schemes, but I also made sure I have terrible weaknesses : I'm bad at faces & eyes, I didn't get the steel NMM, and I'm desperately slow...

I'll have to work on that, especially the faces & eyes... It'll be far more useful than the time-consuming NMM!!!!

Thanks for those of you out there who supported me, it helped me a lot in keeping me motivated to get it through!

_Tim?, kadeton, Empchild, The Good Green, Rose_Mountainz, BLACKHAND, Reecius, Sageheart, kastellan : even the smallest kind words were truly welcome!!!

Also, finished my Plague Monks this weekend... Some pics next time!

    Thanks for looking,

I am really not that into the lion...its pose looks very stiff, like a statue. And the painting is not that great, I really do not see why the one with the Plague Monks and the Rat Ogre didn't win 1st place, there is so much character in it!

    Merci!

Usually my minis aren't that well painted, and I've never been good at arts in school... I guess if you spend a lot, a lot & a lot of time, and then again some more, painting a single mini, everyone can achieve the same result!!! Think that I spent something like 40 hours getting around with it, and I still see some details I could work on!

As for Games Day, I guess not... (see reasons above : not enough skill & imagination) But the GW store manager challenged me to paint the mini I scratchbuilt during last year's Scrap Demon & bring it to the 2011 Games Day, so maybe I'll take the bait...

@kastellan : 'Welcome, you deserve it!!!

Ok, now for some updates on the Skavens... I finished the first regiment of my future Skaven Host!!!

    Here be Plague Monks!!!

The Plague Deacon, Krookspaw the Infectious :

    Skuulik the Blind :

Esaki Dusksnake, Eshin infiltraitor [edit: that was a mis-spelling, but it fits the Skaven theme perfectly, doesn't it? An infil-traitor hahaha (sorry for you, InfilTRAITOR, I didn't mean to hijack your username ] :

Goreek the Devout, bearer of the Seeping Trinity :

    Boneklaw, halberdier :

And, a few group shots :

    Front rank :

    Quite threatening uh?

So, I'm proud to say they look quite good... Though the painting has quite evolved over time (Skritch was painted over a year ago!), I still think they look like a proper seeping host of infectious boons...

I agree with this, the use of purple is great (btw, is it your camera or did you use a light purple wash on the robes?)

Great job, I especially like the details you worked on every model of the unit.

The boils might benefit from a slight, very controlled Scab Red wash, and then a dot of white mixed with Bleached Bone in the middle of each boil. The purple looks great, and I like the dirty feeling of the robes! How did you do it?

    @ monkeytroll, kastellan, Rose_Mountainz :

Thanks !! People seem to enjoy the purple indeed, I like using it for the details...

    @ Hyenajoe :

Some robes got various washes of green, blue, red, and purple so you may see some hues in them, that's possible!

Also thanks for pointing out the details, I'm spending a lot of time trying to male each model unique, though it doesn't show much when they're formed up... So I can only be happy when someone notices it!!

    @ _Tim? :

As for the boils / warts / bubons, they do have red & purple washes, but I've been preventing myself from touching them up, in an attempt to spend less time on the details to get an army painted quicker, to a less-than-usual painting standard... So yes, I could've done them better, but I think I'll leave them as is!! lol

As for the robes, there has been various techniques used from the first mini, last year, to the last batch of ten, a month ago!!!

But the way to go has been all the same :
    - light basecoat (either White, or Dheneb Stone, or Bleached Bone, or Rotting Flesh):
    - 2 heavy layers of Gryphonne Sepia;
    - Various coloured washes to add some small stains, hues & shades, mainly Asurmen Blue, Baal Red, Leviathan Purple, Thraka Green; all watered down to (try to) remain subtle;
    - 1 or 2 other layers of Gryphonne Sepia to soften the coloured washes;
    - some minor highlights on the edges with the basecoat.

    Now for some updates :

Since I hadn't prepared my Clan Rats for painting last weekend, I set myself to a mini I had assembled last year, GSed a bit this summer, but never painted...

I used it as a test mini for my future Nurgle army... I'm not really convinced yet, but I guess that's something for a start!

So here it is, in its (WIP - still have the base to paint) zombified splendor!!

Plaguebrother R'phul, Host of Nig'zsok the Meagre :

    Some various pics :

  • A close-up view

  • The shoulder pad with Symbol of Nurgle... Oozing with blood & other sick, oily matter...

  • A small plaguebearer face on the backpack... I had a small drop of GS left!!

  • An attempt at OSL on the bolter... supposed to be a green marker light...

  • I am so happy with his face, I think I managed to render it nicely with bruises, scary gaze, sick skin tone... And what do you think of the bloodied face trapped in his backpack?

  • So... I have a week's worth of holiday ahead, I'll be trying to finish him & begin my next Clan Rats regiment...

As for the Skaven : do you think I should stick to the almost same palette for the regular Clan rats regiments, or do I change them utterly to make the Plague Monks stand out more? I'm leaning towards a Pestilens-affiliated army, so I think it might be better to keep them close...

I also plan on using the few Pestilens bodies left as the regular units Champions, what do you think?

    Thanks for looking,

Well, it seems my Plague Marine wasn't worthy of any comment...

    Updates:

  • Plague-brother R'phul :

I finished basing it nevertheless, so he's done now :

Is he really that bad, or isn't there anything wrong with him (ie. "Wow, yet another Plague Marine", "How boring", etc...)????

  • Tzeentch CSM Test mini :

At first he was only kitbashed, but I found he'd be better with a few GS bit here and there...

As for his right arm, I still cannot choose whether to add a boltgun and count my future squad as Tzeentch CSM squad or Tzeentch Chosen, or have them on all sorts of Discs of Tzeentch, counting as Raptors, thus requiring a bolt pistol...

What do you think I should do? I guess the Fast Attack choices are quite hard to fill, so that's tempting, but I prefer the look with boltguns...

Oh, you want pics first? Ok, here they are :

    General view:

Details on the legs : some jewels & and tortured face are embedded in the shin plates. Anyone has tips on how to avoid making it crappy?

The symbol of Tzeentch on his shoulder pad, the only thing I seemed to get right with GS :

An overgrown eye, gift of the Watcher of Ways :

The original aim was to try and recreate the grotesque mutations of the 90's Chaos Warriors, helped with the new Horrors kits, Possessed bits & a bit of GS... What could I do to further that feeling?
Next one has a lot more Possessed parts in it, and was built as if running while shooting his boltgun from the hip... Maybe some pics later!

  • Marine Swap :

At last, I begun painting the Marine which is supposed to join Gitsplitta's Mantis Warriors in their crusade for redemption...

Here's the progress so far :

Not much, I admit, but that's a start!

  • Cheers,

I really like that plague marine - I must have missed it first time round. The colours are nice and bright - It stands out. And tenzeatch marine dude looks great too. embedded heads look good but its hard to tell before they are painted. But I do love tenzeetch style marines so do it!

I hink the plague marine looks ace, also a nice touch with the green light from the boltgun. I think raptors would be great, they really are a handy unit imho, so I say go for it.

The plague marine looks incredible. I love the colors, and the face. Very creepy, very characterful.
And the work so far on the Tzeentch marine looks very promising. Very fine work on the greenstuff, particularly that Tzeentch emblem.

@ Rose_Mountainz, weetyskemian44 : Thanks for the kind words! I don't have much experience with Tzeentch troops or Raptors, so I guess I'll give them a try!

@ tinfoil : Thank you very much !! I'm a total fan of your master-crafted Harrowed , so I'm looking up to your comments!!!

    Updates :

Well, not much of an update, but...

Great job on the Plague Marine, I really like all the importance you give to details (the bolter, the backpack, etc...) and the general mood of decay (that unfortunately most of the plague marines conversions don't reach).

Concerning you Tzeentch CSM I'd say this : GO FOR THE FETHING DISCS!!!
It's a very promising conversion. I like the mutations, but I think they might look even better if you give the GS around a smooth aspect (rather than the warped flesh) as if it was a natural part of the armor.

I don't know if you'll be interested, but here's the tuto I've made for robed CSMs:
    http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/307974.page

PS: I don't own Possesed frying pans, but my fridge gives access to the warp, you put something in it, it disappears, and when you've forgotten about it, it reappears!

Ok, ok, I'll go for Raptors!!! Too bad I cannot find a good way to make legal Tzeentch CSMs ON discs WITH Boltguns...

As for the GS... That was the aim, actually... Just couldn't pull it out!

@Psychosis PC, Element206 : Thanks for the comments! I have trimmed some more Skavens, so will begin my other regiment... in a month or two!

    UPDATES :

Worked a bit on Gitsplitta's Marine for the Great Marine Swap ; here are a few WIP pics :

I'm really glad with the colour scheme, I think it looks quite unusual... My GF prefers the Necron Abyss / Enchanted Blue / Ice Blue way for the contrasting colour, while I prefer the Necron Abyss / Hawk Turquoise / Hawk Turquoise + Bleached Bone path...

As for now he's still at the Necron Abyss state, so what do you think? I'm not saying I'll change my mind, but I'd like some feedback (plus she'd be glad to hear Dakkaites are siding with her!)
For comparison, check a few posts upwards, youh have the arm with boltgun in the Turquoise way...

    Thanks for looking!

Well, nice paintjob on this marine, how did you paint the armour (bleached bone + wash or Skull white + wash, and which wash did you use?). I like the Turquoise option for the blue elements, but you're Girlfriend's proposal seems interesting, do you have any pics to make a comparaison?

Concerning your GS problem, I'm absolutely sure you have the required skills, it's probably just a matter of tools; what tools do you use to work GS?

Well, you were quite close, it's Dheneb Stone + thinned down & controlled Devlan Mud washes... + Highlights in Dheneb Stone.

I tried White + Wash for some of my Plague Monks, but was annoyed with the highlights as white was too light and the other colours (Dheneb, Bleached, Rotting Flesh) didn't match the tone...

As for the blue, I guess it would look pretty much the same as these pics, only with some more highlights...

By the way, _Tim?, the fading on the knee-pad is just a result of the lighting coming from the right... Lol!

On another subject, I have a pic in my gallery which seems to be about to steal the front view :

    Da Giggling Punkie Nurgling!

So, would you guys mind voting for him, so that I can know if he really looks better, in 2 hours of painting, than my time-consuming, almost-winning High Elf Sea Guard?

Keep the GS really wet and use either a modeling scalpel or clay working tool (also keep wet) to work the GS slowly and patiently in ONE DIRECTION. You'll get a smoother join and the crud will be easy to trim away. I like the way you are using trimmed plastic for details, do the same thing myself due to lack of GS detailing skill.

@ Hyenajoe : Sorry I forgot answering your question about sculpting tools!

    @ Hyenajoe & agroszkiewicz

I mainly use some things close to dentist tools, though I don't remember where I got them nor when (and I don't think they are dentist tools!). I bought a clay shaper at a local garden & animals & creative arts store, but the smallest they had is still too large for use with the minis...
I guess I'll have to organise a "hobby raid" in Paris soon...

I tried to soften the GS edges today, but it appears they are in places hard to reach, so I guess I'll have no choice but to leave them like this... This one was a test mini anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter much.

Hyenajoe, your tutorial also made me realize the problem with CSM front torsos on Dark Angels Vets bodies : they should have some clothes overlapping on the front armour!! So this one will definitely be a test mini

@ neil101 : thanks! I used Bolter & Chainsword's painting simulator to get the paint scheme... It was the second time I used it, and it's really simple & good-looking! Too bad they didn't keep the gear simulator with the latest version... It forces you to swap between v5 & v9 to get the GW colours (featured in v9) on the additional gear (v5)...

Here are a few results :

    UPDATES :

So, the first battle-brother of the Reavers of Tears chapter is now complete (well, at least on my side... Gitsplitta still has to add the DW shoulder pad + basing).

    Let me introduce...

Brother Tanaerum, Megaera Battle-Company, currently under Inquisitorial operational control [Ref. Delta49/Inq/O_Heret./BDB_WAR/MNTS_WRS - Req. clearance Omega-4]

I enjoyed trying some new techniques & details, especially a lot of Object Source Lighting (on every button, cablings & lens available lol) & tiny writings on the armour plates & purity seals... I'm sad I didn't get the large writings right, but it seems I'm cursed whenever I try to write something on a mini... It works nicely on a sheet of paper for the test, and then gets screwed when applied to the mini... *sob* *sob*

I still have to work more on the fluff for the chapter, expect some more when I get back in 2 weeks !!!

Absolutely no criticism of the painting. Top Notch! Unfortunately i do have a gripe; 'Reaver of tears', 'Reavers of tears' (or 'river of tears' in an inspector Clueseau voice) it is a horrible name, It doesn't work, sounds like a tongue twister. Not to mention it is a bit morrisey. It reminds me of 'assassins of kings' it doesnt sound right. Adjective/verb Noun is a better formula for chapter names. Demonstration: Nascent Furies, Rampant Tigers, Furious Spears, Enduring Blades, Angry Marines, Priapic Stallions etc.... You can't have Nascent Furies though, Hands off.

I'm inclined to agree with Perkustin. I have to say when I see this lot I instantly think "Weeping Angels"; has nice overtones of BA, Lamenters and a splash of deeply-scary Dr. Who critter... It acutally makes me want to go and buy a box of Sang Guard just to paint as such!

    Priapic Stallions, really?!? Lol...

Ok, you & Graven have it right : I agree the name's not that good, but I couldn't find any other that would fit, & I liked the play on words (River / Reaver)...

But since you two pointed it out, I won't be able to keep on behaving like I didn't know there's a problem...

I'm not too keen on the angelic iconographies, so I'd like to avoid Angels in the name...

How about Weeping Reavers? I'm not sure "verbs+ing" fit well in chapter names either...

    UPDATES :

Nothing much, but two concept minis for some Tzeentch CSMs...

  • Concept 1 :

Some CSM legs, a Horror torso/head, et voilà!!!! I plan on GSing the joints between the CSM & Horror parts, but I don't know how to do it...

Honestly, it looked better in my mind than when I see it partly-built...
What you guys think? Should I scrap it off, get away with it, or try harder??

Though not that good, I really think there is something to be done here, so I'd really appreciate suggestions, criticisms, ideas, that would help me in making it good!

  • Concept 2 :

This time I'm much happier with it, it looks less mutated than the two previous ones, but creepy nonetheless...

    Your opinion?

  • Marine Swap :

Gitsplitta : would you prefer me leaving him as is, or at least glue him on a base?

  • Reavers of Tears :

Ok, after a bit of Wikying (yes, that verb does exist ), I found some piece of interesting fluff about a greek deity called Achlys...

Wikipedia wrote:In Greek mythology, Achlys (Greek language: Ἀχλύς "mist") was, according to some ancient cosmogonies, the eternal Night (perhaps the Mist of Death, which clouded the eyes of the dying). According to Hesiod, she was the personification of misery and sadness, a daughter of Nyx (Night) and as such she was represented on the shield of Heracles: pale, emaciated, and weeping, with chattering teeth, swollen knees, long nails on her fingers, bloody cheeks, and her shoulders thickly covered with dust. If the former is true, then she may have been numbered amongst the Keres.

That seems to be tragic enough for me!!! So, what do you guys think of "Achlysian Reavers" as a chapter name?!?

  • On a side note, I'll be updating my renegade IG thread shortly, so feel free to have a look !!

Have you thought about GSing flames or swirly bits to join the SM torso and Horror face? It is Tzeentch after all, you could make a bunch of little GS arms or anything really... but my vote goes to flames.

Of course, the first one might be better as a horror, rather than a SM, or the changeling in a unit of horrors.

Erh, he's completely painted by now... As in... covered with a white undercoat lol...

I'm still debating about the colour scheme, I don't want the classic blue & pink & yellow... So I've thought about these two :

The first one would be really dark, and a good reason to max out the OSL on it (the crystals on his right shin, some glowing soft armour, eyes, etc...).

The second one would tie them more to the Achlysian Reavers, which is something I am currently pondering as to the fluff...

    What do you guys think?

I like both of your modeling concepts, N°1 is a great idea (it reminds me of an old RT model), yet I suggest you should replace the horror face by a non-beaky one. Do you have other pics of this model?

N°2 is just chaotic awesomeness, nothing to say (except: great job ).

I prefer the first coulour scheme (yay for the pink bolter!!!)

As I mentioned at one point in the blog, I was actually trying to get the feel of those long-forgotten Chaos Warriors (except maybe, by weetyskemian44 lol) that I really love...

Actually, I used the beaky head because they're the ones I like the least, so I didn't want to waste a good head on something that might not work lol...

And I don't have other pics, but if I'm not too lazy I'll try and work a bit on him tonight or tomorrow...

Ha ha, actually I went for a pink boltgun as a mini-joke, but... If you think it's nice... Maybe I'll really paint it that way!!!

Sorry moonshine, I've begun painting it with the left scheme...

I apologize in advance, the lighting was very poor when I took the picture... I hope it shows nevertheless!

I've tried to emphasize the OSL details, though you cannot see it much here...

I also had a hard time blending the organic parts into the armour, but I think the transition's not that bad...

Ok, I told you I would get to it... I [tried to] follow you idea, ie. sculpting flames, but it's not that easy AT ALL!!!

    Here's the awfulness:

The addition of a right CSM arm with boltgun adds a good lot to it though, IMHO...

Also worthy of note, at least, to me, is I have finally managed to solve something that has bothered me for years : the GW minis always have their finger on the trigger!!!

Indeed, most soldiers nowadays are trained in leaving that forefinger along the gun, to avoid any mishap... Even if about to shoot (see pic 1 below), one of the last things you do is put your finger on the trigger...

Being a soldier myself, this is of the highest importance to me... And has annoyed me for far too long.

So, from now on, I WILL greenstuff those damn fingers as they should be !!!

    Here's the proof :

Now, I still have some work to do on my GS skills, I now, but I hope you get the point...

Last update, I took some better pics of the current PiP :

I humbly think I made some progress with OSL...
I still need to work on the highlights, and of course paint his arm with bolt pistol (pic above), before trying to strap him on a Disc...

As for the CSM/Horror, does it look better that way?

The Good Green, were you thinking of that when you mentioned GSed flames?

I love the PiP Tzeentch marine. The conversion is great -- really creepy looking (especially that eye). And the painting is nicely blended. Maybe you could add even brighter, more extreme highlights? Either way, well done, so far!

Sculpting flames is not easy but you did quite well. The model looks really better this way.

Your tzeentchian marine looks really great (no need to be humble at this point, you can burst with pride ), I'm really curious to see the discs you're going to make.

Yes, sure... I guess those situations look even funnier when you're on the Evil Side (tm) :

Poor Marvin... He'll never have the chance to have an opinion again, only due to that finger thing...

I'm also pretty positive the genetically-engineered Space Marines are immune to stress-clenching, and to all those kinds of reflexes we, mere human, have...
So I guess they could spend days with their fingers on the trigger, chatting, smoking cigarettes, running, stumbling, getting shot at, even dancing (who knows?), without ever firing it by mistake...

    Still, it bothers me, lol..

    And thanks!

Don't be so hard on yourself, the flames look great. Compare them to the flames on the horror hand. There is much more detail in yours. It looks great, and the trigger finger is a very interesting detail for a CSM. I hope you try to highlight in in the paint job... maybe make the gun a contrasting color to the glove.

In movies they always make mistakes with the "no-trigger finger" but then again when you can shoot 50 rounds out of a 30 round magazine what diffrence does that make

    @weetyskemian44 / btemple0 :

Actually, most of the recent films / shows depicting special units (SWAT, Special-ops capable units, etc...) have adapted the postures to that no-trigger finger rule.. Hopefully, for my GF was sick of hearing me whining about "hey, see that guy with the G36? - the what? - Come on, the G36, that assault rifle I've shown you multiple times already!!! - Oh, you mean that black rifle here? So what? - The guy's got his ****ing forefinger on the trigger I repeat rule number 3 : 'Always keep your forefinger away from the trigger as long as the iron sights aren't on the objective'!!!!"

It sometimes led to some arguments at home, as you can guess... Of course, she's more after films with Meg Ryan, rather than action films, but she's gotten used to it after all...

And yeah, btemple, you're right... It also annoys me when they fire endless burst of bullets with their guns... IIRC, John Woo once told about one of his film he had utterly cast away the concept of finite magazines, so that no pause would break the infernal rythm of the firefight scenes... Phewwww... At least, he admits it...

    @ Skalk, TGGGW (!), monkeytroll :

Thanks for the flames!! I just undercoated it, I'll go to paint him just after this post!!! Maybe some updates tonight?!?

    @ inmygravenimage, Rose_Mountainz, jackanory :

Thanks for the support!!!! I'm amazed at how OSL is easy to pull off, actually... Just some heavily watered-down paint spread around the ligh source, and voilà!!! For those who are afraid of OSL (as I was before I tried it for the second time on Brother Tanaerum), just throw yourself into it!! Worst case, you'll have to redo the basecoat + highlights on that small area...

    So, here is.... UPDATE TIME!!!

Dyathor-Phakr, Scourge of the Nine Planes

And a detail pic to show TGG I tried to follow his advice (is that the second time already?!? I'm getting impressionable lol)

The Good Green wrote: It looks great, and the trigger finger is a very interesting detail for a CSM. I hope you try to highlight in in the paint job... maybe make the gun a contrasting color to the glove.

The green OSL is focused on the finger, I hope that makes it stand out enough!!!

So, the paint is over with the mini... I just have to find a good solution for its disc of Tzeentch... I'll try to post my crazy ideas later. As this was really a stroke of creativity, I had had some daring ideas, but now the mini is painted, I just don't want to waste it with a ridiculous
    mount!!!
Of course, any suggestions / pics are welcome...

And I'm currently facing a wall regarding how to base my future minis... As you may have noticed, most of them aren't based, for I'd like to find something I could use for my 40k armies I'll be building (CSM / Traitor Guard / SM, eventually)... Money isn't really the issue, but I cannot find some resin bases that suit me... And I'd like something a bit more elaborate than sand + static grass, even though I like the way I manage to paint the grass... The settings I'd like to use is a mix of desert & urban battleground... As you could guess from a planet that has been at war for centuries...
Same conclusion, if anyone has some nice ideas / pics about basing...

Thanks in advance for your contributions!

[EDIT : Hyenajoe, see, I painted the bolt pistol in pink!!!]

Concerning your bases, have you considered using GW's basing kit? It's quite good and not too expensive. I've used it for many bases and the result is quite efficient.

    Sure!!

As promised, here are some pics of the Horror / CSM, paint in progress...

Progress so far is only basecoat + washes, but something's wrong with it : the trims on the leg armour...

On the previous one, I had managed to keep them in the same colour, but on this one the legs look bad...

And I'm pretty stuck in here, for I don't want to add another colour to the scheme, but cannot find any that would suit the trims.

My best bet is Hawk Turquoise, as it will match the flames on the torso, but I'm not sure...

    Any help?

I like the finger idea too it true we are trained to keep the finger off the trigger it awesome green stuff for so small a thing. Even a CSM would keep it up after all there still in there some were, all but krone of course, after training to do so for 200 to 10,000 years of war fare I thing it stick in there heads. So it works for me

Thank you guys for the support!!! (Especially for those who support the "no-tringer finger" thingy )

It really pushes me onwards, and keeps me motivated!!! (It also helps me to overcome my addiction to XBOX lol)

    Only few updates for now...

  • Marine Swap :

Sent Gitsplitta's brother Tanaerum last weekend, so I can now build another one...

Here's the second Achlysian Reaver, he'll be joining Tib's forces as soon as done... His DW squad had a need for a flamer specialist, here it is!!

His name will probably relate to a sun or daylight deity, such as Eos, Helios or Hemera... I'm still digging it!!

  • Tzeentch Discs :

As for the "things" I had intended to use as Tzeentch Discs for my Tzeentchian Raptors... I'd like to catch the original feel of the OOP Discs, such as these ones :

And below are the ones I had felt would match... But I'm not sure anymore ...

What do you guys think of them?

Should I use them as is? Paint them? Add a few GS details (eyes, flames, etc..)????
I really need some advice, or else get stuck for lack of other ideas...

My only other options is a mechanized one, with cut out DE Hellion boards... But I'm not really sure about them...

Just let your crazy ideas flow, Tzeentch is the Changer of Ways after all, his Discs can take all sorts of shape!!!

  • Random, useless ramblings :

Just wanted to let you know, I bought a small "bitz box" in a DIY, I think it will help me alot (but it's already full - pic was taken a few days ago ) in sorting out my hoard of bitz, and I will most probably buy 1 or 2 others!!!

  • Thanks for taking a look!

Great idea those buttons, really! You're right to think that a variety of discs looks far better than a single disc scheme.
I agree with tinfoil on the and other posters that some GSing would be welcome (just small elements, the buttons are already great as discs).

Why asking if you should paint them? You know we're expecting you to paint them! You're a great painter and we're always looking for new paintjob from you .

Buttons are all really pretty - but You should paint them otherwise they might look a little too much like buttons. My favourite is the squiggly purple one - nice. The one with the sortof crocodile skin / snake skin pattern looks very nice (do slaneesh ride discs?) In fact they are all great and will no doubt be better as discs of tenzeetch than they where as buttons

The bottom left and right disks look best, they remind me most or WAR characters disk in some way shape or form, and its not like you cannot ad some GS to add an icon or something similar to the surface of the disk.

@ neil101 : you got pics of your belt buckle?!? This could be an interesting way to go...

@ Rose_Mountainz : yeah, I could do that, but 1. my GS skills are really sketchy, and I don't see myself having good results on large areas, and 2. this would take too much time!!! But, maybe I'll do a plain one with only writings on it, as on Dyathor-Phakr's right shoulder pad... That could be an idea!

@ wib : And I am soooo jealous of your drawing skills!!! I swept through your deviantart page, I'm amazed at those pieces of art displayed... And thx for the finger support!!
You didn't comment on the Marine I'm building for you : do you want to change some things? Or can I start priming & painting?

@ sageheart : Thanks mate... At first I didn't know how the paint scheme would become lol...

@ Hyenajoe : I'm asking about whether to paint them, since I think I'll lose some details if I paint them... But, yeah, I guess it'll look too weird if I don't...

@ all others : Thanks for the support on the buttons... I'm not really convinced anymore, but since it seems to be okay with you, I'll have to try it... Maybe this week!

    UPDATE :

Well; no pics today, but I've been working a bit on the Horror CSM...

As I had no other suggestions, I tried painting the greaves & forearm in a dirty white-yellowish, and covered them with dark blue unholy writings, as on Dyathor-Phakr's shoulder pad... It's turning out quite well, actually...

I also finished the highlights on the flames & brown armour, next thing to do is highlight the skin, boltgun, and paint the backpack... I hope I'll be able to do that tomorrow!!!

    Thanks again,

Thanks, MajorTom11, I'm honoured to count you as my readers!!!

    UPDATE :

I finished most of the CSM Horror today, I just have to paint & glue his backpack, base him, and he'll be done!!!

Well, considering my lightning-speed modelling skills, that should be 3-4 hours of work...

    Here are the pics :

I'm especially happy with all the writings on the greaves, shoulder pad and forearm...

But I think there's a problem with the tongue, but I cannot seem to point it out... Any help?!?

[edit: oh, and to those who supported me in my sculpting the flames, I still think the ones on his left arm (from the Horror kit) look better than mine!!]

That horror conversion is coming along awesomely! I agree that the writings on the armor plates came out great. For the tongue, mixing your primary color (that red tone) with some white to make a little bit of pink would help, i think. Just don't use too much pink or you may end up with a very light colored tongue, pulling away the focus of the mini straight to the tongue. I would maybe also try some mottling to add some tiny dots all over it, especially along the sides of the tongue, leaving the deeper center darker. No more than 3 shades of dots would be needed. If you go with the mottled effect than, I would ignore any further highlights and just add the dots. I believe this would add some texture and depth to the tongue, making it a little bit creepier as chaos should be.

Don't forget the veins! Look at the underside of your tongue. There should be a huge purple vein running the length of it. Also, a slightly darker red on the underside, with Moltar's suggestion on the top at any rate. Great technique by the way, Moltar.

That writing on the greaves is some of the best i have seen ! as for the tongue i agree with the good green and maybe add a blues purple tinge , and a little gloss for that wet look.

The Good Green makes a good point. With that tongue being as big/long as it is, adding some realism to the underside is a good call

Thanks monkeytroll, it's not that hard really...

    - The background is Charadon Granite (same as armour), Graveyard Earth, then Dheneb Stone, with a few washes (Gryphonne & Devlan, with a bit of OOP Yellow Ink)..
    - The writings are with highly watered down Necron Abyss, and a small brush... and patience

    UPDATES :

  • Tzeentch Horror CSM :

The painting is finished!!! I don't know why the backpack doesn't want to be of the same brown as the power armour, but still...

The pic doesn't show the tongue that well, but I swear there are a billion hand-brushed dots on its surface!!!

I tried to make the center of the backpack as if the light wasn't of the same strength depending on the direction, but I think I still have to improve that... [Is that sentence even grammatically correct? Understandable, at least?]

  • Custom bases !!!!

After a long period of over-thinking, postponing & procrastinating (who said "we are a simple people, easily startled..." ?), I eventually set myself onto trying to build some custom bases... Which is one of the reason I won't finish most of my models (see my Tranch renegades thread) : it seems the Muse of Bases is definitely toying with me, ie. I have no inspiration when it comes to building some nice, custom bases, and as a result I'm quite awed by that "daunting" task...

Still, today, I went for a few trials, and here is what I got (yes, 3 in a row, so awesome... )

[Before any bad comment appears, the yellow things on the left-top one are "blue tac" drops I used to prevent the undercoat from getting on where the feet of my horrors will be...]

As Hyenajoe had encouraged me to do, I tried using the 40k basing kit, and the tiny slates are really nice to use...
For the sand / mud effect I used some kind of sealing plaster, left over from when we refurbished / redid the kitchen...
Added with some styrene tiled floor & girder, a small fence, plus a few patches of grass...

My intent was to illustrate a ruined, urban environment who had been forsaken for so long (or had known nothing but war for so long), that Nature was beginning to claim it back, hence the overlapping sand & grass patches...

What do you think of that? Am I on the right track? What could I add / remove / change to capture that feeling better?

  • Thanks in advance,

P.S : Don't tell Father Nurgle, but it seems if you look at the last picture upside down, you'll notice something...

Your color choices are really something special, honestly. The pallete and application are ridiculously smooth, and you have blended extremely vivid color with dusky earthtones, which can be really difficult to pull off. Well, the second paragraph just denies your first sentence... You have an artistic sensitiveness that allows you to analyze thoroughly what you are seeing, and I envy you for that...

As for the tutorials / step by steps, I don't have any, except maybe for the High Elf, of whom I took a lot of pics! But if you have any question, feel free to ask, I'll try my best to answer them, with my limited technical vocabulary & perception.

@monkeytroll - Thanks! It's been hard to commit to building bases, so your comment is warming!

@MajorTom11 - Wow, that's some nice French for a non-native speaker!!! And though there are indeed a few grammar / spelling mistakes, everything is perfectly understandable!!
You even used a word I haven't seen for... ages (?) : "versatilité" (same as in english lol).

As for the 'recipe' for the "white" on the SM, I suppose you're asking about the bone-ish colour on the Achlysian Reaver armour?

Actually, it's a simple Dheneb Stone basecoat on a white undercoat, with 1 or 2 thin layers of Gryphonne Sepia, highlighted with Dheneb Stone then Bleached Bone for the lightest edges. Did I eve mention I loved the GW washes?

@weetyskemian44 - Good luck with your shopping! Bring your GF/wife/loved half along, she might be of use for that endeavour!!!

@moonshine - Erh... That's very kind of you, but, ... No. I'm still galaxies away from the Golden Daemon standards, if only for my lack of art background / understanding of colour theory / etc... But I appreciate your praise, thanks!

    UPDATE :

Foreword : This will probably be the last update before next year, as I'll be really busy from tomorrow, until New Year's Eve...
    23-24 : Xmas at home with my GF's maternal side ;
    25 : Xmas at my mum's home ;
    26 : 1 day of train travel to my GF's paternal side, all the way across France (1000km...), then Xmas there ;
    30 : Way back home, shopping for New Year's Eve ;
31 : New Year's Eve at home, with a few friends...
Am I the only one who's beginning to get sick of those social rituals?!? Or am I slowly descending the path to psychosocial, outcast and hermit?
    [end useless rambling]

  • Tzeentch CSM Horror :

Here is, at last, G'chaaclethu the Ancient, Warden of the Porphyr Library.

For those who are interested in tongues (you know who you are), here's a close-up (maybe a little too close ), with small dots & stuff.

  • Custom Bases :

I also painted the other bases yesterday, *mostly* with washes... What do you think?

It almost makes me feel like I could go back to my Tranch renegades models... As the project had stalled more or less due to my inability to build some decent bases, I guess that time is over now...

  • Thanks for the support... For those of you I won't get in touch with, may you spend some nice winter holidays, enjoy your Xmas, and happy new year!!

@ weety : well, I guess you English people think that when you master 5 or 6 words in French [including "shut up"], that's about all there is to know of that poor language, hence the A grade

@ monkeytroll : Yeah, ok, the trim is in Graveyard Earth (non-wash) of course, but the rest is all with washes... Devlan on all the base, then multiple washes of :
    - Gryphonne Sepia for the sand (adds a yellowish hue) ;
    - Badab Black for the stones (makes them grayish) ;
    - Erh... ah, thanks for pointing that out, the grass is painted with regular colours as well (why did I have to brag about with my washes, uh?!? Now you're making me feel bad!), ie. Catachan Green, then Camo Green, then Bubonic Brown. Usually I use Snot Green / Scorpion Green / Sunburst Yellow, but I wanted to try and show grass burnt by noxious gases...

So I guess I should've said "two thirds of the base (sand, stone) are painted with washes only, the other half (trim, grass) with regular paints".

[edit : when looking again at the bases, it seems I forgot about the rusted thingies as well...

edit: Umm, that was just me being me then with the French, wasn't trying to jump on the bandwagon or anything - I can only add a few more words to that and that's my total vocabulary - you pretty much hit the nail on the head with your comment about English and other languages - we're pretty crap at being anything other than mono-lingual.

No worries, your French came well lol... As for the languages, I can understand why English people (in general) aren't that skilled with foreign languages : you don't need it, as yours is the most spoken one (besides chinese, well, but the matter's different). Whereas we French usually suck at other languages as well, but we don't have the excuse of our language being spoken by 70% of the world... Even though, for an odd reason, French is supposedly the official language in the UN.

I guess that's easier with a dictionary, but the main difficulties in learning languages is often the grammar, so I guess you had a bit of that to get your A...

As for the buttons... Well, maybe next year!?

@ graven : well, if you ever want to practice French again, just let me know!!

@ weety : Nah, sorry... It's been a few years since smoking has been banned from all public places : railway stations, restaurants, town halls, AND bars...
I'm not a smoker myself, but when the law was argued upon, I had thought it'd be sad to see all those places smokeless... But now it's well-accepted, people just smoke outside (and get to know other smokers they'd have never talked with otherwise), bartenders bought some electrical, outside heater, and most of all, our clothes don't stink like ashtrays for days!!!

I'm just coming back from holidays and what do I see? The horror marine fully painted?

Great paintjob Yggs, as usual, and I notice that you've done very well with the basing kit, those bases are great (nice use of plastic card as well, I should use it more often myself)

I hope you're all enjoying your holidays (and that you're not among the poor chaps trapped by the snow!)

I'm not a smoker, but I also miss the days when my friends weren't obliged to get out of the bar every 10 min, and the mixed smell of spilled beer and cold smoke...all my youth.
I agree that for an unexplainable reason, most of the French really suck at other languages. (Part of being the center of the world I guess; we don't need to learn the awful languages of the lower cultures -or a fantasy of this kind )

@ Git : Thanks!! I just hope the New Year will bring a new Astartes brother under your command, and that both French & US mails didn't lost him in the warp...

@ Saintspirit : Actually, I didn't like the Horrors much as well, but hey, they're plastic, they have some nice arms & a great icon for conversions, so why not give it a go, if only for mutated CSMs???

@ btemple0 : Well, you know, there are other things worth visiting in France, some US monuments are scattered all over the territory...

Some for WWI, for instance "La butte de Montsec" (or the "Drymount Hill"?), which is a magnificent monument :

    http://www.linternaute.com/sortir/magazine/photo/les-departements-francais-vus-du-ciel/image/meuse-234444.jpg

But most stand for WWII, I have to admit...

Nevertheless, there are a lot to see in addition to war monuments, you know? I guess it'd be as if we limited the US to the Grand Canyon & the Washington Monument; that'd be a bit narrow, don't you think?

@ Sageheart : yeah, smokers will have to make do, uh... Anyway, when I see the price of a pack, I'm just glad I avoiding this bane...

@ Hyenajoe : Ha ha, my GF was still working on the week before Xmas, so I had a bit of time to finish him / it indeed!!! I'm glad you like the base, your praise of the Basing Kit is one of the things that helped me get some motivation, so I thank you!!!

@ PPC : thanks for the support... Go ahead with stealing the idea, it's quite hard to mix the two kits (hence the massive amount of GSed flames to cover everything up, but it's doable!!!)

    UPDATES :

Hey, I guess this one will be my 1000th post... Things have gone faster lately, probably due to the massive amount of holidays I had these last two months... Still, tomorrow will be my last day, so I'll have to enjoy every moment!!!

  • Marine Swap :

I have begun painting TiB's flamer Astartes... I think he'll be a bit darker than Git's one, for I thought it was Devlan Mud I had used as a wash, whereas it was probably Gryphonne Sepia instead... Well, we'll see...

    TiB's PIP Marine

    How does it look?

  • Skavens :

In the 12-ish hours I spent in trains lately, I've had some time to build a few Skaven slaves, and try to get creative with some Night Runners...

    - Some random Slaves, out of IoB kits :

Slave unit - First four slaves

    - The unit leader, who required a bit more work : I managed to cut off his head without damaging anything, and swapped it for a Plague Monk head, which I hope will help tie the unit with my Pestilen-affiliated army. I also fitted him with a barbed whip, to show his status as the enforcer (though its stats don't show, only +1A, but still CC2 / Cd2 lol...):

    Slave unit - Leader

    - As part of this army is unpredictable, I also wanted to emphasize this by modelling a disguised Assassin in every unit that is allowed to contain one... Of course, he'll be recognizable for those who pay attention, and for those who don't, I'll be sure to show them beforehands : "See that guy over there with a slightly darker robe? Yeah, he's got a stabbing knife, pouches, gear... He could be an Assassin!" That's what I call psychological warfare in WHFB!! (He also got a head swap for a Plague Monk head ha ha)

    Slave unit - Disguised Assassin

    - The first four ninjas for Night Runner units : based on Plague Monk bodies for coherency, most of them with Night Runner weapons / heads / gear for visual reference to the Eshin warriors, and some other, fancy weapons to show their "special ops-capable" status (my GF said : "Ninja Turtles" ) :

From left to right : Dual claws / Sword & "Pickaxe" (is that how it's called? In French it's "Bec-de-Corbin" / Long blade / Claw & Shuriken.

Last guy of the 5 will get a doubled-whip & knife, and all of them will soon get some more gear, grapple, whips, knives, pouches, etc...
Has anyone got a suggestion? Do they look like Night Runners enough, or am I completely on the wrong way?

  • That's about all for today...

I'd like to thank those of you Dakkaites who managed to stand my ramblings for those 1000 posts, and wish you a happy year 2011, filled with modelling, painting & gaming!

    Cheers,

    Yggdrasil

    Ok, thanks guys!!!!

Worked a bit on the Night Runners yesterday evening (while "watching" a girly movie), and finally settled on a swampy environment for my Skavens.

So I imagined my Night Runners would likely use all the pontoons & footbridges available to infiltrate in better conditions, and have a better view over the battlefield...

Here's a first shot, I intend to add a few rocks & branches this evening :

    Some perched Night Runners

Of course, this setting is also a good way to try and use the GW Artificial Water, which I'll want murky & full of dead things

    Is it better?

Lol not familiar enough with the base plastics to comment much on the conversions, although they look nice! I do love me some skaven, and I know enough to know non-giant hand sharpface gutter-runners require a bit of work! I will however have plenty of excitement and stuff to say on the paint stages though, these guys are really versatile in that they can support a pretty low end paintjob and still look good, but, in skilled hands like yours, they can be taken to a completely different level.

    Looking forward to seeing more!

@ graven : What do you mean by "basing slut"? Do you I understand that's one of your knacks? Anyway, thanks!

@ MajorTom : Thanks, but given how people vote on my already painted Skavens (->see for yourself), I'm not so sure about this "different level" lol...

Still, your comments are always warming uh...

@ monkeytroll : thank you as well! As for the Water... It's going to be the first time I'll be experimenting with it (except on the tongue of a Daemonette's horn), so don't expect miracles in here!!!

By the way, I'd welcome any advice regarding the use of GW Water... What's best for a swamp?

A few questions, a bit naive maybe :

    - is it better to paint the bottom of the water and apply it pure, or mix paint with it?
    - how to surround it so that you can "pour" it, in order to achieve a feeling of depth?
    - can it stand being varnished?
    - how long for it to cure?

As today was my last day of vacation, I took time to finish TiB's Flamer Marine, who I think is a bit below Gits' one, for some unknown reason... But I'm still really happy with him! No pic until when I have some nice natural light, for otherwise it'd screw everything!!

And this evening, during another "girly" movie, I went on with adding some Dryad branches on the Skaven bases to begin the "swamp effect"... I now have to look for a skeleton or zombie torso that will float on the surface, and maybe tomorrow you'll have pics!!!

    Thanks again,

    Hmm, took a look.

I think the problem might be that you are rocking too many similar tones on them. I.e - if you turned the picture black and white, it would look a bit like the it was a white primered mini with a badab black wash.

You don't have the problem in your other works because you have strong color contrasts.

My advice would be to darken up the robes, or, alternately, the skavens fur/skin. I bet a nice deep burgundy red, forest green or charcoal gray would work really nicely. You would still be able to use your wash technique, but could use a combination of blacks/sienna and then a contrast color to add depth... like red in the recesses of the green, and blue in the recesses of red. A dash of pink wash on the nose/cheeks would also be very striking on the otherwise large tan/skin areas. What do you think?

I don't care what the votes say, still think they are pretty good bro!

Man... I miss painting. MUST. FINISH. SCULPTING. HYBRIDS.

For water effects I have heard that masking tape is great for making a removable surround for pouring the water effects into, I have also had good results from adding paint to doming resin which I think is similar to water effects, I believe that water effects can take awhile to cure though.

    @ MajorTom :

Ha, as usual you manage to put words on things my mind doesn't even manage to grasp...

Very helpful though. Actually the goal was to try and use mainly washes on Dheneb Stone-basecoated minis, but I can still improve, I guess!!
I wanted to have the robes look like they could have been of a light tone (maybe cream, or even white) at one point, but were now so ragged & dirty & pus-stained that they were closer to a light brown...

So I guess I should rather go to a darkening of the skin?

And I definitely need to try that "depth" thing, with red over green, or blue over red... You've already tried to explain that to me once, but it still won't come!

Why can't you paint? Is it because you don't have any ready mini?

    @ BH & MajorTom :

thanks for the little tricks for water, I guess I'll have to find some masking tape somewhere... I also had thought I could literally "pour" the water once the shape was made, I would not have imagined you had to do it in thin layers! Probably helped me save one or two minis
BH : What is "doming" resin?

    @ lifeofshan :

Thanks! As for the "girly movies", it's the deal we have with my GF, so I'm pretty happy with it : she lets me "build my things" while she watches her film, which :
    1. gives me more time for the Hobby, without much reproach from her,
    2. allows me to avoid most of the movie's plot (I'm not a huge TV fan),
    3. allows me to make fun of her when the scenario's really too dumb / simple / romantic (you know, the usual "First they meet, then they love each other, then "something gets wrong" (tm) (ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, wife learns about mistress, job transfer, family problems), then they split, and in the end, they love each other again" )!

    So that's a win-win for us...

    UPDATES :

As mentioned previously, I've done a bit of work on the Night Runner bases (sorry, poor lighting again, and I cannot seem to get it right with my lamps) :

(Yes, that's a leg on the 3rd one lol)

And also built the last of that 5-rat squad, along with the back of the leader's base (a forest spirit is trying to hide behind the branches!) :

Maybe the last one is the least Ninja-ey of the 5, but I don't really know how to improve that... I've added a few accessories to his buddies, I'll try and see if that works too here! He'll be getting his stilts as well, don't worry!!

    http://www.miniaturementor.com/painting_tutorials.html

Advanced tutorials 1, for 20 bucks, a lot of great info! It has a lot of very clear demos on multi-tonal painting, including skin and robes!

As for me, I have my Space Hulk:Complete project I've been on for over a year now. I started painting the NMM dantenator, but then I received some hybrids I had commisioned based on my prototypes, and did some more work on those one's... Then I decided to finish all the sculpting/modelling so I could focus on painting, but unfortunately for me lol, that involved an additional 50%+ sculpting on 11 more 4th generation hybrids, touch ups on the 1st, 2nd and3rd generation ones etc etc... I am getting close to being done and going back to painting, but it's exhausting at this point lol...

Make sure you youtube water effects tests! GW watereffects and Resin based watereffects act very differently. GW's is for all intents and purposes Acrylic gloss medium, so it won't set very well in anything but the thinnest layers!

Tom, I'll try and have a look... I don't really feel like watching tutorials usually (too depressing considering the awesome skills they display), but it might be worth it.

Good luck on the Hybrids, you should post some pics on your thread (I checked when I saw your previous post, in case I had missed an update lol)...

Your mangrove/swamp basing theme is really good. It makes me think of the old illustrations of the swamps surrounding Skavenblight, filled with wrecks and deadly things.

    Good work Yggs.

If you're planning to use artificial water on these ones, could you post step by step pics please? (I'm interested in making something similar for some Rackham models)Thanks.

Thanks!!! I'll try to remember taking pics, but if it's really as MajorTom said (that is, thin & thinner layers), I'm not sure I'll have the patience to do it at all!!

    UPDATES :

2nd Marine is almost finished, a few touch-ups, and he'll be ready to join TiB...

    Here he is :

    Body

    Flamer

    Assembled model

    Back

What do you think? Any things I could do better?

I'm still thinking of the fluff for him... I just know he's a veteran of the Dead Meadow Massacre (hence its left knee pad), but apart from this...

Love him Yggs... wow. Maybe some carbon blackening at the tip of the flamer... really that's about all I could suggest. Really, really nice figure.

    Thanks Git!

It doesn't show well on the "Flamer" pic, but on the "Assembled mini" one, you can see I blackened the tip... I just used multiple layers of heavily watered-down Chaos Black for it, maybe it's too subtle...

No, actually I was trying to depict a patch of high grass as a reminder of the "Dead Meadow" battle...

For verdigris I prefer to use Hawk Turquoise + Bleached Bone, usually...

Love the blue on the knee pads and gems, i wish mine came out like that.

Can't wait to see some paint on ninjas soon, i can feel the temptation for a skaven army increasing slowly which is extremely worrying.

Luckily i dont have to watch all the romantic comedys my wife watches, but some of them i do, "love and other drugs" definately trys to keep the guys attention, its well worth checking out (hint... boobs!).

    Post by: Yggdrasil

For the blue gems, the key is to slowly go from Necron Abyss to almost pure white...

I usually have 6-7 steps, 3 to go from Necron Abyss to pure Hawk Turquoise, 2 for Hawk Turquoise + Bleached Bone ( 1:1 and 1:2, usually); then 2 for Hawk Turquoise + Skull White (something close to 1:4, and 1:8)... Plus a dot of skull white on top.

Highly watered down paints, and it's important to "pull" the paint towards the lightest part (usually the bottom...)

As for the romantic comedies, I usually avoid them in cinemas, it's mostly at home I have to cope with them...

And for Skavens, they now have a bunch of nice sprues! I just wish they had re-released the Night Runner sprues with the modern anatomy, they're leaner and look more deadly than funny now!

@ btemple0 : Well, I don't have any, but I had bought some chalks a few months ago, I'm just afraid the spray will melt the paint away... I'll have to try on a mini, I guess...

@ TiB : I'm happy you like him! It's going to be hard to part with such a mini, I'm afraid... But, well, I'm sure your Warpcrafter will more than make up for the loss!

@ monkeytroll : Thanks... True, those BA kits have quite a bunch of details, it's hard to avoid going wild with a lot of fuzzy colours... So I try to keep mine limited!

I'm glad everyone seems to like it, it has made me delve into my SM Codex to try and find a small list I could run, without having to paint a lot of minis...

I'm thinking of Kantor + 2 Sternguards squads in Razorback + 2 Scout squads + 1 Land Speeder Storm + 1 Whirlwind, I haven't been through the maths, but it should bring me close to 1000pts... Yet another project, yet another diversion... When I am going to start my Nurgle Marines?!?

I'm feeling the pressure... I'll do my best to take the sharp edge of the grieving.

I do have 1 single request about the mini though. Could you perhaps make the =I= pad black with silver trim? That way he'll fit in with the rest of the ex-deathwatchers.

    Post by: Yggdrasil

Well, I can... I usually suck at metallic colours, but I'll comply!

(In addition, it'll erase the red scriptures on the pad, but hey...)

Does the skull on the =I= have to be silver as well?

The World Tree's offsprings - Current WIP: "da Snipa wooz'da best shut uvva dat side'uv town" @ 2011/01/09 23:47:55

    Post by: btemple0

IIRC you can use something like a cotton ball to apply powders, that or they make a kit that uses a spongy looking tool to apply the powders with.
I have seen the skull painted metallic and as a bone color, it is usually up to player preference, and I thought the script on the pad was supposed to be inlaid, as if the pad had the text engraved into the ceramite itself.

Yeah black pad and silver trim and skull and =I=.

Have you got any special wishes for the paintjob on your Warpcrafter btw?

@ btemple : I'll try your technique... As for the scriptures on the pad, the ones from the DW metal bits pack are engraved, but the one I used comes from the SM Commander kit, and is plain apart from the =I= and a small writing on top of the pad...

@ Tib : Ok, I'll do that... For the Warpcrafter, I just want it to look as rusty as that one! That'd be perfect!

Wow, he's looking very cool indeed. He puts my scorpions to shame
I have one suggestion for the end of the flamer though. I can see you've got the soot on there. Take a soft pencil and gently rub it over the edges of the flamer. This will give you a slight sheen as if metal is showing through the soot. I've tried it on my giard flamers and it looks quite nice

@ graven : No worries, dude... I'd be pleased if you posted a pic in here... It's not everyday you're a"muse" to someone!
The list I made in my mind was quite quick, I just picked up the models I like most in the current Codex, while trying to keep the model count low, and still within the FOC... If I'm courageous, I'll maybe add a Dread + Tactical squad in Drop Pods... But that may well be in 2 years' time!!

@ endtransmission : I have to redo the pad anyway, so if I still think of it, I'll try!

Wow, I'm not sure this deserves the "one of the coolest" award, but I'm glad you found some interesting things here...

The colour is actually a bit hard, and I don't remember it properly myself, for I spent a lot of time on it (mostly due to the drying time of washes!).
The base colour was a mix of GW Terracotta and Dwarf Flesh, IIRC... Highlighted with Elf Flesh in it, then washed with various colours, Red, Brown, Blue, Purple... Then the beak & face were re-highlighted with the same colours, up to almost pure Elf Flesh, I guess...

As for the Discs / Buttons, I'm still waiting for a GW order for a few aerial bases, I'll try with the rods on regular 25mm bases.

Anyway, thanks for the support, I'm a fan of your work, so it's really pleasant to hear such good words!

MajorTom11 wrote:Latest stuff is full of win all over the place btw.

P.s, what was your recipe for the purple on that bolter??

For that I know : Liche Purple basecoat in 2-3 thin layers on a white primer, "highlighted" with Warlock Purple - it doesn't really highlight it, rather changes the colour with a lighter tone - washed with Devlan, then highlighted again with Warlock, and eventually Warlock + Bleached Bone (2:1 or 3:2, something like this). If anything screws up, a glaze of either (or both) Liche or Warlock.

    On other topics:

    Marine Swap :

I sent Gitsplitta's Battle-Brother 3 weeks ago, but it seems he never arrived... I know it can be long for the US, especially at Xmas time & with the snow, but I can't help but fear the worse... Wait & see...

    Update rythm :

From tomorrow on, and for 2 weeks, I'll be away from home but will maybe have a limited access to the internet. I won't bring anything but a load of Skavens to trim in my spare time, so don't expect any major update until then...

And even after, I'll spend more than half of my time away from home, so my already sluggish modelling pace will go down to an almost halt...

Thanks for the support, guys, and good luck to you all!

That last marine of yours is beautiful Yggs, you have definitely stepped up alevel in your painting you put me to shame!

And sorry for the late reply but doming resin is a two part epoxy resin with a 1:4 ratio (IIRC), it is the one to use for suspending things and will allow you to "pour" your water instead of painting it in layers. you can always pour a thick layer of doming resin then paint or apply things like leaves and scum on the water then paint your water effects over it giving a layered effect which would suit mangroves.

I used doming resin poured into a silicone mold when I made these little suckers to hang below my tervigon

I also used it on the base, mixed with a few dashes of globlin green and dark angels green ( no too mixed I wanted it have swirls of green!)

Again the only downsize is the length of the curing time which was at least 48 hours to get a hard set, hope this helps

I was planning to add various proportions of Horror-like mutations among the squads, but seeing how much I strived to build that mini, I'm not sure I'll do more than 1 or 2 with so many Horror parts...

There are 3 problems with the Horrors :
    - their head & torso are one and the same, so it's either (SM Torso + SM Head) or Horror (Torso + Head). I don't think it's doable to have any intermediate degree of conversion;
    - their arms aren't really fit for wielding boltguns / pistols, so it's hard to have 2 Horror arms on a single mini;
    - their legs are small and in a jumping stance, which also make them unfit for a SM conversion...

I still have an idea about a SM torso + Horror head, but I don't expect much out of it...

    PDH wrote:

Actually, just before leaving, I managed to find a downloadable version of a game I had bought(but lost in the many in-between assignments / home changes), enjoyed, and had nostalgia about: Epic40k : Final Liberation . So in the first of my two weeks, it was all about that game, and in the second, I have been working from 6am to 12pm for 4 days, so I had little time for anything but sleep!!

So, I don't even have an update for the Skavens, I'm afraid... Maybe this weekend?!?

And second, I must know how you went about painting the armour (if you dont mind I would love to borrow this scheme for my own Tzeentch warband idea I have). I love the color selection. If you wouldn't mind telling us your recipe and how you went about painting it please.

Incredible marine conversion. I think that is the best model I have ever seen. No joke. The colors are perfectly complimentary, and the purple is a great contrast to the armor.

That latest marine is amazing, I don't even like a lot of the parts that make up the model but you made them work.

No worries, I'd be honoured if it inspires you to go that way!

I usually paint my minis as I go, so I don't have any detailed walkthrough, but I'll try to explain anyway...

First, important thing is WHITE undercoat. Should you miss this, the dark colours will be almost the same, but the light ones will be far less vibrant.

Second, I basecoat all the parts:
    - Armour = Charadon Granite,
    - Soft Armour / inner Boltgun = Adeptus Battlegrey,
    - Flesh = 1/1 Terracotta / Dwarf Flesh,
    - Flames / Gems / Icons = Necron Abyss,
    - Outer Boltgun / some details = Liche Purple,
    - Some other details = Camo Green,
    - Shoulder Pads / Parchment effects = Dheneb Stone.

Then, wash once, twice or thrice with Devlan Mud (Gryphonne Sepia for the parchments), depending on how heavy you are with them, and how dark you want them.

When everything is dry, I touch up all the parts :
    - Armour = Graveyard Earth,
    - Soft Armour / inner Boltgun = Codex Grey then Fortress Grey,
    - Flesh = Dwarf Flesh, highlighted more and more with Elf Flesh,
    - Flames / Gems / Icons = Hawk Turquoise, highlighted with Bleached Bone, and in the end with Skull White,
    - Outer Boltgun / some details = Warlock Purple, highlighted with Bleached Bone
    - Some other details = Scorpion Green,
    - Shoulder Pads / Parchment effects = a bit of Ogryn Flesh wash + a drop of Yellow Ink (from the old GW range). The writings are painted with a GW Detail Brush, with watered down (but not too much) Necron Abyss.

In the end, some small OSL details (boltgun lights, gems, eyes, etc...)

Thanks a lot. I don't think we can be right about any 'best model ever', but it's most appreciated. Thanks again.

Thanks wib!!! Those SG have a radical artistic line (to me at least), so I can understand your feelings...

    UPDATES :

    Nothing much today, I'm afraid.

I have painted TiB's DW Marine Shoulder Pad in Silver, as requested, but no pics, sorry (I'm not really happy with it, as I don't like how I paint metallic colours).

Other than this, I had very little inspiration today, so after one hour of aimless burrowing in my bitz boxes, qOrbin's awesome Daemon Prince came to my mind, and I set myself to creating my own version of a Nurgle Daemon Prince.

So here's the first stage of the concept :

Body, legs, and head are glued, rest is blu-tacked. I'm still at a loss about his right arm. I'm thinking of an old RT-era Conversion Beamer, but I'm not so sure (not really Nurgle-y).

Am I on the right track?
    Thanks again for the support,

    Yggdrasil.

I have no idea why I keep on suggesting Pus Cannons, maybe because I think that is one of the most hilarious ways to describe a unit getting wiped out in a manner only Nurgle would approve of.

But I would like to see your Skaven get some paint at some point as well, and I still want more Pus cannons from pretty much any Nurgle unit that can have one.

    @ LiveforFun666 : Thanks!! I just wish I could model / paint faster... I'm desperately sluggish...

@ lifeofshan : Thanks, but as mentioned before, credits go to qOrbin (see my previous post for link)! At first I had bought those River Trolls to be converted into mutant Ogryns for my Tranch renegades, but it may prove better that way...

@ btemple0 / PDH : Are you only thinking of the FW DP gun, or could it go to something close to the Plaguereaper's gun, or Blight Drone?
Either way, it's going to be hard, and surprisingly I don't want to spoil the mini with some messy GS...
Plus, his back is already filled up with a Havoc Launcher that will serve as a jump-pack, so I'm not sure there'll be enough room to
fit a pus tank on him...

@ BLACKHAND : Yeah, those River Trolls are really nice mini... I'm already thinking of a second one with a heavier water theme, maybe a scuba or deep-sea diver DP... Those vehicle searchlights could make for a nice deep-sea suit helmet!!

@ MajorTom11 : Thanks mate, your support is always welcome...

Other than this, it seems Brother Tanaerum survived its journey through the Warp, and eventually managed to reach the Mantis Warriors in their century-long crusade!
I'm really relieved to know he's safe, I would've been so sad to have him lost somewhere between France & the US... But there's nothing much to worry about now!

Git, I hope you'll take good care of him!

I'll consider any harebrained (is that word really used? just went for a translation of the French "farfelu", other solution was "scatterbrained" lol) idea you'd submit uh, as I haven't decided anything yet!!

On another side note, I was afraid the exhaust + AoBR klaw would scream "Orrrrrk" too much, but it seems it doesn't... Or are you just kind with me?

To be completely honest, I could care less about the power claw on a daemon, rather the fact that Commisar Yarrick has one, so why can't a daemon possess a similar weapon?

I don't think it needs a puss tank in the slightest...just a whopping big cannon (the new blood angel dread frag cannon for example) or a sentinel heavy flamer with cables and tubes running to his belly for ammunition.

Your DP concept is very good, I'm sure you're on the right way to make another great conversion.

The Ork Power Klaw is welcome, as well as the sensor head (you might wish to give a look at the defiler's sensor head -without the mask- I think it could quite well fit to your idea.)

I'd look closely for any progress here!

I love the new dp so far. You're definitely on the right track, I think.

(And I just may steal your binocular idea for a second wave of screamers. The challenge here is to avoid making the creature look too cute in a Wall-E kind of way.)

I do think the creature resembles some kind of ork a bit. Partly because the river troll model is so squat in an orky way. Perhaps making the other arm more organic, with talons or spiney, crustacious daemon claws, might balance it out.

On the other hand, with the right paint scheme, and nested within an army brimming with chaos, I'm sure the creature will look suitably daemonic.
